Abstract:Chemical substitutions are powerful molecular design tools to enhance the performance of organic semiconductors, for instance, to improve solubility, intermolecular stacking, or film quality. However, at the microscopic level, substitutions in general tend to increase the molecular reorganization energy and thus decrease the intrinsic charge-carrier mobility. Through density functional theory calculations, we elucidate strategies that could be followed to reduce the reorganization energy upon chemical substitution. Specific examples are given here for hole-transport materials including indolo-carbazoles and several triarylamine derivatives. Through decomposition of the total reorganization energy into the internal coordinate space, we are able to identify the molecular segment that provides the most important contributions to the reorganization energy. It is found that when substitution reduces (enhances) the amplitude of the relevant frontier molecular orbital in that segment, the total reorganization energy decreases (increases). In particular, chlorination at appropriate positions can significantly reduce the reorganization energy. Several other substituents are shown to play a similar role, to a greater or lesser extent.

Abstract:Charge transport properties of materials composed of small organic molecules are important for numerous optoelectronic applications. A material's ability to transport charges is considerably influenced by the charge reorganization energies of the composing molecules. Hence, predictions about charge-transport properties of organic materials deserve reliable statements about these charge reorganization energies. However, using density functional theory which is mostly used for the predictions, the computed reorganization energies depend strongly on the chosen functional. To gain insight, a benchmark of various density functionals for the accurate calculation of charge reorganization energies is presented. A correlation between the charge reorganization energies and the ionization potentials is found which suggests applying IP-tuning to obtain reliable values for charge reorganization energies. According to benchmark investigations with IP-EOM-CCSD single-point calculations, the tuned functionals provide indeed more reliable charge reorganization energies. Among the standard functionals, ωB97X-D and SOGGA11X yield accurate charge reorganization energies in comparison with IP-EOM-CCSD values. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Organic semiconductors (OSCs), being light in weight, decomposable, cheap, and flexible, can be an excellent replacement for inorganic semiconductors. Reorganization energy (RE) is an essential parameter that can help determine charge carriers' mobility. Understanding and controlling the reorganization energy (RE) of OSCs is necessary for the design and optimization of organic electronic devices such as optoelectronic devices, organic photovoltaics, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), photodetectors, and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). The quantitative read-across structure-property relationship (q-RASPR) is an emerging computational methodology that can efficiently predict the material's property using structural and physiochemical features, and similarity measures. This method has also shown an enhancement in the predictivity of the models so developed. The stacking regression methodology uses the aggregates/predictions from the individual models and uses them according to their weights to produce an output in the new model. This study elaborates on the sequential steps for the development of a stacking q-RASPR model for the prediction of reorganization energy (RE) of the p-type organic semiconductors (OSCs) comprising 171 diverse organic structures of acenes, thiophenes, thienoacenes, and some pantalenes moiety as well. The predictions from the individual q-RASPR models developed using different similarity measures were used to perform the final stacking regression. Different machine learning (ML) algorithms were also used to enhance the model quality and predictivity. The model so developed through the stacking regression using support vector machine (SVM) method was of statistically good quality (R 2 = 0.735), robustness (Q 2 LOO = 0.668), and effective predictive ability (Q 2 F1 = 0.801). The error in the model's predictions is also low compared to the other models developed earlier. This q-RASPR model was also used to predict an external set of 10888 compounds, and it shows an error (MAE) of only 87.95 meV, much lower than that reported earlier. The model developed in this study may be used to predict RE during high throughput screening of OSCs.

Abstract:The reorganization energy is one important parameter regarding the charge transfer in organic semiconductors. In the past, the influence of the molecular packing on the intramolecular reorganization energy was commonly neglected in theoretical estimations. Here, the quantum mechanic/molecular mechanic (qm/mm) method is used to study this influence for four small molecules: N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD), N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(1-naphthyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NPB), 4,4'-bis(N-carbazolyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (CBP), and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen). An approximate linear relationship between the intramolecular reorganization energy and the change of the torsion angle during the molecular relaxation which causes the most steric hindrance is found. Furthermore, reorganization energies from qm/mm calculations are smaller depending on the degree of reduced conformational change.

Abstract:The quantum efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) highly depends on the S-1-T-1 energy gaps (Delta E-ST) of the emitters. However, the Delta E-ST values determined in solution or even in organic thin films through a static approach continuously fail in predicting device performance. Herein, by systematically investigating the time-resolved emission spectra of several TADF emitters in various matrixes and the dielectric spectra of the matrixes, it is demonstrated that molecular organic semiconductors can undergo reversible and irreversible spatial rearrangements within a few dozen nanoseconds in an electric field created by a polarized charge-transfer state and can in turn lower the excited-state energy. In contrast to solution solvation, the polarized microenvironment in films can last for tens of microseconds or more after removing the electric field, leading to a narrowing and a broader distribution of Delta E-ST. In TADF OLEDs, the large dipole moment of emitter-based polarons is key for reducing the Delta E-ST of subsequently generated excitons by inducing the dipole orientation of the surrounding molecules. Understanding the so-called solid-state solvation with a dynamic approach can provide deeper insight into the working mechanism in organic semiconductor devices.

