Abstract:Abstract Green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has become incredibly popular, mainly by minimizing problems of environmental contamination and by being able to reduce, stabilize and potentially functionalize nanomaterials. Such compounds have possible applications in various areas, e.g ., pharmaceuticals (drug delivery systems, cosmetics), textile industry (clothing with antimicrobial properties), diagnostic medicine (imaging, high efficiency biosensors), energy (solar panels), bioremediation, among others. However, the lack of reproducibility and information on the control mechanisms during synthesis have made the application of green-synthesized nanoparticles unfeasible. Thus, this study proposed the investigation of the main mechanisms affecting synthesis control, using factorial design for the preparation of gold nanoparticles with extract of Coffea arabica . We obtained stable (Zeta Potential, UV-vis and DLS), monodisperse, and quasi-spherical (TEM) nanoparticles, which presented adsorbed aromatic molecules (FTIR and RAMAN) and defined crystal structure (XRD), proving that the plant extract acted as a reducing agent, as well as a stabilizer and functionalizer for the synthesized nanostructures. The factorial design employed here to obtain gold nanoparticles with Coffea arabica extract allowed for a controlled and reproducible synthesis, enabling new possibilities for the application in several fields.

Abstract:L-Cys-beta-CD@AuNPs nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple method of the reduction of HAuCl4 with NaBH4 and L-Cys-CD. The catalytic activity of L-Cys-beta-CD@AuNPs nanoparticles for the catalytic reductions of 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitro-1-naphthol was researched in detail. Because of the selective binding of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) to different guest molecules, L-Cys-beta-CD@AuNPs exhibits diverse catalytic activities for different substrates. The experimental results prove that L-Cys-beta-CD@AuNPs shows better catalytic efficiency for the reduction of 4-nitro-1-naphthol than p-nitrophenol.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared using an eco-friendly approach in a single step by reduction of HAuCl₄ with polyphenols from tea extracts, which act as both reducing and capping agents. The obtained AuNPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet⁻visible spectroscopy (UV⁻vis), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). They act as highly efficient catalysts in the reduction of various aromatic nitro compounds in aqueous solution. The effects of a variety of factors (e.g., reaction time, type and amount of reducing agent, shape, size, or amount of AuNPs) were studied towards the optimization of the processes. The total polyphenol content (TPC) was determined before and after the catalytic reaction and the results are discussed in terms of the tea extract percentage, the size of the AuNPs, and their catalytic activity. The reusability of the AuNP catalyst in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol was also tested. The reactions follow pseudo first-order kinetics.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a size-controlled synthesis of CuNi octahedral nanocrystals (NCs) using a hot colloidal solution approach. Two different sizes of CuNi nano-octahedra are chosen and investigated. It is determined that the reagent concentration remarkably plays a key role in the formation of the size-defined CuNi octahedral NCs. In terms of the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), it uncovers that the obtained CuNi octahedral NCs (in both sizes) exhibit higher catalytic activity than those of CuNi spherical NCs reported previously. It further indicates that the catalytic performance is strongly size-dependent due to their devise specific surface areas of the exposed crystallographic planes.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were prepared by reducing HAuCl4 with NaBH4. Their average particle sizes could be tuned in the range of 1.7 and 8.2 nm, by adjusting the amount of NaBH4 used during synthesis. The obtained Au NPs (colloids) were then loaded onto a commercial Al2O3 support to prepare Au/Al2O3 catalysts with tunable Au particle sizes. An optimal pH value (5.9) of the Au colloid solution was found to be essential for loading Au NPs onto Al2O3 while avoiding the growth of Au NPs. Au NPs and Au/Al2O3 catalysts were tested in the reduction of p-nitrophenol with NaBH4. Interestingly, the catalytic activity depended on the size of Au NPs, being the highest when the average size was 3.4 nm. Relevant characterization by UV-Vis, TEM, and XRD was conducted.

