Abstract:My review of Don Ihde’s new book, Husserl’s Missing Technologies begins by identifying a thematic link binding its chapters: specifically, the exploration of alternative histories for the trajectory of classical Husserlian phenomenology. Ihde’s book can be seen as a meditation on questions like the following: “What might phenomenology have been had Husserl paid more attention to the essential role of instrumentation and experiment in science, or to the mediating role of technologies in perception? What road might phenomenology have taken had Husserl traveled it in conversation with John Dewey, rather than the ghost of Descartes?” The book ably demonstrates how such alternative paths might have enriched philosophy, in ways that closely mirror Ihde’s own contributions to postphenomenological thought. In particular, Ihde exposes Husserl’s failure to grasp technoscience as an activity that does not only reduce materiality to mathematical formalisms, but produces new material forms and sensibilities. Yet I resist the book’s implied charge that Husserlian phenomenology is a moribund tradition that has largely exhausted its power. Instead, I argue that the progressive force and intrinsic elasticity of the phenomenological method endures in spite of the inevitable limits of Husserl’s philosophical imagination, allowing his assumptions and results (and ours) to be remade again and again in the light of the ‘things themselves.’ Moreover, the relevance of Husserl’s critique of reductive scientism has enduring relevance today; while modern science may be a practice far richer than Husserl understood, the science of our day is far from rich enough.
Beyond the canon: Don Ihde and North American philosophy of technology

Abstract:The paper seeks to discuss the origin and development of North American philosophy of technology against the background of the phenomenological canon. More specifically, it traces the trajectory of Don Ihde’s thought, whose “Technics and Praxis” (1979) is usually cited as the first North American book specifically described as a philosophy of technology. While the phenomenological tradition provided a firm foundation for Ihde’s project, it has never acted as a rigid conceptual framework. Enriching his theoretical perspective with insights taken from the engagements with pragmatism, Ihde departed from Heideggerian-style traditional phenomenological analyses of technology in a number of ways, which this paper discusses. In most general terms, as I argue, Ihde has reversed the direction of Heideggerian inquiry that concentrates on how concrete tools and procedures disclose their underlying reality and thus moved towards the analysis of technologies in their particularities. This shift has allowed him to approach the multidimensionality of technologies as material cultures within a lifeworld and explore the different aspects of experience that result from human-technology relations as embedded in specific cultural and social dimensions.

Abstract:K. Godel started his overall studies of E. Husserl at the end of the fifties of the last century. He mainly focused on Husserl's method of ideal intuition and reached therefrom a positive conclusion: concept is perceivable. In principle, the ideal intuition upheld by Husserl may be investigated from at least three phenomenological perspectives: 1. noesis-noema; 2. the apprehension-materials (Auffassungsmaterie) in noesis; 3. the apprehension-form (Auffassungsform) in noema. In Godel's relevant studies, these three perspectives are more or less touched by him, and are described in his own way. Godel all the time remained silent regarding these study results. In terms of this, he of course had his own reasons.
Let Things Speak: Don Ihde’s Thought and Philosophy of Technology in China

Abstract:Don Ihde or 唐·伊德 (Tánɡ Yīdé) is well known to Chinese scholars, especially those concerned with philosophy of technology, because of his development of postphenomenology and his emphasis on technologies’ embodiment of science and culture. Chinese engagement with Ihde has also been facilitated by his three extended trips to the country. This review of the papers and books written by Chinese scholars on his work shows the importance of his ideas in Chinese philosophy of technology. Ihde has encouraged Chinese scholars to think about the theoretical aspect of technology, over and above its practical economic objectives; to consider human-technology relations more carefully; and to develop a balance between constructivist and deterministic perspectives. More critical veins of recent scholarship have led to additional insights on the “human” (or “I”) in human-technology relations, the differences between directly perceived and instrumentally mediated experiences, and his conceptualization of material hermeneutics. The review of Chinese scholarship is supplemented by extensive references to Ihde’s work and that of other thinkers in the Western tradition. Thinking through this research raises three other questions: Is there a Chinese Don Ihde? To what extent does Chinese philosophy of technology correspond with Ihde’s ideas? And what are the avenues through which Chinese scholars can open dialogues with them?
Ihde’s Revolutions: From Paris to Science, Rock, and Radical Architecture

