Abstract:Oxidative cracking of polyolefins into functionalized molecules or oligomers promises the chemical upcycling of plastic wastes. In this work, we develop a novel approach to polyolefin waste upcycling that utilizes low-temperature oxidative cracking combined with dynamic cross-linking to produce recyclable elastomers. High-density polyethylene is oxidized into functionalized oligomers with end carboxyl groups at 110 degrees C, achieving tunable number-average molecular weights (M n) ranging from 1500 to 5500 Da at distributions (D) between 2.91 and 3.33. These oligomers with high crystallinity directly react with amorphous cis-polybutadiene containing pendant epoxy groups (an oxidized product of cis-polybutadiene) through esterification, forming a dynamically cross-linked elastomer. The elastomer displays a low glass transition temperature (T g) of approximately -100 degrees C while maintaining a melting point (T m) above 80 degrees C; it showcases a Young ' s modulus (E) of 12.0 +/- 0.4 MPa, elongation at break (epsilon) of 600 +/- 28%, tensile strength (sigma) of 16.4 +/- 0.8 MPa, tensile toughness (U T) of 46.0 +/- 3.5 MJ center dot m-3, and a good elasticity with 81.8% elastic recovery in a 10-cycle tensile test, even higher than that of commercial POEs such as POE-8150 of Dow Company. The dynamic ester-bond-based cross-linking enables the elastomer to be reprocessed. Our study introduces an efficient chemical upcycling process for polyolefin wastes, eliminating the need for tedious separation steps of cracking products.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent chemistry has reshaped our understanding of chemically crosslinked polymer networks, with broad implications on self-healing, reprocessable, and reconfigurable functional networks. Amongst them, transesterification based polycaprolactone (PCL) networks represent prototypical thermadapt shape memory polymers with unique permanent shape reconfigurability. Despite several studies on this system, structural factors that impact the solid-state plasticity behind the shape reconfigurability are poorly understood. In this work, PCL networks with precisely tunable crosslinking density and hydroxyl content were synthesized using a thiol-ene click reaction. This allows independent evaluation on how these two critical structural parameters determine the network rearrangement kinetics. In particular, we clarify an ambiguity on the role of the hydroxyl groups in such networks. This study leads to PCL based thermadapt shape memory polymers with tunable performance. On a broader basis, it also offers useful guidelines in designing transesterification based dynamic networks.
Network Alteration of Cyclically Loaded Elastomers Mediated by Dynamic Bonds

Abstract:Elastomers and hydrogels with dynamic network structures have received considerable research interest due to their high strength and toughness, and self-healing ability. While the general mechanical responses of dynamic polymer networks have been investigated, the study on their fatigue behaviors is still in its infancy. In this work, we employ experimental and theoretical approaches to gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical response of an elastomer with physical crosslinkers under fatigue tests up to 10,000 cycles. The constitutive model characterizes the network configuration using the density distribution function of the polymer chains, which is represented by a state variable denoting the stress-free configuration of each individual chain. The model takes into account the reversible dissociation/association of dynamic bonding facilitated by the physical crosslinkers. As a result, polymer chains can repeatedly release the involved strain energy and transform between different stress-free configurations. A multidispersed reaction process is further employed to describe the state transition of polymer chains, enabling the model to elucidate the progressive damage in long-term relaxation and fatigue tests by recording and updating the density distribution function of chain state. In addition, the reversible transition of the polymer chain between different state configurations enables the model to capture the rate-dependent stress response and relaxation behaviors of physically crosslinked elastomers and gels. Remarkably, our microscopic model, which requires only five parameters, offers an efficient approach to describe the mechanical responses of elastomers and gels with dynamic bonds.

