Abstract:At a concentration of 0-1.0 mol.L-1 the effect of salts (KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2) on the structure of water was studied from the viewpoint of energy change using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the results were compared with that obtained by the analysis of the chemical shift obtained by O-17-NMR (delta((OH2)-O-17)). A linear increase in the delta((OH2)-O-17) of water and a linear decrease in the apparent activation energy (-E'/R) of water with an increase in the concentration of salt was obtained. In addition, the rate of change of delta((OH2)-O-17) and -E'/R increased as follows: KCl<MgCl2<CaCl2. Based on a two-state model, we demonstrate that the change in delta((OH2)-O-17) of water (Delta delta) is proportional to the change in molar energy of water (Delta E). These results indicate that KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2 promote the formation of the water cluster structure and the energy change of water is equivalent to the chemical shift obtained by O-17-NMR for the characterization of the water cluster structure.

Abstract:The electrochemical stability window of water is known to vary with the type and concentration of dissolved salts. However, the underlying influence of ions on the thermodynamic stability of aqueous solutions has not been fully understood. Here, we investigated the electrolytic behaviors of aqueous electrolytes as a function of different ions. Our findings indicate that ions with high ionic potential, i.e., charge density, promote the formation of their respective hydration structures, enhancing electrolytic reactions via an inductive effect, particularly for small cations. Conversely, ions with lower ionic potentials increase the proportion of free water molecules—those not engaged in hydration shells or hydrogen-bonding networks—leading to greater electrolytic stability. Furthermore, we observe that the chemical environment created by bulky ions with lower ionic potentials impedes electrolytic reactions by frustrating the solvation of protons and hydroxide ions, the products of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. We found that the solvation of protons plays a more substantial role than that of hydroxide, which explains a more significant shift for OER than for HER, a puzzle that cannot be rationalized by the notion of varying O–H bond strengths of water. These deep insights may inform the design of aqueous systems.

Remarkably, the MB-nrg PEFs demonstrate excellent agreement with available experimental data for the position and size of the first solvation shells, underscoring their potential as predictive models for realistic simulations of ionic aqueous solutions across various thermodynamic conditions and environments.

Abstract:Highly concentrated aqueous electrolytes (termed water-in-salt electrolytes, WiSEs) at solid-liquid interfaces are ubiquitous in myriad applications including biological signaling, electrosynthesis, and energy storage. This interface, known as the electrical double layer (EDL), has a different structure in WiSEs than in dilute electrolytes. Here, we investigate how divalent salts [zinc bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, Zn(TFSI)2], as well as mixtures of mono- and divalent salts [lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) mixed with Zn(TFSI)2], affect the short- and long-range structure of the EDL under confinement using a multimodal combination of scattering, spectroscopy, and surface forces measurements. Raman spectroscopy of bulk electrolytes suggests that the cation is closely associated with the anion regardless of valency. Wide-angle X-ray scattering reveals that all bulk electrolytes form ion clusters; however, the clusters are suppressed with increasing concentration of the divalent ion. To probe the EDL under confinement, we use a Surface Forces Apparatus and demonstrate that the thickness of the adsorbed layer of ions at the interface grows with increasing divalent ion concentration. Multiple interfacial layers form following this adlayer; their thicknesses appear dependent on anion size, rather than cation. Importantly, all electrolytes exhibit very long electrostatic decay lengths that are insensitive to valency. It is likely that in the WiSE regime, electrostatic screening is mediated by the formation of ion clusters rather than individual well-solvated ions. This work contributes to understanding the structure and charge-neutralization mechanism in this class of electrolytes and the interfacial behavior of mixed-electrolyte systems encountered in electrochemistry and biology.

Abstract:We study the structural properties of aqueous solutions of potassium chloride and fluoride at ambient conditions and upon supercooling with the use of molecular dynamics. We perform the calculations at increasing concentration in a range from 0.67mol/kg up to 3.96mol/kg. We investigate the modifications of the hydration shells and the changes in the water structure induced by the presence of the ions. The oxygen–oxygen structure is strongly dependent on the ionic concentration while the hydrogen bonding is well preserved. The results show that increasing the ion concentration is analogous to increase pressure on pure water. The KF salt has a stronger effect on water due to the fluoride anion. F− appears also more effective as substitutional of the oxygen in the water network with possible relevant consequences on the tendency of water to transform to the high density phase.

