Abstract:Microcavity exciton polaritons (polaritons) as part-light part-matter quasiparticles, garner significant attention for non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation at elevated temperatures. Recently, halide perovskites have emerged as promising room-temperature polaritonic platforms thanks to their large exciton binding energies and superior optical properties. However, currently, inducing room-temperature non-equilibrium polariton condensation in perovskite microcavities requires optical pulsed excitations with high excitation densities. Herein, we demonstrate continuous-wave optically pumped polariton condensation with an exceptionally low threshold of ~0.6 W cm-2 and a narrow linewidth of ~1 meV. Polariton condensation is unambiguously demonstrated by characterizing the nonlinear behavior and coherence properties. We also identify a microscopic mechanism involving the potential landscape in the perovskite microcavity, where numerous discretized energy levels arising from the hybridization of adjacent potential minima enhance the polariton relaxation, facilitating polariton condensate formation. Our findings lay the foundation for the next-generation energy-efficient polaritonic devices operating at room temperature.

Abstract:Exciton polaritons, with extremely low effective mass<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR1">1</a>, are regarded as promising candidates to realize Bose–Einstein condensation in lattices for quantum simulations<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR2">2</a> towards room-temperature operations<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR8">8</a>. Along with the condensation, an efficient exciton polariton quantum simulator<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR9">9</a> would require a strong lattice with robust polariton trapping as well as strong intersite coupling to allow coherent quantum motion of polaritons within the lattice. A strong lattice can be characterized with a larger forbidden bandgap opening and a larger lattice bandwidth compared with the linewidth. However, exciton polaritons in such strong lattices have only been shown to condense at cryogenic temperatures<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR8">8</a>. Here, we report the observation of non-equilibrium exciton polariton condensation in a one-dimensional strong lead halide perovskite lattice at room temperature. Modulated by deep periodic potentials, the strong lead halide perovskite lattice exhibits a large forbidden bandgap opening up to 13.3 meV and a lattice band up to 8.5 meV wide, which are at least 10 times larger than previous systems. Above a critical density, we observe polariton condensation into py orbital states with long-range spatial coherence at room temperature. Our result opens the route to the implementation of polariton condensates in quantum simulators at room temperature.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors with natural multiquantum well structures and confined 2D excitons are intriguing for the study of strong exciton photon coupling, due to their large exciton binding energy and oscillation strength. This strong coupling leads to a formation of the half-light half-matter bosonic quasiparticle called exciton polariton, consisting of a linear superposition state between photonic and excitonic states. Here, we demonstrate room temperature strong coupling in exfoliated wavelength-tunable 2D organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors embedded into a planar microcavity, exhibiting large energetic splitting-to-line width ratios (>34.2). Angular dependent spectroscopy measurements reveal that hybridized polariton states act as an ultrafast and reversible energy oscillation, involving 2D perovskite exciton, cavity modes (CM), and Bragg modes of the distributed Bragg reflector. Meanwhile, sizable hybrid particles dominantly couple to the measured optical field through the CMs. Our findings advocate a considerable promise of 2D organic inorganic perovskite to explore fundamental quantum phenomena such as Bose Einstein condensation, superfluidity, and exciton polariton networks.

Abstract:In this article, spin‐orbit coupled trapped exciton–polariton condensates are demonstrated in birefringent CsPbBr3 based microcavity. Cascade condensate processes between orthogonally polarized polariton branches (Xx and Xy modes) happen considering the dominance of reservoir exciton–polariton or polariton–polariton scattering within each stage. This trapped anisotropic condensate holds great promise for room‐temperature polaritonic and spintronics. Lead halide perovskites exhibit superior properties compared to classical III–V semiconductor quantum wells for room‐temperature polaritonic applications, particularly owing to the significant crystalline anisotropy. This anisotropy results in a sizeable split in condensate energy, which can profoundly influence polariton interactions and spin relaxation pathways. Besides, trapped exciton‐polariton (TEP) exhibits a quantized energy landscape, which is essential for modulating polaritonic logical circuits. Herein, spin‐orbit coupled TEP lasing is demonstrated in birefringent perovskite. Cascade condensate processes between orthogonally polarized polariton branches happen considering the dominance of reservoir exciton–polariton or polariton–polariton scattering within each stage. Such condensation adequately is verified via the input‐output "S" curve, the narrowed linewidth, the energy blueshift, and the real space spatial coherence of the orthogonally polarized modes. This trapped anisotropic condensate holds great promise for room‐temperature polaritonic and spintronics.