Abstract:Soft materials featuring dynamic networks represent a burgeoning frontier in materials science, offering multifaceted applications spanning soft robotics, biomaterials, and flexible electronics. Unraveling the time-dependent constitutive behavior of these materials, rooted in dynamic networks, stands as a pivotal pursuit for engineering advancements. Herein, we fabricate a tough and extreme-temperature-tolerant glycerogel with a polymer network crosslinked by metal-coordination crosslinkers and conduct a thorough analysis of its intricate mechanical responses across monotonic loading, relaxation, creep, and cyclic tests. We then develop a physically grounded constitutive model integrating the dynamics of crosslinker association/dissociation and polymer chain diffusion, furnishing a holistic framework to elucidate their interplay. We employ a statistical description, using density functions of chains in terms of end-to-end vectors, to characterize network reconfiguration. The evolution of chain density under external load, mediated by crosslinker kinetics and chain diffusion in a viscous medium, leads to intriguing variations in elastic energy and stress responses. Through meticulous experimental validation and numerical simulations, we demonstrate the efficacy of the model in forecasting the mechanical behavior of dynamic polymer networks under diverse loading scenarios, encompassing strain rate effects, stress relaxation, Mullins effect, and self-recovery phenomena. Our findings provide valuable insights into the design and optimization of dynamic network-based materials for diverse applications in biomedical and engineering fields.

Abstract:A series of P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA tri-block co-polymers with various compositions, i.e., containing 2-10 lactoyl units, were prepared via ring opening polymerisation of d,l-lactide in the presence of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) (M-n = 1000 gmol(-1)) as the initiator and stannous 2-ethylhexanoate as the catalyst at different feed ratios. P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA co-polymers were then functionalised with acrylate groups using acryloyl chloride under various reaction conditions. The diacrylated P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA (diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA) were further polymerised to synthesize soluble hyperbranched polymers by either homo-polymerisation or co-polymerisation with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methylacrylate (PEGMEMA) via free radical polymerisation. The polymer samples obtained were characterised by H-1 NMR (proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-red spectroscopy), and GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography). Moreover, the diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA macromers were used for the preparation of biodegradable crosslinked hydrogels through the Michael addition reaction and radical photo-polymerisation with or without poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methylacrylate (PEGMEMA, M-n = 475 gmol(-1)) as the co-monomer. It was found that fine tuning of the diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA constituents and its combination with co-monomers resulted in hydrogels with tailored swelling properties. It is envisioned that soluble hyperbranched polymers and crosslinked hydrogels prepared from diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA macromers can have promising applications in the fields of nano-medicines and regenerative medicines.

Abstract:Polymer networks cross-linked by dynamic covalent bonds possess outstanding mechanical and rheological properties and are expected to be potential alternatives to conventional thermosets. However, while many recent studies of dynamically cross-linked thermosets focused on the employment of small molecular cross-linkers, the macro-cross-linking approach and the corresponding thermosets have been less demonstrated. In this work, reconfigurable and catalyst-free thermosets were synthesized by dynamic polymer-polymer interaction based on reversible boronic ester bond, providing simple and efficient access toward materials with improved mechanical strength and toughness in comparison to related commodity thermoplastics. The dynamic exchange of covalent bonds dispersed between polymer chains enables the materials to be malleable, recyclable, and healable under thermal conditions and readily processable with mechanical mixing without solvent. Moreover, the materials' mechanical and rheological properties could be tuned by changing the cross-linking density. Although the dynamic networks exhibited good resistance against organic solvents, they could be cleaved as triggered by acids or diols and recycled through the de-cross-linking/re-cross-linking pathway. Given the dramatically increasing interest in environmentally sustainable materials, this polymer-polymer interaction mode provides a robust approach to engineering polymers with improved performance compared with the thermoplastic counterparts.

