Abstract:Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a class of the emerging pollutants that pose a potential environmental threat to marine ecosystems. In this study, a simple analytical method using ultrasound-assisted extraction combined with gas purges microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) coupled with GC-MS was utilized for the reliable and rapid determination of PAEs in different types of marine sediment. The analytical results showed that the method exhibited excellent reproducibility, linear responses, and detection limits, which verified the suitability of the method for the determination of PAEs in marine sediment. This approach requires minimal reagents, solvents, and sample pretreatment procedures as well as a short analysis time; thus, procedural blanks can be kept to a minimum. This method was demonstrated to be a highly efficient and sensitive quantitative analytical method for the simple detection of PAEs in marine sediment.
Simultaneous Determination of Phthalates and Parabens in Cosmetic Products by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Coupled with Solid Phase Extraction

Abstract:Studies have been carried out on the simultaneous determination of 8 phthalates, i. e. di-ethyl phthalate (DEP) , di-propyl phthalate (DPP) , di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP) , dibutyl phthalate (DBP) , benzyl butyl phthalate ( BBP) , di-cyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) , di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-octyl phthalate (DOP) and 4 parabens, i. e. methylparaben (MPB), ethylparaben (EPB), propyl paraben (PPB), and butyl paraben (BPB) by gas chromatography in combination with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in electron ionisation mode (EI) with selected-ion monitoring (SIM) acquisition method. The phthalates and parabens in 15 cosmetic products, including hair sprays, perfumes, deodorants, cream, lotion, etc. were determined. The determination of the samples were performed after sonication-assisted extraction with methanol, cleaned up with an LC-C18 column (3 mL) and analyzed by GC/MS method. The base peak (m/z 149) of the phthalates and the base peak (m/z 121) of the parabens were selected for the screening studies. The characteristic ions, m/z 121, 149, 177, 222 for DEP; m/z 149, 191, 209 for DPP; m/z 57, 149, 223 for DIBP; m/z 104, 149 for DBP; m/z 91, 132, 149, 206 for BBP; m/z 55, 149, 167 for DCHP; m/z 113, 149, 167, 279 for DEHP; m/z 149, 279 for DOP; m/z 65, 93, 121, 152 for MPB; m/z 93, 121, 138, 166 for EPB; m/z 93, 121, 138, 180 for PPB; and m/z 93, 121, 138, 194 for BPB were chosen for quantitative studies. These techniques are capable to detect phthalates and parabens at the level of 0. 1 -5. 0 microg/kg. Overall recoveries were 80% - 100% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 10%. Only one of the 15 examined samples was free from phthalates and parabens. The rest 14 samples were found to contain at least 3 or more of these phthalates and/or parabens. The predominant phthalates detected in the studied samples were MPB, PPB, DPP, DCHP and DEHP. The residue levels were at 1. 42 -4 278 mg/kg.

Abstract:The article is to investigate the phthalate esters in food plastic packaging materials by GC/MS.The Selective Ion Monitoring Mode of GC/MS was used to test the samples.The linear ranges of the method were very good as follows,0.9998(DBP),0.9998(BBP),0.9997(DEHP),1.0(DINP),0.998(DNOP)and 0.9999(DIDP).The recoveries were 82.3%～90.1%(DBP),79.6%～87.8%(BBP),87.2%～96.2%(DEHP),80.4%～88.6%(DINP),79.5%～86.5%(DNOP)and 98.4%～108%(DIDP),respectively.The RSD of the method were all less than 10%(n=3).The method shows to be simple,fast,credible and accurate to analyses the phthalate esters in food plastic packaging materials.

Abstract:Phthalates are synthetic chemicals widely used, mainly as plasticizers, which are ubiquitous and recognized as endocrine-disrupting chemicals. For investigation of phthalate residues leached from PET bottles into drinking water, a simple and sensitive method was developed, validated and applied to a series of real samples. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was used in direct immersion mode for concentration of phthalate traces from 10 mL of each water sample. Four commercially available SPME fibers were tested and compared, while six dialkyl phthalates were investigated: dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), diisopropyl phthalate (DiPP), diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) and di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). The extracted phthalic acid esters were separated and quantified by gas chromatography hyphenated with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and a detection method based on multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was fully developed, optimized and validated. The fiber which showed the highest ability for extraction of phthalates was DVB/CAR/PDMS which combines a liquid polymeric coating (polydimethyl siloxane and divinylbenzene) with a carboxen porous sorbent layer. The obtained limit of detection was in the range between 0.3 and 2.6 ng mL-1. Thus, this fiber was used for extraction of phthalates from twelve commercial PET bottled water samples. All investigated water brands showed the presence of two to six phthalates at concentrations between 6.3 and 112.2 ng mL-1. The highest level was observed for DnBP, followed by DEHP, DiBP, DMP, DEP and DiPP.

