Abstract:At a concentration of 0-1.0 mol.L-1 the effect of salts (KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2) on the structure of water was studied from the viewpoint of energy change using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the results were compared with that obtained by the analysis of the chemical shift obtained by O-17-NMR (delta((OH2)-O-17)). A linear increase in the delta((OH2)-O-17) of water and a linear decrease in the apparent activation energy (-E'/R) of water with an increase in the concentration of salt was obtained. In addition, the rate of change of delta((OH2)-O-17) and -E'/R increased as follows: KCl<MgCl2<CaCl2. Based on a two-state model, we demonstrate that the change in delta((OH2)-O-17) of water (Delta delta) is proportional to the change in molar energy of water (Delta E). These results indicate that KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2 promote the formation of the water cluster structure and the energy change of water is equivalent to the chemical shift obtained by O-17-NMR for the characterization of the water cluster structure.

Abstract:While salt mediated association between similarly charged poly-electrolytes occurs in a broad range of biological and colloidal systems, the effects of mono-valent salts remains little known experimentally. In this communication we systematically study influences of assorted mono-valent salts on structures of and interactions in two dimensional ordered bundles of charged fibrils assembled in water using Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). By quantitatively analyzing the scattering peak features, we discern two competing effects with opposite influences due to partitioning of salts in the aqueous complex. While electrostatic effects from salts residing between the fibrils suppress attraction between fibrils and expand the bundles, it is compensated by external osmotic pressure from peripheral salts in the aqueous media. The balance between the two effects varies for different salts and gives rise to ion-specific equilibrium behavior as well as structure of ordered bundles in salty water. The specific ions effects in like charged aggregates can be attributed to preferential distribution of ions inside or outside the bundles, correlated to the ranking of ions in Hofmeister series for macromolecules. Unlike conventional studies on Hofmeister effects by thermodynamic measurements relying on modeling for data interpretation, our study is based directly on structural analysis and is model-insensitive.

Abstract:Charged aqueous interfaces are of paramount importance in electrochemical, biological and environmental sciences. The properties of aqueous interfaces with ionic surfactants can be influenced by the presence of counterions. Earlier experiments involving vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy of aqueous interfaces with the negatively charged Sodium dodecyl sulfate (Na+DS- or SDS) surfactants revealed that the hydrogen bonding strength of the interfacial water molecules follows a certain order when salts of monovalent and divalent cations are added. It is known that cations do not directly participate in hydrogen bonding with water molecules, rather they only influence the hydrogen bonded network through their electrostatic fields. In the current work, we have simulated the aqueous interfacial systems of sodium dodecyl sulfate in the presence of chloride salts of mono and divalent countercations. The electronic polarization effects on the ions are considered at a mean-field level within the electronic continuum correction model. Our calculations of the VSFG spectra show a blue shift in presence of added countercations whose origin is traced to different relative contributions of water molecules from the solvation shells of the surfactant headgroups and the remaining water molecules in the presence of countercations. Furthermore, the cations shield the electric fields of the surfactant headgroups which, in turn, influence the contributions of water molecules to the total VSFG spectrum. This shielding effect becomes more significant when divalent countercatiions are present. The dynamics of water molecules is found to be slower at the interface in comparison to bulk. The interfacial depth dependence of various dynamical quantities shows that the interface is structurally and dynamically more heterogeneous at microscopic level.

Abstract:The higher tendency for anions to accumulate at the salt aqueous solution/air interface than that of cations has been observed experimentally and theoretically, suggesting that the size and polarizability of the ions play essential roles in this effect. Here, we investigate the influence of the nonsymmetrical positive-vs-negative charge distribution in water molecules to the hydration and surface/bulk partition of the solvated positively and negatively charged particles by using molecular dynamics simulations with hypothetical ions to validate our theoretical models. The results indicate that positive and negative charges (called cations and anions, respectively, although they may not really exist in experiments) with all other properties identical are hydrated differently and that the anions are more likely to populate at the surface. The simulation on a combination series of cations and anions in aqueous solution shows significant variations on water dynamics, likely due to the specific cooperativity between oppositely charged ions.

