Abstract:The separation of C2H2/CO2 is an important process in industry but challenged by the trade-off of capacity and selectivity owning to their close physical properties and identical kinetic molecular size. Herein, we reported a new metal organic framework ZNU-3 (ZNU = Zhejiang Normal University) with flexibility controlled by abundant hydrogen-bonds for highly selective molecular sieving of C2H2 from CO2, CH4, C2H4 and C2H6 using commercially available cost-effective ligands. At 1.0 bar and 298 K, the uptake capacity of C2H2 is 81.0 cm(3) (STP) g(-1), while the CO2, C2H4, C2H6, CH4, N-2 uptake capacities are only 5.4, 5.3, 1.0, 1.1, 1.1 cm(3) (STP) respectively. Such high uptake ratios of C2H2 over other C2 and C1 gases have rarely been achieved. Particularly, the C2H2/CO2 uptake ratio of 14.9 is only secondary to that of the benchmark UTSA-300a and much higher than those of all other porous materials. Dynamic breakthrough experiments with equimolar C2H2/CO2 mixtures showed that the retaining time of C2H2 is nearly 2 fold of that of CO2, indicating the excellent practical separation performance of ZNU-3 for C2H2/CO2 mixtures. Modeling studies indicated that C2H2 is mainly trapped by two opposite carboxylic groups with additional small contribution from pi center dot center dot center dot pi packing between pyridine ring and planar C C moiety.
Fine pore engineering in a series of isoreticular metal-organic frameworks for efficient C2H2/CO2 separation

Abstract:Abstract The separation of C 2 H 2 /CO 2 is not only industrially important for acetylene purification but also scientifically challenging owing to their high similarities in physical properties and molecular sizes. Ultramicroporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can exhibit a pore confinement effect to differentiate gas molecules of similar size. Herein, we report the fine-tuning of pore sizes in sub-nanometer scale on a series of isoreticular MOFs that can realize highly efficient C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation. The subtle structural differences lead to remarkable adsorption performances enhancement. Among four MOF analogs, by integrating appropriate pore size and specific binding sites, [Cu(dps) 2 (SiF 6 )] (SIFSIX-dps-Cu, SIFSIX = SiF 6 2- , dps = 4.4’-dipyridylsulfide, also termed as NCU-100) exhibits the highest C 2 H 2 uptake capacity and C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity. At room temperature, the pore space of SIFSIX-dps-Cu significantly inhibits CO 2 molecules but takes up a large amount of C 2 H 2 (4.57 mmol g −1 ), resulting in a high IAST selectivity of 1787 for C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation. The multiple host-guest interactions for C 2 H 2 in both inter- and intralayer cavities are further revealed by dispersion-corrected density functional theory and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Dynamic breakthrough experiments show a clean C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation with a high C 2 H 2 working capacity of 2.48 mmol g −1 .

Abstract:Acetylene (C2H2) and ethylene (C2H4) both are important chemical raw materials and energy fuel gasses. But the effective removement of trace C2H2 from C2H4 and the purification of C2H2 from carbon dioxide (CO2) are particularly challenging in the petrochemical industry. As a class of porous physical adsorbent, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited great success in separation and purification of light hydrocarbon gas. Herein, we rationally designed four novel MOFs by the strategy of pore space partition (PSP) via introducing triangular tri(pyridin-4-yl)-amine (TPA) into the 1D hexagonal channels of acs-type parent skeleton. By modulating the functional groups of linear dicarboxylate linkers for the parent skeleton, a series of isoreticular PSP-MOFs (SNNU-278−281) were successfully obtained. The synergistic effects of suitable pore size and Lewis basic functional groups make these MOFs ideal C2H2 adsorbents. The gas adsorption experimental results show that all MOFs have excellent C2H2 uptakes. Specially, SNNU-278 demonstrates a high C2H2 uptake of 149.7 cm3/g at 273 K and 1 atm. Meanwhile, SNNU-278−281 MOFs also show extremely great C2H2 separation from CO2 and C2H4. The optimized SNNU-281 with high-density hydroxy groups exhibits extraordinary C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 dynamic breakthrough interval times up to 31 min/g and 17 min/g under 298 K and 1 bar.