Abstract:Exciton–polariton condensates, due to their nonlinear and coherent characteristics, have been employed to construct spin Hamiltonian lattices for potentially studying spin glass, critical dephasing, and even solving optimization problems. Here, we report the room-temperature polariton condensation and polaritonic soft-spin XY Hamiltonian lattices in an organic–inorganic halide perovskite microcavity. This is achieved through the direct integration of high-quality single-crystal samples within the cavity. The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings in both one- and two-dimensional condensate lattices have been observed clearly. Our work shows a nonlinear organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite platform for future investigations as polariton simulators.

Abstract:Layered 2D halide perovskites are chemically synthesized realizations of quantum well stacks with giant exciton oscillator strengths, tunable emission spectra and very large exciton binding energies. While these features render 2D halide perovskites a promising platform for room-temperature polaritonics, bosonic condensation and polariton lasing in 2D perovskites have so far remained elusive at ambient conditions. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature cavity exciton-polariton condensation in mechanically exfoliated crystals of the 2D Ruddlesden-Popper iodide perovskite $(BA)_{2}(MA)_{2}Pb_{3}I_{10}$ in an open optical microcavity. We observe a polariton condensation threshold of $P_{th}=6.76 fJ$ per pulse and detect a strong non-linear response. Interferometric measurements confirm the spontaneous emergence of spatial coherence across the condensate with an associated first-order autocorrelation reaching $g^{(1)}\approx 0.6$. Our results lay the foundation for a new class of room-temperature polariton lasers based on 2D halide perovskites with great potential for hetero-integration with other van-der-Waals materials and combination with photonic crystals or waveguides.

Abstract:Polariton lasing is the coherent emission arising from a macroscopic polariton condensate first proposed in 1996. Over the past two decades, polariton lasing has been demonstrated in a few inorganic and organic semiconductors in both low and room temperatures. Polariton lasing in inorganic materials significantly relies on sophisticated epitaxial growth of crystalline gain medium layers sandwiched by two distributed Bragg reflectors in which combating the built-in strain and mismatched thermal properties is nontrivial. On the other hand, organic active media usually suffer from large threshold density and weak nonlinearity due to the Frenkel exciton nature. Further development of polariton lasing toward technologically significant applications demand more accessible materials, ease of device fabrication, and broadly tunable emission at room temperature. Herein, we report the experimental realization of room-temperature polariton lasing based on an epitaxy-free all-inorganic cesium lead chloride perovskite nanoplatelet microcavity. Polariton lasing is unambiguously evidenced by a superlinear power dependence, macroscopic ground-state occupation, blueshift of the ground-state emission, narrowing of the line width and the buildup of long-range spatial coherence. Our work suggests considerable promise of lead halide perovskites toward large-area, low-cost, high-performance room-temperature polariton devices and coherent light sources extending from the ultraviolet to near-infrared range.

Abstract:Quantum fluids exhibit quantum mechanical effects at the macroscopic level, which contrast strongly with classical fluids. Gain-dissipative solid-state exciton-polaritons systems are promising emulation platforms for complex quantum fluid studies at elevated temperatures. Recently, halide perovskite polariton systems have emerged as materials with distinctive advantages over other room-temperature systems for future studies of topological physics, non-Abelian gauge fields, and spin-orbit interactions. However, the demonstration of nonlinear quantum hydrodynamics, such as superfluidity and Čerenkov flow, which is a consequence of the renormalized elementary excitation spectrum, remains elusive in halide perovskites. Here, using homogenous halide perovskites single crystals, we report, in both one- and two-dimensional cases, the complete set of quantum fluid phase transitions from normal classical fluids to scatterless polariton superfluids and supersonic fluids-all at room temperature, clear consequences of the Landau criterion. Specifically, the supersonic Čerenkov wave pattern was observed at room temperature. The experimental results are also in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions from the dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our results set the stage for exploring the rich non-equilibrium quantum fluid many-body physics at room temperature and also pave the way for important polaritonic device applications.
Trapped Exciton–Polariton Condensate by Spatial Confinement in a Perovskite Microcavity

