Abstract:Alcoholysis and hydrolysis of NaBH4 to produce H2 offer attractive routes to sustainable development with high energy density and environmentally-friendly features. However, the productivity is often limited by the increased alkalinity of the reaction system and the deactivation of catalysts. Here, we present a novel strategy of constructing a polyol/water composite system to promote catalyst free alcoholysis of NaBH4 while inhibiting the ionization of reaction products. The polyol/water system exhibits a NaBH4 conversion of more than 90% in less than 60 min, especially when the erythritol/water system is employed with a conversion of 96% in 80 min. Further study shows that erythritol participates in the reaction and the ionization of reaction products is inhibited by erythritol. Moreover, the analysis of reaction products and control group results reveal that erythritol indeed inhibits the basicity enhancement of the reaction system via reacting with NaB(OH)4. By adjusting the volume of water in the polyol/water system, a quasi-solid phase reaction system is developed for practical applications, which shows an excellent NaBH4 conversion of 94% and high hydrogen storage gravimetric density of 3.9 wt%.

Abstract:Photoreforming of bio-derived liquids is anattractive approach toward sustainable H-2 production. Although a large number of bio-liquids are thermodynamically feasible for photocatalytic hydrogen production, few of them have been involved in this process due to their water insoluble nature. To achieve and promote the efficiency of photoreforming hydrogen production in bio-derived biphasic system, the Pickering interfacial catalysis was established over an amphiphilic Ag2O-TiO2/SiO2 catalyst. In this case, the Ag2O-TiO2/SiO2 sample was synthesized by means of an electrostatic self-assembly method by surface charge regulation of SiO2 and the surface hydrophobic modification of Ag2O-TiO2/SiO2 particles using a Pickering emulsion method. As shown in the results, the amphiphilic Ag2O-TiO2/SiO2 particles were observed to successfully stabilize the bio-octanol/water emulsion. Even the complex structure and surface modification slightly reduce the light absorption efficiency and specific surface area of the catalyst, the hydrogen yield was greatly promoted over Ag2O-TiO2/SiO(2 )compared to that of bare TiO2, Ag2O-TiO2 and TiO2/SiO2. It was also discovered that the cyclic hydrogen production performance can be improved by simple re-emulsification. The effect of bio-octanol concentration for photoreforming was studied by a Langmuir-Hinshelwood-type kinetic model, and the reaction rate constant and biooctanol adsorption constant were obtained. This study shows that photocatalyst after effective surface amphiphilic modification could provide a prospective approach for the hydrogen production from a bio-derived oil/ water biphasic system under solar light.

Promotion of biomass pyrolytic saccharification and lignin depolymerization via nucleophilic reagents quenching of the carbonium ions

Abstract:The condensation of lignin under acidic conditions inhibited the subsequent value-added utilization of lignin, and the condensed lignin covered the biomass surface. Here, a method of benzenesulfonic acid pretreatment combined with nucleophilic reagents promoted pyrolytic saccharification and lignin hydrogenation was reported. The anhydrosugar content in the pyrolysis bio-oil increased from 66.91% to 69.00%, 72.88%, and 72.16% via adding methanol, propionaldehyde, 3-hydroxylic-2-naphthoic acid, respectively. The characterization of the biomass surface structure and the calculation of bond lengths indicated that carbonium ions prefer to bind with the added nucleophilic reagent rather than the lignin fragment. Furthermore, the quenching of the carbonium ions preserved the β-O-4 bond, as demonstrated in 2D NMR. In the subsequent hydrogenation reaction, it was found that methanol facilitated the production of lignin monomer. The calculation also revealed that the quenching of the carbonium ions with methanol reduced the bond-breaking energy of the β-O-4 bond.
Promoted hydrolysis performances and mechanism of Si-NaBH4-AlCl3 in deionized water