Abstract:Solvation of ions is ubiquitous on our planet. Solvated ions have a profound effect on the behavior of ionic solutions, which is crucial in nature and technology. Experimentally, ions have been classified into "structure makers" or "structure breakers", depending on whether they slow down or accelerate the solution dynamics. Theoretically, the dynamics of ions has been explained by a dielectric friction model combining hydrodynamics and charge-dipole interaction in the continuum description. However, both approaches lack a microscopic structural basis, leaving the microscopic understanding of salt effects unclear. Here we elucidate unique microscopic features of solvation of spherical ions by computer simulations. We find that increasing the ion electric field causes a sharp transitional decrease in the hydration-shell thickness, signaling the ion mobility change from the Stokes to dielectric friction regime. The dielectric friction regime can be further divided into two due to the competition between the water-water hydrogen bonding and ion-water electrostatic interactions: Whether the former or latter prevails determines whether the water dynamics are accelerated or decelerated. In the ion-water interaction predominant regime, a specific combination of ion size and charge stabilizes the hydration shell via orientational-symmetry breaking, reminiscent of the Thomson problem for the electron configuration of atoms. Notably, the hydration-shell stability is much higher for a composite coordination number than a prime one, a prime-number effect on solvent dynamics. These findings are fundamental to the structure breaker/maker concept and provide new insights into the solvent structure and dynamics beyond the continuum model, paving the way towards a microscopic theory of ionic solutions.

Abstract:The dynamics of water exhibits anomalous behavior in the presence of different electrolytes. Recent experiments [Kim JS, Wu Z, Morrow AR, Yethiraj A, Yethiraj A (2012) J Phys Chem B 116(39): 12007-12013] have found that the self-diffusion of water (D-W) can either be enhanced or suppressed around CsI and NaCl, respectively, relative to that of neat water. Here we show that unlike classical empirical potentials, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations successfully reproduce the qualitative trends observed experimentally. These types of phenomena have often been rationalized in terms of the "structure-making" or "structure-breaking" effects of different ions on the solvent, although the microscopic origins of these features have remained elusive. Rather than disrupting the network in a significant manner, the electrolytes studied here cause rather subtle changes in both structural and dynamical properties of water. In particular, we show that water in the ab initio molecular dynamics simulations is characterized by dynamic heterogeneity, which turns out to be critical in reproducing the experimental trends.
Impact of sulfate salts on water structure: insights from molecular dynamics

Abstract:Ions significantly alter the water's structure, impacting properties such as the temperature of maximum density and the freezing point. We study structural changes in water upon adding sulfate anions, specifically Na2SO4 , K2SO4 , Li2SO4 , and MgSO4 , using computer simulations. We employ the TIP4P/2005 water and the Madrid-2019 force field. By simulating solutions at various concentrations (0.64, 1.30, 1.90, and 3 mol kg −1 ) and two temperatures ( 300 and 240 K), we explore how these electrolytes disrupt water's structure and how they modify the interplay between Low Density Water and High Density Water. Increased salt concentration perturbed water's radial distribution functions (RDFs), particularly up to 240 K. Na2SO4 significantly disrupted water structure, reducing RDF peak heights and indicating decreased tetrahedrality, while MgSO4 increased structural order. K2SO4 displayed anomalous behaviour, minimally affecting water at 1.90 mol kg −1 and ambient temperature but causing more ordered structures at 240 K. Orientational order parameter qt analysis supported these findings. Hydrogen bond network analysis showed notable perturbations at lower temperatures. Diffusion coefficients generally decreased with concentration, with K2SO4 exhibiting increase at 240 K. These results highlight the complex interactions between sulfate ions and water, enhancing our understanding of electrolyte solutions.

Abstract:We utilize molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the microstructures of ions and polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions under external electric fields. By focusing on the multi-body interactions between ionic components and H2O molecules, as well as their responses to the external electric fields, we clarify several nontrivial molecular features of the ionic and polyelectrolyte solutions, such as the solvations of cations and anions, clustering of the ions, and dispersions/aggregations of polyelectrolyte chains, as well as the corresponding responses of H2O molecules in these contexts. Our simulations illustrate the variations in structures of ionic solutions caused by reversing the charge sign of the ions, and elucidate the disparity in structures between anionic and cationic polyelectrolyte solutions in the presence of the external electric fields. This work clarifies the mechanism for the alternations in complex multi-body interactions in aqueous solutions caused by the application electric field, which can contribute to the fundamental understanding of the physical and chemical natures of ion-containing and charged polymeric systems.
Nonlinear Effects of Hydrophobic Confinement on the Electronic Structure and Dielectric Response of Water

Abstract:Fundamental studies of the dielectrics of confined water are critical to understand the ion transport across biological and synthetic nanochannels. The relevance of these fundamental studies, however, surmounts the difficulty of probing water's dielectric constant as a function of a fine variation in confinement. In this work, we explore the computational efficiency of machine learning potentials to derive the confinement effects on the dielectric constant, polarization, and dipole moment of water. Our simulations predict an enhancement of the axial dielectric constant of water under extreme confinement, arising from either the formation of ferroelectric structures of ordered water or larger dipole fluctuations facilitated by the disruption of water's H-bond network. Our study highlights the impact of hydrophobic nanoconfinement on the dielectric constant and on the ionic and electronic structure of water molecules, pointing to the importance of geometric flexibility and electronic polarizability to properly model confinement effects on water.