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites exhibit good performance in room-temperature exciton polariton lasers and efficient flow of polariton condensates. Shaping and directing polariton condensates by confining the potential is essential for polariton-based optoelectronic devices, which have seldom been explored based on perovskite materials. Here, we investigate the trapping of polaritons in micron-sized CsPbBr3 flakes embedded in a microcavity by varying the negative detuning energy (from -36 to -172 meV) at room temperature. The confinement by the crystal edge results in quantized polariton states both below and above the condensed threshold. As the cavity is more negatively detuned (Delta <= -118 meV), the condensed polaritons undergo a transition from the ground state to metastable states with a finite group velocity (similar to 50 mu m/ps at Delta = -118 meV). The metastable polariton condensates can be optically and stably driven between different polariton states by simply changing the pump fluence. The manipulations of the polariton states reveal the effective control of polariton relaxation in quantized polariton states by the underlying exciton-polariton and polariton-polariton scattering. Our findings pave the way for novel polaritonic light sources and integrated polariton devices through the trap engineering of perovskite microcavities.

Abstract:Lead-halide perovskites are generally excellent light emitters and can have larger exciton binding energies than thermal energy at room temperature, exhibiting great promise for room-temperature exciton-polaritonics. Rapid progress has been made recently, although challenges and mysteries remain in lead-halide perovskite semiconductors to push polaritons to room-temperature operation. In this Perspective, we discuss fundamental aspects of perovskite semiconductors for exciton-polaritons and review the recent rapid experimental advances using lead-halide perovskites for room-temperature polaritonics, including the experimental realization of strong light–matter interaction using various types of microcavities as well as reaching the polariton condensation regime in planar microcavities and lattices.

Abstract:Comparing with pure photons, higher nonlinearity in polariton systems has been exploited in various proof-of-principle demonstrations of efficient optical devices based on the parametric scattering effect. However, most of them demand cryogenic temperatures limited by the small exciton binding energy of traditional semiconductors or exhibit weak nonlinearity resulting from Frenkel excitons. Lead halide perovskites, possessing both a large binding energy and a strong polariton interaction, emerge as ideal platforms to explore nonlinear polariton physics toward room temperature operation. Here, we report the first observation of nonlinear parametric scattering in a lead halide perovskite microcavity with multiple polariton branches at room temperature. Driven by the scattering source from condensation in one polariton branch, correlated polariton pairs are obtained at high k states in an adjacent branch. Our results strongly advocate the ability to reach the nonlinear regime essential for perovskite polaritonics working at room temperature.
Spontaneously Coherent Orbital Coupling of Counterrotating Exciton Polaritons in Annular Perovskite Microcavities

Abstract:Exciton-polariton condensation is regarded as a spontaneous macroscopic quantum phenomenon with phase ordering and collective coherence. By engineering artificial annular potential landscapes in halide perovskite semiconductor microcavities, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate the room-temperature spontaneous formation of a coherent superposition of exciton-polariton orbital states with symmetric petal-shaped patterns in real space, resulting from symmetry breaking due to the anisotropic effective potential of the birefringent perovskite crystals. The lobe numbers of such petal-shaped polariton condensates can be precisely controlled by tuning the annular potential geometry. These petal-shaped condensates form in multiple orbital states, carrying locked alternating π phase shifts and vortex–antivortex superposition cores, arising from the coupling of counterrotating exciton-polaritons in the confined circular waveguide. Our geometrically patterned microcavity exhibits promise for realizing room-temperature topological polaritonic devices and optical polaritonic switches based on periodic annular potentials.

