Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) with tunable photoluminescence (PL) and a quantum yield of up to 35% in water were hydrothermally synthesized in one pot and separated via silica column chromatography. These separated CDs emitted bright and stable luminescence in gradient colors from blue to red under a single-wavelength UV light. They exhibited high optical uniformity; that is, every sample showed only one peak in the PL excitation spectrum, only one peak in the excitation-independent PL emission spectrum, and similar monoexponential fluorescence lifetimes. Although these samples had similar distributions of particle size and graphite structure in their carbon cores, the surface state gradually varied among the samples, especially the degree of oxidation. Therefore, the observed red shift in their emission peaks from 440 to 625 nm was ascribed to a gradual reduction in their band gaps with the increasing incorporation of oxygen species into their surface structures. These energy bands were found to depend on the surface groups and structures but not on the particle size, not as in traditional semiconductor quantum dots. In addition, because of their excellent PL properties and low cytotoxicity, these CDs could be used to image cells in different colors under a single-wavelength light source, and the red-emitting CDs could be used to image live mice because of the strong penetration capability of their fluorescence.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are attracting much interest due to their excellent photoelectric properties and wide range of potential applications. However, it is still a challenge to regulate their bandgap emissions to achieve full-color CDs with high emissions. Herein, we propose an approach for producing full-color emissive CDs by employing a solvent engineering strategy. By only tuning the volume ratio of water and dimethylformamide (H2O/DMF), the photoluminescence (PL) emission wavelengths of the CDs can be changed from 451 to 654 nm. Different fluorescence features of multicolor CDs were systematically investigated. XRD, SEM, TEM, Abs/PL/PLE, XPS, and PL decay lifetime characterizations provided conclusive evidence supporting the extent to which the solvent controlled the dehydration and carbonization processes of the precursors, leading to a variation in their emission color from red to blue. The as-prepared CDs exhibited excellent and stable fluorescence performance even after being heated at 80 °C for 48 h and with UV light continuously irradiated for 15 h. Based on their excellent fluorescent properties and photothermal stability, bright multicolor light-emitting diodes with a high CRI of up to 91 were obtained. We anticipate that these full-color emissive CDs are beneficial for applications in lighting, display, and other fields.

One-pot synthesis of full-color carbon dots with N, O surface-state energy-gap-controlled emission

Abstract:An easy and effective route for preparing full-color (blue, green, yellow and red) carbon dots (CDs) with brilliant and stable photoluminescent (PL) was developed by using gallic acid and o-Phenylenediamine as precursors. The resulting CDs were then separated by silica-gel column chromatography. The prepared four types of CDs owned high quantum yields (up to 11.2%) and exhibited attractive features such as excellent solubility, high stability, excitation wavelength-independent PL, mono-exponential PL lifetimes, low cell toxicity and homogeneous optical properties. Then, the mechanism of full-color CDs PL was explored. The results suggested that the surface-states of prepared CDs, especially the pyridine N (C = N) and C = O functional groups, were primarily responsible for the full-color PL emission. The blue CDs had the largest content of C = O while the CDs turned to be green as the C = O decreased and the C = N content increased. The surface state regulation of C = N bond was dominant in yellow CDs while red CDs possessed highest content of C = N and new -COOH appeared. The gradual substitution of C = N to C = O made the band gap of CDs narrowed, which is the main reason for the redshift of CDs PL emission peak. Importantly, the easy preparation and unique optical features of these CDs made them potentially useful in numerous applications such as full-color cell labeling, drug delivery and optoelectronic technologies.

Abstract:The paper describes a kind of truly full-color photoluminescence (PL) CDs. The CDs were prepared by using one-pot hydrothermally heating citric acid and formamide at 200 °C for 2 h. The CDs have three fluorescent centers at blue, green, and red light region. Their color was regulated through two means, including changing excitation wavelengths or CDs concentrations. The emission maxima changed from blue to red with the increase of excitation wavelengths or CDs concentrations. The full-color PL behavior of the CDs was inherited and conserved in the solid polymer matrix, giving multicolor CDs/polymer films and light emitting diodes (LEDs). White-light LED (WLED) with the CIE coordinate approaching to (0.31, 0.32) were also achieved.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have tremendous potential applications in bioimaging, biomedicine, and optoelectronics. By far, it is still difficult to produce photoluminescence (PL) tunable CDs with high quantum yield (QY) across the entire visible spectrum and narrow the emission peak widths of CDs close to those of typical quantum dots. In this work, a series of CDs with tunable emission from 443 to 745 nm, quantum yield within 13-54%, and narrowed full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 108 to 55 nm, are obtained by only adjusting the reaction solvents in a one-pot solvothermal route. The distinct optical features of these CDs are based on their differences in the particle size, and the content of graphitic nitrogen and oxygen-containing functional groups, which can be modulated by controlling the dehydration and carbonization processes during solvothermal reactions. Blue, green, yellow, red, and even pure white light emitting films (Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE)= 0.33, 0.33, QY = 39%) are prepared by dispersing one or three kinds of CDs into polyvinyl alcohol with appropriate ratios. The near-infrared emissive CDs are excellent fluorescent probes for both in vitro and in vivo bioimaging because of their high QY in water, long-term stability, and low cytotoxicity.