Abstract:Salt water is ubiquitous, playing crucial roles in geological and physiological processes. Despite centuries of investigations, whether or not water's structure is drastically changed by dissolved ions is still debated. Based on density functional theory, we employ machine learning based molecular dynamics to model sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium bromide solutions at different concentrations. The resulting reciprocal-space structure factors agree quantitatively with neutron diffraction data. Here we provide clear evidence that the ions in salt water do not distort the structure of water in the same way as neat water responds to elevated pressure. Rather, the computed structural changes are restricted to the ionic first solvation shells intruding into the hydrogen bond network, beyond which the oxygen radial-distribution function does not undergo major change relative to neat water. Our findings suggest that the widely cited pressure-like effect on the solvent in Hofmeister series ionic solutions should be carefully revisited.
Dielectric properties of aqueous electrolytes at the nanoscale

Abstract:Despite the ubiquity of nanoconfined aqueous electrolytes, a theoretical framework that accounts for the nonlinear coupling of water and ion polarization is still missing. We introduce a nonlocal and nonlinear field theory for the nanoscale polarization of ions and water and derive the electrolyte dielectric properties as a function of salt concentration to first order in a loop expansion. Classical molecular dynamics simulations are favorably compared with the calculated dielectric response functions. The theory correctly predicts the dielectric permittivity decrement with rising salt concentration and furthermore shows that salt induces a Debye screening in the longitudinal susceptibility but leaves the short-range water organization remarkably unchanged.

Impact of hierarchical water dipole orderings on the dynamics of aqueous salt solutions

Abstract:Ions exhibit highly ion-specific complex behaviours when solvated in water, which remains a mystery despite the fundamental importance of ion solvation in nature, science, and technology. Here we explain these ion-specific properties by the ion-induced hierarchical dipolar, translational, and bond-orientational orderings of ion hydration shell under the competition between ion-water electrostatic interactions and inter-water hydrogen bonding. We first characterise this competition by a new length λ HB ( q ), explaining the ion-specific effects on solution dynamics. Then, by continuously tuning ion size and charge, we find that the bond-orientational order of the ion hydration shell highly develops for specific ion size and charge combinations. This ordering drastically stabilises the hydration shell; its degree changes the water residence time around ions by 11 orders of magnitude for main-group ions. These findings are fundamental to ionic processes in aqueous solutions, providing a physical principle for electrolyte design and application.

Abstract:When salts are added to water, the viscosity generally increases suggesting the ions increase the strength of the water's hydrogen-bond network. However, infrared pump-probe measurements on electrolyte solutions have found that ions have no influence on the rotational dynamics of water molecules implying no enhance-ment or breakdown of the hydrogen-bond network. Here we report optical Kerr-effect and dielectric relaxa-tion spectroscopic measurements, which have enabled us to separate the effects of rotational and transitional motions of the water molecules. These data show that electrolyte solutions behave like a supercooled liquid approaching a glass transition in which rotational and translational molecular motions are decoupled. It is now possible to understand previously conflicting viscosity data, nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation, and ultrafast infrared spectroscopy in a single unified picture.

Abstract:Two kinds of ionic liquids (ILs) (including n-butylammonium nitrate C4H9NH3NO3 and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate EmimBF4) are involved here to study their impacts on the H-bonding structure of water in dilute aqueous solutions using 1H NMR and IR spectra. It has been found that in water-rich region, the chemical shifts of water δ(H2O) in C4H9NH3NO3/water and EmimBF4/water systems decreased with increasing ILs, indicating that the structure of water could be broken by the ILs, which was consistent with IR experimental evidence. In order to uncover the differences amongst ILs, organic compounds and inorganic salts, 1H NMR and IR spectra of KNO3/water and N-methylimidazole/water in dilute aqueous solutions have also been measured. The results demonstrated that KNO3 acted similarly to ILs in breaking the water structure, but that those of N-methylimidazole had the opposite effect.
Ionization differences between weak and strong electrolytes: the role of protonic quantum effects as perturbed by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy

Abstract:Revealing the microscopic dynamics, including protonic quantum effects, in aqueous electrolyte solutions has been a challenge for modern experimental methods and molecular dynamics simulations of the past decade. These properties are out of the scope of the standard electrolytic dissociation model and leave a gap between theory and experiment due to the lack of details of the fast molecular dynamics during solvation. We report a dielectric-spectroscopy study (1Hz to 20 GHz), which unambiguously demonstrates a net difference in the dynamic structures of weak and strong electrolytes, shedding new light on the mechanism of solvation via proton exchange reactions. Based on these data, we suggest an extension of Arrhenius’ seminal model, providing a more accurate description of the electrical properties of electrolytes over a wide range of concentrations (10$^{-7}$ to 10 M). We show that dissolved species of weak electrolytes more likely interact with each other than with the solvent, preventing dissociation and explaining a sharp difference between weak and strong electrolytes. These results extend our understanding of the molecular dynamics of aqueous electrolyte solutions in biology, electrochemical systems, and nanofluidics.