Abstract:In this work, we report a controllable green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using chlorogenic acid (CGA) as the only reducing and stabilizing agent. The well-dispersed AuNPs are obtained due to the protection of CGA against aggregation. The resulting AuNPs are controllable in size and shape mainly by changing the molar ratio of HAuCl4 to CGA in reductive process. With an increase in CGA concentration, the average size of AuNPs increased, which resulted in different morphologies from spherical to flower-like shapes. The dropping speed of gold precursor is also found to influence the size of AuNPs in different trends. Additionally, the advantages of CGA for synergistic biological activities are demonstrated through the enhanced antioxidant activity of AuNPs with CGA for scavenging of DPPH radicals. The controllable size and shape of nanoparticles are potentially important in nanomedical application.

Abstract:The highly effective Au/Fe2O3-@Au/Fe2O3 nanoreactors for the 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction are successfully obtained by one-pot synthesis using the spray pyrolysis (SP) technique. The Au/Fe2O3-@Au/Fe2O3 nanoreactors manifest superior catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-NP in the presence of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) compared to gold-iron oxide nanoreactors prepared via a colloidal approach. The negative effect of the reaction product accumulation, the 4-aminophenol (4-AP), on the catalytic reduction of 4-NP over Au/Fe2O3-@Au/Fe2O3 is examined by a direct pre-injection of 4-AP to the reaction media. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first experimental evidence of gold active sites blocking by 4-AP. All obtained samples are characterized by the yolk-shell spherical hollow structure mainly consisted of two embedded hollow nanospheres. The reduction of iron oxide precursor concentration diminishes the diameter of final iron oxide nanospheres. According to STEM-EDS analysis and STEM, Au nano species are uniformly dispersed on both iron oxide nanospheres. The SP technique presently used to synthesize Au/Fe2O3-@Au/Fe2O3 nanoreactors manifests high potential for the one-pot fabrication of a large variety of nanoreactors with various active materials applied as heterogeneous catalysts in numerous catalytic processes.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been successfully synthesized using leaf extract of Neem (Azadirachta Indica), Mint (Mentha Piperita), Tulsi (Ocimum Tenuiflorum), Bermuda grass (Cynodon Dactylon) and silver salt. As plant extracts produce best capping material for the stabilization of nanoparticles. AgNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy in range of 200-800 nm and transmission electron microscopy TEM, XRD and FTIR. The nanoparticles synthesized were mainly in sizes between 25 and 100 nm. They appeared to be spherical, nanotriangles and irregular in shape. Catalytic application was observed for all the aqueous solution of leaves, quantity taken was 1 ml, 2 ml, 3 ml, 4 ml and 5 ml. Furthermore, prepared Ag nanoparticles are also used for seed germination.

Abstract:A simple, affordable and green method for synthesis gold (Au) and sliver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) has been adopted using Thyme plant ( Thymus kotschyanus ) extract. The plant extract, being rich in polyphenolic compounds, act as natural green reducing agent to generate noble metal NPs in situ from their corresponding ions. The structural and physical characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles were ascertained over Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Both of the NPs displayed Surface Resonance Plasmon (SPR) excitation. The Synthesized Ag/Thyme NPs and Au/Thyme NPs catalytically explored in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol in presence of sodium borohydride as hydrogen donor. While used in different concentrations (100 μg/mL, 200 μg/mL and 300 μg/mL) as catalyst, it was seen that the activity gradually increased with higher catalyst load. The kinetic study of the reactions was also performed using the UV–Vis analysis data. All the reactions were of pseudo first order kinetics. The catalysts were isolated by centrifuge and recycled 6 successive times without any significant loss of its catalytic activity. As a result, at the same conditions, the reaction in the presence of Au NPs is faster than the reaction in the presence of Ag NPs. In summary, the noble gold and silver nanoparticles were synthesized over Thyme plant extract in a bio-inspired pathway.

