Abstract:Thermodynamic behavior investigations on nanomaterials are of great scientific interest and possess technological implications for advancing nanoscience and nanotechnology. However, nanoscale thermodynamic studies on ceramic semiconductors are faced with great challenges due to their thermostability, and there lacks a percipient understanding of their atomistic thermal behaviors. Here, the atomic‐scale mechanism of the melting and coalescence processes of binary semiconductors, including rutile TiO2(R) and SnSe nanostructures, via real‐time electron beam (e‐beam) irradiation is reported. Under the e‐beam, the inelastic electron‐matter interactions and the low thermal conductivity of the samples cause a local temperature increase. The in situ melting process is recorded via high‐resolution TEM imaging, which exclusively shows a specific planar melting order of the (001), (011), and (100) for TiO2(R). This measurement provides direct evidence that matches the surface energy differences predicted by existing theoretical calculations and experiments. A similar phenomenon is induced and observed on SnSe, which derives a particular melting order of (210), (211), and (002). Furthermore, the in situ melting and coalescence analysis of ultrafine TiO2(R) nanoparticles suggests surface atom transfer and recrystallization as observed. The demonstration of e‐beam directed shape formation and tailoring reveals the possibility for nano/microscale processing of ceramic nanostructures, which are otherwise considered chemically stable and mechanically robust.
Ion Mixing to Synthesize Amorphous and Metastable Crystalline Alloys in the Fe-Ta System

Abstract:Formations of metastable phase in the Fe-Ta system upon ion irradiation are sensitive to the entire composition of the initial multilayered films and ion irradiation dose. Amorphization was achieved at high irradiation dose in the Fe35Ta65 multilayered films, which was in the vicinity of the deep eutectic point. A metastable face centred cubic (fcc) phase was, however, observed at low irradiation dose in the same sample. Detailed examination showed that the fee phase had a composition of about Fe20Ta80.
Structural modification mechanism of Fe-based amorphous alloys by high-energy particle irradiation

Abstract:High-energy particle irradiation-induced crystallization technology presents remarkable potential for precise nanostructure design. However, the fundamental mechanism behind this process remains a long-standing unsolved puzzle. In this paper, we used a high-energy electron beam as the irradiation source and amorphous Fe85B15 alloy as a model system to investigate the behavior of irradiation-induced structural changes. Our experimental results show that the nucleation barrier in irradiation-induced crystallization ranges from 0.5 to 0.8 eV, depending on the temperature, much smaller than that observed in thermal-induced crystallization. Additionally, the nucleation entropy observed is −1.60 × 10−3 eV/K, and the entropic contribution to the nucleation barrier dominates over the enthalpic contribution. This paper provides compelling experimental evidence demonstrating that nucleation in irradiation-induced crystallization is not a thermally activated effect; instead, it is a process in which the amorphous state progresses through a series of intermediate short-range ordering configurations toward a crystalline state with the assistance of irradiation-induced atomic rearrangement.

Abstract:Despite great progress in the non-classical homogeneous nucleation and crystallization theory, the heterogeneous processes of atomic nucleation and crystallization remain poorly understood. Abundant theories and experiments have demonstrated the detailed dynamics of homogeneous nucleation; however, intensive dynamic investigations on heterogeneous nucleation are still rare. In this work, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at the atomic scale was carried out with temporal resolution for heterogeneous nucleation and crystallization. The results show a reversible amorphous to crystal phase transformation that is manipulated by the size threshold effect. Moreover, the two growth pathways of Bi particles can be mainly assigned to the atomic adsorption expansion in the amorphous state and effective fusion in the crystal contact process. These interesting findings, based on a real dynamic imaging system, strongly enrich and improve our understanding of the dynamic mechanisms in the non-classical heterogeneous nucleation and crystallization theory, providing insights into designing innovative materials with controlled microstructures and desired physicochemical properties.

