Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.
An Extremely Stretchable and Self-Healable Supramolecular Polymer Network

Abstract:The construction of a single polymer network with extreme stretchability, relatively high mechanical strength, and fast and facile autonomous room-temperature self-healing capability still remains a challenge. Herein, supramolecular polymer networks are fabricated by synergistically incorporating metal-ligand and hydrogen bonds in poly(propylene glycol) (PPG). The representative specimen, PPG-Im-MDA-1.5-0.25-Cu, shows a combination of notable mechanical properties involving an extreme stretching ratio of 346 ± 14× and a Young's modulus of 2.10 ± 0.14 MPa, which are superior to the previously reported extremely stretchable polymeric materials. Notably, the destroyed specimen can fully recover mechanical performances within 1 h. The tunability of mechanical properties and self-healing capability has been actualized by merely tailoring the content of a chain extender. The application of the as-prepared supramolecular PPG network in constructing a flexible and self-healable conductor has been demonstrated. This strategy provides some insights for preparing extremely stretchable and self-healable polymeric materials.

Abstract:The long application life and stable performance of stretchable electronics have been putting forward requirements for both higher mechanical properties and better self‐healing ability of polymeric substrates. However, for self‐healing materials, simultaneously improving stretchability and robustness is still challenging. Here, by incorporating sliding crosslinker (polyrotaxanes) and hydrogen bonds into a polymer, a highly stretchable and self‐healable elastomer with good mechanical strength is achieved. The elastomer exhibits very high stretchability, such that it can be stretched to 2800% with a fracture strength of 1.05 MPa. Moreover, the elastomer can achieve nearly complete self‐healing (93%) at 55 °C. Next, tensile tests under different temperatures, step extension experiments, and in situ small angle X‐ray scattering confirm that the excellent stretchability is attributed to the combined effects of sliding cyclodextrins along guest chains and hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, a strain sensor by coating the single‐wall carbon nanotubes onto the surface of the elastic substrate is fabricated.

Abstract:Stretchable and autonomously self-healable elastomers with wide-ranging tunable mechanical properties have attracted increasing attention in various industries. To date, it continues to be a huge challenge to synthesize self-healing elastomers integrating extreme stretchability, relatively high mechanical modulus, and autonomous and rapid self-healing capability. Herein, we propose a novel covalent/supramolecular hybrid construction strategy, in which the covalent cross-links are responsible for providing high modulus and elasticity, while supramolecular cross-links realize extreme stretchability and rapid self-healing under room temperature depending on the ultrafast exchange kinetics of metal–ligand motifs and multicoordination modes. Abstract:It is a challenge to synthesize materials that possess the properties of biological muscles—strong, elastic and capable of self-healing. Herein we report a network of poly(dimethylsiloxane) polymer chains crosslinked by coordination complexes that combines high stretchability, high dielectric strength, autonomous self-healing and mechanical actuation. The healing process can take place at a temperature as low as −20 °C and is not significantly affected by surface ageing and moisture. The crosslinking complexes used consist of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ligands that coordinate to Fe( III ) centres through three different interactions: a strong pyridyl–iron one, and two weaker carboxamido–iron ones through both the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the carboxamide groups. As a result, the iron–ligand bonds can readily break and re-form while the iron centres still remain attached to the ligands through the stronger interaction with the pyridyl ring, which enables reversible unfolding and refolding of the chains. We hypothesize that this behaviour supports the high stretchability and self-healing capability of the material.

Abstract:A new self-healing polymer has been obtained by incorporating a cyclometalated platinum(II) complex Pt(C∧ N∧ N)Cl (C∧ N∧ N = 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridyl) into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) backbone. The molecular interactions (a combination of Pt···Pt and π-π interactions) between cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes are strong enough to crosslink the linear PDMS polymer chains into an elastic film. The as prepared polymer can be stretched to over 20 times of its original length. When damaged, the polymer can be healed at room temperature without any healants or external stimuli. Moreover, the self-healing is insensitive to surface aging. This work represents the first example where the attractive metallophilic inter-actions are utilized to design self-healing materials. Moreover, our results suggest that the stretchability and self-healing properties can be obtained simultaneously without any conflict by optimizing the strength of crosslinking interactions.