Abstract:A simple and fast method is proposed to analyze commercial personal perfumes. Our method includes measurement of phthalates, known to be major sources of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDC), which originate from the less volatile fraction of perfumes. The quantification of phthalates were carried out directly with no sample preparation required on 30 samples of commercial products using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as a detector. The total concentrations of 15 investigated compounds ranged from 17 to 9650 mg/L with an average of 2643 mg/L. The highest total concentration was found in cologne. Diethyl phthalate (DEP), diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) were detected in appreciable concentrations. Further, it was found that the composition of counterfeit samples varied widely from that of authentic products. The composition of old products was different from that of recent perfumes, which contain less harmful chemicals, attributed to the ban on some phthalates in Europe due their toxicity. It should be noted that older and contaminated products are not equivalent to authentic products when considering quality, safety, and probably effectiveness. Older and nonapproved perfumes contain chemicals that are not allowed for commercial use and may contain toxic impurities.

Abstract:A thermo‐assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on dispersive liquid‐liquid microextraction followed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection was developed for the analysis of five phthalate esters in different water samples. In the procedure involved, a DES composed of lidocaine, an amphiphilic amine, and oleic acid, was mixed with the sample assisted by ultrasound, and phase separation was achieved with increasing temperature. The heating of the extraction system induced the change of acid‐base properties of the DES components. Thus, the formation of microdroplets of DES in the sample was provided, and two phases were separated. The structure of the upper hydrophobic layer was characterized by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. Also, the amount of water in the DES phase was analyzed by mass spectrometer and Karl Fischer titration. Some critical variables on the extraction yield were assessed. The proposed method achieved 1.2–1.3 and 4.1–4.3 μg/L for limits of detection and limits of quantification, respectively. The intra‐day and inter‐day percentage relative standard deviations (n = 5) were determined to be in the range of 4.2–6.2% and 5.1–7.2%, respectively. Ultimately, this method analyzed the five phthalate esters in different water samples with high recoveries.

