Abstract:Layered 2D halide perovskites are chemically synthesized realizations of quantum well stacks with giant exciton oscillator strengths, tunable emission spectra and very large exciton binding energies. While these features render 2D halide perovskites a promising platform for room-temperature polaritonics, bosonic condensation and polariton lasing in 2D perovskites have so far remained elusive at ambient conditions. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature cavity exciton-polariton condensation in mechanically exfoliated crystals of the 2D Ruddlesden-Popper iodide perovskite $(BA)_{2}(MA)_{2}Pb_{3}I_{10}$ in an open optical microcavity. We observe a polariton condensation threshold of $P_{th}=6.76 fJ$ per pulse and detect a strong non-linear response. Interferometric measurements confirm the spontaneous emergence of spatial coherence across the condensate with an associated first-order autocorrelation reaching $g^{(1)}\approx 0.6$. Our results lay the foundation for a new class of room-temperature polariton lasers based on 2D halide perovskites with great potential for hetero-integration with other van-der-Waals materials and combination with photonic crystals or waveguides.

Abstract:Exciton–polariton condensates, due to their nonlinear and coherent characteristics, have been employed to construct spin Hamiltonian lattices for potentially studying spin glass, critical dephasing, and even solving optimization problems. Here, we report the room-temperature polariton condensation and polaritonic soft-spin XY Hamiltonian lattices in an organic–inorganic halide perovskite microcavity. This is achieved through the direct integration of high-quality single-crystal samples within the cavity. The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings in both one- and two-dimensional condensate lattices have been observed clearly. Our work shows a nonlinear organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite platform for future investigations as polariton simulators.

Abstract:Microcavity exciton polaritons (polaritons) as part-light part-matter quasiparticles, garner significant attention for non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation at elevated temperatures. Recently, halide perovskites have emerged as promising room-temperature polaritonic platforms thanks to their large exciton binding energies and superior optical properties. However, currently, inducing room-temperature non-equilibrium polariton condensation in perovskite microcavities requires optical pulsed excitations with high excitation densities. Herein, we demonstrate continuous-wave optically pumped polariton condensation with an exceptionally low threshold of ~0.6 W cm-2 and a narrow linewidth of ~1 meV. Polariton condensation is unambiguously demonstrated by characterizing the nonlinear behavior and coherence properties. We also identify a microscopic mechanism involving the potential landscape in the perovskite microcavity, where numerous discretized energy levels arising from the hybridization of adjacent potential minima enhance the polariton relaxation, facilitating polariton condensate formation. Our findings lay the foundation for the next-generation energy-efficient polaritonic devices operating at room temperature.

Abstract:Halide perovskites emerged as a revolutionary family of high-quality semiconductors for solar energy harvesting and energy-efficient lighting. There is mounting evidence that the exceptional optoelectronic properties of these materials could stem from unconventional electron-phonon couplings, and it has been suggested that the formation of polarons and self-trapped excitons could be key to understanding such properties. By performing first-principles simulations with unprecedented detail across the length scales, here we show that halide perovskites harbor a uniquely rich variety of polaronic species, including small polarons, large polarons, and charge density waves, and we explain a variety of experimental observations. We find that these emergent quasiparticles support topologically nontrivial phonon fields with quantized topological charge, making them the first non-magnetic analog of the helical Bloch points found in magnetic skyrmion lattices.

Abstract:Exciton polaritons, with extremely low effective mass<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR1">1</a>, are regarded as promising candidates to realize Bose–Einstein condensation in lattices for quantum simulations<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR2">2</a> towards room-temperature operations<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR8">8</a>. Along with the condensation, an efficient exciton polariton quantum simulator<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR9">9</a> would require a strong lattice with robust polariton trapping as well as strong intersite coupling to allow coherent quantum motion of polaritons within the lattice. A strong lattice can be characterized with a larger forbidden bandgap opening and a larger lattice bandwidth compared with the linewidth. However, exciton polaritons in such strong lattices have only been shown to condense at cryogenic temperatures<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-019-0764-5#ref-CR8">8</a>. Here, we report the observation of non-equilibrium exciton polariton condensation in a one-dimensional strong lead halide perovskite lattice at room temperature. Modulated by deep periodic potentials, the strong lead halide perovskite lattice exhibits a large forbidden bandgap opening up to 13.3 meV and a lattice band up to 8.5 meV wide, which are at least 10 times larger than previous systems. Above a critical density, we observe polariton condensation into py orbital states with long-range spatial coherence at room temperature. Our result opens the route to the implementation of polariton condensates in quantum simulators at room temperature.