Abstract:Si-based hydrolysis material system can be used in mobile/portable hydrogen source applications connected to fuel cells but is limited by alkaline solutions. In the present research, we reported an acid/alkaline free hydrolysis system combining silicon with NaBH4. Samples with different ratios between Si and NaBH4 are prepared via high energy ball milling and hydrolyzed in deionized water at different temperatures. Synergetic effect between silicon and NaBH4 was found in the hydrolysis process. 2Si-NaBH4 sample displays the best hydrolysis performances with the hydrogen yield of 1594 ml⋅g−1 in deionized water at 70 °C. Thereafter, AlCl3 is added into the 2Si-NaBH4 sample to further improve its comprehensive properties. The effect of AlCl3 content and promotion mechanism of the reaction are explored. 2Si-NaBH4–5 wt% AlCl3 sample shows a significant improvement with a high hydrogen yield of 1689 ml·g−1 in deionized water at 70 °C and a corresponding conversion rate of 95.8%, indicating that the Si-NaBH4-AlCl3 composite is promising to be a hydrogen source in applications of mobile/portable fuel-cell-powered facilities.

Abstract:We demonstrate an effective and selective conversion of biomass-derived furfural (FAL) to 1,5-pentanediol with high yields through a water-mediated hydrogenolysis process under mild reaction conditions (45 °C, aqueous media). A novel alumina-supported platinum catalyst (2O3) with high-loading and uniform distribution of Pt nanoparticles is prepared through in situ synthesis of Pt-embedded metal-organic frameworks (i.e., MIL-53(Al)-NH2). As a typical example, a high yield of 75.2% 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PD) can be achieved from FAL conversion. A possible reaction mechanism is proposed based on the experimental and computational findings, including XPS analysis, kinetic studies, acidity measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The high effectiveness of the proposed system is attributed to (1) the strong metal support interaction (SMSI) between Pt and penta-coordination aluminum, and (2) the synergistic effect of Brønsted acidic alumina support and the presence of NaBO2. Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) acts as both a hydrogen donor and a precursor for sodium metaborate (NaBO2), which results in an exclusive FAL to 1,5-PD (i.e., no 1,2-pentanediol) by regulating the water-mediated hydrogenolysis pathway as revealed by experiments and DFT calculations. The reaction strategy proposed in this study has also manifested remarkable versatility for a wide range of furan derivatives.

Abstract:Neutral electrochemical water splitting is an environmentally benign method to obtain hydrogen directly from water, which is highly desired but still in challenge since hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under neutral condition suffers from sluggish kinetics. In this work, a novel 10 %wt Ir/W18O49 nanowire catalyst was developed to enhance the performance of HER under neutral medium by using tungsten oxide as support. It is found that tungsten oxide support endows better electron transfer capability contributing to faster kinetics, and more importantly tungsten oxide could effectively accelerate dissociation of the water molecule step promoting Volmer step to favor the subsequent reaction on Ir active sites. Consequently, enhanced activity with overpotential of 83 mV at 10 mA cm−2 was achieved for neutral HER. Meanwhile, an interesting “proton container” property was found in the tungsten oxide support, which could release protons at the beginning of reaction to enable HER via acidic pathway achieving improved performance.

Abstract:Aminoxyl radicals electrocatalysis presents a sustainable method for oxidizing alcohols into high‐value products. Nonetheless, the requirement for high doses of aminoxyl radicals diminishes product purity and economic viability. This study synthesized methylimidazole‐functionalized 4‐acetylamino‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl derivative (MIAcNH‐TEMPO) with a strongly electron‐withdrawing imidazole group and combined it with bioinspired nickel‐supported carbonaceous octopus tentacles for effective electrooxidation of alcohols, achieving high current density of 200 mA cm−2, selectivity of 99%, and turnover frequency of 26,490 h−1. In situ experiments and theoretical calculations indicated that the synergistic effect of Ni‐3dxz orbitals on the tentacle surface interacting with the π orbitals of MIAcNH‐TEMPO creates a strong d–π interaction, which effectively facilitating the creation of a locally intermediate‐enriched microenvironment, decreased the required quantity of aminoxyl radicals. Moreover, the high aqueous solubility of MIAcNH‐TEMPO reduces the difficulty of separation process. Scale‐up experiments conducted in a continuous flow electrolyzer showcased the potential of this strategy for practical applications.