Abstract:This paper traces the development of Ihde’s revolutionary phenomenology from his early foray into sound as an issue for popular media and his experience of intellectual revolution in Paris in 1968 to his interrogation of the privilege of visuality in scientific praxis and his examination of rock music as a therapeutic alternative to mono-sensual vision. The early material reveals Ihde’s ethical instincts in assessing popular culture and his understanding of revolution. The assessments of science and rock uncover his frustration at the preclusion of ethics by objectivity and the possibility of epistemic immersion in the lifeworld through hearing. After analysis of over half a century of Ihde’s phenomenology, it is argued that Ihde’s revolutionary search for full- or multi-sense epistemology is a call to displace the hegemony of the sciences in defining ontology and epistemology in the contemporary lifeworld. The chapter concludes with the radical architecture of Arakawa and Madeline Gins, in whose “crisis ethics” Ihde found instantiation of just the kind of conceptual revolution in epistemology he had been seeking for so long.
For a Cosmotechnical Event: In Honor of Don Ihde and Bernard Stiegler

Abstract:What will philosophy of technology be as its practitioners depart from the crossroads of the ideas of Don Ihde and Bernard Stiegler? Their two lines of thought confront and cross each other, giving rise to different ways of understanding technologies. Rather than following one or the other of these directions, I propose an Erörterung of such crossroads. As Martin Heidegger’s 1953 commentary on Georg Trakl’s poetry (Die Sprach im Gedichte) insists, Erörterung means, first, “to point out the proper place or site of something to situate it (das Weisen in den Ort),” and, second, “to heed that place or site (das Beachten des Ortes).” This Erörterung has to be conducted at multiple times, on multiple levels, as each of them hermeneutically identifies its own site. I proceed first through an Erörterung of the crossroads of the thinking of technology after Ihde and Stiegler, and second through an Erörterung of the Ort or the site of the first Erörterung, where the Ort for Heidegger is the land of the evening, the Occident [Abendland], in the throes of globalization, or more precisely Americanisation, a form of disorientation, that obscures the unconcealment of the essence of the human-technology relationship central to Heidegger. In the third part, I propose that the way to integrate and extend Heidegger, Ihde, and Stiegler is to acknowledge the importance of historical, cultural, and geopolitical difference in the interrelationship between the cosmos, morality, and technical activities, what I call cosmotechnics.

Abstract:This research aims to discuss the instruments of science and the materiality of science in the perspective of technology philosophy Don Ihde. This research method is qualitative through library research. Therefore, this research focuses its study on sources that are literate without the need for field research. The results and discussion include scientific analysis through material hermeneutics according to Don Ihde's thinking. The findings of this study based on Don Ihde's view, it can be understood that science is hermeneutics because science is an attempt to interpret by understanding phenomena through the senses or in another meaning such as giving meaning to writing in a text. While reading the materiality of science is not only limited to connected phenomena. The materiality of science includes the rationality of technologically structured instruments. This allows the reading of the world not to be perceived by the senses. Therefore, reading the materiality of science is always accompanied by reading the materiality of technology.

Abstract:Anyone who has maintained a sustained philosophical relationship with Don Ihde that includes face-to-face interaction has probably heard him acknowledge a pragmatist bent in his thought. In Experiential Phenomenology: Multistabilities, Ihde characterizes postphenomenology as “pragmatism + phenomenology”; he also provides a brief critical discussion of John Dewey and Richard Rorty in his book Husserl’s Missing Technologies, and titles one chapter “Adding Pragmatism to Phenomenology.” These two late books publicize Ihde’s sympathy to pragmatism, and they respond to ways in which others working in the philosophy of technology have sought to link Ihde’s work to pragmatist philosophy. But there is still work to be done in exposing his pragmatist proclivities. This chapter (a) clarifies how pragmatism should be understood as a philosophical school of thought; (b) introduces and explicates how early pragmatists drew upon evolution to reformulate their approach to epistemology; (c) explains how the naturalism of this approach differs from the lingering idealism of Continental thinkers; and then (d) identifies the threads in Ihde’s work that are most indicative of these two characteristically pragmatist tendencies. The concluding section briefly recounts how this reading of Ihde takes postphenomenology beyond accounts that have been made by others working in the philosophy of technology, and establishes Ihde’s stature as a thinker who avoided some of the most costly philosophical blunders of the twentieth century.