Abstract:Linear and star‐shaped poly(ε‐caprolactone‐co‐α‐methylene‐γ‐butyrolactone) P(CL‐co‐MBL) copolyesters with a pendant functional double bond of α‐methylene‐γ‐butyrolactone (MBL) comonomer were used as polymeric precursor for organo‐gels formation. Crosslinking was carried out by light‐initiated thia‐Michael reaction using 1,5‐pentanedithiol (PDT) and pentaerythritol tetrakis(3‐mercaptopropionate) (PETK). Double bond conversion and the content of free thiol groups in the obtained networks was followed and rationally estimated using confocal Raman spectroscopy. The gel content and the crosslinking density varied based on MBL comonomer and crosslinker content and were highest for slight thiol to double bond excess (SH/vinyl; 2/1 molar ratio) while decreasing with further thiol excess. These parameters were more pronounced by the replacement of linear PDT with the star‐shaped PETK crosslinker. The thermal and rheological properties investigation of the obtained materials was performed employing DSC, TGA and using frequency and temperature sweeps rheological measurements. Shear moduli in the range 0.14 up to 0.93 MPa were obtained due to different content of MBL in pre‐polymer and crosslinker in network formation. The strength was caused by the crystalline phase of the PCL segments up to a temperature of 50°C. Formed thioether bond within the network were not reversible up to 150°C as it was found based on temperature sweep rheology. Following, the activation and conversion of thioether bonds within the obtained materials into trialkylsulfonium salts was attained through the alkylation using butyl brosylate. The dynamic nature of the transalkylation at elevated temperature 150°C allowed network rearrangement, which was proved by stress relaxation experiment and investigation of the self‐healing capabilities.

Abstract:The reprocessable and chemically recyclable cross‐linked elastomers were prepared via a tandem ring‐opening polymerization and photo‐crosslinking strategy from bio‐renewable β‐methyl‐δ‐valerolactone and thioctic acid. Due to the lack of effective physical reprocessing or chemical recovery capabilities, thermosetting polymers face long‐term post‐disposing problems. The introduction of dynamic covalent bonds can effectively combine reprocessing ability with typical robust properties of thermosetting polymer. However, after multiple reprocessing treatments, thermosets often suffer significant decrease in mechanical properties, so the chemical recycling and reuse is crucial and necessary for the sustainable development of thermosetting polymers. Herein, a series of polyesters PβMδVL‐TA with mono‐ or bis‐terminal cyclic disulfide bond was first synthesized via esterification between terminal hydroxyl of PβMδVL and carboxyl of thioctic acid (TA). Then, the thermosetting elastomer with both physical reprocessability and chemical recyclability was prepared by simple UV‐triggered ring‐opening polymerization of cyclic disulfide. By regulating cross‐linking sites and the molecular weight of the mono‐ or bis‐PβMδVL‐TA, such polyester elastomers exhibit good tensile strength and elasticity with elastic recovery can reach 98% after 10 cycles. Furthermore, the dynamic reaction of disulfide bonds induced by hot pressing and UV light enables multiple reprocessing of cross‐linked elastomers. Remarkably, the efficient chemical recycling of the elastomers was achieved to recover pristine βMδVL monomer with 90% yield in the presence of ZnCl2 as the catalyst at 130°C.

Abstract:Dynamic cross-linked polymers (DCPs) are supposed to possess favorable reprocessability and degradability as well as excellent thermal and mechanical properties. However, achieving rapid reprocessing and high performance for DCPs is still a formidable challenge. Herein, a strategy of using synergistic catalysis effect between different kinds of dynamic bonds (imine bond, disulfide bond and multiple hydrogen bond) to accelerate the dynamic exchange reactions was proposed and verified through small-molecule model reactions and DFT simulation computation, and it was applied to prepare high-performance and rapidly reprocessable DCPs. In addition, the viscosity of the DCPs decreased with raising shear rate in virtue of the dissociation of dynamic bonds in the network, as a result, which made this material promising for preparing polyurethane composites through resin film infusion (RFI). Furthermore, the RFI process was stimulated and confirmed by Moldex 3D. This work revealed the dynamic exchange accelerating mechanism for multiple dynamic systems and provide a strategy to produce DCPs combining high performance and excellent reprocessability.