Abstract:Ionic liquid combined with metal species is considered as a promising catalytic system for biomass liquefaction, which complies with the requirement of green chemistry and promotes utilization of biomass resources. The catalytic systems containing imidazolium-based ionic liquids and nickel chloride were applied to the hydro-liquefaction of major biomass constituents (cellulose, xylan and lignin) in this work. The anion type in ionic liquid played a vital role in the liquefaction of feedstock. The results indicated that the maximum conversion and bio-oil yield were achieved in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([BMIM]Br)/NiCl2 system, which was attributed to the strong nucleophile and coordinating capacity of bromide ion. The ionic liquid-based catalyst was more effective in the conversion of cellulose and xylan, due to their high reactivity. Additionally, the ionic liquid-based catalyst facilitated the thermal degradation of feedstocks and intermediates, resulting in the increased content of organics with the smaller molecular sizes. The deoxy-hydrogenation reaction was enhanced over ionic liquid-based catalyst, improving the quality of the resulting bio-oils.

Abstract:We reported an inexpensive and high-efficiency hydrogen generation method from NaBH4 hydrolysis promoted by oxalic acid. NaBH4 and H2C2O4 were premixed and hydrogen generation was initiated by adding water into the solid mixture. H2C2O4 was selected as the acid promotor due to its solid state and low mass per proton. The effect of reactant ratio on the hydrogen yield and hydrogen storage density was investigated. With optimized reactant ratio, high gravimetric hydrogen storage up to 4.4wt% based on all the reactants can be achieved with excellent hydrogen generation kinetics.

Abstract:Bio-ethanol produced from biomass has been regarded as a promising feedstock for producing higher alcohols (C 4+ alcohols) through the Guerbet route. Nevertheless, the high-efficiency upgrading of bio-ethanol is driven by the current disadvantage of low selectivity to C 6+ alcohols. Herein, we designed and synthesized an amphiphilic , which was composed of NiSn nanoparticles (NPs) coated with carbon shell and MgO nanoflakes support. Detailed experiments reveal that the amphiphilic catalyst can stabilize emulsions and facilitate the cross-coupling of ethanol and C 4+ alcohols (generated by ethanol self-condensation) to generate C 6+ alcohols in aqueous ethanol upgrading. Furthermore, the carbonization temperature has a great influence on the structure of , thus greatly affecting the catalyst performance. Consequently, the optimal displays an excellent activity with ethanol conversion of 73.3 %, the selectivities of C 6+ alcohols and C 8+ alcohols in liquid products also reach up to 60.9 % and 32.5 %, respectively. This present strategy provides an efficient strategy for the direct upgrading of water-containing bio-ethanol to desired biofuel components, which may promote the fundamental researches on the production of biorefineries and green fuels.

Abstract:Electrochemical alkynol semi-hydrogenation has emerged as a sustainable and environmentally benign route for the production of high-value alkenols, featuring water as the hydrogen source instead of H2. It is highly challenging to design the electrode-electrolyte interface with efficient electrocatalysts and their matched electrolytes to break the selectivity-activity stereotype. Here, boron-doped Pd catalysts (PdB) and surfactant-modified interface are proposed to enable the simultaneous increase in alkenol selectivity and alkynol conversion. Typically, compared to pure Pd and commercial Pd/C catalysts, the PdB catalyst achieves both higher turnover frequency (139.8 h-1) and specific selectivity (above 90%) for the semi-hydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY). Quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants that are employed as electrolyte additives are assembled at the electrified interface in response to applied bias potential, establishing an interfacial microenvironment that can facilitate alkynol transfer and hinder water transfer suitably. Eventually the hydrogen evolution reaction is inhibited and alkynol semi-hydrogenation is promoted, without inducing the decrease of alkenol selectivity. This work offers a distinct perspective on creating a suitable electrode-electrolyte interface for electrosynthesis.