Abstract:Herein, we report a de novo chemical design of supramolecular polymer materials (SPMs-1-3) by condensation polymerization, consisting of (i) soft polymeric chains (polytetramethylene glycol and tetraethylene glycol) and (ii) strong and reversible quadruple H-bonding cross-linkers (from 0 to 30 mol %). The former contributes to the formation of the soft domain of the SPMs, and the latter furnishes the SPMs with desirable mechanical properties, thereby producing soft, stretchable, yet tough elastomers. The resulting SPM-2 was observed to be highly stretchable (up to 17 000% strain), tough (fracture energy ∼30 000 J/m2), and self-healing, which are highly desirable properties and are superior to previously reported elastomers and tough hydrogels. Furthermore, a gold, thin film electrode deposited on this SPM substrate retains its conductivity and combines high stretchability (∼400%), fracture/notch insensitivity, self-healing, and good interfacial adhesion with the gold film. Again, these properties are all highly complementary to commonly used polydimethylsiloxane-based thin film metal electrodes. Last, we proceed to demonstrate the practical utility of our fabricated electrode via both in vivo and in vitro measurements of electromyography signals. This fundamental understanding obtained from the investigation of these SPMs will facilitate the progress of intelligent soft materials and flexible electronics.

A Supramolecular Polymer Formed by Small Molecules

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are intriguing due to their thermal reversible and stimuli-responsive properties. However, most supramolecular polymers reported thus far have poor mechanical properties due to the low bonding energy of the non-covalent interactions. Here, we report a supramolecular polymer that is formed by small molecules, ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetrapropionic acid (EGTPA). Owing to the dense hydrogen bonding and low crystallinity, this material exhibits polymer-like properties—in other words, high mechanical strength and excellent plasticity. Thermal and environmental control over the dynamics of hydrogen bonding leads to many intriguing properties, such as thermal healing and tunable mechanical strength, in a way that is not accessible by traditional polymers. Based on these features, we further demonstrate its application in shape memory hybrids. Significant shape memory effect is observed, although neither of the components of the hybrids show the shape memory effect individually.
Supramolecular/Dynamic Covalent Design of High-Performance Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive from Natural Low-Molecular-Weight Compounds

Abstract:Adhesive materials have played an essential role in the history of humanity. Natural adhesives composed of low-molecular-weight monomers have been overshadowed by modern petroleum-based glues. With the development of green economy, the demand for eco-friendly materials has increased. Herein, two natural biocompatible compounds, namely thioctic acid (TA) and malic acid (MA), are selected to prepare a high-performance pressure-sensitive adhesive poly[TA-MA]. This adhesive can be quantitatively obtained via a simple mixing and heating process. Poly[TA-MA] shows interesting and useful properties, including reversible flexibility, high elongation, and good self-healing, owing to its dynamic polymerization pattern and reversible cross-linking behavior. Poly[TA-MA] exhibits excellent adhesion performance under various extreme conditions, such as at low temperatures and in hot water. High values of shear strength (3.86 MPa), peel strength (7.90 N cm-1), loop tack (10.60 N cm-1), tensile strength (1.02 MPa), and shear resistance (1628 h) demonstrate the strong adhesive effect of poly[TA-MA]. Additionally, TA can be regenerated in the monomer forms from poly[TA-MA] with high recovery rate (>90%). Meanwhile, strong anti-bacterial behavior of poly[TA-MA] is recorded. This study not only reported a new pressure-sensitive adhesive but also fully displayed the feasibility of using natural small molecules to achieve robust surface adhesion.
Intrinsically Photopolymerizable Dynamic Polymers Derived from a Natural Small Molecule

Abstract:Developing photopolymerizable polymeric materials offers many opportunities to process materials in a remote and controllable manner. However, most photopolymerizable technologies require the external introduction of photoabsorbing units, whereas designing intrinsically photopolymerizable polymers is still highly challenging. Here, we report that a natural small-molecule disulfide, thioctic acid, can be directly transformed into a poly(disulfides) network under the irradiation of visible light without any external additives. The resulting polymer network exhibits optical transparency, mechanical stretchability and toughness, ambient self-healing ability, and especially strong adhesive ability to different surfaces. The dynamic covalent backbones of the poly(disulfides) endow the depolymerization ability to recycle the material in a closed-loop manner. A Self-Healing Polymer with Fast Elastic Recovery upon Stretching

Abstract:The design of polymers that exhibit both good elasticity and self-healing properties is a highly challenging task. In spite of this, the literature reports highly stretchable self-healing polymers, but most of them exhibit slow elastic recovery behavior, i.e., they can only recover to their original length upon relaxation for a long time after stretching. Herein, a self-healing polymer with a fast elastic recovery property is demonstrated. We used 4-[tris(4-formylphenyl)methyl]benzaldehyde (TFPM) as a tetratopic linker to crosslink a poly(dimethylsiloxane) backbone, and obtained a self-healing polymer with high stretchability and fast elastic recovery upon stretching. The strain at break of the as-prepared polymer is observed at about 1400%. The polymer can immediately recover to its original length after being stretched. The damaged sample can be healed at room temperature with a healing efficiency up to 93% within 1 h. Such a polymer can be used for various applications, such as functioning as substrates or matrixes in soft actuators, electronic skins, biochips, and biosensors with prolonged lifetimes.
Toughening a Self‐Healable Supramolecular Polymer by Ionic Cluster‐Enhanced Iron‐Carboxylate Complexes