Abstract:Highly monodisperse, biocompatible and functionalizable sub-10-nm citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been synthesized following a kinetically controlled seeded-growth strategy. The use of traces of tannic acid together with an excess of sodium citrate during nucleation is fundamental in the formation of a high number (7 × 1013 NPs/mL) of small ∼3.5 nm Au seeds with a very narrow distribution. A homogeneous nanometric growth of these seeds is then achieved by adjusting the reaction parameters: pH, temperature, sodium citrate concentration and gold precursor to seed ratio. We use this method to produce Au NPs with a precise control over their sizes between 3.5 and 10 nm and a versatile surface chemistry allowing studying the size-dependent optical properties in this transition size regime lying between clusters and nanoparticles. Interestingly, an inflection point is observed for Au NPs smaller than 8 nm in which the sensitivity of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak position as a function of NPs size and surface modifications dramatically increase. These studies are relevant in the design of the final selectivity, activity and compatibility of Au NPs, especially in those (bio)applications where size is a critical parameter (e.g., biodistribution, multiplex labeling, and protein interaction).

Abstract:A series of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared in situ with different cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s) in an alkaline aqueous solution. The nanoparticle sizes can be well controlled by CB[n]s (n = 5, 6, 7, 8) with different ring sizes. The packing densities of CB[5–8] and free surface area on AuNPs were determined. A direct relationship was found between the ring size and packing density of CB[n]s with respect to the AuNP-catalyzed reduction of 4-nitrophenol in the presence of NaBH4. The larger particle size and higher surface coverage of bigger CB[n]-capped AuNPs significantly decreased the catalytic activity. Furthermore, this work could lead to new applications that utilize AuNPs under an overlayer of CB[n]s for catalysis, sensing, and drug delivery.

Abstract:A facile method for one-step synthesis of size-controlled gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) supported on collagen fiber (CF) at room temperature was proposed. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a typical plant polyphenol, was grafted onto CF surface to serve as reducing/stabilizing agent, so that the AuNPs were generated on CF surface without introduction of extra chemical reagents or physical treatments. The prepared AuNPs were fully characterized, and the results showed that the dispersed AuNPs were successfully produced and the mean particle size of AuNPs could be effectively controlled in range of 18 to 5 nm simply by varying the grafting degree of EGCG on CF surface. These stabilized AuNPs were found to be active heterogeneous catalysts for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in aqueous phase. The catalytic behaviors of AuNPs depended on the particle size and the grafting degree of EGCG. A distinct advantage of these catalysts is that they can be easily recovered and reused at least twenty times, because of the high stability of the AuNPs supported by EGCG-grafted CF.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has become increasingly important in modern society, and nanoparticles are routinely used in many areas of technology, industry, and commercial products. Many species of nanoparticle (NP) are typically synthesized using toxic or hazardous chemicals, making these methods less environmentally friendly. Consequently, there has been growing interest in green synthesis methods, which avoid unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals and reduce harmful waste. Synthesis methods which utilize food waste products are particularly attractive because they add value and a secondary use for material which would otherwise be disposed of. Here, we show that spent coffee grounds (SCGs) that have already been used once in coffee brewing can be easily used to synthesize gold and silver NPs. SCGs derived from medium and dark roasts of the same bean source were acquired after brewing coffee by hot brew, cold brew, and espresso techniques. The total antioxidant activity (TAC) and total caffeoylquinic acid (CQA) of the aqueous SCG extracts were investigated, showing that hot brew SCGs had the highest CQA and TAC levels, while espresso SCGs had the lowest. SCG extract proved effective as a reducing agent in synthesizing gold and silver NPs regardless of roast or initial brew method.
Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol and Photo Inhibition of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Using Gold Nanoparticles As Photocatalyst.

