Abstract:Oxidative cracking of polyolefins into functionalized molecules or oligomers promises the chemical upcycling of plastic wastes. In this work, we develop a novel approach to polyolefin waste upcycling that utilizes low-temperature oxidative cracking combined with dynamic cross-linking to produce recyclable elastomers. High-density polyethylene is oxidized into functionalized oligomers with end carboxyl groups at 110 degrees C, achieving tunable number-average molecular weights (M n) ranging from 1500 to 5500 Da at distributions (D) between 2.91 and 3.33. These oligomers with high crystallinity directly react with amorphous cis-polybutadiene containing pendant epoxy groups (an oxidized product of cis-polybutadiene) through esterification, forming a dynamically cross-linked elastomer. The elastomer displays a low glass transition temperature (T g) of approximately -100 degrees C while maintaining a melting point (T m) above 80 degrees C; it showcases a Young ' s modulus (E) of 12.0 +/- 0.4 MPa, elongation at break (epsilon) of 600 +/- 28%, tensile strength (sigma) of 16.4 +/- 0.8 MPa, tensile toughness (U T) of 46.0 +/- 3.5 MJ center dot m-3, and a good elasticity with 81.8% elastic recovery in a 10-cycle tensile test, even higher than that of commercial POEs such as POE-8150 of Dow Company. The dynamic ester-bond-based cross-linking enables the elastomer to be reprocessed. Our study introduces an efficient chemical upcycling process for polyolefin wastes, eliminating the need for tedious separation steps of cracking products.
Creep-induced Anisotropy in Covalent Adaptable Network Polymers.

Abstract:Anisotropic polymers with aligned macromolecule chains exhibit directional strengthening of mechanical and physical properties. However, manipulating the orientation of polymer chains in a fully cured thermoset is almost impossible due to its permanently crosslinked nature. In this paper, we demonstrate that rearrangeable networks with bond exchange reactions (BERs) can be utilized to tailor the anisotropic mechanical properties of thermosetting polymers. When a constant force is maintained at BER activated temperatures, the malleable thermoset creeps in the direction of stress, and macromolecule chains align themselves in the same direction. The aligned polymer chains result in an anisotropic network with a stiffer mechanical behavior in the direction of creep, while with a more compliant behavior in the transverse direction. The degree of network anisotropy is proportional to the amount of creep strain. A multi-length scale constitutive model is developed to study the creep-induced anisotropy of thermosetting polymers. The model connects the micro-scale BER kinetics, orientation of polymer chains, and directional mechanical properties of network polymers. Without any fitting parameters, it is able to predict the evolution of creep strain at different temperatures and anisotropic stress-strain behaviors of CANs after creep. Predictions on the chain orientation are verified by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Based on parametric studies, it is shown that the influences of creep time and temperature on the network anisotropy can be generalized into a single parameter, and the evolution of directional modulus follows an Arrhenius type time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP). The presented work provides a facile approach to transform isotropic thermosets into anisotropic ones using simple heating, and their directional properties can be readily tailored by the processing conditions.
Reconfigurable and Orthogonal Stiffness‐structure Patterning of Dynamically Crosslinked Amphigels

Abstract:Abstract Patterning diversified properties and surface structure of polymer materials are of great importance toward their potential in biology, optics, and electronics. However, achieving both the patternability of stiffness and microstructure in a reconfigurable manner remains challenging. Here, we prepare amphigels crosslinked by dynamic disulfide bonds, which can be reversibly swollen by immiscible water or liquid paraffin. In the paraffingel form, the materials exhibited a high modulus of 130 MPa due to densified hydrogen bonds. Whereas swollen by water, the modulus fell over two orders of magnitude owing to the destruction of the hydrogen bonds. Via regionalized swelling of the solvents, well‐controlled and rewritable soft/stiff mechanical patterns can be created. On the other hand, the dynamic exchange of the disulfide crosslinking enables mechanophoto patterning to fabricate sophisticated macrogeometries and microstructures. The reconfigurable stiffness‐structure patterning can be manipulated orthogonally, which will create more application opportunities beyond conventional hydrogels and organogels.
Significantly improved electromechanical performance of dielectric elastomers via alkyl side-chain engineering