Boosting Hydrogen Evolution Activities by Strong Interfacial Electronic Interaction in ZnO@Bi(NO3)3 Core–Shell Structures

Abstract:Base-free hydrogen evolution from formaldehyde solution represents one of the most important reactions in the fuel cell based hydrogen economy. However, limited progresses have been made in the rational design of cheap and efficient heterogeneous catalysts for this reaction. Here, we for the first time propose a Lewis acid-base combination strategy to design efficient heterogeneous catalysts for HER from HCHO/H2O. By utilizing the Lewis acid/base properties of Bi(NO3)(3)center dot 5H(2)O/ZnO, we successfully fabricated core-shell structured ZnO@Bi(NO3)(3) composites. A strong interfacial electronic interaction between ZnO and Bi(NO3)(3)center dot 5H(2)O is evidenced by the unprecedented 3.3 eV upshift of Zn 2p and 0.5 eV downshift of Bi 4f, which boosts the HER activities of inert ZnO and Bi(NO3)(3)center dot 5H(2)O. Destroying the interfacial electronic interaction leads to a fast deactivation while increasing interfacial sites proportionally enhances the activity, indicating that interfacial sites are real active sites. DFT calculations confirm that ZnO@Bi(NO3)(3) composites greatly lower the activation barrier of H-2 formation from two adsorbed H atoms and thus promote the H-2 production. The Lewis acid-base combination strategy also applies to the TiO2@Bi(NO3)(3) system, further highlighting the importance of salt-metal oxide interface in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The non-classical anodic H 2 production from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is very appealing for energy-saving H 2 production with value-added chemical conversion due to the low working potential (~0.1 V vs RHE). However, the reaction mechanism is still not clear due to the lack of direct evidence for the critical intermediates. Herein, the detailed mechanisms are explored in-depth using in situ Raman and Infrared spectroscopy, isotope tracking, and density functional theory calculations. The HMF is observed to form two unique inter-convertible ge m -diol intermediates in an alkaline medium: 5-(Dihydroxymethyl)furan-2-methanol anion (DHMFM − ) and dianion (DHMFM 2− ). The DHMFM 2− is easily oxidized to produce H 2 via H − transfer, whereas the DHMFM − is readily oxidized to produce H 2 O via H + transfer. The increases in potential considerably facilitate the DHMFM − oxidation rate, shifting the DHMFM − ↔ DHMFM 2− equilibrium towards DHMFM − and therefore diminishing anodic H 2 production until it terminates. This work captures the critical intermediate DHMFM 2− leading to hydrogen production from aldehyde, unraveling a key point for designing higher performing systems.

Abstract:A set of heteropolyacid-based ionic heterogeneous catalysts ((m)) have been synthesized by intercalated heteropolyanions in ionic liquid (IL)-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) via amino-protonation and/or anion-exchange reaction. This immobilization method offered improved dispersity, accessibility and stability of active sites. The amphipathic nature of IL-GO sheets and porosity of (m) are beneficial to reducing mass transfer limitation in a water/organic substrate two-phase system. Then, these obtained hybrids were employed as efficient and robust catalysts for the selective oxidation of alcohols into carbonyl compounds using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant under organic solvent-free condition. As expected, (m) catalysts showed even much better activity than the corresponding homogeneous HPW (phosphotungstic acid) catalyst. Particularly, (1.5) gave a benzyl alcohol conversion of 94% and benzaldehyde chemoselectivity of 91%. Moreover, owing to the heterogeneous nature and strong cation–anion interactions between cationic supporter and PW anions, the as-prepared catalyst presented advantages of convenient recovery, simple preparation and steady reuse, further providing the industrial application potential in sustainable oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Herein, we presented a bifunctional photocatalytic system for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) valorization over Ni(OH)2-modified ZnIn2S4. Instead of forming 2,5-diformylfuran C6 products from conventional HMF aerobic oxidation, C-C coupling C12 products and H2 were produced in anaerobic water, which can be an important liquid fuel intermediate and gaseous energy carrier, respectively. This work could spark more insight for biomass utilization.