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations and graph-theory-based cluster analysis, we investigate the structure-transport properties of typical water-in-salt electrolytes. We demonstrate that ions exhibit distinct dynamics across different ionic clusters—namely, solvent-separated ion pairs (SSIPs), contact ion pairs (CIPs), and aggregates (AGGs). We assess the average proportions of various ionic species and their lifetimes. Our method reveals a dynamic decoupling of ion kinetics, with each species independently contributing to the overall molecular motion. This is evidenced by the fact that the total velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) and power spectrum can be expressed as a weighted sum of independent functions for each species. The experimental data on the ionic conductivity of the studied \ce{LiTFSI} electrolytes align well with our theoretical predictions at various concentrations, based on the proportions and diffusion coefficients of free ions derived from our analysis. The insights gained into the solvation structures and dynamics of different ionic species enable us to elucidate the physical mechanisms driving ion transport in such superconcentrated electrolytes, providing a comprehensive framework for the future design and optimization of electrolytes.

Abstract:We utilize molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the microstructures of ions and polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions under external electric fields. By focusing on the multi-body interactions between ionic components and H2O molecules, as well as their responses to the external electric fields, we clarify several nontrivial molecular features of the ionic and polyelectrolyte solutions, such as the solvations of cations and anions, clustering of the ions, and dispersions/aggregations of polyelectrolyte chains, as well as the corresponding responses of H2O molecules in these contexts. Our simulations illustrate the variations in structures of ionic solutions caused by reversing the charge sign of the ions, and elucidate the disparity in structures between anionic and cationic polyelectrolyte solutions in the presence of the external electric fields. This work clarifies the mechanism for the alternations in complex multi-body interactions in aqueous solutions caused by the application electric field, which can contribute to the fundamental understanding of the physical and chemical natures of ion-containing and charged polymeric systems.

Abstract:The anion chemistry of lithium salts plays a pivotal role in determining the physicochemical and electrochemical performances of ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes. This work explores the effects of anion size and symmetry on coordination and dynamics of lithium ions (Li+) through molecular dynamics simulations. Four types of ILs composed of the same cation N-N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)-ammonium (DEME+) and different anions of symmetrical bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI−) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI−), as well as asymmetric (fluorosulfonyl)(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (FTFSI−) and (difluoromethylsulfonyl)-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (DFTFSI−) are studied for comparison purpose. The calculation results show that the formation of Li+ aggregates in concentrated IL electrolytes could enhance Li+ transport due to the Li+ transport mechanism gradually shifts from vehicle transport to Li+ hopping through the anion ligand layers. Furthermore, it can be seen that the asymmetric anion based electrolytes possess superior performance than that of symmetric anions. In addition, the dual-anion based electrolytes all exhibit faster Li+ diffusion coefficient than mono-anion based electrolytes, which arise from the synergistic effect between mixed anions. As such, this work highlights the role of the anion structures and synergism in the rational design of concentrated IL-based electrolytes.

Abstract:We study the structural properties of aqueous solutions of potassium chloride and fluoride at ambient conditions and upon supercooling with the use of molecular dynamics. We perform the calculations at increasing concentration in a range from 0.67mol/kg up to 3.96mol/kg. We investigate the modifications of the hydration shells and the changes in the water structure induced by the presence of the ions. The oxygen–oxygen structure is strongly dependent on the ionic concentration while the hydrogen bonding is well preserved. The results show that increasing the ion concentration is analogous to increase pressure on pure water. The KF salt has a stronger effect on water due to the fluoride anion. F− appears also more effective as substitutional of the oxygen in the water network with possible relevant consequences on the tendency of water to transform to the high density phase.