Abstract:In the present study, method of solid-phase extraction followed by capillary gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (SPE-GC-MS) was used for quantitative analysis of trace levels of phthalates in the most tow Egyptians traditional food (foul medams and koushary) and drinks (black tea and instant black coffee) and bottled water samples.Method performance was evaluated in terms of accuracy, linearity, limits of detection and recovery. Abstract:A novel liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) method was presented in this paper. The most attractive feature of this method is using a polychloroprene rubber tube (PCR tube) instead of a microsyringe to load organic solvent. The PCR tube and sample vial were horizontally placed so that the selection of organic solvent was not affected by the density of extractant. Therefore, the stability of organic solvent increased and the available organic solvent was extended greatly. In this work, three phthalate esters (PAEs) (dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP)) were chosen as model analytes to testify the feasibility of the new method. A series of extraction parameters have been investigated systematically. Under the optimized condition, the method showed linear response over four orders of magnitude, ranged from 0.005mgL−1 to 50mgL−1. The correlation coefficients (r) were better than 0.997 and the limits of detection (LOD) were 0.0012mgL−1 for DMP, 0.0014mgL−1 for DEP and 0.0022mgL−1 for DnBP. Good reproducibility of extraction was acquired, the inter-day and intra-day relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) were below 7.9% and 7.4%, respectively. Recoveries that ranged from 82.7% to 116.9% were gained when the new method was used to determine three phthalate esters in landfill leachates. The enrichment factors were 5–26 for the three PAEs. The novel LPME is promising to be an alternative sample preparation method for extracting target analytes in complex sample matrices because of the simplicity, low cost and short sample preparation time.
Simultaneous Determination of Phthalate Diesters and Monoesters in Soil Using Accelerated Solvent Extraction and Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled with Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Phthalate diesters are a group of plasticizers extensively used in the manufacturing and processing plastics. Phthalate monoesters are the primary degradation products of the diesters. Accumulation of endocrine disruptive diesters and monoesters in soil is of great concern because of the extensive use plastic mulching and misdisposal of plastics. Accurate determination of their levels in soil is critical assess the occurrence, exposure, and risks of phthalate diesters and monoesters. In this study, we aimed to develop a robust and environmentally friendly method for the simultaneous determination of phthalate diesters and monoesters in soil. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray tandem mass spectrometry was used for quantification, combined with accelerated solvent extraction and in-line cleanup for sample preparation. The method detection limits for the 14 diesters and 11 monoesters were in the range of 0.59 to 10.08 ng g(-1) d.w. Acceptable recoveries (69%-131%) for these analytes were obtained when four deuterated analogs were used for internal calibration, and intra-and inter-day variations were less than 15%. This method was later successfully applied to five soil samples, and 8 diesters and 7 monoesters were detected with the maximum concentration up to 1142.2 ng g(-1) d.w. The method developed in this study can be used for screening and accurate quantification of phthalate diesters and monoesters in soil and possibly in other environmental matrices. Abstract:Rationale: Several phthalates and bisphenol A are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Recently, their use has been partially restricted and less toxic compounds, such as di-2-ethylhexyl terephthalate (DEHTP), have been placed on the market. The aim of this work was to develop and validate a method for the simultaneous quantitation of bisphenol A and urinary metabolites of phthalates, including DEHTP. Methods: An isotopic dilution high-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/ESI-MS/MS) method for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA), monobenzyl phthalate (MBzP), mono-2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl phthalate (MECPP), mono-2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl terephthalate (MECPTP), mono-2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl terephthalate (MEHHTP), monoethyl phthalate (MEP), and mono-n/i-butyl phthalates (MnBP/MiBP) in human urine was developed. A complete validation was carried out and the method was applied to 36 non-occupationally exposed adults. Results: Limits of quantitation ranged from 0.02 (MECPP) to 1 μg/L (MnBP and MiBP). Relative standard deviations below 10% indicated a suitable precision; accuracy, evaluated using a standard reference material, ranged from 74.3% to 117.5%; isotopically labelled internal standards were suitable for correcting the matrix effect. The accuracy was confirmed by the successful participation in an external verification exercise. However, for terephthalates, the validation was incomplete due to the lack of reference materials and external verification. Levels of the investigated chemicals in subjects were in line with those previously reported. Conclusions: An LC/MS/MS assay for the simultaneous measurement of BPA and phthalate metabolites in human urine was developed and validated; it is useful to investigate exposure in epidemiological studies involving the general population.

Abstract:The aim of this study is the extraction and determination of di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and three phthalate esters including di-iso-butyl phthalate, di-n-butyl-phthalate, and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in several samples which were packed in plastic packages (orange and pineapple juices, three brands of mineral water, and two injectable pharmaceutical solutions). In this work, stearic acid coated calcium carbonate is used as a sorbent in dispersive solid phase extraction followed by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction. The procedure initiates with the adsorption of the analytes onto the adsorbent. Then, the analytes are removed from the adsorbent by employing an elution solvent. After eluting the adsorbed analytes, the elution solvent is mixed with a few microlitres of a proper extraction solvent. Then, the obtained mixture is rapidly injected into deionised water during the microextraction procedure to attain higher concentrations of the target analytes. Ultimately, an aliquot of the sedimented organic phase is isolated from the aqueous phase by centrifuging and injected into gas chromatography–flame ionisation detector. Under optimal extraction conditions, the limits of detection and quantification were in the ranges of 0.15–0.40 and 0.50–1.33 µg L−1, respectively. Relative standard deviations were less than or equal to 5% for both intra- (n = 6) and inter-day (n = 4) precisions at a concentration of 50 µg L−1 of each analyte. Abstract:The declining quality of drinking water supplies due to industrial waste is the result of highly diverse industrial processes. In this context, the establishment of analytical methods focused on monitoring organic compounds related to environmental and health problems is very important. In this study, a quick and effective method based on dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC-QqQ-MS/MS) was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of pesticide residues and related compounds in water. The proposed DLLME method uses water sample aliquots of 5 mL, 2 mL of acetone as a dispersive solvent and 50 μL of carbon tetrachloride as an extraction solvent at low temperature. This method was successfully applied for the determination of pesticide residues and related compounds in water at quantification limits between 0.03 and 0.10 μg L−1. The method showed a linear range from 0.05 to 10.0 μg L−1 with r2 > 0.998. Recovery assays presented mean recoveries between 70 and 120% for most of the compounds with good precision, despite different chemical natures of the compounds analyzed.

