Abstract:Rational bottom-up construction of two-dimensional (2D) covalent or noncovalent organic materials with precise structural control at the atomic or molecular level remains a challenge. The design and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on new building blocks is of great significance in achieving new types of 2D monolayer MOF films. Here, we demonstrate that a complexation between copper(II) ions and tri(β-diketone) ligands yields a novel 2D MOF structure, either in the form of a powder or as a monolayer film. It has been characterized by Fourier transform infrared, Raman, ultraviolet-visible, X-ray photoelectron, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. Selected area electron diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction results show that the MOF is crystalline and has a hexagonal structure. A MOF-based membrane has been prepared by vacuum filtration of an aqueous dispersion of the MOF powder onto a porous Anodisc filter having pore size 0.02 μm. The porous MOF membrane filters gold nanoparticles with a cutoff of ∼2.4 nm.

Abstract:Pore engineering plays a significant role in the applications of porous materials, especially in the area of separation and catalysis. Here, we demonstrated a metal-organic framework (MOF) solid solution (MOSS) strategy to homogeneously and controllably mix NU-1000 and NU-901 structures inside single MOF nanocrystals. The key for the homogeneous mixing and forming of MOSS was the bidentate modulator, which was designed to have a slightly longer distance between two carboxylate groups than the original tetratopic ligand. All of the MOSS nanocrystals showed a uniform pore size distribution with a well-tuned ratio of mesopores to micropores. Because of the appropriate pore ratio, MOSS nanocrystals can balance the thermodynamic interactions and kinetic diffusion of the substrates, thus showing exceedingly higher separation abilities and a unique elution sequence. Our work proposes a rational strategy to design mixed-porous MOFs with controlled pore ratios and provides a new direction to design homogeneously mixed MOFs with a high separation ability and unique separation selectivity.

Abstract:The development of simple, versatile strategies for the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived membranes are of increasing scientific interest, but challenges exist in understanding suitable fabrication mechanisms. Here we report a route for the complete transformation of a series of MOF membranes and particles, based on multivalent cation substitution. Through our approach, the effective pore size can be reduced through the immobilization of metal salt residues in the cavities, and appropriate MOF crystal facets can be exposed, to achieve competitive molecular sieving capabilities. The method can also be used more generally for the synthesis of a variety of MOF membranes and particles. Importantly, we design and synthesize promising MOF membranes candidates that are hard to achieve through conventional methods. For example, our CuBTC/MIL-100 membrane exhibits 89, 171, 241 and 336 times higher H2 permeance than that of CO2, O2, N2 and CH4, respectively.

Abstract:Developing new strategies to enhance adsorbents' gas separation performance is highly desirable. In this contribution, we created a post-synthetic modification approach to enhance the C2H2/CO2 separation performance for an ultramicroporous MOF (NKMOF-2) platform that underwent a single-crystal-to-single-crystal in the counter anion exchange process. Substitution of Cl- with BF4- not only greatly improved the water stability of the NKMOF-2 platform but also enhanced their adsorption capacity and separation performance. Mixture gas breakthrough experiments revealed that the anion exchange strategy was a powerful approach for boosting the selective adsorption of C2H2 over CO2. Moreover, we first observed that the C2H2/CO2 separation performance could be enhanced dramatically by elevating the test temperature. This study not only enriches the toolbox to create efficient MOF adsorbents for gas separation but also provides a fundamental understanding of the enhanced gas uptake and separation performance.

Abstract:Modulating the crystal morphology, or the exposed crystal facets, of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) expands their potential applications in catalysis, adsorption, and separation. In this article, by immobilizing the citrate modulators on Au nanoparticles and subsequently being fixed on solid copper hydroxide nanostrands, a well-intergrown and oriented HKUST-1 cube crystal membrane was formed at room temperature. In contrast, in the absence of Au nanoparticles, well-intergrown and oriented cuboctahedron and octahedron membranes were formed in water/ethanol and ethanol, respectively. The gas separation performances of these HKUST-1 membranes were tuned via their exposed facets with defined pore sizes. The HKUST-1 cube membrane with exposed {001} facets demonstrated the highest permeance but lowest gas binary separation factors, while the octahedron membrane with exposed {111} facets presented the highest separation factors but lowest permeance, since the window size of {111} facets is 0.46 nm which is smaller than 0.9 nm of {001} facets. Separation of 0.38 nm CO2 from 0.55 nm SF6 was realized by the HKUST-1 octahedron membrane. As a proof of concept, this will open a new way to design MOF-related separation membranes by facet controlling.

Abstract:Polycrystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) layers hold great promise as molecular sieve membranes for efficient gas separation. Nevertheless, the high crystallinity tends to cause inter-crystalline defects/cracks in the nearby crystals, which makes crystalline porous materials face a great challenge in the fabrication of defect-free membranes. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate the balance between crystallinity and film formation of MOF membrane through a facile in situ modulation strategy. Monocarboxylic acid was introduced as a modulator to regulate the crystallinity via competitive complexation and thus concomitantly control the film-forming state during membrane growth. Through adjusting the ratio of modulator acid/linker acid, an appropriate balance between this structural "trade-off" was achieved. The resulting MOF membrane with moderate crystallinity and coherent morphology exhibits molecular sieving for H2 /CO2 separation with selectivity up to 82.5.