Abstract:Given digital transformations in representation, virtuality, and artistic experience, how might philosophy continue to provide a productive avenue for thinking the relations between art and technology? Following a brief summary of recent French philosophical accounts of art and new technology, this essay explores Jean-Luc Nancy’s expansive thinking on technology in the digital moment. While Nancy would be the last philosopher to deny the negative socioeconomic features of the global network, he might be the first to insist that it be inhabited philosophically through the thought of exposition in order to permit technique to figure differently. Throughout his texts, Nancy mobilizes the prepositional construct là où to figure the open touch of art and to render heterogeneous the most traditional concepts of state and world, particularly as these concepts are now enveloped with the fractal skin of digital technology. This essay further suggests that Ryoji Ikeda’s digital installation, “The Transfinite,” performs Nancy’s distinction between the hegemonic tradition of technologie and the exposition of écotechnie. Écotechnie activates the spacings of touch, proximity, and (près)positionality that constitute the potential energetic horizons of technology. The parameters of écotechnie shake and disturb predetermined assumptions about the culture, capital, and violence of technology and its relation to art and philosophy.

Abstract:Technological research proposes stimulating challenges starting from the new scenarios arising since XX century, the environmental imperative imposes new responsibilities, the industrial production, requires the rethinking of the concept of "material culture" as well as new information technologies lead to new models of theoretical and conceptual elaboration. We live a new condition, defined by Augé «surmodernitè», where history fades into actuality, space turns into images and individuals from being actors become spectators. The industrial design moves from tackling "traditional culture" of the project to the "culture of innovation" for which the "know-how", which allows the transition from theory to practice, is replaced by the "can-do" that is the design of a technological solution allowing to model artifacts in a new way and, as a consequence, introducing a different interaction between users and the context. The contribution illustrates the design experimentation of the industrial invention “inclusive control system device [repositionable]”.

Abstract:Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in the field of 'art-science' collaborations for their perceived capacity to develop new cultural understandings of technology and science. In this article, and through an engagement with the philosophy of Gilbert Simondon, I argue that if art-science represents an important site for the formation of an alternate technical culture today, then it is because of the new technical mentalities that such practices might cultivate. Here, creating a new technical mentality is more than just a representational concern with enhancing 'public awareness' of technology, instead referring to more material transformations in our embodied capacities for perceiving and affectively engaging with technologies. I flesh this potential out through an encounter with work of Art Orienté objet , whose art-science collaborations challenge the anthropocentric and utilitarian mentalities of contemporary bioscience through explorations of the transindividual conditions of human embodiment and its material immersion within nonhuman ecologies.

Ihde meets Papert: combining postphenomenology and constructionism for a future agenda of philosophy of education in the era of digital technologies

Abstract:The paper proposes a framework for thinking about digital technologies, including AI, in education. The framework combines Don Ihde's postphenomenology and Seymour Papert's constructionism. The former is rooted in the philosophy of technology, the latter – in education and technology. The intersections between the two theories have been mentioned but not explored. There are biographical affinities between the two thinkers, and their ground-breaking works were published in adjacent years – Ihde's Technics and Praxis in 1979 and Papert's Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas in 1980. The intersection between the two theories is examined through a review of constructionism through the prism of the Ihde's four postphenomenological relations showing how each relation matches a major constructionist thread: for embodiment relations, personalization fits; for hermeneutic relations – computational thinking; for alterity relations – microworld; and for background relations – democratization. The paper shows how the two theories contribute to each other and enrich the analysis.

The Creative Process in the Digital Media

Abstract:This presentation proposal brings recent researches on visuality and its transformations with new technologies. The study shows the analysis of the creative trajectory of some artists that proposed to share their works, allowing for a reflection on the process and on the movements of interaction about how knowledge and artistic sensitivity allow recognizing how a work of art is developed. The research is supported by the ideas of Pierre Levy and Steven Jonhson as collaborators of technical thinking and Fayga Ostrower, who developed analyses on drawing. They are, however, expanded by Cecília Salles; along the work, analytical studies connect such concepts to the creative thinking implied in the development of a work of art. The creative trajectory of the artists analyzed allows us to reflect on the interactions made, understand the choice of the digital software and the different ways of accessing digital tools that represent a communicative way before the environment. In the present study, we have the creative process shared among the following components: the artist as a user and manipulator of the software, the knowledge of the Graphic Interface and the artistic sensitivity of handling, which allow understanding the choices emerging along the entire creative process, such as the selections of the digital software and of the tools that best suit the development. The digital media creates a new niche of knowledge and focus for the research, as it accounts for creating new fields for the human being to act and, therefore, new fields of work. The investigation of new possibilities to work with the digital media is pointed out by Flusser, who shows that human beings have a functional and investigative characteristic they use for creating new inputs for production, since the processing speed in the digital media is undoubtedly extraordinary. The interface is the point of contact between humans and the machine, it is where the relationship between human beings and the digital space occurs, generating, in this exchange, the visual and graphic environment of the digital media. It is thus a communicative space of humans and digital media, where different digital information is found making the software respond to the user needs. To understand how digital resources operate in creation, we conducted a deconstruction of the drawing artistic processes, highlighting details of the digital media added to the knowledge of the Graphic Interface of the types of software under study. The deconstruction conducted in our work allowed understanding the processes involved in creating in digital media and understanding the complexity of conducting the work. The knowledge process is a fundamental point for understanding this network, since we observe in the work completed and delivered to the public, that the actions selected indicate the unfolding of the artist’s trajectory. The approaches employed in our research can expand the processes for studying the subject, in the sense that they certainly deconstruct the solely technical possibilities to highlight the understanding of a creative construction process.
Digital Imagination: Ihde’s and Stiegler’s Concepts of Imagination