Abstract:Dielectric elastomers (DEs) can be deformed in response to an electric field. Combining many muscle-like attributes like mechanical compliance, a very fast response, large actuation strain, a high energy density, noiseless actuation, and light weight, DEs are considered to be leading materials for "artificial muscles". Herein, we report a new strategy to significantly improve the electromechanical performance of an elastomer by decreasing the chain entanglement density. A series of symmetric polystyrenepolyalkylacrylate-polystyrene triblock copolymers were synthesized using reversible additional fragmental transfer polymerization, where the chain entanglement density was varied by changing the bulkiness of the side groups of polyalkylacrylate. It is found that the voltage-induced maximum strain and energy density both quickly increase because the modulus is quickly decreased while the electric breakdown is little affected with an increase of the bulkiness of the alkyl side groups. The maximum actuation strain of polystyrene-poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate)-polystyrene (SEHAS, 25% at 28 kV mm(-1), without prestretch) and energy density (4.4 kJ m(-3)) are significantly higher than those of the state-of-the-art single component thermal plastic DEs. The actuation performance of SEHAS is comparable to that of the mammalian skeletal muscle. The other attractive attributes of SEHAS include thermal plasticity, relatively high tensile strength and a very low glass temperature (-68 degrees C) of the elastic phase.

Abstract:Here, we show that oxy-functionalization at specific sites along polydiketoenamine (PDK) backbones affects depolymerization rates by over three orders of magnitude, due to differences in distortion energies associated with reactive chain conformations in transition states for acidolysis. Site-specific oxy-functionalization, resulting in the fastest rates of acidolysis, opens the door to deconstructing linear PDK chain topologies for the first time, broadening the scope of applications for PDK plastics in a circular manufacturing economy, including chemically recyclable adhesives for a diverse range of surfaces.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent bonds have received tremendous attention since they endowed classical crosslinked polymers with new properties, including self-healing, stimuli-responsive, anti-bacterial, and recycling properties. The dynamic crosslinked polymers combined the merits of thermoset and thermoplastic elastomers. However, the dynamic nature also compromised the heat resistance of dynamic crosslinked polymers, especially the creep resistance at high temperatures. Herein, a hexahydroxy azine crosslinker was synthesized and used to prepare a range of azine-based polyurethane elastomers (PUEs). The exchange reactions of small molecular model compounds revealed that the azine moieties could exchange fast at 150 °C. The resulting azine-based PUEs showed outstanding thermal stabilities and mechanical properties owing to the conjugated structure and related hydrogen bonds of azine. The obtained azine-based PUEs also exhibited a high creep temperature of 150 °C thanks to the relatively higher exchange temperature of azine moieties and high functionality of the azine crosslinker. The degradation process of azine-based PUEs displayed solvent and acid strength dependence. The excellent reprocessing properties of azine-based PUEs were attributed to the distribution of the azine moieties both in the backbone and crosslinking points. This study provides an alternative way to solve the creep resistance of dynamic crosslinked polyurethanes and a feasible method for the industrialization of the recyclable thermoset polyurethane elastomers.

Abstract:Footwear, carpet, automotive interiors, and multilayer packaging are examples of products manufactured from several types of polymers whose inextricability poses substantial challenges for recycling at the end of life. Here, we show that chemical circularity in mixed-polymer recycling becomes possible by controlling the rates of depolymerization of polydiketoenamines (PDK) over several orders of magnitude through molecular engineering. Stepwise deconstruction of mixed-PDK composites, laminates, and assemblies is chemospecific, allowing a prescribed subset of monomers, fillers, and additives to be recovered under pristine condition at each stage of the recycling process. We provide a theoretical framework to understand PDK depolymerization via acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and experimentally validate trends predicted for the rate-limiting step. The control achieved by PDK resins in managing chemical and material entropy points to wide-ranging opportunities for pairing circular design with sustainable manufacturing.

