Abstract:Dynamic covalent chemistry has reshaped our understanding of chemically crosslinked polymer networks, with broad implications on self-healing, reprocessable, and reconfigurable functional networks. Amongst them, transesterification based polycaprolactone (PCL) networks represent prototypical thermadapt shape memory polymers with unique permanent shape reconfigurability. Despite several studies on this system, structural factors that impact the solid-state plasticity behind the shape reconfigurability are poorly understood. In this work, PCL networks with precisely tunable crosslinking density and hydroxyl content were synthesized using a thiol-ene click reaction. This allows independent evaluation on how these two critical structural parameters determine the network rearrangement kinetics. In particular, we clarify an ambiguity on the role of the hydroxyl groups in such networks. This study leads to PCL based thermadapt shape memory polymers with tunable performance. On a broader basis, it also offers useful guidelines in designing transesterification based dynamic networks.
Ultra-high Stretchability and Shape Fixation Rate Shape Memory Polyurethanes Based on Cyclic Polytetrahydrofuran Molecular Rings

Abstract:Chemical cross-linking is commonly used to prevent slippage between molecular chains in shape memory polymers (SMPs) to improve shape return. However, chemical cross-linking makes SMPs less stretchable, and the disordered network structure reduces the ability of SMPs to maintain temporary shapes. To obtain ultra-high stretchability and better shape memory properties, a cyclic polymer (C-PTHF-OH) was introduced into the shape memory polyurethane (PUCX) network, and the PUCX network topology was controlled by adjusting the content of C-PTHF-OH molecular rings. PUC0.5 exhibited the highest shape fixation (99.9%) and shape recovery (98.4%), and the higher the content of the C-PTHF-OH molecular ring, the higher the elongation at break of the prepared PUCX, with a slight decrease in tensile strength. Compared to PUC0 (2000% elongation at break and 32 MPa tensile strength) prepared from the linear polymer, PUC0.5 showed up to 2150% elongation at break and 31 MPa tensile strength. This study provides new ideas for the design of network structures for SMPs and is a new paradigm introduced into the SMPs network by cyclic topological polymers.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of low cross-linking polyurethanes are synthesized using polycaprolacton or polybutamethylene adipate or polyethylene-propylene adipate, MDI and glycerin. Their mechanical, thermal and dynamical properties and shape memory function are studied. The effect of soft segment structure, hard segment content and the structure of two domains on shape memory function are discussed. The differences between linear and cross-linking products have been investigated.

Abstract:Biodegradable shape memory polymers are promising biomaterials for minimally invasive surgical procedures. Herein, a series of linear biodegradable shape memory poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL)-based polyurethane ureas (PUUs) containing a novel phenylalanine-derived chain extender is synthesized. The phenylalanine-derived chain extender, phenylalanine-hexamethylenediamine-phenylalanine (PHP), contains two chymotrypsin cleaving sites to enhance the enzymatic degradation of PUUs. The degradation rate, the crystallinity, and mechanical properties of PUUs are tailored by the content of PHP. Meanwhile, semicrystalline PCL is not only hydrolytically degradable but also vital for shape memory. Good shape memory ability under body temperature is achieved for PUUs due to the strong interactions in hard segments for permanent crosslinking and the crystallization-melt transition of PCL to switch temporary shape. The PUUs would have a great potential in application as implanting stent.
A facile preparation strategy of polycaprolactone (PCL)-based biodegradable polyurethane elastomer with a highly efficient shape memory effect

Abstract:The shape memory properties of polycaprolactone-based polyurethanes (PCLUs) synthesized via a novel route of reactive extrusion were investigated in terms of the deformation amplitude, temperature, and rate by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analyzer, and polarized optical microscopy (POM). DSC analysis shows that the crystalline melting temperature and crystallinity of PCLU increased monotonically with increasing the average polymerization degree $ ( \overline {DPn}) $ of poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) block. The retract force increased with increasing the temperature and reached the maximum (67 MPa) within 45-55 degrees C. Furthermore, a modified model with two recovery stages was postulated to elucidate the shape memory process, which is visually presented by POM analysis. The two stages of tensile and compressive recovery are distinguished by the inflexion temperature, within 43-48 degrees C and 6466 degrees C, respectively. The shape fixity is about 60-70% and can be improved to 100% by choosing proper deformation temperature. The tensile deformation recovery ratio was 80-98% due to the water absorption, whereas the compressive deformation recovery ratio was almost 100%. Besides, recovery tests show that the lowest recovery temperature ranged from 24 to 47 degrees C was influenced by the deformation temperature, rate and the PCL block $ ( \overline {DPn}) $. Abstract:Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-based semi-crystalline polymers are shape memory polymers that have been extensively used in various applications ranging from biological, soft robots and flexible electronic devices. Despite the large number of studies aiming at constructing the well-defined crosslinked polymer networks, detailed investigations in terms of structural factors that influence the thermal-mechanical and shape memory properties are still poorly understand and investigated. In this work, PCL crosslinked networks with different molecular weight of diacrylate PCL macromonoter (M n ) are prepared via base-catalyzed thiol-ene Michael addition. The results indicate that the melting temperature, the crystallization temperature and the crystallinity of the polymer networks exhibit an upward trend with increment of M n . Besides that, the tensile strength and shape memory properties are also correlated with M n . Controlled-strain DMA characterization on shape memory properties show that the cPCL-10000 network exhibits the most remarkable shape fixity and shape recovery ratio, indicative of lowering cross-linking density and chains mobility. In particular, permanent shape reconfiguration can also be achieved by triggering transesterification within the same polymer network, and a possible molecular mechanism responsible for the elasticity-based shape memory effect and plasticity-based permanent shape reconfigurability is proposed and combined to present the 2D-to-3D shape-morphing behaviors.