Abstract:As AI algorithms advance and produce surprising outputs, the question of imagination arises. Can we classify their output as imaginative? And what is their effect on human imagination? Apparently, algorithms follow Kant's explanations on human imagination, thereby pushing us to update our understanding of imagination by taking into account the co-shaping between humans and their technologies. Such a new understating is offered in this article based on the theories of Don Ihde and Bernard Stiegler. With Ihde, imagination is conceived as tightly linked to perception. Imagination evolves from the modernist task of seeking new points-of-view to a new mode in which technologies present imaginative layers of information on top of reality. With Stiegler, imagination is regarded as tightly linked to memory. He demonstrates how imagination complements memory, serves as a condition to memory/technology and at the same time how imagination itself is conditioned by memory/technology. In this article I develop a new synthesis: imagination as composed of perception and memory. This is the foundation of my layered model of digital imagination. In this model, the task of AI algorithms is the filling in of the layers with data. By producing endless possibilities, these technologies "automate" the Kantian "free play" of imagination, allowing us to examine more options and focus on the best of them. The model reserves the production of meaning to humans. Our role as humans is to generate (or reveal) meaning to the link(s) between layers and establish new layers.

Abstract:This text focuses on the dominant visual culture current policies, its relationship with the market and the partnership of this relationship with art. Information (visual) that indicates the actions of storing and disseminating information is a traditional form of activity that all cultures frequently resort to through art, from the first ages to the present. Because it is known that the functionality of the image is encountered even in cave painting in the history of civilization and the first data are these paintings built with communicative concern. Nevertheless, the real (purposeful) informatic image emerges in church murals in medieval Christian Europe. These (communicative) images, which emerge as an activity of the dominant system to convey itself, are informatic messages in terms of the meaning they are loaded. Accordingly, the image is always communicative between culture, market, system and individual. With this aspect, image is a type of information that enters the field of visual culture and turns into a kind of communication opportunity and it is clear that this has a transdisciplinary feature. As it can be understood, from the depths of civilization history to the present, visuality is a part of the activity of directing/managing the masses. It is also obvious that these possibilities have changed according to the visual culture instruments of the age. Like defined above, the individual interacting with the system according to the needs of the age is under the control of cultural relations networks. In this context, McLuhan pays attention in her text Medium is the Messages that the social structure came under the control of the media in the 1960s. Today, it can be said that this situation is beyond what the author claims and that the age of visual culture we live in has absorbed all the components from art to design, from artist to designer, from individual to society, into the system. Thus, a universe picture emerged in which almost all cultural productions turn into fictions that are blessed/glorified in terms of being art and/or design; in this universe built in the possibility of visual culture, visuality, which has a transdisciplinary character, has turned into a kind of communication opportunity.
The Invisible World of Images. From “Nonhuman” to “Undigital” Photography in Joanna Zylinska’s Reflections

Abstract:The article presents the theoretical views and, to a lesser extent, artistic practices of Joanna Zylinska, who in her artistic activity combines epistemological strategies of a researcher and theorist with her activities in the field of art. She develops in different manners an original project of philosophy as photography, or photography as a form of philosophizing. Posthumanist and post-anthropocentric inspirations and the inclusion of her reflections in a wider circle of a nonhuman turn constitute an epistemological framework of numerous statements devoted to the “photographic condition” in the age of dominance of digital technologies. The author argues that, in fact, photography has been a nonhuman practice since its beginnings, which is developed in her book Nonhuman Photography, preceded by the concepts of mediation and photomediation. In her latest proposals addressing the issues of the functioning of art in the era of algorithmic systems, the author develops the concept of undigital photography, which constitutes an extension of thinking about those manifestations of photography that are not of/by/for the human. The idea of “vision machines” (once proposed by Paul Virilio) takes the form of a holistic view of photography as a “medium of life,” which, unlike modernist descriptions of it as a “medium of death” (Roland Barthes), makes a significant contribution to both the theory and the history of photography. The synthetic presentation of Zylinska’s concepts is an attempt to describe and interpret the contemporary state of theoretical and methodological awareness in the field of contemporary image studies. It stems from the need to constantly reinterpret the canon of thinking about the medium of photography in the epoch of cooperation between human and non-human agencies in the area of pictorial production of images addressed to both people and machines.