Abstract:Research on hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) has been developed for quite a long time; however, those with both established permanent porosities and functional properties are extremely rare due to weak hydrogen-bonding interactions among molecular organic linkers, which are much more fragile and difficult to stabilize. Herein, through judiciously combining the superiority of both the moderately stable coordination bonds in metal-organic frameworks and hydrogen bonds, we have realized a microporous hydrogen-bonded metal-complex or metallotecton framework HOF-21, which not only shows permanent porosity, but also exhibits highly selective separation performance of C2H2/C2H4 at room temperature. The outstanding separation performance can be ascribed to sieving effect confined by the fine-tuning pores and the superimposed hydrogen-bonding interaction between C2H2 and SiF62- on both ends as validated by both modeling and neutron powder diffraction experiments. More importantly, the collapsed HOF-21 can be restored by simply immersing it into water or salt solution. To the best of our knowledge, such extraordinary water stability and restorability of HOF-21 were observed for the first time in HOFs, underlying the bright perspective of such new HOF materials for their industrial usage.
Customizing Pore System in a Microporous Metal–Organic Framework for Efficient C2H2 Separation from CO2 and C2H4

Abstract:Selective-adsorption separation is an energy-efficient technology for the capture of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethylene (C2H4). However, it remains a critical challenge to effectively recognize C2H2 among CO2 and C2H4, owing to their analogous molecule sizes and physical properties. Herein, we report a new microporous metal–organic framework (NUM-14) possessing a carefully tailored pore system containing moderate pore size and nitro-functionalized channel surface for efficient separation of C2H2 from CO2 and C2H4. The activated NUM-14 (namely NUM-14a) exhibits sufficient pore space to acquire excellent C2H2 loading capacity (4.44 mmol g−1) under ambient conditions. In addition, it possesses dense nitro groups, acting as hydrogen bond acceptors, to selectively identify C2H2 molecules rather than CO2 and C2H4. The breakthrough experiments demonstrate the good actual separation ability of NUM-14a for C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 mixtures. Furthermore, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the pore surface of the NUM-14a has a stronger affinity to preferentially bind C2H2 over CO2 and C2H4 via stronger C-H···O hydrogen bond interactions. This article provides some insights into customizing pore systems with desirable pore sizes and modifying groups in terms of MOF materials toward the capture of C2H2 from CO2 and C2H4 to promote the development of more MOF materials with excellent properties for gas adsorption and separation.

Abstract:The fine-tuning of the pore structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is of critical importance to developing energy-efficient processes for the challenging separation of structurally similar molecules. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to realize a quasi-three-dimensional refinement of the pore structure that utilizes the tunability of ring size and number in polycycloalkane-dicarboxylate ligands. Two hydrolytically stable MOFs with a confined aliphatic pore environment, ZUL-C1 and ZUL-C2, were, for the first time, synthesized and applied in separating low-concentration C2-C3 hydrocarbons from natural gas and ultralow-concentration Xe from used nuclear fuel (UNF) off-gas. Validated by X-ray diffraction and modeling, an expansion of the polycycloalkane moiety enables sub-angstrom contraction in specific directions and forms a pore surface with more alkyl sites, which affords stronger trapping of guest molecules with relatively higher polarizability. The resultant material exhibits record C2H(6)/CH4 and C3H8/CH4 selectivities coupled with a benchmark low-pressure C2H6 capacity in alkane mixture separation and also a benchmark Xe capacity at extremely diluted feed concentration and record Kr productivity for the Xe/Kr (20:80, v/v) mixture in Xe/Kr separation.