Abstract:Sewage sludge is a by-product obtained from sewage treatment plants (STP) that can be used to improve physical and chemical properties of the soil. However, xenobiotic compounds such as phthalates can be found in this material. Thus, the objective of this study was to optimise and validate the solid-liquid extraction with low-temperature purification (SLE-LTP) for the determination of five phthalates in sludge samples. Analyses were performed by gas chromatography coupled to the mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The SLE-LTP optimised parameters were water volume, extraction solvent, shaking mode and, freezing time. The most advantage of the proposed method is that it did not require additional clean up of the extracts with sorbents. In the best condition of extraction, recoveries of the five target analytes ranged from 76% to 119% and relative standard deviations were lower than 15%. Limits of quantification were 40 μg kg−1 for four phthalates and 80 μg kg−1 for dietylhexylphthalate (DEHP), which were about 6 to 12 times lower than maximum residue limits (MRL) established by Brazilian legislation. The validate method was applied to sewage sludge collected from six municipalities of Minas Gerais. Approximately 83% of the analyzed samples were contaminated by some phthalate, mainly DEHP with concentration ranging from 0.78 to 10.24 mg kg−1.

Abstract:In this work, the dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction technique based on the solidification of the organic phase (DLLME-SFO) has been automated for the first time. DLLME-SFO is automated by hyphenating a sequential injection analysis (SIA) system with a custom-made robotic phase separator. Automated in-syringe DLLME is followed by phase separation in a 3D printed device integrating a Peltier cell set, mounted on a multi-axis robotic arm. The combined action of the flow system and the robotic arm is controlled by a single software package, enabling the solidification/melting and collection of the organic phase for further analyte quantification. As proof-of-concept, automated DLLME-SFO was applied to the extraction of parabens followed by separation using liquid chromatography, obtaining LODs between 0.3 and 1.3 µg L-1 (4 mL of sample extracted in 1 mL of 1-dodecanol: MeOH, 15:85, v-v). The method showed a high reproducibility, obtaining intraday RSDs between 4.6% and 5.8% (n = 6), and interday RSDs between 5.6% and 8.6% (n = 6). The developed method was evaluated for the determination of parabens in water, urine, saliva, and personal care products.

Abstract:Alternative plasticizers (APs) have been increasingly used in the last decade to replace conventional phthalate esters, in particular di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), due to the toxicity of the latter. However, there is currently very little data about the toxicity of and exposure to APs. No method exists so far for the analysis of multiple exposure biomarkers. The objective of this work consisted in developing a simple bioanalytical procedure for the analysis of multiple exposure biomarkers of APs in human urine and serum. Focus was set on metabolites of di(2-propylheptyl) phthalate (DPrHpP), di(isononyl)cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH), di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHTP) and di-2-ethylhexyl adipate (DEHA). A sample preparation protocol was developed and optimized using Oasis HLB solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges. Subsequently, an instrumental method based on liquid-chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was optimized. Following established guidelines, the sample preparation and instrumental methods were validated in terms of recovery, matrix effects, carry-over, linearity, limits of quantification, within- and between-run precision and trueness. Obtained results were satisfactory for all compounds except for one of the metabolites of DEHA (i.e., mono(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (MEHA)). A pilot biomonitoring study was carried out to assess the method's ability to detect and quantify target analytes in human urine and serum. In urine, most analytes could be detected with frequencies ranging from 8% for mono(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) adipate (OH-MEHA) and cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic mono hydroxyisononyl ester (OH-MINCH) to 92% for mono(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) adipate (oxo-MEHA), whilst most compounds could not be detected in serum, except for mono(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (MEHTP) and mono-(2-propyl-6-hydroxyheptyl) phthalate (OH-MPrHpP) which were detected in all samples. The obtained results show that the developed method can be used to simultaneously analyse multiple exposure biomarkers to APs in human urine and serum.