Abstract:Comparing with pure photons, higher nonlinearity in polariton systems has been exploited in various proof-of-principle demonstrations of efficient optical devices based on the parametric scattering effect. However, most of them demand cryogenic temperatures limited by the small exciton binding energy of traditional semiconductors or exhibit weak nonlinearity resulting from Frenkel excitons. Lead halide perovskites, possessing both a large binding energy and a strong polariton interaction, emerge as ideal platforms to explore nonlinear polariton physics toward room temperature operation. Here, we report the first observation of nonlinear parametric scattering in a lead halide perovskite microcavity with multiple polariton branches at room temperature. Driven by the scattering source from condensation in one polariton branch, correlated polariton pairs are obtained at high k states in an adjacent branch. Our results strongly advocate the ability to reach the nonlinear regime essential for perovskite polaritonics working at room temperature.
Polarization superposition of room-temperature polariton condensation

Abstract:A methodology for forming a qubit state is essential for quantum applications of room temperature polaritons. While polarization degree of freedom is expected as a possible means for this purpose, the coupling of linearly polarized polariton condensed states has been still a challenging issue. In this study, we show a polarization superposition of a polariton condensed states in an all-inorganic perovskite microcavity at room temperature. We realized the energy resonance of the two orthogonally polarized polariton modes with the same number of antinodes by exploiting the blue shift of the polariton condensed state. The polarization coupling between the condensed states results in a polarization switching in the polariton lasing emission. The orthorhombic crystal structure of the perovskite active layer and/or a slight off-axis orientation of the perovskite crystal axis from the normal direction of microcavity plane enable the interaction between the two orthogonally polarized states. These observations demonstrate a great promise of polariton as a room temperature qubit technology.

Abstract:Lead-halide perovskites are generally excellent light emitters and can have larger exciton binding energies than thermal energy at room temperature, exhibiting great promise for room-temperature exciton-polaritonics. Rapid progress has been made recently, although challenges and mysteries remain in lead-halide perovskite semiconductors to push polaritons to room-temperature operation. In this Perspective, we discuss fundamental aspects of perovskite semiconductors for exciton-polaritons and review the recent rapid experimental advances using lead-halide perovskites for room-temperature polaritonics, including the experimental realization of strong light–matter interaction using various types of microcavities as well as reaching the polariton condensation regime in planar microcavities and lattices.

Abstract:Exciton-polaritons resulting from the strong exciton-photon interaction stimulate the development of novel coherent light sources with low threshold, long range spatial, and temporal coherence to circumvent the ever increasing energy demands of optical communications. Polaritons from bound states in the continuum (BICs) are promising for Bose-Einstein condensation owing to their infinite quality factors that enlarge photon lifetimes and benefit polariton accumulations. However, BIC polariton condensation remains limited to cryogenic temperatures ascribed to the small exciton binding energies of conventional material platforms. Herein, we demonstrated a room-temperature BIC polaritonic platform based on halide perovskite air-hole photonic crystals, profiting from the non-radiative BIC states and stable excitons of cesium lead bromide. BIC polariton condensation was achieved near the dispersion minimum that generates directional vortex beam emission with long-range coherence. Our work provides a significant basis for the applications of polariton condensates for integrated photonic and topological circuits.

Abstract:The exploitation of the strong light-matter coupling regime and exciton-polariton condensates has emerged as a compelling approach to introduce strong interactions and nonlinearities into numerous photonic applications, ranging from low-threshold topological lasers to ultrafast all-optical logic devices. The use of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots with strong three-dimensional confinement as the active material in these microcavities would be highly advantageous due to their versatile structural and compositional tunability and wet-chemical processability, as well as potentially enhanced, confinement-induced polaritonic interactions. Yet, to date, cavity exciton-polariton condensation has neither been achieved with epitaxial nor with colloidal quantum dots. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature polariton condensation in a thin film of monodisperse, colloidal CsPbBr$_3$ quantum dots placed in a tunable optical resonator with a Gaussian-shaped deformation serving as wavelength-scale potential well for the polaritons. The onset of polariton condensation under pulsed optical excitation is manifested in emission by its characteristic superlinear intensity dependence, reduced linewidth, blueshift, and extended temporal coherence. Our results, based on this highly engineerable class of perovskite materials with unique optical properties, pave the way for the development of polaritonic devices for ultrabright coherent light sources and photonic information processing.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors with natural multiquantum well structures and confined 2D excitons are intriguing for the study of strong exciton photon coupling, due to their large exciton binding energy and oscillation strength. This strong coupling leads to a formation of the half-light half-matter bosonic quasiparticle called exciton polariton, consisting of a linear superposition state between photonic and excitonic states. Here, we demonstrate room temperature strong coupling in exfoliated wavelength-tunable 2D organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors embedded into a planar microcavity, exhibiting large energetic splitting-to-line width ratios (>34.2). Angular dependent spectroscopy measurements reveal that hybridized polariton states act as an ultrafast and reversible energy oscillation, involving 2D perovskite exciton, cavity modes (CM), and Bragg modes of the distributed Bragg reflector. Meanwhile, sizable hybrid particles dominantly couple to the measured optical field through the CMs. Our findings advocate a considerable promise of 2D organic inorganic perovskite to explore fundamental quantum phenomena such as Bose Einstein condensation, superfluidity, and exciton polariton networks.