Abstract:A series of poly(lactide)-based polyurethanes with cross-linked network structure was synthesized through the chain extension of three-arm branched poly(ɛ-caprolactone-co-γ-butyrolactone)-b-poly(lactide) (3PBCL-b-PLA) block copolymers with various molecular weights and optical activities of PLA blocks. The structure of the synthesized poly(lactide)-based polyurethanes was analyzed, and it was confirmed that they contained the cross-linked network structure. Effects of the molecular weight and optical activity of PLA block on the various properties such as crystallization, mechanical property, shape memory performance, thermal stability and hydration ability were discussed. By simultaneously adjusting the molecular weight and optical activity of PLA blocks, the crystallization of flexible PCBL blocks and rigid PLA blocks in the synthesized cross-linked polyurethanes was effectively controlled, which was the basis for constructing poly(lactide)-based polyurethanes with a broad ranged mechanical property, excellent shape memory properties and controllable hydration ability. The synthesized polyurethanes exhibited adjusted tensile strength and elongation at break in the range of 11.2 MPa∼32.4 MPa and 41%∼753%, with the water content varying from 1.1% to 20.1%, respectively. The shape fixity ratio and shape recovery ratio of L-PU2.9 could reach 90.9% and 96.0%, respectively. The effect of stereocomplex-crystallization on the properties of poly(lactide)-based polyurethane was also analyzed. Stereocomplexed polyurethane based on 3PCL-b-PLA block copolymer enantiomers with short PLA block was constructed, which achieves fully stereocomplexation in a wide mixing ratio (20%∼50%). It was found that the formation of a small number of stereocomplex-crystals can change the properties of poly(lactide)-based polyurethane in a wide range. Eventually, it was demonstrated by in vitro hemolysis test, cytotoxicity test and live/death staining that the synthetic poly(lactide)-based polyurethanes exhibited excellent biocompatibility. These results suggested that these biocompatible shape memory poly(lactide)-based polyurethanes with tunable mechanical properties and hydration ability demonstrated the promising potential as an excellent implantation for biomedical application.

Abstract:Multiblock copolymers (MBCPs) composing of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(tetrahydrofuran-co-caprolactone) (P(THF-co-CL)) segments are synthesized in a one-step process by "Janus polymerization", a newly raised synthetic protocol. Janus polymerization includes an anionic and a cationic ring-opening polymerization on both ends of a single living polymer chain, and finally couples into MBCPs. The well-defined MBCPs have relatively high molecular weights up to 131 kg/mol and exhibit thermoplastic elastic property with excellent elongation of 2610% in tensile tests. The repeating blocks form phase separation structures observed by AFM responsible for the elasticity. The biodegradable elastomers have negligible cytotoxicity. According to the physiochemical properties observed in this work, such multiblock elastic poly(ether-ester)s are promising materials in many fields. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Polycaprolactone( PCL) is a kind of excellent histocompatible and biodegradable materials due to the presence of amounts of esters that can be hydrolyzed by water or enzyme, which made PCL as one of Pure Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) certified medical materials. However, the high crystallinity and poor hydrophility of polycaprolactone induce slow biodegradation rate, poor tenacity and fatigue durability although it has high mechanical strength. Therefore, modification on polycaprolactone was necessary. Herein, we used isocyanates[hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) and isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI)] to modify polycaprolac?tone and the phosphorylated prepolymers were reacted with bifunctional epoxy to form crosslinked and biode?gradable elastomers. The test and analysis of mechanical properties, water contact angle, degradation/swelling and cell cytotoxicity in vitro indicated that the introduction of isocyanate helped to improve flexibility, fatigue resistance and degradation rate of the elastomers with no increased cytotoxicity.