Abstract:Hydroxyl‐terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is found in many applications due to its ease of manufacturing, useful mechanical properties over a wide temperature range, and reactive hydroxyl chain ends. Typically, HTPB is crosslinked with isocyanates to form polyurethane thermosets. Limitations of this approach include the use of toxic isocyanates and the oxidative instability of backbone alkenes. In this work, saturated HTPB is used to form reprocessable covalent adaptable networks that are capable of stress relaxation and reprocessing, without relying on isocyanates or unstable alkenes. This approach introduces dynamic chemistry to the HTPB network via chain extension and subsequent crosslinking with 4‐methyl caprolactone (4mCL) and a novel bislactone crosslinker. Using benzenesulfonic acid (BSA) as a transesterification catalyst, stress relaxation times range from 150 to 8 min at temperatures of 70 to 100 °C. Despite crosslinking, these networks behave elastically, as evidenced by strain‐at‐break values of 93% for pristine samples, and dynamically, as shown by a strain‐at‐break of 72% after reprocessing the damaged samples. Shape reprogramming is also demonstrated by straining the crosslinked networks and heating to elevated temperatures where bond exchange occurs. These findings illustrate the advantageous properties that can be achieved by using cheap commodity building blocks to achieve dynamic properties. We anticipate that valorizing commodity polymers into reprocessable thermosets will be of utility in applications that lack other viable recycling pathways.

Dynamically Cross-Linked Polyolefin Elastomers with Highly Improved Mechanical and Thermal Performance

Abstract:The controllable introduction of dynamical chemical cross-linking into polymers permits the development of recyclable polymer products with high performance. However, challenges lie in chemically inert polyolefins, which are the largest polymer product in the world to date. Here, we demonstrate the preparation of polyolefin elastomers (POEs) with tunable dynamic chemical cross-linking, compatible with their industrial production. Boronic ester bond cross-linked POEs (BPOEs) present high mechanical performances with tensile strength (σ) up to 23.8 MPa, Young’s modulus (E) up to 29.0 MPa, and toughness (U T) up to 69.6 MJ·m–3, far superior to those reported elastomers. BPOEs also demonstrate good thermal stability maintaining a steady storage modulus plateau of 2.9 MPa above 100 °C, instead of 0.2 MPa for pristine POEs. After reprocessing three times, BPOEs show a good reprocessability with a σ recovery of 85.6%, an E of 108.5%, a U T of 95.7%, and an elongation at break (ε) of 97.1%, even higher than that of commercial POEs such as POE-8150 of Dow Company. Our method thus permits the future development of higher-performance POEs and other polyolefins with good reprocessability and recyclability.

Abstract:The dynamic crosslinking method has been widely used to prepare rubber/plastic blends with thermoplastic properties, and the rubber phase is crosslinked in these blends. Both polyolefin elastomer (POE) and ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) can be crosslinked, which is different from usual dynamic crosslinking components. In this paper, dynamic crosslinked POE/EPDM blends were prepared. For POE/EPDM blends without dynamic crosslinking, EPDM can play a nucleation role, leading to POE crystallizing at a higher temperature. After dynamic crosslinking, the crosslinking points hinder the mobility of POE chains, resulting in smaller crystals, but having too many crosslinking points suppresses POE crystallization. Synchrotron radiation studies show that phase separation occurs and phase regions form in non-crosslinked blends. After crosslinking, crosslinking points connecting EPDM and part of POE chains, enabling more POE to enter the EPDM phase and thus weakening phase separation, indicates that dynamic crosslinking improves the compatibility of POE/EPDM, also evidenced by a lower β conversion temperature and higher α conversion temperature than neat POE from dynamic mechanical analysis. Moreover, crosslinking networks hinder the crystal fragmentation during stretching and provide higher strength, resulting in 8.3% higher tensile strength of a 10 wt% EPDM blend than neat POE and almost the same elongation at break. Though excessive crosslinking points offer higher strength, they weaken the elongation at break.