Abstract:The exploitation of the strong light-matter coupling regime and exciton-polariton condensates has emerged as a compelling approach to introduce strong interactions and nonlinearities into numerous photonic applications, ranging from low-threshold topological lasers to ultrafast all-optical logic devices. The use of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots with strong three-dimensional confinement as the active material in these microcavities would be highly advantageous due to their versatile structural and compositional tunability and wet-chemical processability, as well as potentially enhanced, confinement-induced polaritonic interactions. Yet, to date, cavity exciton-polariton condensation has neither been achieved with epitaxial nor with colloidal quantum dots. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature polariton condensation in a thin film of monodisperse, colloidal CsPbBr$_3$ quantum dots placed in a tunable optical resonator with a Gaussian-shaped deformation serving as wavelength-scale potential well for the polaritons. The onset of polariton condensation under pulsed optical excitation is manifested in emission by its characteristic superlinear intensity dependence, reduced linewidth, blueshift, and extended temporal coherence. Our results, based on this highly engineerable class of perovskite materials with unique optical properties, pave the way for the development of polaritonic devices for ultrabright coherent light sources and photonic information processing.

Robust Room-Temperature Polariton Condensation and Lasing in Scalable FAPbBr$_3$ Perovskite Microcavities

Abstract:Exciton-polariton condensation in direct bandgap semiconductors strongly coupled to light enables a broad range of fundamental studies and applications like low-threshold and electrically driven lasing. Yet, materials hosting exciton-polariton condensation in ambient conditions are rare, with fabrication protocols that are often inefficient and non-scalable. Here, room-temperature exciton-polariton condensation and lasing is observed in a microcavity with embedded formamidiniumlead bromide (FAPbBr$_3$) perovskite film. This optically active material is spin-coated onto the microcavity mirror, which makes the whole device scalable up to large lateral sizes. The sub-$\mu$m granulation of the polycrystalline FAPbBr$_3$ film allows for observation of polariton lasing in a single quantum-confined mode of a polaritonic 'quantum dot'. Compared to random photon lasing, observed in bare FAPbBr$_3$ films, polariton lasing exhibits a lower threshold, narrower linewidth, and an order of magnitude longer coherence time. Both polariton and random photon lasing are observed under the conditions of pulsed optical pumping, and persist without significant degradation for up to 6 and 17 hours of a continuous experimental run, respectively. This study demonstrates the excellent potential of the FAPbBr$_3$ perovskite as a new material for room-temperature polaritonics, with the added value of efficient and scalable fabrication offered by the solution-based spin-coating process.

Abstract:The semiconductor exciton–polariton, arising from the strong coupling between excitons and confined cavity photon modes, is not only of fundamental importance in macroscopic quantum effects but also has wide application prospects in ultralow‐threshold polariton lasers, slowing‐light devices, and quantum light sources. Very recently, metallic halide perovskites have been considered as a great candidate for exciton–polariton devices owing to their low‐cost fabrication, large exciton oscillator strength, and binding energy. Herein, the latest progress in exciton–polaritons and polariton lasers of perovskites are reviewed. Polaritons in planar and nanowires Fabry–Pérot microcavities are discussed with particular reference to material and photophysics. Finally, a perspective on the remaining challenges in perovskite polaritons research is given.
Multiple Emission Peaks Hinder Polariton Condensation in 2D Perovskite Microcavities

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal halide phases, commonly known as 2D perovskites, have emerged as promising materials for exciton polaritons, particularly for polariton condensation. This process entails the spontaneous accumulation of population in the polariton ground state and relies on efficient energy relaxation. In this class of materials, this relaxation is mediated by exciton reservoir emission, which pumps polariton states through radiative pumping. To achieve strong light-matter coupling and sustain a high polariton density, the material must possess excitations with large oscillator strength and high exciton binding energy. While 2D perovskites exhibit these desirable characteristics, there are no reports of room-temperature polariton condensation and only one successful demonstration at cryogenic temperatures. In this work, we systematically explore the role of energy alignment between the exciton reservoir emission and the lower polariton branch in populating the polariton ground state via radiative pumping. Through cavity detuning, we shift the lower polariton energy minimum to overlap with the emission of the exciton reservoir at different energies. We identify that the multiple radiative pathways of 2D perovskites lead to inefficient radiative pumping of the lower polariton branch at the lowest energy state, ultimately posing challenges for polariton condensation in this class of materials.