Abstract:PCL based hybrid films exhibiting heat-responsive shape memory properties had been obtained by using Heptaphenyltricycloheptasiloxane Trihydroxy Silanol (T7-OH) as a cross-linker. The crystallization behaviors of the materials were studied in detail by DSC and XRD. The thermal properties of the materials were detected through TGA. The static mechanical properties, in vitro degradation and shape memory properties were also studied systematically. There was no remarkable T7-OH crystal plane diffraction peak according to XRD which indicated that T7-OH was well dispersed in the matrix. Meanwhile, according to the TGA, thermal degradation temperatures were increased significantly when T7-OH were added. It was worth noting that the materials possessed excellent shape memory properties with Rf > 97 % and Rr > 97 %.

Abstract:PCL-segmented multiallyl-functionalized poly (ester urethane) prepolymers (PEUs) were prepared in a two-step process. First, hydroxyl-terminated PCL and glycerol simultaneously reacted with an excess of a diisocyanate, the obtained isocyanate functionalized prepolymers then reacts with allyl amine. PEUs structure choice mainly focused on two aspects: the PCL segments concentration and the allyl functionality that, respectively, affects the biodegradability and the density of the issued networks. The concentrations of the different reactants were fixed, taking into account the desired mean structure and also to prevent crosslinking during the synthesis of the prepolymers. FTIR was principally used to monitor the synthesis of allyl functionalized PEUs. The carbonyl absorption of PCL, initially located at 1720 cm−1, reaction of the PCL and shifted toward 1730 cm−1, due to a decrease in crystallinity as confirmed by DSC. The structure of allyl-functionalized PCL-segmented PEU analyzed by 1H NMR, double bond content was between 0.2 and 1.2 mmol g−1. Networks were obtained by UV-initiated radical copolymerization of allyl-functionalized PEUs and HEMA. The effects of PCL concentration and molar mass on their thermomechanical and thermal properties were analyzed. Particular damping properties were obtained. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Shape Recovery and Reprocessing of Polyurethane Networks Crosslinked Via Host-Guest Inclusion Complexation of Adamantane with Β-Cyclodextrin

Abstract:In this contribution, we reported a novel strategy to crosslink polyurethane (PU) via host-guest inclusion complexations. First, a linear PU with adamantane (Ad) as side groups was synthesized with a 1,3-diol bearing adamantane as the chain extender. Thereafter, this linear PU was crosslinked with a poly(beta-cyclodextrin) through host-guest inclusion complexations to afford PU-Ad-CD networks. In comparison with the linear PU, the PU-AdCD networks exhibited improved mechanical properties with the Young's modulus of 43.21 MPa, which was more than eight times as that of the linear PU. The formation of inclusion complexes enabled the PU-Ad-CD networks to display reprocessing properties. In addition, the shape memory properties of the networks featured the reconfigurability of original shape with the aid of the exchange of the host-guest inclusion complexations. This study provides new insights into the development of high-performance PU materials.
Synthesis of Functional Polycaprolactones Via Passerini Multicomponent Polymerization of 6-Oxohexanoic Acid and Isocyanides

Abstract:We describe a straightforward strategy for a new family of functional polycaprolactones (PCL) via the Passerini multicomponent polymerization (P-MCP) of 6oxohexanoic acid and various isocyanides. Room temperature polymerization of tert-butyl isocyanide (1), 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide (2), mOEG4 isocyanide (3), 5-isocyanopent-1-ene (4), and 5-isocyanopent-1-yne (5) with 6-oxohexanoic acid in CH2C12 generated PCL analogues (Pl P5) with different pendent groups amide-linked to the epsilon-position of PCL backbone. Furthermore, copolymerization of a mixture of isocyanides 1 and 3 in different molar ratios with 6oxohexanoic acid produced copolymers (P6 P9) with adjustable properties. To demonstrate the high versatility of this platform polymer, polymer P4 with pendent alkene group was further modified with glucose via the thiol ene click reaction. The structures of these (co)polymers were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectroscopy. The thermal properties of these (co)polymers were examined by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All these polymers are amorphous with variable glass transition temperatures (T-g) depending on the side groups. For the copolymers, the dependence of T(g)s on comonomer composition was well predicted by the Fox equation. Degradation of water-soluble polymer P3 in aqueous solutions was investigated by H-1 NMR and SEC. It was revealed that P3 was stable in D2O or pD = 5.8 phosphate buffer (PB) up to 15 days, while it completely degraded in basic condition over a period of 6 h and in acidic condition over a period of 24 h. Interestingly, polymer P3 even degraded steadily in pD = 7.4 PB by a random hydrolysis mechanism. Two polymer samples were examined to be nontoxic. Thus, this novel class of PCL analogues can be easily engineered to tailor its material properties and degradation behavior and may have great potential as new degradable materials to meet biomedical applications.
Dynamic reversible bonds enable external stress-free two-way shape memory effect of a polymer network and the interrelated intrinsic self-healability of wider crack and recyclability