Abstract:This work takes advantage of the unique thermally reversible dissociation/association feature of C-ON bonds in alkoxyamine (Diol) to facilitate the reprocessability of poly(butyl methanol methacrylate) (PBMM) rubber with excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Isocyanate groups were incorporated into the PBMM backbone and then reacted with hydroxyl groups in Diol to obtain cross-linked PBMM rubber. Although its cross-linking degree is slightly lower than the conventional cross-linked rubber by an irreversible cross-linker (Dieg), it shows a higher tensile strength and elongation at break. Its decomposition temperature is about 50 degrees C higher than PBMM cross-linked by Dieg. Furthermore, the dissociation of C-ON bond at high temperature can break the cross-linking network of PBMM rubber to form a flowable and reprocessable melt and show an excellent ability of reshaping and healing; the association of thermally reversible C-ON bond can completely recover the cross-linking network and mechanical properties at a low temperature.
Well-defined synthetic copolymers with pendent aldehydes form biocompatible strain-stiffening hydrogels and enable competitive ligand displacement

Abstract:Dynamic hydrogels are attractive platforms for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, but there are limited polymer platforms amenable to the formation of these dynamic materials. Most architectures reported are based either on telechelic synthetic polymers or side-chain modified natural polymers; synthetic versions of side-chain modified polymers are noticeably absent. Dynamic hydrogels are key tools for their ability to mimic key extracellular (ECM) mechanical properties like strain stiffening and stress relaxation, while enabling enhanced processing characteristics like injectability, 3D printing, and self-healing. Currently, the limited chemical design space is hindering progress. To facilitate access to new classes of dynamic hydrogels, we report the straightforward synthesis of a water-soluble copolymer with a tunable fraction of pendent aldehyde groups (12–64%) using controlled radical polymerization, and their formation into hydrogel biomaterials with dynamic crosslinks. We found the polymer synthesis to be well-controlled with the determined reactivity ratios consistent with blocky gradient microarchitecture. Subsequently, we observed fast gelation kinetics with imine-type crosslinking. We were able to vary hydrogel stiffness from ≈ 2–20 kPa and tune the onset of strain-stiffening towards a biologically relevant regime (critical stress ≈ 10 Pa). Moreover, we used fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to demonstrate ligand displacement along the copolymer backbone via competitive binding and highlighted the cytocompatibility of our system using human dermal fibroblasts. The combination of highly tunable composition, stiffness, and strain-stiffening, in conjunction with temporal control over ligand exchange/presentation, positions these cytocompatible copolymers as a powerful synthetic platform for the rational design of next generation synthetic biomaterials.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to replace elastomer crosslinking based on chemical covalent bonds by reversible systems under processing. One way is based on ionic bonds creation, which allows a physical crosslinking while keeping the process reversibility. However, due to the weak elasticity recovery of such a physical network after a long period of compression, the combination of both physical and chemical networks was studied. In that frame, an ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer grafted with maleic anhydride (EPDM-g-MA) was crosslinked with metal salts and/or dicumyl peroxide (DCP). Thus, the influence of these two types of crosslinking networks and their combination were studied in detail in terms of compression set. The second part of this work was focused on the influence of different metallic salts (KOH, ZnAc2) and the sensitivity to the water of the physical crosslinking network. Finally, the combination of ionic and covalent network allowed combining the processability and better mechanical properties in terms of recovery elasticity. KAc proved to be the best ionic candidate to avoid water degradation of the ionic network and then to preserve the elasticity recovery properties under aging.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and the crystal morphological structures of the dynamically photocrosslinked polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) blends have been studied by means of mechanical tests, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The dynamically photocrosslinking of the PP/EPDM blends can improve the mechanical properties considerably, especially the-notched Izod impact strength at low temperatures. The data obtained from the mechanical tests show that the notched Izod impact strength of the dynamically photocrosslinked sample with 30% EPDM at -20degreesC is about six times that of the uncrosslinked sample with the same EPDM component. The results from the gel content, the results of WAXD, and the DSC measurements reveal the enhanced mechanism of the impact strength for the dynamically photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends as follows: (1) There exists the crosslinking of the EPDM phase in the photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends; (2) The beta-type crystal structure of PP is formed and the content of a-type crystal decreases with increasing the EPDM component; (3) The graft copolymer of PP-g-EPDM is formed at the interface between the PP and EPDM components. All the above changes of the crystal morphological structures are favorable for increasing the compatibility and enhancing the toughness of the PP/EPDM blends at low temperatures.