Abstract:Herein, we summarize recent research developments and progress of carbon dots (CDs), which have been attracting considerable attention as a new type of photoluminescent material. Raw materials, from single carbonaceous compounds to colorful natural substances, for the synthesis of CDs are discussed. A range of diverse synthetic methodologies to achieve better photoluminescence performance and more advanced functions are summarized, and these are basically divided into two classes: top-down and bottom-up. The inspiring properties, mainly including composites, optical properties and cytotoxicity, are listed. In particular, the luminescence mechanism and surface functionalization of the CDs are briefly discussed. Moreover, on the basis of the above, the long-wavelength and multicolor emission properties of CDs and ways to achieve these goals including surface state and size controlled by synthesis strategies, proper precursors, chemical doping and modification, solvatochromic effects and energy transfer are reviewed in detail.

Abstract:We present a facile approach, without the need for external heating and any additional energy input, to produce fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) inexpensively and on a large scale. Fluorescence emission wavelengths from the obtained CDs shift gradually from 630 to 400 nm with reduction in their concentration in solution. This work offers a novel avenue for tuning band gaps in CDs and endowing them with potential for various applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have excellent optical properties, low toxicity and easy preparation, which have led to them being widely used in biomedicine, sensing and optical devices. However, although great progress has been made in the preparation of CDs, the detailed exploration of their photoluminescence (PL) mechanism is still under debate due to their complex structures and surface functionalities. Here, we proposed a single change in the pH of the synthesis condition, which had no effect on the CDs intrinsic core states and avoided the mutual influence of multiple PL origins. The m-phenylenediamine (m−PD) served as a carbon source, whose protonation degree determined the surface state of the resulting CDs and the accompanying fluorescence characteristics. The as-obtained CDs materials can be applied in the chemical sensor and anti-counterfeiting fields in a targeted manner. Therefore, our work not only contributes to the explanation of the CDs PL mechanism, but also obtains a series of CDs materials with controllable PL properties.

Abstract:Carbon dots have shown a broad application prospect in the fields of sensing and detection, biological imaging, and optoelectronic devices. However, it is still challenging to adopt a simple and green synthesis route and to develop new precursor systems to prepare full-color luminescent carbon dots. This study proposes a mechanism for fine regulation of carbon dot fluorescence spectra based on surface states of CN, COC, and OH, among which CN play a major role in long wavelength emission while COC and OH are responsible for the blue shift of emission wavelength. Using 4,4-bipyridine and p-phenylenediamine as precursors in safe and environmentally friendly glycol and water as solvents for the first time, the fine spectral carbon dots with full spectrum luminescence from purple (441 nm) to red (627 nm) were successfully synthesized by simply changing the composition of the reaction solvent and using a short reaction time. Compared with other reports on regulating polychromatic carbon dots, our method is more refined and has a wider distribution of luminescent colors. In addition, the obtained carbon dots based on such surface state luminescence mechanism have shown good application prospects in specific detection of Fe3+and cell labeling.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a new type of fluorescent material because of their unique optical advantages, such as high photoluminescence quantum yields (QYs), excellent photo-stability, excitation-dependent emissions, and low toxicity. However, the photoluminescence mechanism for CDs remains unclear, which limits their further practical application. Here, CDs were synthesized via a solvothermal route from citric acid and urea. Through the oxidation and reduction treatment of pristine CDs, the origin of the photoluminescence and the involved mechanism were revealed. We found that the blue/green/red emissions originated from three diverse emitting states, i.e. the intrinsic state, and C=O- and C=N-related surface states, respectively. Based on the as-prepared CDs, a pH sensor depending on the radiometric luminescence detection was developed. Furthermore, we constructed CD/PVP (PVP, polyvinylpyrrolidone) composite films, which exhibited white light emission with photoluminescence QYs of 15.3%. The white light emission with different correlated color temperatures (CCTs), from 4807 K to 3319 K, was obtained by simply changing the amount of PVP solution. Benefiting from the white light-emitting solid-state films, single-component white light-emitting diodes were fabricated with an average color rendering index value (Ra) of 80.0, luminous efficiency of 10.2 lm W-1, and good working stability, thus indicating a promising potential for practical lighting applications.