Abstract:Reinforcement, recycling, and functional applications are three important issues in elastomer science and engineering. It is of great importance, but rarely achievable, to integrate these properties into elastomers. Herein, we report a simple way to prepare covalently cross-linked yet recyclable, robust, and macroscopically responsive elastomer vitrimers by engineering exchangeable bonds into rubber–carbon nanodot (CD) interphase using CD as high-functionality cross-linker. The cross-linked rubbers can rearrange the network topology through transesterification reactions in the interphase, conferring the materials the ability to be recycled, reshaped, and welded. The relatively short chains bridging adjacent CD are highly stretched and preferentially rupture to dissipate energy under external force, resulting in remarkable improvements on the mechanical properties. Moreover, the malleable and welding properties allow the samples to access reconfigurable/multiple shape memory effects.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymers (DCPs) have attracted extensive attention as they integrate the advantages of thermoset and thermoplastic resins. However, the heat resistance was compromised due to the unstable features of dynamic covalent bonds. Therefore, it is still a challenge to develop DCPs possessing excellent heat resistance and recycling properties at the same time. Moreover, production and employment of biomass-derived chemicals have become increasingly urgent due to the petroleum shortage and environmental problems. Herein, a biomass-sourced azine chain extender was synthesized from biomass platform compound, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Small-molecule model furan azine compounds were synthesized to investigate the exchange mechanism at a high temperature. A series of azine polyurethane elastomers were prepared, containing different ratios of furan azine chain extenders. The synthesized furan azine polyurethane elastomers (FAPUEs-3) exhibited excellent mechanical properties compared with the control sample (FAPUEs-3CS), probably owing to the rigidity and polarity of furan rings. The obtained FAPUEs also showed excellent creep resistance at high temperatures by virtue of high exchange temperatures of furan azine moieties. The FAPUEs can be easily degraded under acidic conditions in acetone. The recovery rate of tensile strength could be still above 90% after 3 recycles at 150 °C under a pressure of 10 MPa. FAPUEs also showed excellent antibacterial effects against E. coli and S. aureus as azine moieties are a special kind of Schiff base. The FAPUEs opened an avenue for developing biomass-sourced recyclable PUEs.

Abstract:Vibrations with various frequencies in daily life and industry can cause health hazards and fatigue failure of critical structures, which requires the development of elastomers with high energy dissipation at desired frequencies. Current strategies relying on tuning characteristic relaxation time of polymer chains are mostly qualitative empirical methods, and it is difficult to precisely control damping performances. Here, we report a general strategy for constructing dynamic crosslinked polymer fluid gels that provide controllable ultrahigh energy dissipation. This is realized by dynamic-bond-mediated chain reptation of polymer fluids in a crosslinked network, where the characteristic time of chain reptation is dominated by the presence of well-defined dissociation time of dynamic bonds and almost independent of their molar mass. Using prototypical supramolecular polydimethylsiloxane elastomers, we demonstrate that dynamic crosslinked polymer fluid gels exhibit a controllable ultrahigh damping performance at desired frequencies (10^-2 ~ 10^2 Hz), exceeding that of typical state-of-the-art silicone damping materials. Their shock absorption is over 300% higher than that of commercial silicone rubber under the same impact force.

Engineering of Chain Rigidity and Hydrogen Bond Cross-Linking toward Ultra-Strong, Healable, Recyclable, and Water-Resistant Elastomers