Abstract:Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) have attracted increasing attention for a wide variety of industrial and biomedical applications owing to their unique properties compared to those of traditional rubbers. To develop high-performance engineering TPEs and reduce the environmental pollution caused by plastic waste, α,ω-hydroxyl-terminated polycaprolactone (PCL) polyols with molecular weights of 1000-4200 g mol-1 and polydispersity index (Ð) of 1.30-1.88 are synthesized via the ring-opening polymerization of sustainable ε-caprolactone using a heterogeneous double metal cyanide catalyst. The resulting PCL polyols are employed as soft segments to produce thermoplastic poly(ester ester) elastomers and are compared to conventional thermoplastic poly(ether ester) elastomers prepared from polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG). Notably, the PCL-based TPEs exhibit superior mechanical properties and biodegradability compared to PTMEG-based TPEs owing to their crystallinity and microphase separation behaviors. Accordingly, they have 39.7 MPa ultimate strength and 47.6% biodegradability, which are much higher than those of PTMEG-based TPEs (23.4 MPa ultimate strength and 24.3% biodegradability). The introduction of biodegradable PCLs demonstrates significant potential for producing biodegradable TPEs with better properties than polyether-derived elastomers.

Abstract:Biomaterials are a crucial issue in the field of tissue engineering. Two types of polymeric biomaterials, such as Poly(glycerol Itaconic acid) (PGIt) and Poly(ɛ-caprolactone) diol (PCL-diol), were synthesized by polycondensation and ring opening polymerization (ROP) respectively. The PCL-diol was selected as a minor phase with 30 and 50 wt%, and Closite-Na + was selected as the nanophase with a constant amount of 5 wt%. Molecular structures PGIt and PCL-diol were analyzed by FTIR, 1 H-NMR, and GPC techniques. Microstructures showing the presence of PCL-diol in the PGIt have not created compatible morphologies, albeit the presence of clay nanoparticles has helped to achieve the proper morphologies. Low angle XRD showed exfoliated, and intercalated morphologies can be predicted to pure PGIt and PGIt 70 PCLdiol 30 Clay 5 samples. Mechanical analysis showed that Young's modulus and elongation at the break of PGIt 50 PCLdiol 50 Clay 5 and PGIt 100 samples were higher than other samples. DMTA analysis showed that adding PCL-diol into the PGIt increased glass transition temperature ( T g ) and storage modulus at 37 °C. The master curve of the studied samples was prepared by the WLF equation at body temperature. Hydrocatalytical degradation, contact angles, and MTT analysis showed that all samples behave well in biological conditions. Cell adhesion, Dapi, and Alizarin red analysis were carried out on the selected samples, and their results showed that the presence of PCL-diol and Clay into the PGIt has improved the biological behavior of the sample and PGIt 50 PCLdiol 50 Clay 5 shows just behavior.

Abstract:Polymer networks with dynamic bonds, also known as covalent adaptable networks (CANs) combine the superior mechanical properties and chemical resistance of thermosets with the ability to be reprocessed, a feat formerly attributed only to thermoplastics. Inspired by an evergrowing body of research on dynamic poly(β-hydroxy ester) networks, a polyacrylate/epoxy-acid thermoset was designed, which contains a high concentration of β-hydroxy ester bonds that partake in transesterification reactions that facilitate the repair and recycle of the cured material at feasible temperatures. Firstly, liquid formulations are subjected to UV light to initiate acrylate homopolymerization to obtain the intermediate, partially-cured material. A subsequent thermal treatment triggers the epoxy-acid reaction, which improves the mechanical properties and helps increase the likelihood of transesterifications as new β-hydroxy ester groups are formed. The effect of thermal post-treatment and the choice of catalyst on viscoelastic properties and stress relaxation behavior of these materials is studied. Results show that, transesterification reactions reach equilibrium in less than 4 hours at 180°C during which time the overall cross-linking density increases further. As to the choice of catalyst, a commonly used zinc acetylacetonate outperforms an imidazole-type base. Thanks to the dynamic bonds, damaged samples can be repaired fully using simple procedures. Recyclability is tested by grinding pristine samples and re-molding them under pressure and temperature. Practically complete recovery of viscoelastic properties is confirmed.