Abstract:A simple, green method is described for the synthesis of Gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) using Cotoneaster horizontalis extract as a phyto-reducer and capping agent with superior photo inhibition activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Different from the other methods used elevated temperatures for nanoparticles synthesis, the novelty of our method lies in its energy saving process and fast synthesis rates (~5min for AuNPs), and its potential to tune the nanoparticles size and afterward their catalytic activity. The starch, fatty acid and reducing sugars present in the extract are mostly responsible for repaid reduction rate Au+3 ions to AuNPs. Strong Plasmon resonance (SPR) of AuNPs was observed at 560nm, which indicates the formation of gold nanoparticles. Uv-visible spectroscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and energy dispersion X-ray diffraction (XRD) were preformed to find out the formation of AuNPs. Proficient reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) into 4-aminophenol (4-AP) in the presence of AuNPs and NaBH4 was observed and was found to depend upon the nanoparticle size or the extract concentration. The AuNPs was also evaluated for antibacterial against P. aeruginosa. Before transferred it into antibacterial activity, it placed under visible light for 120min. The same experiment was performed in dark as control medium. The photo irradiated AuNPs was observed to be more effective against P. aeruginosa. The result showed that diameter of zone of inhibition of visible light irradiated AuNPs against P. aeruginosa was 17 (±0.5) and in dark was 8 (±0.4) mm.

Abstract:Silica-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@SiO2) with controlled silica-shell thickness were prepared by a modified Stober’s method using 10-nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as seeds. The AuNPs were silica-coated with a sol–gel reaction using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a silica source and ammonia as a catalyst. An increase in TEOS concentration resulted in an increase in shell thickness. The NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning near-field ultrasound holography and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The method required no surface modification and the synthesized core shell nanoparticles can be used for various types of biological applications.

Abstract:The present work introduces a microwave assisted one pot green synthesis of gold nanoparticles using fresh leaves of a medicinal plant, Biophytumsensitivumas both the reducing and capping agent. The green synthesized gold nanoparticles are characterized using UV-vis, FT-IR, XRD, HRTEM and EDX analysis. The synthesized stable gold nanoparticles show a characteristic surface plasmon resonance peak at 534 nm in UV-vis. X-ray diffraction study confirms the crystalline nature of nanoparticles. The transmission electron microscopic analysis shows that the average size of nanoparticles is 37.92 nm.The catalytic properties of the synthesised green gold nanoparticles is depicted in the degradation of organic azo dye, congo red by sodium borohydride.The degradation reaction follows pseudo first order kinetics.

Abstract:Due to the serious pollution issue caused by 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), it is of great importance to design effective catalysts for its reduction. Here, a novel and simple strategy was developed for the synthesis of carbon dot-decorated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs/CDs) via the in situ carbonization of organic ligands on AuNPs at room temperature. The enhanced adsorption of 4-NP on CDs via pi-pi stacking interactions provided a high concentration of 4-NP near AuNPs, leading to a more effective reduction of 4-NP.

Abstract:We report on the use of black seed (Nigella sativa) extract, previously not exploited, in synthesis of gold nanoparticles. On treating aqueous chloroauric acid solution with black seed extract, the antioxidant activities critical roles of the various phytochemicals is observed leading to the formation of crystalline and poly shaped gold nanoparticles. In this research work, we developed a rapid and non-toxic method for the preparation of biocompatible gold nanoparticles by two different synthetic routes: microwave irradiation and thermo-induced procedures. The nanoparticles were characterized and investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The size and shape of the nanoparticles were found to be very sensitive to the quantity of the extract. As the amount of extract is increased, the stronger the interaction between the extract biomolecules and nascent nanoparticles, thus the yield of nanoparticles increased as shown by surface plasmon resonance bands in the UV-vis-NIR spectra. The reaction temperature has a significant role in production of gold nanoparticles with different shapes. The XRD studies reflect an interesting feature indicates that gold nanocrystals are highly anisotropic in nature, mainly triangular and hexagonal shapes, and that the particles are (111) oriented. The observed characteristics suggest the application of the biocompatible gold nanoparticles to future in vivo imaging and therapy.

Abstract:Abstract This study presents a sustainable method for producing iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO NPs) using aqueous extracts from coffee seeds. Characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed non-spherical NPs ranging from 30 to 50 nm. The XRD analysis confirmed that the face-centred cubic structure and the Debye–Scherrer’s crystalline size support the FeO particle size confirmed from TEM. The synthesized NPs demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , as well as antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger . Additionally, they exhibited potent antioxidant properties, effectively inhibiting DPPH, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase compared to acarbose and coffee extract. The findings suggest that these FeO NPs hold promise as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, and potentially antidiabetic agents.