Abstract:The dynamics of water exhibits anomalous behavior in the presence of different electrolytes. Recent experiments [Kim JS, Wu Z, Morrow AR, Yethiraj A, Yethiraj A (2012) J Phys Chem B 116(39): 12007-12013] have found that the self-diffusion of water (D-W) can either be enhanced or suppressed around CsI and NaCl, respectively, relative to that of neat water. Here we show that unlike classical empirical potentials, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations successfully reproduce the qualitative trends observed experimentally. These types of phenomena have often been rationalized in terms of the "structure-making" or "structure-breaking" effects of different ions on the solvent, although the microscopic origins of these features have remained elusive. Rather than disrupting the network in a significant manner, the electrolytes studied here cause rather subtle changes in both structural and dynamical properties of water. In particular, we show that water in the ab initio molecular dynamics simulations is characterized by dynamic heterogeneity, which turns out to be critical in reproducing the experimental trends.
Specific Ion Effects in Different Media: Current Status and Future Challenges

Abstract:We discuss the current state of research as well as the future challenges for a deeper understanding of specific ion effects in protic and aprotic solvents as well as various additional media. Despite recent interest in solute or interfacial effects, we focus exclusively on the specific properties of ions in bulk electrolyte solutions. Corresponding results show that many mechanisms remain unknown for these simple media, although theoretical, computational, and experimental studies have provided some insights into explaining individual observations. In particular, the importance of local interactions and electronic properties is emphasized, which enabled a more consistent interpretation of specific ion effects over the past years. Despite current insufficient knowledge, we also discuss future challenges in relation to dynamic properties as well as the influence of different concentrations, different solvents, and solute contributions to gain a deeper understanding of specific ion effects for technological applications.
Ion effects on minimally hydrated polymers: hydrogen bond populations and dynamics.

Abstract:Compared to bulk water, the effect of ions in confined environments or heterogeneous aqueous solutions is less understood. In this study, we characterize the influence of ions on hydrogen bond populations and dynamics within minimally hydrated polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) solutions using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopies. We demonstrate that hydrogen bond populations and lifetimes are directly related to ion size and hydration levels within the polymer matrix. Specifically, larger monovalent cation sizes (Li+, Na+, K+) as well as anion sizes (F-, Cl-, Br-) increase hydrogen bond populations and accelerate hydrogen bond dynamics, with anions having more pronounced effects compared to cations. Additionally, increased overall water content results in a significant slowdown of dynamics. These results contribute to the understanding of ion-specific effects in complex partially-hydrated polymer systems, highlighting the complex interplay between ion concentration, water structuring, and polymer hydration state. The study provides a framework for designing polymer membrane compositions with ion-specific properties.

Abstract:Using classical density functional theory, we investigate the influence of solvent on the structure and ionic screening of electrolytes under slit confinement and in contact with a reservoir. We consider a symmetric electrolyte with implicit and explicit solvent models and find that spatially resolving solvent molecules is essential for the ion structure at confining walls, excess ion adsorption, and the pressure exerted on the walls. Despite this, we observe only moderate differences in the period of oscillations of the pressure with the slit width and virtually coinciding decay lengths as functions of the scaling variable σion/λD , where σion is the ion diameter and λD the Debye length. Moreover, in the electrostatic-dominated regime, this scaling behavior is practically independent of the relative permittivity and its dependence on the ion concentration. Specific Anion Effects on Water Structure Adjacent to Protein Monolayers

Abstract:Vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS) was used to explore specific ion effects on interfacial water structure adjacent to a bovine serum albumin (BSA) monolayer adsorbed at the air/water interface. The subphase conditions were varied by the use of six different sodium salts and four different pH values. At pH 2 and 3, the protein layer was positively charged and it was found that the most chaotropic anions caused the greatest attenuation of water structure. The order of the salts followed an inverse Hofmeister series. On the other hand, when the protein layer was near its isoelectric point (pH 5), the most chaotropic anions caused the greatest increase in water structure, although the effect was weak. In this case, a direct Hofmeister series was obeyed. Finally, virtually no effect was observed when the protein layer was negatively charged with a subphase pH of 9. For comparison, similar experiments were run with positively charged, negatively charged, and zwitterionic surfactant monolayers. These experiments gave rise to nearly the identical results as the protein monolayer which suggested that specific anion effects are dominated by the charge state of the interfacial layer rather than its detailed chemical structure. In a final set of experiments, salt effects were examined with a monolayer made from an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP). The peptide consisted of 120 pentameric repeats of the sequence Val-Pro-Gly-Val-Gly. Data from this net neutral biopolymer followed a very weak, but direct Hofmeister series. This suggested that direct anion binding to the amide groups in the backbone of a polypeptide is quite weak in agreement with the BSA data. The results from the variously charged protein, surfactant, and polymer monolayers were compared with a modified Gouy-Chapman-Stern model. The agreement with this simple model was quite good.