Abstract:High-performance elastomers have gained significant interest because of their wide applications in industry and our daily life. However, it remains a great challenge to fabricate elastomers simultaneously integrating ultra-high mechanical strength, toughness, and excellent healing and recycling capacities. In this study, ultra-strong, healable, and recyclable elastomers are fabricated by dynamically cross-linking copolymers composed of rigid polyimide (PI) segments and soft poly(urea-urethane) (PUU) segments with hydrogen bonds. The elastomers, which are denoted as PIPUU, have a record-high tensile strength of ≈142 MPa and an extremely high toughness of ≈527 MJ m-3 . The structure of the PIPUU elastomer contains hydrogen-bond-cross-linked elastic matrix and homogenously dispersed rigid nanostructures. The rigid PI segments self-assemble to generate phase-separated nanostructures that serve as nanofillers to significantly strengthen the elastomers. Meanwhile, the elastic matrix is composed of soft PUU segments cross-linked with reversible hydrogen bonds, which largely enhance the strength and toughness of the elastomer. The dynamically cross-linked PIPUU elastomers can be healed and recycled to restore their original mechanical strength. Moreover, because of the excellent mechanical performance and the hydrophobic PI segments, the PIPUU elastomers are scratch-, puncture-, and water-resistant.
Dynamically Cross-Linked Polyolefin Elastomers with Highly Improved Mechanical and Thermal Performance

Abstract:The controllable introduction of dynamical chemical cross-linking into polymers permits the development of recyclable polymer products with high performance. However, challenges lie in chemically inert polyolefins, which are the largest polymer product in the world to date. Here, we demonstrate the preparation of polyolefin elastomers (POEs) with tunable dynamic chemical cross-linking, compatible with their industrial production. Boronic ester bond cross-linked POEs (BPOEs) present high mechanical performances with tensile strength (σ) up to 23.8 MPa, Young’s modulus (E) up to 29.0 MPa, and toughness (U T) up to 69.6 MJ·m–3, far superior to those reported elastomers. BPOEs also demonstrate good thermal stability maintaining a steady storage modulus plateau of 2.9 MPa above 100 °C, instead of 0.2 MPa for pristine POEs. After reprocessing three times, BPOEs show a good reprocessability with a σ recovery of 85.6%, an E of 108.5%, a U T of 95.7%, and an elongation at break (ε) of 97.1%, even higher than that of commercial POEs such as POE-8150 of Dow Company. Our method thus permits the future development of higher-performance POEs and other polyolefins with good reprocessability and recyclability.

Abstract:Circular plastics thrive on the ability to chemically recycle polymers into reusable monomers, ideally closing the loop from manufacturing to end of life. Mechanisms for heterogeneous polymer deconstruction are complex, involving diffusion and transport of reagents to reactive sites in a material continuously undergoing chemical transformations. A deeper understanding of deconstruction phenomena would better inform the molecular basis of circularity in plastics. Here, we show how nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, relaxometry, and diffusometry enable monitoring of heterogeneous deconstruction of a model elastomer with acid-cleavable diketoenamine bonds. In chaotropic aqueous HBr, polydiketoenamine (PDK) deconstruction is fast, enabled by macro- and micro-scale swelling in early stages, which facilitates acid penetration and protonation of reaction sites deep within the polymer sample. We observe a previously unrecognized hydrogen-bond stabilized protonated amine intermediate that is persistent throughout deconstruction, and found a strong correlation of its reactivity with swelling and chain kinetics. In kosmotropic aqueous H2SO4, PDK deconstruction is notably slower. Swelling occurred at a more gradual pace, creating a porous polymer matrix, yet polymer chain mobility remained low. Most notably, the kosmotropic character of aqueous H2SO4 resulted in a reaction site that was comparably less active in advancing hydrolysis and deconstruction to shorter oligomer chains, instead trapping acid in matrix pores and modifying the activity of the reaction medium under confinement in the process.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method to prepare an external stress free two-way shape memory polymer. The core advance lies in the introduction of alkoxyamine moieties into the main chains of crystalline polycaprolactone (PCL) based crosslinked polyurethanes (PUs). By using the synchronous bond fission/radical recombination habit of C–ON bonds in alkoxyamine in a controlled manner, the stretched PU network undergoes uneven partial stress relaxation depending on the triggering status of C–ON bonds in the specific sites. Accordingly, the greatly relaxed portions tend to maintain the extended status, while the nearly unrelaxed portions tend to recover to their original undeformed shape. These two opposite tendencies successfully create an internal tensional force, which cooperates with the bidirectional deformation induced by melting/recrystallization of the crystalline phase and leads to two-way shape memory effect. Additionally, the dynamic reversibility of C–ON bonds further enables interrelated reprogramming, intrinsic self-healing of wider crack and recycling of the crosslinked PU. Such a diversity of smart stimuli-responsive properties is not available in the case of irreversible polymers.