Abstract:Procedemos com uma avaliação da atitude que consiste em lançar mão das imagens enquanto expediente cognitivo pedagogicamente relevante para o ensino das ciências. Argumentamos que os ensinos das diversas ciências empíricas requerem, ou podem requerer, diferentes graus de abstração. Isso é verdadeiro até mesmo no seio de uma mesma ciência quando confrontamos dois ou mais de seus ramos. Sobre a questão de uma imagem, até mesmo uma imagem consolidada em um dado ramo de uma dada ciência, pode ou não se constituir em obstáculo epistemológico em algum outro de seus ramos, diríamos que a complexidade da questão não comporta uma resposta que seja universalmente inequívoca. Argumentamos que a mente humana é capaz de acomodar duas ou mais representações paradigmáticas - quer sejam verbais, imagéticas ou híbridas - ainda que essas ensejem controvérsias. A posição extrema de Dirac que consiste na recomendação de se evitar imagens, no campo da mecânica quântica, é confrontada com as atitudes de duas cientistas de épocas distintas no campo das ciências da vida, Graziela Barroso e Maria Merian. Concluímos que a atitude que consiste em se lançar mão de imagens, não constitui obstáculo epistemológico algum, quando a compreensão é legitimamente perseguida no ensino das ciências. The verbal and imagery combination as a pedagogical expedient for approaches to the legacies of Graziela Barroso and Maria Merian ABSTRACT We carried out an evaluation of the attitude that consists of using images as a pedagogically relevant cognitive tool for science teaching. We argue that the teachings of the various empirical sciences require, or may require, different degrees of abstraction. This is true even within the same science when we confront two or more of its branches. On the question of an image, even an image consolidated within a given branch of a given science, may or may not constitute an epistemological obstacle in some other of its branches, we would say that the complexity of the question does not give rise to a response that is universally unequivocal. We argue that the human mind can accommodate two or more paradigmatic representations - whether verbal, imagery, or hybrid - even if these give rise to controversy. Dirac’s extreme position, which consists of the recommendation to avoid images, in the field of quantum mechanics, is confronted with the attitudes of two scientists from different eras in the field of life sciences, Graziela Barroso and Maria Merian. We conclude that the attitude that consists of making use of images does not constitute any epistemological obstacle when understanding is legitimately pursued in science teaching.

Here, the author analyzes a device called the “slam freezer” that quick-freezes neurons to be studied under the microscope. Employing insights from Don Ihde’s philosophy of technology, work that carefully amalgamates continental philosophy with philosophy of science, the author draws out the practices of interpretation in slam-freezing research. This interdisciplinary approach to understanding scientific methodology sets the stage for further philosophical investigation of research in neuroscience.
Phenomenological understanding of technology by M. Heidegger (on the material of the article “The Question Concerning Technology”)

Abstract:The article discusses one of the most famous works of M. Heidegger “The Question Concerning Technology”. Difficulties in understanding the theoretical provisions of this article are noted, and the task is to “disenchant” these provisions. In this regard, the main principles of phenomenological thinking are discussed: historicity, vitality, non-premises, orientation of consciousness to objectivity, etc. A reconstruction of the process of building the beginning of the essence of technology, based on these principles and Heidegger’s background, is proposed. Such a beginning includes the process of bringing the unhidden into openness, which is concretized at two levels – ancient culture and modernity. The author notes the connection of this construction with the Heideggerian category of being. It analyzes how, on the basis of the constructed beginning, Heidegger introduces the concept of technology as a “setup” and outlines the way to resolve the problem of the power of technology. As a free being, a person can think through what is happening, understand his essence as a person and, perhaps, find a way out of the danger that threatens him. The story of the setting suggests a way out: one of the essential aspects of ancient technology is poetry, art; will it not be possible to save ourselves by resuming the poiesis of technology at a new level? The author sketches out his ideas about technology, and also lists its main types: technology as the manufacture of tools, as magic, as engineering, as technology, as a technical environment, as a living techno-social planetary organism (Internet). The article ends with the author’s comments, including a discussion of some limitations of Heidegger’s approach and an indication of the whole (culture, sociality, technogenic civilization), the analysis of which, in the author’s opinion, should allow a more comprehensive understanding of technology.
