Abstract:Over the years, numerous methods, techniques, and tools have been developed to support the different areas and aspects of Software Engineering (SE). An increasing amount of empirical evidence is expected to help researchers and practitioners to assess the current research and to identify the most promising areas of the technical advancements in SE. Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) has been gaining significant attention from SE researchers since its introduction at ICSE 2004. In recent years, more and more evidential assessments (in particular in the forms of systematic reviews, mapping studies, and meta-analyses) have been reported on a wide variety of topics in SE. Though the rigor of evidence-based practice for research has been recognized by SE community, its relevance to software practices and influence on primary research have yet to be comprehensively examined. Along with the growth of EBSE, many methodological issues are also emerging. It is the time to pay more attention to the relevance of evidence! The objectives of EAST series of workshop are to provide an international platform for discussing the state-of-the-practice of evidence-based practice over the years, identifying and debating on the emerging challenges and issues in current empirical and evidence-based research, and particularly suggest improvements for the relevance and quality of evidence in SE. EAST 2012 is aimed to bring together both researchers and practitioners in software engineering, empiricists and theorists in research community, to discuss the rigor, relevance, experiences and challenges of adopting evidence-based research methodologies in SE, with special focus on evidence relevance to nsoftware practice. Moreover, based on the participants' input a research agenda will be devised for continuous methodology adaptation and improvement, and progressive alignment between evidence aggregation and practical needs. The workshop program committee selected 12 papers from the submissions in response to the invitations for the workshop from eight countries: Chile, China, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. They address several aspects of empirical research in software engineering: Systematic Reviews and Evidence-Based Practice, Methodologies and Tools, and Empirical Studies and Evidence.