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method to prepare an external stress free two-way shape memory polymer. The core advance lies in the introduction of alkoxyamine moieties into the main chains of crystalline polycaprolactone (PCL) based crosslinked polyurethanes (PUs). By using the synchronous bond fission/radical recombination habit of C–ON bonds in alkoxyamine in a controlled manner, the stretched PU network undergoes uneven partial stress relaxation depending on the triggering status of C–ON bonds in the specific sites. Accordingly, the greatly relaxed portions tend to maintain the extended status, while the nearly unrelaxed portions tend to recover to their original undeformed shape. These two opposite tendencies successfully create an internal tensional force, which cooperates with the bidirectional deformation induced by melting/recrystallization of the crystalline phase and leads to two-way shape memory effect. Additionally, the dynamic reversibility of C–ON bonds further enables interrelated reprogramming, intrinsic self-healing of wider crack and recycling of the crosslinked PU. Such a diversity of smart stimuli-responsive properties is not available in the case of irreversible polymers.

Abstract:Polycaprolactone (PCL) polyols with different functionalities and molecular weights modified with phosphorylation or epoxidation were designed and synthesised, Based on the effective reaction of hydroxyl group of acidic phosphate ester (P-OH) and alicyclic epoxy (E), adjusting the-molar ratios of E/P-OH functional groups, without any additives (such as catalyst, initiator or solvent) that may have some potential risk of biological toxicity when being applied in real clinical situations, two types of cross-linked PCL phosphoester elastic materials were designed and prepared :PCL210P/PCL309E (being called "109" for short),PCL309P/ PCL309E (being called " 99 " for short), The structures of polyhydric alcohol of PCL modified with phosphorylation or epoxidation and cross-linked PCL phosphoester elastomers were characterized by H-1-NMR, P-31-NMR and FTIR. The test and analysis of compressive mechanical properties, water contact angle, the performance of degradation and cells cytotoxicity in vitro, indicated that the cross-linked PCL elastomers had good mechanical properties, biocompatibility and biodegradability. Besides this, the adjustment of mechanical properties and biodegradability of the cross-linked PCL phosphoester elastic materials can be achieved within a certain range by adjusting the E/P-OH molar ratios and functionalities of PCL monomers.
Reprocessing and Shape Recovery of Polyurethane Enabled by Crosslinking with Poly(β-Cyclodextrin) Via Host-Guest Interactions

Abstract:A 1,3-diol bearing an 18-carbon alkyl chain was synthesized via the esterification of stearyl alcohol with 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid. This 1,3-diol was employed as the chain extender to synthesize a linear multi-segmented polyurethane (PU) carrying long alkyl side chains. It was found that the linear PU was readily crosslinked with poly(β-cyclodextrin) [viz. P(β-CD)], i.e., the supramolecular networks were obtained. The supramolecular crosslinking was generated via the inclusion complexation of P(β-CD) with the long alkyl chains of PU. The more the incorporation of P(β-CD), the higher the crosslinking densities. Compared to the linear PU, the PU-CD networks had the enhanced Yong's moduli and tensile strengths. Thanks to the supramolecular crosslinking, the PU-CD networks had the shape memory properties. It was found that the recovery of shape was quite dependent on the quantity of the inclusion complexation linkages. In addition, the PU-CD networks can be reprocessed (or recycled); the reprocessed PU-CD networks had the recovery of mechanical properties as high as 95%. The dynamic exchange of inclusion complexation is responsible for the reprocessing properties. Furthermore, the reprocessing behavior was successfully utilized to reprogram the original shapes of the shape memory networks.

Abstract:A series of degradable poly(propylene oxide)-poly(L-lactide)-polyurethane (POLA-PU) shape memory polymers were synthesized by crosslinking triarm POLA diblock copolymers with tolylene diisocyanate (TDI). The mechanical properties of POLA-PU could be conveniently adjusted through variation of composition to prepare materials from high modulus and low elongation at break to low modulus and high elongation at break. The transition temperatures of POLA-PU were between 96 and 153 C by thermomechanical analysis (TMA) and the restoration time was less than 20 s in 140 degrees C. When the deformations from the permanent to the temporary shape were up to 200%, POLA-PU samples had a shape fixity rate between 65% and 100% and a shape recovery rate of 100%. Shape memory behavior relies on the cross-linking densities, and this effect can be achieved with changing conformational entropy of soft chains in different temperatures. The degradation of POLA-PU was investigated in 10% NaOH at 80 degrees C. The results showed that the PLLA segments were introduced to novel shape memory materials with the degradable property, and the rate of degradation was decreased with decreasing the PLLA segments content.