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers that can heal themselves automatically usually exhibit weakness in mechanical toughness and stretchability. Here we exploit a toughening strategy for a dynamic dry supramolecular network by introducing ionic cluster-enhanced iron-carboxylate complexes. The resulting dry supramolecular network simultaneous exhibits tough mechanical strength, high stretchability, self-healing ability, and processability at room temperature. The excellent performance of these distinct supramolecular polymers is attributed to the hierarchical existence of four types of dynamic combinations in the high-density dry network, including dynamic covalent disulfide bonds, noncovalent H-bonds, iron-carboxylate complexes and ionic clustering interactions. The extremely facile preparation method of this self-healing polymer offers prospects for high-performance low-cost material among others for coatings and wearable devices.
A photoresponsive azopyridine-based supramolecular elastomer for self-healing strain sensors

Abstract:Optical-stimuli materials have been applied in many fields since it can be activated from external system and localized in time and space. Although, optically healable polymers have been well developed in recent years, to be healed under mild conditions remains a big challenge for these materials. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a metallo-supramolecular polymer containing azopyridine ligands to address this conundrum. The resulting photo-healable polymer is highly stretchable (up to 735%) with a high toughness (16.33 MJ/m3) and excellent light-healing efficiency of ~90% after three cutting/healing cycles at mild temperature (40 °C) in various harsh conditions (e.g. underwater, subzero temperature). Furthermore, a novel bioinspired microcrack nanostructure design is presented to endow the resulted supramolecular elastomer with outstanding sensitivity to strain, which makes it very suitable for human motion monitoring applications. We believe this work will provide afflatus on future design, fabrication and application of photo-stimuli smart materials.

Abstract:Most natural biomaterials have an intrinsic ability to self-heal upon encountering damages. Therefore, living beings can recover when wounded. To mimic the self-healing properties of natural biomaterials and prolong the lifetime of the material in various applications, many synthetic self-healing polymers which can repair the internal or external damages have been developed. So far, a lot of synthetic polymers have been designed to self-heal by encapsulating healing agents (in microcapsules or microvascular networks, classified as extrinsic self-healing) or incorporating dynamic chemical bonds (including reversible covalent bonds such as alkoxyamine, disulfide, boronic ester and boroxine bonds or bonds formed by Diels-Alder reaction, or non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking interactions, host-guest interactions, ionic interactions and metal-ligand interactions, classified as intrinsic self-healing) into the polymer matrix. Due to the consumption of the encapsulated agents, the repair in extrinsic self-healing system is generally not repeatable. Therefore, intrinsic self-healing systems based on reversible covalent bonds or noncovalent interactions are preferred. Highly stretchable self-healing polymers are desirable due to their widespread application in flexible and stretchable electronic devices, including transistors, sensors, energy-storage devices, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the design of such materials is a nontrivial task. Elastomers are typically made up of cross-linked networks of long chains of polymers. The elasticity arises from the ability of the chains to reconfigure under an applied tension. The crosslinking sites between the long polymer chains ensure that the network returns to its original configuration when the tension is removed. Therefore, the cross-linking bonds should be as strong as possible, otherwise they will be disassociated upon tension and a permanent deformation will be resulted. However, for an autonomous self-healing material, weak dynamic bonds should present as crosslinking sites so that they will break first upon damaging and reform to heal. Polymers crosslinked by weak dynamic bonds tend to be soft and viscoelastic. Therefore, it is highly challenging to design materials that simultaneously exhibit good elasticity and autonomous self-healing properties. In this review, we highlighted the recent advances in design and synthesis of highly stretchable self-healing materials. The main strategy for designing self-healing materials, including (1) double network; (2) incorporating nano-fillers; (3) inducing multi-phase separation; (4) introducing sacrificial bonds; (5) increasing the energy of dynamic bonds, have been described. From this review, one could witness that the combination of high stretchability and self-healing can be realized by various strategies. However, it should be noted that most of the reported highly stretchable self-healing polymers exhibit slow elastic recovery behavior, i.e., they can only recover to their original length after relaxation for a long time after stretching. This is reasonable, because the weak and dynamic dynamic bonds between polymer chains break more readily upon stretching but it takes some time for them to reform, which invariably leads to poor recovery behavior. Therefore, it is still challenging to create materials that have both good elastic performance and autonomous healing capability. If self-healing polymer with fast elastic recovery upon stretching can be developed through continuing efforts of scientists, more widespread applications of self-healing materials can be expected.
A Transparent, Highly Stretchable, Autonomous Self-Healing Poly(dimethyl siloxane) Elastomer