Abstract:Abstract Metal-organic frameworks are widely considered for the separation of chemical mixtures due to their adjustable physical and chemical properties. However, while much effort is currently devoted to developing new adsorbents for a given separation, an ideal scenario would involve a single adsorbent for multiple separations. Porous materials exhibiting framework flexibility offer unique opportunities to tune these properties since the pore size and shape can be controlled by the application of external stimuli. Here, we establish a proof-of-concept for the molecular sieving separation of species with similar sizes (CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 ), via precise mechanical control of the pore size aperture in a flexible metal-organic framework. Besides its infinite selectivity for the considered gas mixtures, this material shows excellent regeneration capability when releasing the external mechanical constraint. This strategy, combining an external stimulus applied to a structurally compliant adsorbent, offers a promising avenue for addressing some of the most challenging gas separations.

Abstract:Microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are comparatively new porous materials. Because the pores within such MOFs can be readily tuned through the interplay of both metal-containing clusters and organic linkers to induce their size-selective sieving effects, while the pore surfaces can be straightforwardly functionalized to enforce their different interactions with gas molecules, MOF materials are very promising for gas separation. Furthermore, the high porosities of such materials can enable microporous MOFs with optimized gas separation selectivity and capacity to be targeted. This Focus Review highlights recent significant advances in microporous MOFs for gas separation.

Abstract:Adsorptive separation of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) promises a practical way to produce high-purity C2H2 required for industrial applications. However, challenges exist in the pore environment engineering of porous materials to recognize two molecules due to their similar molecular sizes and physical properties. Herein, we report a strategy to optimize pore environments of multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient C2H2/CO2 separation by tuning metal components, functionalized linkers, and terminal ligands. The optimized material UPC-200(Al)-F-BIM, constructed from Al3+ clusters, fluorine-functionalized organic linkers, and benzimidazole terminal ligands, demonstrated the highest separation efficiency (C2H2/CO2 uptake ratio of 2.6) and highest C2H2 productivity among UPC-200 systems. Experimental and computational studies revealed the contribution of small pore size and polar functional groups on the C2H2/CO2 selectivity and indicated the practical C2H2/CO2 separation of UPC-200(Al)-F-BIM.

Abstract:Adsorbents-based gas separation technologies are regarded as the potential energy-efficient alternatives towards current thermal-driven methods, and the study on multi-component gas separation is essential to deepen our understanding of the adsorbents for practical use. Relative to the ideal two-component mixtures, both the adsorption behavior and separation mechanisms are obviously more complex in multiple gas mixtures due to their close or even overlapped sizes and properties. The emergence of metal-organic frameworks with controllable pore size and pore chemistry provides the platform for the tailor-made pore structure to satisfy the harsh requirements of multi-component gas separation. This minireview highlights the recent advance of multi-component gas separation using metal-organic frameworks, including multiple impurities removal and selective molecular capture. Combining with the typical cases of hydrocarbon separations (C2, C4, and C8), the detailed discussion about the developed strategies (e.g. self-adaptive binding sites, multiple binding spaces, synergistic binding sites, synergistic sorbent separation technology, gate-opening effect, size and thermodynamic combine effect) that are adaptive to different scenarios would be provided. The review will conclude with our perspective on the existing barriers and the future direction of this topic.

Abstract:The high-efficiency separation of C2H2/CO2 has important research significance and industrial value. The currently reported metal–organic framework (MOF) adsorbents for the separation of C2H2/CO2 are generally based on unsaturated metal sites, strong hydrogen bonds or strong electrostatic interaction sites, which suffer from difficulties in combining selectivity and capacity. Significant efforts have been devoted to solving this trade-off effect, and considerable achievements have been made. Herein, we review the research progress of MOFs for C2H2/CO2 separation in the past few years according to the properties of the material structure, and prospect the future research directions.