Abstract:Understanding classical and nonclassical mechanisms of crystal nucleation and growth at the atomic scale is of great interest to scientists in many disciplines. However, fulfilling direct atomic-scale observation still poses a significant challenge. Here, by taking a thin amorphous bismuth (Bi) metal nanosheet as a model system, direct atomic resolution of the crystal nucleation and growth initiated from an amorphous state of Bi metal under electron beam inside an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope is provided. It is shown that the crystal nucleation and growth in the phase transformation of Bi metal from amorphous to crystalline structure takes place via the particle-mediated nonclassical mechanism instead of the classical atom-mediated mechanism. The dimension of the smaller particles in two contacted nanoparticles and their mutual orientation relationship are critical to governing several coalescence pathways: total rearrangement pathway, grain boundary migration-dominated pathway, and surface migration-dominated pathway. Sequential strain analyses imply that migration of the grain boundary is driven by the strain difference in two Bi nanocrystals and the coalescence of nanocrystals is a defect reduction process. The findings may provide useful information to clarify the nanocrystal growth mechanisms of other materials on the atomic scale.
In-situ TEM observation of preferential amorphization in single crystal Si nanowire

Abstract:The nanoinstability of single crystal Si nanowire under focused electron beam irradiation was in-situ investigated at room temperature by transmission electron microscopy technique. It was observed that the Si nanowire amorphized preferentially from the surface towards the center with the increasing of electron dose. In contrast, in the center of the Si nanowire the amorphization seemed non-uniform and much more difficult accompanying with rotation of crystal grains and compression of d-spacing. Such a selectively preferential amorphization as athermally induced by the electron beam irradiation can be well accounted for by our proposed concepts of nanocurvature effect and energetic beam-induced athermal activation effect, while the classical knock-on mechanism and the electron beam heating effect seem inadequate to explain these processes. Furthermore, the findings revealed the difference of amorphization between Si nanowire and Si film under focused electron beam irradiation. Also, the findings have important implications for nanostability and nanoprocessing of future Si nanowire-based devices.

Abstract:The effects of annealing temperature on the structures, ferroelectric and magnetic properties of Aurivillius layer-structured Bi5Ti3FeO15 (BTF) films were investigated. It was found that an annealing temperature above 625°C can lead to the appearance of Bi4Ti3O12 (BiT) secondary phase on Pt substrates. The reduction of the grain sizes was simultaneously confirmed by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy with the introduction of the BiT phase. Moreover, the remanent polarization and coercive field of the BTF films were dramatically enhanced with the introduction of the BiT phase. Improved ferromagnetism for the BTF films was demonstrated upon increasing annealing temperature. Our data indicated that the ferroelectricity strongly correlated with the growth orientation of the BTF films. Finally, the possible factors for the obvious increase of the remanent polarization and coercive field, and the possible reasons for the enhanced ferromagnetic properties were discussed with increasing annealing temperature.

Abstract:Crystallization is a key for ferroelectricity which is a collective behavior of microscopic electric dipoles. On the other hand, uncontrolled crystallization leads to uneven morphology and random crystal orientations, which undermines the application potential of ferroelectric thin films. In this work, we introduce a film fabrication method of low-temperature physical vapor deposition followed by restrained crystallization, with electrical properties monitored in real-time by in situ measurements. This method was adopted to fabricate films of 2-methylbenzimidazole (MBI), whose molecule crystals are proton-transfer type biaxial ferroelectrics and tend to grow into a hedgehog-shaped spherulites morphology. The in situ measurements confirm that the crystallization, corresponding to a clear transition of physical properties, occurs dominantly during post-deposition warming. This enables the fabrication of micron-thick films in disk-shaped morphology with one polarization axis aligned along the out-of-plane direction, while the measured spontaneous polarization and coercive field are comparable to the single-crystal values. These results mark an important advancement of film growth that is expected to benefit widely the fabrication of molecular materials films whose functional properties hinge on crystallization to achieve desirable morphology and crystallinity.

Abstract:The microscopic strain evolution and microstructural of FeCuNbSiB amorphous alloy samples were studied under both free and tensile stress annealing conditions using in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). An amorphous-nanocrystalline structure was developed in both samples after annealing at 813 K, as the microstrains increased and decreased along the parallel and perpendicular stress directions respectively. The applied stress during annealing imposed limitations on the size of nanocrystals along the tensile and perpendicular stress directions, resulting in smaller sizes compared to those obtained under free annealing conditions, due to the reduction in Gibbs free energy by the applied stress and the subsequent enhancement of nucleation rates. The nanocrystalline size perpendicular to the stress direction was slightly larger than that along the parallel stress direction because the suppression of atomic diffusion perpendicular to the stress direction during crystallization could be favorable for local atomic rearrangement.