Abstract:An innovative self-healing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer, namely, PDMS-TFB, is reported by incorporating the reversibly dynamic imine bond as the self-healing points into the PDMS networks. The PDMS-TFB elastomer features good optical transmittance (80%) in full visible light region, high stretchability (≈700%), and excellent autonomous self-healing ability at room temperature. Surprisingly, the self-healing behavior can take place in water and even at a temperature as low as -20 °C in air, showing a promising outlook for broader applications. As a proof-of-concept, this study demonstrates the use of the PDMS-TFB elastomer for preparing anticorrosion coating and adhesive layer, and also the use of such an elastomer to be the platform for fabricating the flexible interconnector and chemical sensor. Remarkably, no significant difference is observed between the pristine and healed samples. Taking full advantage of these unique properties, it is anticipated that such a PDMS-TFB elastomer shows wide applications in the fields of materials science, electronics, biology, optics, etc.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive structurally dynamic polymers are capable of mimicking the biological systems to adapt themselves to the surrounding environmental changes and subsequently exhibiting a wide range of responses ranging from self-healing to complex shape-morphing. Dynamic self-healing polymers (SHPs), shape-memory polymers (SMPs), and liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), which are three representative examples of stimuli-responsive structurally dynamic polymers, have been attracting broad and growing interest in recent years because of their potential applications in the fields of electronic skin, sensors, soft robots, artificial muscles, and so on. Recent advances and challenges in the developments toward dynamic SHPs, SMPs, and LCEs are reviewed, focusing on the chemistry strategies and the dynamic reaction mechanisms that enhance the performances of the materials including self-healing, reprocessing, and reprogramming. The different dynamic chemistries and their mechanisms on the enhanced functions of the materials are compared and discussed, where three summary tables are presented: A library of dynamic bonds and the resulting characteristics of the materials. Finally, a critical outline of the unresolved issues and future perspectives on the emerging developments is provided.

Abstract:As a key component for wearable electronics, intrinsically stretchable and healable semiconducting polymers are scarce because carrier mobility is often reduced with increasing stretchability and self-healability. Here, we combine stepwise polymerization and thermal conversion to introduce in situ continuous hydrogen bonding sites in a polymer backbone without breaking the conjugation or introducing bulky softer side chains, benefiting the intrachain and interchain charge transport. We demonstrate that a regular sequence structure facilitated the formation of big nanofibers with a high degree of aggregation, providing the loose and porous thin film with simultaneously improved charge transport, stretchability, and self-healability. The mobility of damaged devices can be recovered to 81% after a healing treatment. Fully stretchable transistor based on the designed polymer exhibited a greatly enhanced mobility up to 1.08 square centimeters per volt per second under 100% strain, which is an unprecedented value and constitutes a major step for the development of intrinsically stretchable and healable semiconducting polymers.

Abstract:Developing high‐performance adhesive materials not only aims at industrial and social requirements but also bears the fundamental importance of understanding the chemical factors of biological adhesion to develop biomimetic adhesive materials. Owing to the wide development of supramolecular chemistry, numerous supramolecular tools are exploited and proved to be reliable in the replacement of traditional covalent materials by reversible noncovalent or dynamic covalent materials. Taking advantage of these ready‐to‐use supramolecular toolboxes, supramolecular adhesive materials are rising and promising toward “smart” adhesives, that is, enabling responsiveness, reversibility, and recyclability. Compared with polymeric adhesive materials, low‐molecular‐weight adhesives feature chemically precise structure, easier engineering by molecular design, and hence higher reproducibility. However, it remains highly challenging to make high‐performance adhesive materials by low‐molecular‐weight feedstocks. This review will focus on the recent advancement in the construction of supramolecular adhesive materials by small‐molecule self‐assembly. The design guidelines and consideration on the molecular scale will be discussed and summarized on how to enhance the strength of adhesives. Meanwhile, owing to the dynamic nature of supramolecular self‐assembly, several “smart” functions of such materials will be presented, such as stimuli–responsiveness and adaptiveness. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives of this emerging field will be proposed.