Abstract:Developing porous solid adsorbents with strong interactions toward C2H2 is crucial to achieve C2H2/CO2 separation with high selectivity. Herein, we introduce the concept of "divided linkers" for the construction of metal- organic frameworks (MOFs) with tailored pores and well -positioned adsorption sites. A single CuI node divides the pyrazyl-carboxylate linker 4,4 '-(2,6-pyrazinediyl)dibenzoic acid into two equivalent edges. Furthermore, these edges reticulate with the pseudo-octahedral Zn-based building units to afford a porous multinary framework with single crystallinity and impressive chemical stability. Its appropriate pore size (6.4 angstrom) and high density of interacting sites empower the MOF with high capacity in C2H2 adsorption (104 cm3 g-1) and preferential C2H2 capture over CO2 (selectivity = 3.3) at 298 K. Potential use of the robust architecture for C2H2/CO2 separation is confirmed by the dynamic gas mixture breakthrough experiment.
Engineering Supramolecular Binding Sites in a Chemically Stable Metal‐Organic Framework for Simultaneous High C2H2Storage and Separation

Abstract:AbstractDeveloping porous materials to overcome the trade‐off between adsorption capacity and selectivity for C2H2/CO2separation remains a challenge. Herein, we report a stable HKUST‐1‐like MOF (ZJU‐50a), featuring large cages decorated with high density of supramolecular binding sites to achieve both high C2H2storage and selectivity. ZJU‐50a exhibits one of the highest C2H2storage capacity (192 cm3 g−1) and concurrently high C2H2/CO2selectivity (12) at 298 K and 1 bar. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction studies on gas‐loaded ZJU‐50a crystal unveil that the incorporated supramolecular binding sites can selectively take up C2H2molecule but not CO2to result in both high C2H2storage and selectivity. Breakthrough experiments validated its separation performance for C2H2/CO2mixtures, providing a high C2H2recovery capacity of 84.2 L kg−1with 99.5 % purity. This study suggests a novel strategy of engineering supramolecular binding sites into MOFs to overcome the trade‐off for this separation.

Abstract:Considering the significant application of acetylene (C2H2) in the manufacturing and petrochemical industries, the selective capture of impurity carbon dioxide (CO2) is a crucial task and an enduring challenge. Here, a flexible metal-organic framework (Zn-DPNA) accompanied by a conformation change of the Me2NH2+ ions in the framework is reported. The solvate-free framework provides a stepped adsorption isotherm and large hysteresis for C2H2, but type-I adsorption for CO2. Owing to their uptakes difference before gate-opening pressure, Zn-DPNA demonstrated favorable inverse CO2/C2H2 separation. According to molecular simulation, the higher adsorption enthalpy of CO2 (43.1 kJ mol(-1)) is due to strong electrostatic interactions with Me2NH2+ ions, which lock the hydrogen-bond network and narrow pores. Furthermore, the density contours and electrostatic potential verifies the middle of the cage in the large pore favors C2H2 and repels CO2, leading to the expansion of the narrow pore and further diffusion of C2H2. These results provide a new strategy that optimizes the desired dynamic behavior for one-step purification of C2H2.
Metal-Organic Framework with Space-Partition Pores by Fluorinated Anions for Benchmark C2H2/CO2 Separation

Abstract:The efficient separation of C2H2 from C2H2/CO2 or C2H2/CO2/CH4 mixtures is crucial for achieving high-purity C2H2 (>99%), essential in producing contemporary commodity chemicals. In this report, we present ZNU-12, a metal-organic framework with space-partitioned pores formed by inorganic fluorinated anions, for highly efficient C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/CO2/CH4 separation. The framework, partitioned by fluorinated SiF62- anions into three distinct cages, enables both a high C2H2 capacity (176.5 cm3/g at 298 K and 1.0 bar) and outstanding C2H2 selectivity over CO2 (13.4) and CH4 (233.5) simultaneously. Notably, we achieve a record-high C2H2 productivity (132.7, 105.9, 98.8, and 80.0 L/kg with 99.5% purity) from C2H2/CO2 (v/v = 50/50) and C2H2/CO2/CH4 (v/v = 1/1/1, 1/1/2, or 1/1/8) mixtures through a cycle of adsorption-desorption breakthrough experiments with high recovery rates. Theoretical calculations suggest the presence of potent "2 + 2" collaborative hydrogen bonds between C2H2 and two hexafluorosilicate (SiF62-) anions in the confined cavities.