The relationship between structure and excited-state properties in polyanilines from geminal-based methods

Abstract:We employ state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods to study the structure-to-property relationship in polyanilines (PANIs) of different lengths and oxidation states. Specifically, we focus on leucoemeraldine, emeraldine, and pernigraniline in their tetramer and octamer forms. We scrutinize their structural properties, HOMO and LUMO energies, HOMO-LUMO gaps, and vibrational and electronic spectroscopy using various Density Functional Approximations (DFAs). Furthermore, the accuracy of DFAs is assessed by comparing them to experimental and wavefunction-based reference data. We perform large-scale orbital-optimized pair-Coupled Cluster Doubles (oo-pCCD) calculations for ground and electronically excited states and conventional Configuration Interaction Singles (CIS) calculations for electronically excited states in all investigated systems. The EOM-pCCD+S approach with pCCD-optimized orbitals allows us to unambiguously identify charge transfer and local transitions across the investigated PANI systems -- an analysis not possible within a delocalized canonical molecular orbital basis obtained, for instance, by DFAs. We show that the low-lying part of the emeraldine and pernigraniline spectrum is dominated by charge transfer excitations and that polymer elongation changes the character of the leading transitions. Furthermore, we augment our study with a quantum informational analysis of orbital correlations in various forms of PANIs.

Abstract:Efficient charge transport is a key step toward high efficiency in small-Molecule organic photovoltaics. Here we applied time-of-flight and organic field-effect transistor to complementarily study the influences of molecular structure, trap states, and molecular orientation on charge transport of small-molecule DRCN7T (D1) and its analogue DERHD7T (D2). It is revealed that, despite the subtle difference of the chemical structures, D1 exhibits higher charge mobility, the absence of shallow traps, and better photosensitivity than D2. Moreover, charge transport is favored in the out-of-plane structure within D1-based organic solar cells, while D2 prefers in-plane charge transport.

Abstract:The charged forms of π–conjugated chromophores are relevant in the field of organic electronics as charge carriers in optoelectronic devices, but also as energy storage substrates in organic batteries. In this context, intramolecular reorganization energy plays an important role in controlling material efficiency. In this work, we investigate how the diradical character influences the reorganization energies of holes and electrons by considering a library of diradicaloid chromophores. We determine the reorganization energies with the four-point adiabatic potential method using quantum–chemical calculations at density functional theory (DFT) level. To assess the role of diradical character, we compare the results obtained, assuming both closed-shell and open-shell representations of the neutral species. The study shows how the diradical character impacts the geometrical and electronic structure of neutral species, which in turn control the magnitude of reorganization energies for both charge carriers. Based on computed geometries of neutral and charged species, we propose a simple scheme to rationalize the small, computed reorganization energies for both n-type and p-type charge transport. The study is supplemented with the calculation of intermolecular electronic couplings governing charge transport for selected diradicals, further supporting the ambipolar character of the investigated diradicals.

Abstract:In this study, the orientational dependence of the charge transport mechanism and some important factors related to crystal structure are systematically investigated by quantum chemical methods. Organic semiconductors with small reorganization energies and large transfer integrals originating from their π-stacking crystal structures show excellent charge transport properties. The reorganization energy from the geometrical relaxation occurs during the charge transfer process. The transfer integral of a molecular crystal should be attributed to multiple stacking parameters. A semi-classical simulation model to calculate the anisotropic mobility of a crystalline molecule is extended from one to three dimensions. As we predicted, the anisotropic mobility calculated from our model is improved by considering the contribution from every direction in space, rather than just one plane. This theoretical study determines the importance of tuning the molecular geometry and calculation accuracy for high-performance organic semiconductor materials.

Abstract:In this work, the switching mechanism of a molecular redox switch due to the application of an external electric field (along the X axis) was studied using density functional theory (DFT/TD-DFT), quantum theory of atom-in-molecule and Landauer theory. In this regard, some electronic, vibrational and optical properties of this molecular switch are calculated. In addition, the current–voltage (I–V) diagram, as well as Joule-like and Peltier-like ntermolecular phenomenological coefficients of this molecular switch, were calculated using Onsager linear Force-Flux law. When the electric field is applied along the X-axis (Ex) and its intensity increases to 40 × 10–4 a.u, the studied molecular switch is turned on. In addition, the results of this study showed that applying an external electric field has a significant effect on the optical properties of this designed molecular switch.