Abstract:Full-color emissive carbon dots (CDs) hold a great promise for various applications, especially in light emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the existing synthetic routes for CDs are carried out in solutions, which suffer from low yields, high pressures, various byproducts, large amounts of waste solvents, and complicated photoluminescence (PL) origins. Therefore, it is necessary to explore large scale synthesis of CDs with high quantum yield (QY) across the entire visible range from a single carbon source by a solvent-free method. In this work, a series of CDs with tunable PL emission from 442 to 621 nm, QY of 23%–56%, and production yield within 34%–72%, are obtained by heating o-phenylenediamine with the catalysis of KCl. Detailed characterizations identify that, the differences between these CDs with respect to the graphitization degree, graphitic nitrogen content, and oxygen-containing functional groups, are responsible for their distinct optical properties, which can be modulated by controlling the deamination and dehydrogenation processes during reactions. Blue, green, yellow, red emissive films, and LEDs are prepared by dispersing the corresponding CDs into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). All types of white LEDs (WLEDs) with high colorrendering- index (CRI), including warm WLEDs, standard WLEDs, and cool WLEDs, are also fabricated by mixing the red, green, and blue emissive CDs into PVA matrix by the appropriate ratios.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), novel luminescent zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, have been widely applied due to their low toxicity, optimal optical properties, and easy modification. However, the current controllable equipment and mechanism explanation of CDs are relatively vague and require urgent resolution. Full-color emission CDs, an essential CDs category, have attracted people's attention given their light and color-tunable properties. In addition to a wider range of biological and optoelectronic device applications, full-color emission CDs have similar structures and significantly affected the fluorescence mechanism of CDs. At present, few studies have reported on the research of CDs emitted by its full color, which greatly limits the development of CDs mechanisms and applications. As such, the present review detailed the full-color CDs development status, to which a suitable method for preparing full-color CDs was presented and the existing fluorescence emission mechanism of full-color CDs was summarized. Herein, we comprehensively introduced full-color CDs applications in biology and optoelectronics. Finally, we made an outlook on the development and potential applications of full-color CDs. The present review aims to contribute novel insights and methods for understanding full-color CDs.

Abstract:We propose a facile and simple synthesis of photoluminescent (PL) carbon dot self-assembled monolayer films (CD-SAMFs) at oil-water interfaces. By using styrene both as the carbon source and the oil phase medium, we got our amazing CD-SAMFs under the copper acetate and hydrogen peroxide (Cu(Ac)2-H2O2) catalytic-oxidation system. Without any surface modification, the spontaneously formed CD-SAMFs exhibit ultrathin thickness (<10 nm), bright luminescence, high transparency, and hydrophobicity, which have the potential as a new alternative to be used on multifunctional coating films, anticounterfeiting, displays, sensors, and optical devices.

Abstract:Multicolor carbon dots (CDs) with high stability are desired for various light emitting devices and bio-images. In this paper, the green and red emitting CDs were created by o -phenylenediamine and terephthalic acid (TA) as precursors at different temperatures via a solvothermal reaction. An efficient response surface methodology is developed to analyze the formation mechanism. Using optimized conditions, the green and red emitting CDs reveal photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 34.0 and 26.8%, respectively. The result of response surface method indicates that temperature, precursor concentration, and TA amount significantly influence the PLQYs of the CDs. The formation mechanism of the CDs was proposed by analyzing solvatochromism phenomena, oxidation processes, and fluorescence lifetimes. Initially, green CDs with surface state luminescence were formed followed by the subsequent generation of red CDs exhibiting molecular and carbon core state emission during oxidation. These CDs reveal high stability, in which the PL intensity almost remained unchanged after 7 months. Furthermore, three-color CDs/polymer films (λ em = 500, 536, and 568 nm) were successfully fabricated by using these two types of CDs. Sample 180-CDs/polystyrene film had photochromic properties, while other films had good photostability.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) offer tremendous advantages in the fields such as bioimaging, sensing, biomedicine, catalysis, information encryption, and optoelectronics. However, the inherent challenge is synthesizing CDs with a full-spectrum emission, as most CDs typically produce only blue or green emissions, which severely hinder further investigation into their fluorescence mechanism and restrict their broader applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this work, we reported a solvent-controlled strategy for the preparation of multicolor CDs with blue, yellow, and red emissions, using o-phenylenediamine (oPD) and ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BmimPF6) as precursors. The detailed characterizations proved that a solvent with a lower boiling point and lower solubility of precursors resulted in a higher degree of dehydration and carbonization process, thereby increasing carbon cores with sp2-conjugated domains and nitrogen doping and further reducing the bandgap energies, causing a significant redshift emission from blue to red. The underlying fluorescence mechanism of the prepared multicolor CDs was contributed to the surface state. Eventually, blue-, yellow-, and red-emitting CDs based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films and colorful LEDs devices were fabricated by dispersing the as-synthesized CDs into a PVA solution. The proposed solvent-controlled strategy for multicolor CDs preparation will be helpful for fully utilizing the advantages of CDs and expanding their applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), one of the most significant classes of carbon-based nanophosphors, have attracted extensive attention in recent years. However, few attempts have been reported for realizing CDs with tunable emissions, especially for obtaining the red-light emissions with high photoluminescence quantum yields. Herein, we synthesized CDs with different chromatic blue, green and red emissions by facilely changing the reaction solvent during hydrothermal conditions. The photoluminescence quantum yields of 34%, 19% and 47% for the blue, green and red emissions, respectively, were achieved. Furthermore, the solid-state CD/PVA composite films were constructed through mixing the CDs with PVA polymer, in which the self-quenching of photoluminescence of CDs had been successfully avoided benefiting from the formation of hydrogen bonds between the CDs and PVA molecules. Finally, the warm white light emitting diode (WLED) was fabricated by integrating CD/PVA film on a UV-LED chip. The WLED exhibited the Commission International de l'Eclairage coordinates (CIE) of (0.38, 0.34), correlated color temperature of 3913 K and color rendering index of 91, respectively, which were comparable with the commercial WLEDs.