Abstract:Hybrid halide perovskites are now considered as low-cost materials for contemporary research in photovoltaics and nanophotonics. In particular, because these materials can be solution processed, they represent a great hope for obtaining low-cost devices. While the potential of 2D layered hybrid perovskites for polaritonic devices operating at room temperature has been demonstrated in the past, the potential of the 3D perovskites has been much less explored for this particular application. Here, we report the strong exciton-photon coupling with 3D bromide hybrid perovskite. Cavity polaritons are experimentallly demonstrated from both reflectivity and photoluminescence experiments, at room temperature, in a 3$\lambda$/2 planar microcavity containing a large surface spin-coated $CH_3NH_3PbBr_3$ thin film. A microcavity quality factor of 92 was found and a large Rabi splitting of 70 meV was measured. This result paves the way to low-cost polaritonic devices operating at room temperature, potentially electrically injectable as 3D hybrid perovskites present good transport properties.

Abstract:Spin or valley degrees of freedom in condensed matter have been proposed as efficient information carriers towards next generation spintronics. It is therefore crucial to develop effective strategies to generate and control spin or valley-locked spin currents, e.g., by exploiting the spin Hall or valley Hall effects. However, the scattering, and rapid dephasing of electrons pose major challenges to achieve macroscopic coherent spin currents and realistic spintronic or valleytronic devices, specifically at room temperature, where strong thermal fluctuations could further obscure the spin flow. Exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities being the quantum superposition of excitons and photons, are believed to be promising platforms for spin-dependent optoelectronic or, in short, spin-optronic devices. Long-range spin current flows of exciton polaritons may be controlled through the optical spin Hall effect. However, this effect could neither be unequivocally observed at room temperature nor be exploited for realistic polariton spintronic devices due to the presence of strong thermal fluctuations or large linear spin splittings. Here, we report the observation of room temperature optical spin Hall effect of exciton polaritons with the spin current flow over a distance as large as 60 um in a hybrid organic-inorganic FAPbBr3 perovskite microcavity. We show direct evidence of the long-range coherence at room temperature in the flow of exciton polaritons, and the spin current carried by them. By harnessing the long-range spin-Hall transport of exciton polaritons, we have demonstrated two novel room temperature polaritonic devices, namely the NOT gate and the spin-polarized beam splitter, advancing the frontier of room-temperature polaritonics in perovskite microcavities.

Abstract:Strong light-matter interaction enriches topological photonics by dressing light with matter, which provides the possibility to realize tuneable topological devices with immunity to defects. Topological exciton polaritons, half-light half-matter quasiparticles with giant optical nonlinearity represent a unique platform for active topological photonics with phase tunability. Previous demonstrations of exciton polariton topological insulators still demand cryogenic temperatures and their topological properties are usually fixed without phase tunability. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a room-temperature exciton polariton topological insulator with active phase tunability in a perovskite zigzag lattice. Polarization serves as a degree of freedom to control the reversible transition between distinct topological phases, thanks to the polarization-dependent anisotropy in halide perovskite microcavities. The topologically nontrivial polariton states localized in the edges persist in the presence of a natural defect, showing strong immunity to disorder. We further demonstrate that exciton polaritons can condense into the topological edge states under optical pumping. These results provide an ideal platform for realizing tuneable topological polaritonic devices with room-temperature operation, which can find important applications in optical control, modulation and switching.
Observation of perovskite topological valley exciton-polaritons at room temperature