Abstract:The adsorptive separation of CH4 from CO2 is a promising process for upgrading natural gas. However, thermodynamically selective adsorbents exhibit a strong affinity for CO2 and thus require a high energy compensation for regeneration. Instead, kinetic separation is preferred for a pressure swing adsorption process, although precise control of the aperture size to achieve a tremendous discrepancy in diffusion rates remains challenging. Here, we report a guest solvent-directed strategy for fine-tuning the pore size at a sub-angstrom precision to realize highly efficient kinetic separation. A series of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with isomeric pore surface chemistry were constructed from 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropyli-dene)-bis(benzoic acid) and dicopper paddlewheel notes. The resultant CuFMOF·CH3OH (CuFMOF-c) exhibits an excellent kinetic separation performance thanks to a periodically expanding and contracting aperture with the ideal bottleneck size, which enables the effective trapping of CO2 and impedes the diffusion of CH4, offering an ultrahigh kinetic selectivity (273.5) and equilibrium-kinetic combined selectivity (64.2). Molecular dynamics calculations elucidate the separation mechanism, and breakthrough experiments validate the separation performance.

Owing to their uptakes difference before gate-opening pressure, Zn-DPNA demonstrated favorable inverse CO2 /C2 H2 separation. According to molecular simulation, the higher adsorption enthalpy of CO2 (43.1 kJ mol-1 ) is due to strong electrostatic interactions with Me2 NH2 + ions, which lock the hydrogen-bond network and narrow pores. Furthermore, the density contours and electrostatic potential verifies the middle of the cage in the large pore favors C2 H2 and repels CO2 , leading to the expansion of the narrow pore and further diffusion of C2 H2 . These results provide a new strategy that optimizes the desired dynamic behavior for one-step purification of C2 H2 .
Efficient C2H2/CO2 separation in two 2-fold interpenetrating metal-organic frameworks with ultrahigh C2H2 packing density

Abstract:Adsorptive separation of C2H2/CO2 is industrially important and feasible but the design of highly efficient adsorbents remains very challenging owing to the almost identical physicochemical properties of the two gases. Herein, we constructed two new microporous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), termed CTGU-39/40 (CTGU = China Three Gorges University), with 2-fold interpenetrating frameworks and unique pore geometry/chemistry for C2H2/CO2 separation. Both the activated MOFs (CTGU-39/40-a) can preferentially adsorb C2H2 over CO2 with excellent selectivity of 8.4 and 3.3 at 298 K and 100 kPa, respectively, as verified by static adsorption measurements. More importantly, attributed to the suitable pore aperture size (∼5 Å) and abundant adsorption sites, CTGU-39-a combines exceptionally high packing density of C2H2 (0.41 g mL−1) and moderate isosteric heat of adsorption (Q st) for C2H2 (26.8 kJ mol−1), outperforming most previously reported adsorbents. Theoretical calculations reveal that the preferential adsorption of C2H2 within two MOFs is driven by cooperative adsorption behavior through multiple H-bonding and Coulomb interactions. Experimental breakthrough results further confirmed their practical separation ability and recyclability toward an equimolar C2H2/CO2 mixture at different feeding rates. This work may offer new insights into the design of advanced porous materials for C2H2 purification and potentially other gas separations.

Abstract:A new organic ligand of 1,1′-biphenyl-containing tetra-carboxylic acid (H4BPTT) and its first metal-organic framework [Zn2(BPTT)(H2O)2]n·(DMF)4.5n (1) was designed, synthesized and structurally characterized exhibiting two-dimensional distorted (4,4) topology. The activated 1a exhibits permanent porosity and moderately high selectivities for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 gas separations at room temperature.