Abstract:Aminoxyl‐mediated electrocatalysis offers a sustainable approach for the oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids. However, the high dosage of aminoxyl radicals and the limiting current density hinder the practicality of industrial application. Herein, a nickel‐based electrocatalyst (Ni‐tpdc) was synthesized on a three‐dimensional porous graphite felt substrate. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of the electrochemically activated Ni‐tpdc/GF electrocatalyst with 4‐acetamido‐TEMPO, the yield of 4‐pyridinecarboxylic acid was up to 99% with only 1 mol% ACT. A series of in situ measurements showed that NiOOH enhanced the activity of the intrinsic electrocatalyst. In addition, the synergistic system was extended to the oxidation of various heterocyclic alcohols. The scale‐up synthesis of chiral acid (LEV‐CO2H) was achieved in an improved electrolyzer with a yield of 95.4%, enantiomeric retention of 99.2%, and space–time yield of 34.12 kg/m3 h. The practicality and effectiveness of this synergistic electrocatalytic strategy in practical electrosynthesis was further demonstrated.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) suffers from sluggish kinetics and results in the increasing cost of hydrogen production. The exploration of an appropriate anode organic reaction occurring at low potential represents a feasible strategy to accelerate the implementation of water splitting in practice. Herein, we develop a ligand-confining thermolysis strategy to fabricate a Ru single-atom catalyst (Ru-SA/NSC) on N,S-codoped carbon. The adsorption mode effects of substrate alcohols on the electrocatalytic oxidation of Ru-SA/NSC are unraveled through modulation of substituent groups. The horizontal adsorption through the O atom on Ru-SA/NSC significantly facilitates the benzyl alcohol oxidation, delivering ultralow potential of 0.97 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at 10 mA cm(-2) with high yield (similar to 96%), selectivity (similar to 99%), and Faraday efficiency (similar to 100%) to produce aldehydes. The vertical adsorption through the N atom in pyridine methanol over Ru-SA/NSC has no response to the reaction. Furthermore, in the coupling device of alcohol oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction, hydrogen production with a low potential of 1.21 V at 10 mA cm(-2) is achieved, surpassing that of benchmark Pt/C||IrO2 (1.56 V) and the state-of-the-art reports. This study provides insights into the design of nanocatalysts toward the rational conversion of organic molecules to value-added chemicals and concurrently produces clean energy carriers.

Abstract:Aqueous ethanol upgrading has attracted great attention for producing high-valued higher alcohols. Nevertheless, the chain growth for higher alcohol production involving water–oil biphase reaction, is usually limited by the traditional single-phase (hydrophilic or lipophilic) catalyst, leading to poor selectivity of C6+ alcohols. Herein, we demonstrate that modulating the surface amphipathicity of the active Ni-Sn composite nanoparticles by using hybrid carbon shell and TiO2 support significantly boosted its catalytic performance. A high ethanol conversion of 70.6 % and excellent C6+ alcohols selectivity of 57.5 % was achieved. Deep studies show that the enhanced catalytic performance was mainly originated from the facilitated emulsion catalysis by the amphiphilic NiSn@C-TiO2 catalyst, by which the reaction process from aqueous ethanol self-coupling to intermolecular cross-coupling at the oil/water interface was dramatically accelerate. This work developed a novel emulsion catalyst for water/oil biphase interface catalysis, approaching highly efficient production of high-valued higher alcohols from direct upgrading of aqueous ethanol.