Abstract:Topological exciton-polaritons are a burgeoning class of topological photonic systems distinguished by their hybrid nature as part-light, part-matter quasiparticles. Their further control over novel valley degree of freedom (DOF) has offered considerable potential for developing active topological optical devices towards information processing. However, the experimental demonstration of propagating topological exciton-polaritons with valley DOF remains elusive at room temperature. Here, employing a two-dimensional (2D) valley-Hall perovskite lattice, we report the experimental observation of valley-polarized topological exciton-polaritons and their valley-dependent propagations at room temperature. The 2D valley-Hall perovskite lattice consists of two mutually inverted honeycomb lattices with broken inversion symmetry. By measuring their band structure with angle-resolved photoluminescence spectra, we experimentally verify the existence of valley-polarized polaritonic topological kink states with a large gap opening of ~ 9 meV in the bearded interface at room temperature. Moreover, these valley-polarized states exhibit counter-propagating behaviors under a resonant excitation at room temperature. Our results not only expand the landscape of realizing topological exciton-polaritons, but also pave the way for the development of topological valleytronic devices employing exciton-polaritons with valley DOF at room temperature

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal halide phases, commonly known as 2D perovskites, have emerged as promising materials for exciton polaritons, particularly for polariton condensation. This process entails the spontaneous accumulation of population in the polariton ground state and relies on efficient energy relaxation. In this class of materials, this relaxation is mediated by exciton reservoir emission, which pumps polariton states through radiative pumping. To achieve strong light-matter coupling and sustain a high polariton density, the material must possess excitations with large oscillator strength and high exciton binding energy. While 2D perovskites exhibit these desirable characteristics, there are no reports of room-temperature polariton condensation and only one successful demonstration at cryogenic temperatures. In this work, we systematically explore the role of energy alignment between the exciton reservoir emission and the lower polariton branch in populating the polariton ground state via radiative pumping. Through cavity detuning, we shift the lower polariton energy minimum to overlap with the emission of the exciton reservoir at different energies. We identify that the multiple radiative pathways of 2D perovskites lead to inefficient radiative pumping of the lower polariton branch at the lowest energy state, ultimately posing challenges for polariton condensation in this class of materials.

Abstract:A photonic topological insulator features robust directional propagation and immunity to defect perturbations of the edge/surface state. Exciton-polaritons, that is, the hybrid quasiparticles of excitons and photons in semiconductor microcavities, have been proposed as a tunable nonlinear platform for emulating topological phenomena. However, mainly due to excitonic material limitations, experimental observations so far have not been able to enter the nonlinear condensation regime or only show localized condensation in one dimension. Here we show a topological propagating edge state with polariton condensation at room temperature and without any external magnetic field. We overcome material limitations by using excitonic CsPbCl 3 halide perovskites with a valley Hall lattice design. The polariton lattice features a large bandgap of 18.8 meV and exhibits strong nonlinear polariton condensation with clear long-range spatial coherence across the critical pumping density. The geometric parameters and material composition of our nonlinear many-body photonic system platform can in principle be tailored to study topological phenomena of other interquasiparticle interactions.

Previous demonstrations of exciton polariton topological insulators demand cryogenic temperatures, and their topological properties are usually fixed. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a room temperature exciton polariton topological insulator in a perovskite zigzag lattice. Polarization serves as a degree of freedom to switch between distinct topological phases, and the topologically nontrivial polariton edge states persist in the presence of onsite energy perturbations, showing strong immunity to disorder. We further demonstrate exciton polariton condensation into the topological edge states under optical pumping. These results provide an ideal platform for realizing active topological polaritonic devices working at ambient conditions, which can find important applications in topological lasers, optical modulation, and switching.

Abstract:Exciton–polaritons—light–matter quasiparticles with spin degrees of freedom and ultrafast dynamics—are a promising platform for spin-based applications. However, an ongoing challenge is the generation and manipulation of high-purity polariton spins over macroscopic distances at room temperature. Here, by creating synthetic spin–orbit coupling in perovskite microcavities with liquid crystal molecules, we demonstrate the polariton spin Hall effect in the Rashba–Dresselhaus regime at room temperature, where spin-polarized polaritons with a high chirality of 0.88 are permanently separated as they propagate over 45 μm. We further show that their spin transport behaviours can be effectively manipulated by external electrical voltages. Our work represents an important step to generate purer polariton spin currents, paving the way to spin-optoelectronic applications with polaritons, such as spin lasers, spin filters and spin logic gates.