Abstract:Abstract Lead-halide perovskites are highly promising for various optoelectronic applications, including laser devices. However, fundamental photophysics explaining the coherent-light emission from this material system is so intricate and often the subject of debate. Here, we systematically investigate photoluminescence properties of all-inorganic perovskite microcavity at room temperature and discuss the excited state and the light–matter coupling regime depending on excitation density. Angle-resolved photoluminescence clearly exhibits that the microcavity system shows a transition from weak coupling regime to strong coupling regime, revealing the increase in correlated electron–hole pairs. With pumping fluence above the threshold, the photoluminescence signal shows a lasing behavior with bosonic condensation characteristics, accompanied by long-range phase coherence. The excitation density required for the lasing behavior, however, is found to exceed the Mott density, excluding the exciton as the excited state. These results demonstrate that the polaritonic Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer state originates the strong coupling formation and the lasing behavior.

Abstract:Exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities generate fascinating effects such as long-range spatial coherence and Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC), which are attractive for their potential use in low threshold lasers, vortices and slowing light, etc. However, currently most of exciton-polariton effects either occur at cryogenic temperature or rely on expensive cavity fabrication procedures. Further exploring new semiconductor microcavities with stronger exciton photon interaction strength is extensively needed. Herein, we demonstrate room temperature photon exciton strong coupling in hybrid inorganic-organic CH3NH3PbBr3 Fabry-Pérot microcavities for the first time. The vacuum Rabi splitting energy is up to ~390 meV, which is ascribed to large oscillator strength and photon confinement in reduced dimension of optical microcavities. With increasing pumping energy, exciton-photon coupling strength is weakened due to carrier screening effect, leading to occurrence of photonic lasing instead of polartion lasing. The demonstrated strong coupling between photons and excitons in perovskite microcavities would be helpful for development of high performance polariton-based incoherent and coherent light sources, nonlinear optics, and slow light applications.

Abstract:Exciton-polaritons resulting from the strong exciton-photon interaction stimulate the development of novel coherent light sources with low threshold, long range spatial, and temporal coherence to circumvent the ever increasing energy demands of optical communications. Polaritons from bound states in the continuum (BICs) are promising for Bose-Einstein condensation owing to their infinite quality factors that enlarge photon lifetimes and benefit polariton accumulations. However, BIC polariton condensation remains limited to cryogenic temperatures ascribed to the small exciton binding energies of conventional material platforms. Herein, we demonstrated a room-temperature BIC polaritonic platform based on halide perovskite air-hole photonic crystals, profiting from the non-radiative BIC states and stable excitons of cesium lead bromide. BIC polariton condensation was achieved near the dispersion minimum that generates directional vortex beam emission with long-range coherence. Our work provides a significant basis for the applications of polariton condensates for integrated photonic and topological circuits.

Abstract:Hybrid perovskites have emerged as a promising material candidate for exciton-polariton (polariton) optoelectronics. Thermodynamically, low-threshold Bose-Einstein condensation requires efficient scattering to the polariton energy dispersion minimum, and many applications demand precise control of polariton interactions. Thus far, the primary mechanisms by which polaritons relax in perovskites remains unclear. In this work, we perform temperature-dependent measurements of polaritons in low-dimensional perovskite wedged microcavities achieving a Rabi splitting of = 260 ± 5 meV. We change the Hopfield coefficients by moving the optical excitation along the cavity wedge and thus tune the strength of the primary polariton relaxation mechanisms in this material. We observe the polariton bottleneck regime and show that it can be overcome by harnessing the interplay between the different excitonic species whose corresponding dynamics are modified by strong coupling. This work provides an understanding of polariton relaxation in perovskites benefiting from efficient, material-specific relaxation pathways and intracavity pumping schemes from thermally brightened excitonic species.