Abstract:Upon ion beam irradiation, some new phenomena were observed in thin solid films during crystal-amorphous or amorphous-crystal transition. Quasicrystalline AlFe phase was formed in an amorphous matrix by ion beam mixing of AlFe multilayers without post-annealing. In the NiMo systems, dendritic growth was detected when alloy films were transformed from crystalline to amorphous, while fractal patterns and percolation network structures of single crystal precipitates were observed, for the first time, at critical conditions of amorphous structural phase transitions. The dimensions of the ion-induced patterns was determined by image processing computer to be 1.72 ± 0.07 and 1.63 ± 0.06, respectively. The pattern growth was also studied in some other metal systems and various patterns were observed. In this paper, experimental observations are presented and the implications of these results are also discussed.

Abstract:Despite Laves phase precipitate in advanced accident-tolerant FeCrAl alloys has been reported to have remarkable properties, its irradiation resistance and phase stability are unexplored largely. Here, we investigate the response of Laves phase precipitate in Fe-13.5Cr-4.7Al alloys through in-situ TEM observation during 400 keV Fe+ irradiation with different cumulative dose at a wide temperature range from room temperature to 823 K. The detailed relationship between critical dose and temperature for the crystalline-to-amorphous transformation was established. In the low temperature region (≤748 K), the critical dose was almost independent of temperature, while at higher temperatures, the increase of temperature could significantly delay the amorphization process. Even when irradiated to 11.76 dpa at 823 K, no obvious dissolution of Laves phase precipitate was observed. It was observed for the first time that the Al in Laves phase precipitate and FeCrAl matrix would diffuse to phase boundary, resulting in the segregation of Al at phase boundary.

Abstract:Six sets of the Fe-Ti-Nb multilayered films were first prepared and then subjected to ion beam irradiation with 180 keV Xe ions. The unique amorphous phases, phase separation induced dual amorphous phase and orientation-preferred BCC-Fe crystalline phase were observed in these Fe-Ti-Nb multilayered films at different irradiation doses. In addition, it is also revealed that the Ti-rich HCP crystalline phase could transform into a metastable FCC phase in the Fe15Ti75Nb10 film. The possible mechanisms of these non-equilibrium phase formation and structural transformations are discussed based on atomic collision theory, geometric crystallography and ab initio calculations.

Abstract:Nanostructures with rich physical properties are promising for applications in electronics, chemistry, energy and bioscience, etc. The relationship and manipulation among different nanostructures as a hot topic attract many attentions. However, the transformation, such as nucleation events and metastable states, is rarely observed. The electron beam‐induced perturbations of the system can be used to manipulate nanostructures by controlling the properties of the focused electron beam. Here, taking advantage of an electron beam to induce the direct growth of bismuth (Bi) nanodroplets on the Bi nanowire, the transformation between nucleation and decomposition processes within the nanoparticles is studied by high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results show that the nucleation occurred at the edge of the Bi nanodroplet, and the metastable state in coalesced area introduced the additional interfacial states, determining the nucleation and decomposition of the nanostructure. This study helps to observe the critical process, reduce the gap between theory and experiment for reducing interfacial area to improve the energy storage efficiency. The reversible phase transition of bismuth on Bi nanowire is manipulated by e‐beam irradiation in a transmission electron microscope. Taking advantage of an electron beam to induce the direct growth of Bi nanodroplets on the Bi nanowire, the transformation between solidification and liquidation processes within the nanoparticles is studied by high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results show that the metastable state in coalesced area introduced additional interfacial states, determining the solidification and liquidation of the nanostructure.
Unraveling irradiation induced grain growth with in situ transmission electron microscopy and coordinated modeling