Abstract:A simple, cost effective, and efficient dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) method was developed and optimized for the determination of mifepristone, benzophenone, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid in different environmental water matrices followed by UHPLC–QTOF–MS analysis. In the preliminary experiments, the univariate optimization approach was used to select tetrachloroethylene and acetonitrile as extraction and disperser solvents, respectively. The significant factors influencing DLLME were screened using full factorial design, and the optimal values for each variable were then derived through further optimization using central composite design with desirability function. The optimal conditions were achieved with 195 μL of tetrachloroethylene as extraction solvent, 1439 μL of acetonitrile as disperser solvent, and sample pH of 5.8. Under these conditions, the method provided the detection limits ranging from 0.11–0.48 μg/L and recoveries ranging from 23.32–145.43% across all samples. The enrichment factor obtained ranged from 11.66–72.72. The proposed method was then successfully applied in wastewater treatment plant influent and effluent, including river water receiving wastewater treatment plant effluent discharge. Only benzophenone was detected in the concentration range of 0.79–0.88 μg/L across all the water samples. The calculated risk quotient resulting from benzophenone exposure in water samples showed a low potential risk to human health and the aquatic ecosystem. The method was also evaluated for its environmental friendliness using various metrics tools such as Analytical Eco–Scale (AES), Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), Analytical GREEnness (AGREE), Analytical Greenness for Sample Preparation (AGREEprep), and Sample Preparation Metric of Sustainability (SPMS). Only AES qualified the method as green while it was considered acceptable and sustainable when assessed using SPMS.

Determination of 18 Phthalic Acid Esters in Drinking Water by Gas Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry with Solid Phase Extraction

Abstract:A gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(GC-MS/MS) was established for the determination of 18 kinds of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in drinking water. The drinking water was enriched by hydrophilicl pophilibalance (HLB) glass column and eluted with dichloromethane, and then quantified by external standard method in multiple reactions monitoring mode (MRM). Under the optimized conditions, the target concentrations and peak areas were linearly correlated in the range of 0.02 mg/kg-1.00 mg/kg, and the correlation coefficients were greater than 0.998. Recovery studies were carried out on spiked matrices (the purified water) with 18 PAEs at spiking levels of 0.02, 0.1, 0.2 mg/kg and the mean recoveries were 71.3％-113 ％, with relative standard deviations less than 6.8 ％. Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(DEHP) were detected in four chromatographic pure organic solvents:dichloromethane, methanol, n-hexane and acetonitrile which were concentrated 10 times. The content ranges were 0.00695 mg/kg-0.323 mg/kg. Multiple process blank tests could eliminate the interference of the reagents. The method has the advantages of high enrichment, fast and accurate, and can be used for the actual detection and analysis of 18 kinds of PAEs in drinking water.

Abstract:A method using dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) prior to high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) was developed to determine seven additives from the plastics industry (butylated hydroxytoluene, diisodecyl phthalate, irgafos 168, lawsone, quercetin, triclosan and vitamin E) in seawater samples. These compounds can reach seawater due to direct discharge from wastewater treatment plants and leaching from plastics and microplastics. The extraction was performed using 25 mL of seawater, 500 μL of 1-octanol (extraction solvent) and a stirring step instead of dispersive solvent. Additive concentrations were determined by LC-DAD on a C18 column with a mobile phase of acetonitrile and phosphoric acid aqueous solution (pH 3.5) by gradient elution. The analytical recoveries ranged from 82 to 93% for all compounds, except for lawsone (60%). Repeatability and intermediate precision were adequate with RSD < calculated values following the Horwitz equation at the concentration levels evaluated (0.06 and 0.24 mg L −1 ). All additives exhibited linear matrix calibration curves ( R 2 > 0.99). Detection limits ranged from 0.009 to 0.028 mg L −1 and quantification limits ranged from 0.027 to 0.084 mg L −1 . Finally, the application of the method to real samples verified the method as accurate and applicable to seawater.

Abstract:A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) method to determine polar and thermally unstable phthalate metabolites [monomethyl phthalate–MMP, monoethyl phthalate–MEP, mono-n-butyl phthalate–MnBP, mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate–MEHP] has been developed. This is the first report presenting the separation of monophthalates without derivatization step and any additional equipment or special injection port. Injection parameters (temperature, pressure, time, and volume of injection), chromatographic separation (retention gap, temperature program), and MS detection/identification (working parameters, ion selection) were investigated. Mechanisms and phenomena occurring under different conditions in the GC injector were evaluated and discussed. The limits of detection (LODs) of MMP, MEP, MnBP, MEHP in the protocol were 0.049, 0.036, 0.038, and 0.029 ng (per 2 μL of injection), respectively. The response of the monophthalates was found to be linear in the tested concentration range (for MMP: 0.15–100 ng, MEP and MnBP: 0.11–100 ng, MEHP: 0.087–100 ng per 2 μL) with the coefficient of determination higher than 0.9817 and inter-day precision in the range of 1.4–5.4%. The developed method is fast, easy and repeatable. Moreover, it allows for the elimination of derivatization agents, reduction of toxic waste production and simplification of analytical procedure.