Abstract:The present article investigates a reversible structural phase transition, and related physical properties change in a new quasi-one-dimensional (1D) organic semiconductor crystal, DBA(TCNQ)(2) [DBA = dibutylammonium, TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane]. Differential scanning calorimetry traces reveal the DBA(TCNQ)(2) single crystal undergoes a first-order reversible phase transition at around 260-270 K, which is accompanied by a dramatic change in both conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. A direct correlation of physical properties with crystal structure is established. Detailed X-ray structure analyses indicate a reversible structural change related to dimer-tetramer transition along the TCNQ chain and disruption of the hydrogen-bonding chains as the temperature decreases from 270 to 253 K, which is the origin of the electronic and magnetic. transition.

Abstract:While it is commonly accepted that the activation energy of the thermally activated polaron hopping transport in disordered organic semiconductors can be decoupled into a disorder and a polaron contribution, their relative weight is still controversial. This feature is quantified in terms of the so-called $C$ factor in the expression for the effective polaron mobility: ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{e}\ensuremath{\propto}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}{E}_{a}/{k}_{B}T\ensuremath{-}C{(\ensuremath{\sigma}/{k}_{B}T)}^{2}]$, where ${E}_{a}$ and $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ are the polaron activation energy and the energy width of a Gaussian density of states (DOS), respectively. A key issue is whether the universal scaling relation (implying a constant $C$ factor) regarding the polaron formation energy is really obeyed, as recently claimed in the literature [Seki and Wojcik, J. Chem. Phys. 145, 034106 (2016)]. In the present work, we reinvestigate this issue on the basis of the Marcus transition rate model using extensive kinetic Monte Carlo simulations as a benchmark tool. We compare the polaron-transport simulation data with results of analytical calculations by the effective medium approximation and multiple trapping and release approaches. The key result of this study is that the $C$ factor for Marcus polaron hopping depends on first the degree of carrier localization, i.e., the coupling between the sites, further whether quasiequilibrium has indeed been reached, and finally the $\ensuremath{\sigma}/{E}_{a}$ ratio. This implies that there is no universal scaling with respect to the relative contribution of polaron and disorder effect. Finally, we demonstrate that virtually the same values of the disorder parameter $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ are determined from available experimental data using the $C$ factors obtained here irrespective of whether the data are interpreted in terms of Marcus or Miller-Abrahams rates. This implies that molecular reorganization contributes only weakly to charge transport, and it justifies the use of the zero-order Miller-Abrahams rate model for evaluating the DOS width from temperature-dependent charge transport measurements regardless of whether or not polaron effects are accounted for.

Abstract:Fully organic photocatalyst systems are highly attractive, not merely because they are transition-metal free, but more importantly due to their unique and often potent reactivity. A detailed understanding of the various redox states, both ground and excited state, and specifically what structural parameters control them is therefore crucial for harnessing the full potential of these system in organic synthesis. However, unlike their organometallic counterparts, detailed structure-property relationships for organic photocatalysts are largely absent from the literature. In this study, we demonstrate linear free-energy relationships across a range of key photophysical and electrochemical properties of 2,6-diarylpyryliums. Electronic absorption and emission maxima can be carefully tuned over the ranges of 83 nm and 102 nm respectively. Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interactions were revealed in cases of substitution with polarizable heavy-atoms. A strong linear dependence of ground state reduction potentials on substituent electronics was observed. Notably, the excited state reduction potential, E*red, could be controlled over a range of nearly 1000 mV. Systematic errors in computational modeling of ground and excited state redox potentials were identified and corrected. We believe the quantitative structure-property relationships identified here provide foundational tools for rational and predictive organic photocatalyst design.

Abstract:Clarifying the structural basis and microscopic mechanism lying behind electronic properties of molecular semiconductors is of paramount importance in further material design to enhance the performance of perovskite solar cells. In this paper, three conjugated quasilinear segments of 9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluorene, 9,9-dimethyl-2,7-diphenyl-9H-fluorene, and 2,6-diphenyldithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene are end-capped with two bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino groups for structurally simple molecular semiconductors Z1, Z2, and Z3, which crystallize in the monoclinic P21/n, triclinic P1̅, and monoclinic C2/c space groups, respectively. The modes and energies of intermolecular noncovalent interactions in various closely packed dimers extracted from single crystals are computed based on the quantum theory of atoms in molecules and energy decomposition analysis. Transfer integrals, reorganization energies, and center-of-mass distances in these dimers as well as band structures of single crystals are also calculated to define the theoretical limit of hole transport and microscopic transport pictures. Joint X-ray diffraction and space-charge-limiting current measurements on solution-deposited films suggest the dominant role of crystallinity in thin-film hole mobility. Photoelectron spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements show that an enhanced interfacial interaction between the perovskite and Z3 could attenuate the adverse impact of reducing the energetic driving force of hole extraction. Our comparative studies show that the molecular semiconductor Z3 with a properly aligned highest occupied molecular orbital energy level and a high thin-film mobility can be employed for efficient perovskite solar cells, achieving a good power conversion efficiency of 20.84%, which is even higher than that of 20.42% for the spiro-OMeTAD control.
