Abstract:The Eleventh International Conference on Contact Mechanics and Wear of Rail/Wheels Systems, CM2018, was held in Delft, The Netherlands, on 24–27 September 2018. The conference was organised and hosted by TU Delft and was attended by 213 delegates in total, coming from 18 countries, the largest groups being from China, United Kingdom, Sweden, Japan and Australia. Approximately 60% of the delegates were from universities and research institutes whilst the remaining 40% were industry representatives, including infrastructure managers, train operators, maintenance providers, rolling stock manufacturing companies and consultancies. The conference featured 3 keynote lectures, 112 oral presentations and 48 poster presentations.

The circular economy focuses on reusing, recycling, and reducing waste, which turns unwanted by-products into valuable assets. Sustainable chemical processes offer innovative solutions in waste material reclamation and integration into the production chain. These practices not only mitigate waste but also enable resource recovery, turning waste management costs into profits. Repurposing mineral waste reduces mining's environmental impact, lessens new mining needs, and yields economic advantages.

Abstract:The 12th International Conference on Electro-rheological Fluids and Magnetorheological Suspensions (ERMR 2010) took place in Philadelphia, USA, on August 16-20, 2010. The purpose of this Conference was to provide a venue for scientists and engineers to present their findings, identify the thrust areas, and interact in a variety of subjects in the ER and MR materials area. ERMR 2010 comprised a wide range of research topics, including chemical compositions, physical mechanisms, material processing and characterization, device development, theoretical modeling, system integration, and applications. Invited and contributed papers described the cutting edge of research in the area of ER and MR fluids. Highly productive and scientifically stimulating discussions followed the presentations and the state-of-art technology was disseminated. ERMR 2010 included invited speakers, technical presentations, poster presentations, and a student paper competition. A unique feature of the ERMR 2010 is that the comprehensive coverage of research issues ranging from physics to chemistry to engineering applications of ER and MR materials is held in a single session format where all attendees at the conference can attend each and every presentation, whether it be physics or applications. This is done to ensure and enhance interaction between scientists and engineers. The sessions in ERMR 2010 were organized based into two Symposia: (a) Materials and (b) Applications. Topics covered in the Materials Symposium included: mechanisms, preparation, and characterization of ER and MR materials. Topics covered in the Applications Symposium included: ER and MR devices, control systems, system integration, and other applications, such as application for energy production and conservation. This structure was implemented in order to enable interaction between attending scientists and engineers in both the Materials Symposium and the Applications Symposium, and to enhance the free flow of ideas, and potential collaborative research opportunities. Abstract:Mineral analysis plays a crucial role in various industries, including mining, geology, and materials science. Traditional mineralogical methods often involve time-consuming manual processes, hindering efficiency and limiting the scale of analysis. This research proposes an integrated approach combining Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) with Automated Mineralogy techniques to revolutionize mineral analysis, offering a more efficient and accurate solution. The integrated system employs advanced imaging technologies, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), to capture high-resolution images and elemental compositions of mineral samples. These data are then processed using AIML algorithms, enabling automated identification and classification of minerals based on their unique morphological and chemical features. The AIML component of the system is trained on a diverse dataset of mineral samples, allowing the model to recognize and differentiate various mineral species with high precision. The automated mineralogy system not only accelerates the analysis process but also reduces the potential for human error, ensuring consistent and reliable results. Furthermore, the integration of AIML facilitates continuous learning and adaptation, enhancing the system's performance over time. The system can handle a wide range of mineralogical complexities, including mixed mineral compositions and subtle variations in crystal structures. Abstract:Long-term and continuous large-scale exploitation has increasingly exhausted shallow metal mineral resources, and deep mining has become inevitable. The current global status of deep mining of metal mineral resources was presented, a series of engineering challenges faced by deep mining were systematically analyzed, and some progress and future innovation focus in key engineering technologies, such as the prediction and prevention of rockburst, cooling techniques, rock support techniques, deep hoisting techniques, and several nontraditional deep mining techniques, were highlighted. Meanwhile, new insights into development strategies of deep mining technology were proposed. The integration of these forward-looking key innovative technologies will form the overall framework of an innovative technology system for the deep mining of metal minerals. This technology system will help to achieve safe, efficient, and green exploitation of deep underground metal mineral resources and ensure the sustainable development of the metal mining industry.

Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics

Abstract:Abstract Recent studies on metamorphic petrology as well as microstructural observations suggest the influence of mechanical effects upon chemically active metamorphic minerals. Thus, the understanding of such a coupling is crucial to describe the dynamics of geomaterials. In this effort, we derive a thermodynamically consistent framework to characterize the evolution of chemically active minerals. We model the metamorphic mineral assemblages as a solid-species solution where the species mass transport and chemical reaction drive the stress generation process. The theoretical foundations of the framework rely on modern continuum mechanics, thermodynamics far from equilibrium, and the phase-field model. We treat the mineral solid solution as a continuum body, and following the Larché and Cahn network model, we define displacement and strain fields. Consequently, we obtain a set of coupled chemo-mechanical equations. We use the aforementioned framework to study single minerals as solid solutions during metamorphism. Furthermore, we emphasise the use of the phase-field framework as a promising tool to model complex multi-physics processes in geoscience. Without loss of generality, we use common physical and chemical parameters found in the geoscience literature to portrait a comprehensive view of the underlying physics. Thereby, we carry out 2D and 3D numerical simulations using material parameters for mineral solid solutions to showcase and verify the chemo-mechanical interactions of mineral solid solutions that undergo spinodal decomposition, chemical reactions, and deformation.