Abstract:Nanostructuring has been proposed as a method to enhance radiation tolerance, but many metallic systems are rejected due to significant concerns regarding long term grain boundary and interface stability. This work utilized recent advancements in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to quantitatively characterize the grain size, texture, and individual grain boundary character in a nanocrystalline gold model system before and after in situ TEM ion irradiation with 10 MeV Si. The initial experimental measurements were fed into a mesoscale phase field model, which incorporates the role of irradiation-induced thermal events on boundary properties, to directly compare the observed and simulated grain growth with varied parameters. The observed microstructure evolution deviated subtly from previously reported normal grain growth in which some boundaries remained essentially static. In broader terms, the combined experimental and modeling techniques presented herein provide future avenues to enhance quantification and prediction of the thermal, mechanical, or radiation stability of grain boundaries in nanostructured crystalline systems.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of bismuth ferrite multiferroic nanostructures, which were synthesized via microwave-hydrothermal method with a bismuth nitrate/iron nitrate mixture under alkaline conditions. Both BiFeO3 (BFO) nanocrystallites with spherical and rectangle-like morphologies and Bi2Fe4O9 nanowires were synthesized by microwave-hydrothermal process, and their nanoscale structural motifs were revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that BFO nanocrystallites with rectangle-like morphology had an average width of 140 nm and length of 205 nm, and the long side grew along the [100] direction, whereas the BFO nanoparticles with spherical morphology had a particle size in the range of 15-55 nm, and nearly monodispersive behavior was observed in these nanoparticles. The synthesized Bi2Fe4O9 nanowires growing along the [001] direction had a diameter of 40 nm and length up to about 0.5 mu m.

Abstract:A brief summary is firstly presented concerning up-to-date experimental studies of the formation of amorphous alloys (metallic glasses) in binary metal systems by ion beam mixing of nanosized metal–metal multilayers. Secondly, under the framework of Miedema's theory, thermodynamic modeling of crystal-to-amorphous transition is described with special consideration of the effect of the excess interfacial free energy on the alloy phase formation. Thirdly, in some representative systems, glass-forming ranges are calculated directly from their realistic interatomic potentials by determining the critical solid solubilities of the systems by molecular dynamics simulations. Finally, a comparison between irradiation and thermally induced amorphization in the metal–metal multilayers is also discussed.
Comparative Study of Irradiation-induced and Thermally Induced Structural Phase Transitions in Equilibrium Immiscible Fe–Ag Systems

Abstract:In the equilibrium immiscible Fe-Ag systems, unique fcc-structured solid solutions were obtained in their nanosized multilayered films upon ion beam manipulation, indicating that the solid solubility of Fe in Ag can be extended from nearly zero up to 60 at. %. In contrast, an unusual hexagonal (4H) Ag phase was observed in the Fe-Ag multilayered films upon steady-state thermal annealing. We report, in this paper, the detailed structural phase transitions observed in the Fe-Ag multilayered films upon ion irradiation and thermal annealing, together with a brief discussion concerning the significantly different mechanisms involved in the two processes.
Thermal Field Simulation and Optimization of PbF2 Single Crystal Growth by the Bridgman Method

Abstract:PbF2 single crystals are usually grown in the temperature gradient region by the Bridgman–Stockbarger method. Temperature distribution during the growth process is particularly important for the preparation of high-quality crystals. In this study, the temperature field during the growth of the PbF2 single crystals was simulated based on the finite element method. The temperature distribution and temperature gradient changes in the crucible were investigated at different growth stages, including the seeding, shouldering, and iso-diameters stages. The calculated results show that as the crucible position continues downward during the growth process, the axial temperature gradient increases and then decreases from the bottom to the top of the crucible, with almost flat isotherms near the solid–liquid interface where the axial temperature gradient is larger. At the shoulder below the crucible, the solid–liquid interface was improved by adjusting the tilt angle. Furthermore, based on a novel design of the heat-insulating baffle, the concave solid–liquid interface in the iso-diameter stage can be effectively adjusted to realize a lower radial temperature gradient. This study provides theoretical guidance for the optimization of the growth of high-quality PbF2 crystals by the Bridgman method.

Abstract:Amorphization of the (Fe, Co, Ni, Al, Si)-Yb multilayered alloy films under Xe+ and Ar+ irradiation at room temperature is studied. It is found that (Co, Ni, Al, Si)-Yb alloy films are amorphized or partially amorphized by ion beam mixing, while Fe-Yb alloy films are not amorphized at two selected compositions. The recrystallization temperatures of the (Co, Ni, Al, Si)-Yb amorphous alloys are also determined.