Abstract:The use of carbon dots (CDs) to construct binary donor–acceptor exciplex systems has been shown to be an effective method for obtaining organic long persistent luminescence (OLPL). However, such a system currently necessitates the prior synthesis of CDs before integration with the organic matrix, thus complicating the reproducibility and large-scale production of the materials. Furthermore, attaining color-tunable long persistent luminescence (LPL) is also a major challenge for the system. Here, we report a one-step synthesis strategy for color-tunable CDs-based OLPL material (named CDs@CA). CDs donors and CA acceptors in the material can be generated in a single step during the reaction. Under ambient conditions and even in aqueous media, the LPL color of CDs@CA can be changed by the excitation wavelength, enabling color tuning from blue to green emission. This is the first time for the color tuning to be achieved in CDs-based OLPL materials. Meanwhile, the strategy is applicable to a wide range of alternative carbon sources, which makes it possible to rapidly prepare a wide range of CDs-based OLPL materials with varying LPL performance by selecting different carbon sources. This work is greatly beneficial to the development and application of CDs-based OLPL systems.

Abstract:Carbon dots with different emission fluorescence have a great number of potential applications for various areas from in vitro imaging and biotherapy, due to the good biosafety of red fluorescent CDs, to efficient ion detection and photocatalysis, due to the excellent photoluminescence properties of blue fluorescent carbon dots. Traditional methods for the synthesis of full-spectrum carbon dots require 24 h of synthesis and complex column chromatography. In this paper, a facile and efficient microfluidic method to continuously synthesize small and uniform carbon dots with full-spectrum emission fluorescence is developed for the first time. The synthesis process could be reduced to 20 minutes. Through XPS analysis and DFT calculations, it is quantitatively revealed that the number of primary amino groups determines the energy gap of the carbon dots and thus determines the fluorescence emission wavelength of the carbon dots. Applications for precise Fe3+ detection and in vitro bio-imaging were successfully implemented, showing great potential application value of the carbon dots.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have been extensively studied owing to their fascinating optical properties and wide potential applications. Here, we report an easy-to-perform and organic-solvent-free synthesis strategy for green-emissive CDs (G-CDs) possessing high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY). The G-CDs are synthesized by heating the homogeneous precursors of citric acid and cyanamide in an open vessel, circumventing the use of organic solvents, complex operations, high-pressure reactors, and expensive instruments in the synthesis process. The effect of various reaction variables on the formation and the optical properties of G-CDs are systematically investigated. The resultant G-CDs show bright PL emission at 521 nm with PL QY up to 73%. Then a white light-emitting diode (LED) with Commission Internationable de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.34) and color rendering index (CRI) of 92 is constructed based on G-CDs/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite. Moreover, a visual microfluidic detection platform is designed by using G-CDs as fluorescent probes for rapid quantitative detection of Fe3+, Cu2+, and Mn2+ metal ions, which can realize synchronized testing of multiple samples. This study might promote the development and preparation methods of high-performance CDs with various optical applications.