Abstract:The electrochemical stability window of water is known to vary with the type and concentration of dissolved salts. However, the underlying influence of ions on the thermodynamic stability of aqueous solutions has not been fully understood. Here, we investigated the electrolytic behaviors of aqueous electrolytes as a function of different ions. Our findings indicate that ions with high ionic potential, i.e., charge density, promote the formation of their respective hydration structures, enhancing electrolytic reactions via an inductive effect, particularly for small cations. Conversely, ions with lower ionic potentials increase the proportion of free water molecules—those not engaged in hydration shells or hydrogen-bonding networks—leading to greater electrolytic stability. Furthermore, we observe that the chemical environment created by bulky ions with lower ionic potentials impedes electrolytic reactions by frustrating the solvation of protons and hydroxide ions, the products of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. We found that the solvation of protons plays a more substantial role than that of hydroxide, which explains a more significant shift for OER than for HER, a puzzle that cannot be rationalized by the notion of varying O–H bond strengths of water. These deep insights may inform the design of aqueous systems.

Ion Conductivity and Correlations in Model Salt-Doped Polymers: Effects of Interaction Strength and Concentration

Abstract:Correlated anion and cation motion can significantly reduce the overall ion conductivity in electrolytes versus the ideal conductivity calculated based on the diffusion constants alone. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we calculate conductivity and the degree of uncorrelated ion motion in salt-doped homopolymers and block copolymers as a function of concentration and interaction strengths. Calculating conductivity from ion mobility under an applied electric field increases accuracy versus the typical use of fluctuation dissipation relationships in equilibrium simulations. In typical electrolytes, correlation in cation-anion motion is often expected to be reduced at low ion concentrations. However, for these polymer electrolytes with strong ion-polymer and ion-ion interactions, we find correlations are increased at lower concentrations when other variables are held constant. We show this phenomenon is related to the slower ion cluster relaxation rate at low concentrations rather than the static spatial state of ion aggregation or the fraction of free ions.

Abstract:Highly concentrated aqueous electrolytes (termed water-in-salt electrolytes, WiSEs) at solid-liquid interfaces are ubiquitous in myriad applications including biological signaling, electrosynthesis, and energy storage. This interface, known as the electrical double layer (EDL), has a different structure in WiSEs than in dilute electrolytes. Here, we investigate how divalent salts [zinc bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, Zn(TFSI)2], as well as mixtures of mono- and divalent salts [lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) mixed with Zn(TFSI)2], affect the short- and long-range structure of the EDL under confinement using a multimodal combination of scattering, spectroscopy, and surface forces measurements. Raman spectroscopy of bulk electrolytes suggests that the cation is closely associated with the anion regardless of valency. Wide-angle X-ray scattering reveals that all bulk electrolytes form ion clusters; however, the clusters are suppressed with increasing concentration of the divalent ion. To probe the EDL under confinement, we use a Surface Forces Apparatus and demonstrate that the thickness of the adsorbed layer of ions at the interface grows with increasing divalent ion concentration. Multiple interfacial layers form following this adlayer; their thicknesses appear dependent on anion size, rather than cation. Importantly, all electrolytes exhibit very long electrostatic decay lengths that are insensitive to valency. It is likely that in the WiSE regime, electrostatic screening is mediated by the formation of ion clusters rather than individual well-solvated ions. This work contributes to understanding the structure and charge-neutralization mechanism in this class of electrolytes and the interfacial behavior of mixed-electrolyte systems encountered in electrochemistry and biology.