Abstract:The fine-tuning of the pore structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is of critical importance to developing energy-efficient processes for the challenging separation of structurally similar molecules. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to realize a quasi-three-dimensional refinement of the pore structure that utilizes the tunability of ring size and number in polycycloalkane-dicarboxylate ligands. Two hydrolytically stable MOFs with a confined aliphatic pore environment, ZUL-C1 and ZUL-C2, were, for the first time, synthesized and applied in separating low-concentration C2-C3 hydrocarbons from natural gas and ultralow-concentration Xe from used nuclear fuel (UNF) off-gas. Validated by X-ray diffraction and modeling, an expansion of the polycycloalkane moiety enables sub-angstrom contraction in specific directions and forms a pore surface with more alkyl sites, which affords stronger trapping of guest molecules with relatively higher polarizability. The resultant material exhibits record C2H(6)/CH4 and C3H8/CH4 selectivities coupled with a benchmark low-pressure C2H6 capacity in alkane mixture separation and also a benchmark Xe capacity at extremely diluted feed concentration and record Kr productivity for the Xe/Kr (20:80, v/v) mixture in Xe/Kr separation.

Abstract:Separation is an important industrial step with critical roles in the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and nuclear industries, as well as in many other fields. Although much progress has been made, the development of better separation technologies, especially through the discovery of high-performance separation materials, continues to attract increasing interest due to concerns over factors such as efficiency, health and environmental impacts, and the cost of existing methods. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a rapidly expanding family of crystalline porous materials, have shown great promise to address various separation challenges due to their well-defined pore size and unprecedented tunability in both composition and pore geometry. In the past decade, extensive research is performed on applications of MOF materials, including separation and capture of many gases and vapors, and liquid-phase separation involving both liquid mixtures and solutions. MOFs also bring new opportunities in enantioselective separation and are amenable to morphological control such as fabrication of membranes for enhanced separation outcomes. Here, some of the latest progress in the applications of MOFs for several key separation issues, with emphasis on newly synthesized MOF materials and the impact of their compositional and structural features on separation properties, are reviewed and highlighted.

Abstract:We have successfully designed and synthesized a new tetracarboxylic linker, which constructed its first three-dimensional microporous metal-organic framework (MOF), [Cu-2(DDPD)(H2O)(2)]center dot Gx (ZJU-13, H4DDPD=5,5'-(2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene-1,5-diyl)diisophthalic acid, ZJU=Zhejiang University, G = guest molecules) via solvothermal reaction. Due to open Cu2+ sites and optimized pore size, the activated ZJU-13a displays high separation selectivity for C2H2/CH4 of 74 and C2H2/CO2 of 12.5 at low pressure by using Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) simulation at room temperature.

Abstract:Separation is one of the most energy-intensive processes in the chemical industry, and membrane-based separation technology helps to reduce the energy consumption dramatically. Supported metal-organic framework (MOF) layers hold great promise as a molecular sieve membrane, yet only a few MOF membranes showed the expected separation performance. The main reasons include e.g. nonselective grain boundary transport or the flexible MOF framework, especially the inevitable linker rotation. Here, we propose a crystal engineering strategy that balances the grain boundary structure and framework flexibility in Co-Zn bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes and exploit their contributions to the improvement of membrane quality and separation performance. It reveals that a good balance between the two trade-off factors enabled a "sweet spot" that offers the best C3H6/C3H8 separation factor up to 200.

Abstract:The synthesis of stable bicontinuous hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is described. Two functional block co-oligomer templates were used independently, i.e. poly(styrene)-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) and poly(styrene)-block-poly(acrylic acid). Two prototypical MOFs, ZIF-8 and HKUST-1, were selected to demonstrate our approach. The resulting materials resemble the microstructures of bicontinuous silica aerogels. They exhibit interconnected porosities throughout the micro-, meso- and macro-porous regions, as shown by electron microscopy and pore size distribution analyses.

Abstract:For Xe/Kr adsorption-based separation, the current process was focused on cryogenic distillation, which is energy intensive. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as an alternative solid state adsorbents, is highly interesting. Here, we reported a new robust MOF (ECUT-51) with two different sizes of pores (pore A and pore B). The excellent Xe/Kr separation ability was attested by dynamic breakthrough experiments. A deep insight into the separation mechanism was further obtained via Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation. The theoretical calculations unveiled that both Xe and Kr can be accommodated in pore A, while Kr was prohibitive in pore B.

Abstract:Membrane separation is very promising in solving energy and environmental challenges of separation process, and it has developed rapidly in recent decades. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new type of microporous material with adjustable pores with uniform size, thus MOF membranes show promising potential for separation applications. With the rapid development of two-dimensional (2D) materials, 2D MOF membranes constructed with 2D MOF nanosheets, have attracted increasing attentions, where the pores of MOF could achieve molecular sieving, while both the nanochannels between the nanosheets and the pores of MOF nanosheets would provide mass transfer pathway for fast permeation. Therefore, 2D MOF membranes are expected to show both high permeability and selectivity, which might become a kind of high-performance membrane for industrial separations.

Abstract:Efficient gas separation and purification play a vital role in the current advanced development of industry, and the application of MOF adsorbents in this area with highly technical materials shows obvious advantages. On the basis of reticular chemistry, the 4-c lvt MOF adsorbent [CuDTTA]·3DMF·CH3CN has been constructed (CuDTTA; H2DTTA = 2,5-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)terephthalic acid). CuDTTA reveals a multiple-micropore system and high-density active sites decorated on the channel surfaces, which are conducive to its extraordinary selectivity of CO2/CH4 and C2H2/CH4 (29 and 166, 1:1). In combination with an analysis of Qst values, CuDTTA possesses the synergistic effect of size sieving and abundant functional sites, significantly improving the gas adsorption and separation performance. Meanwhile, the results also reveal that functional sites have a stronger binding affinity toward C2H2 with respect to CO2.