Abstract:Enhancing the mechanical properties of vibration-damping elastomers with dynamic bonds is crucial for practical applications. Herein, we synthesize recyclable damping elastomers with superior mechanical strength through the incorporation of triple dynamic bonds. Firstly, linear polymers with carboxyl and imidazole groups are fabricated by random copolymerization, which consist of dual dynamic bonds (hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds). Then, 1,4-phenylenediboronic acid is introduced by solution blending and can form boron/nitrogen coordination bonds with imidazole groups, thereby converting dual dynamic bonds into triple dynamic bonds. Therefore, the resulting elastomer exhibits remarkable tensile strength of 16.29 MPa, toughness of 73.53 MJ/m3, and damping properties (maintaining tan δ > 0.3 over a temperature range of 75 °C). Furthermore, owning to the triple dynamic bonds, the elastomer retains exceptional mechanical and vibration-damping properties even after three times of recycling. This work provides a simple strategy to fabricate recyclable elastomers with high mechanical performance and vibration-damping property, which have promising and sustainable potential for practical damping applications.

Abstract:Dynamic cross-linked polymers (DCPs) are supposed to possess favorable reprocessability and degradability as well as excellent thermal and mechanical properties. However, achieving rapid reprocessing and high performance for DCPs is still a formidable challenge. Herein, a strategy of using synergistic catalysis effect between different kinds of dynamic bonds (imine bond, disulfide bond and multiple hydrogen bond) to accelerate the dynamic exchange reactions was proposed and verified through small-molecule model reactions and DFT simulation computation, and it was applied to prepare high-performance and rapidly reprocessable DCPs. In addition, the viscosity of the DCPs decreased with raising shear rate in virtue of the dissociation of dynamic bonds in the network, as a result, which made this material promising for preparing polyurethane composites through resin film infusion (RFI). Furthermore, the RFI process was stimulated and confirmed by Moldex 3D. This work revealed the dynamic exchange accelerating mechanism for multiple dynamic systems and provide a strategy to produce DCPs combining high performance and excellent reprocessability.

Abstract:The reprocessable and chemically recyclable cross‐linked elastomers were prepared via a tandem ring‐opening polymerization and photo‐crosslinking strategy from bio‐renewable β‐methyl‐δ‐valerolactone and thioctic acid. Due to the lack of effective physical reprocessing or chemical recovery capabilities, thermosetting polymers face long‐term post‐disposing problems. The introduction of dynamic covalent bonds can effectively combine reprocessing ability with typical robust properties of thermosetting polymer. However, after multiple reprocessing treatments, thermosets often suffer significant decrease in mechanical properties, so the chemical recycling and reuse is crucial and necessary for the sustainable development of thermosetting polymers. Herein, a series of polyesters PβMδVL‐TA with mono‐ or bis‐terminal cyclic disulfide bond was first synthesized via esterification between terminal hydroxyl of PβMδVL and carboxyl of thioctic acid (TA). Then, the thermosetting elastomer with both physical reprocessability and chemical recyclability was prepared by simple UV‐triggered ring‐opening polymerization of cyclic disulfide. By regulating cross‐linking sites and the molecular weight of the mono‐ or bis‐PβMδVL‐TA, such polyester elastomers exhibit good tensile strength and elasticity with elastic recovery can reach 98% after 10 cycles. Furthermore, the dynamic reaction of disulfide bonds induced by hot pressing and UV light enables multiple reprocessing of cross‐linked elastomers. Remarkably, the efficient chemical recycling of the elastomers was achieved to recover pristine βMδVL monomer with 90% yield in the presence of ZnCl2 as the catalyst at 130°C.
