Abstract:The solid + liquid phase equilibria between α-Al and β-AlLi were determined using differential thermal analysis (DTA), metallography, and chemical analysis. Boron nitride (BN), which was found to be inert to these alloys, was used as the container. These measurements were carried out in order to resolve the discrepancies reported in the literature. The α-Al+β-AlLi eutectic temperature and composition were determined to be 600 °C±1 °C and 25.8±0.5 at. pct Li. Using these data and data reported in the literature concerning the phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties, thermodynamic models for all the phases were obtained by optimization. The thermodynamic values obtained for the β-AlLi phase describe not only the phase equilibria, but also yield structural defect data in agreement with measured values. The assessed enthalpies of formation, excess entropies of formation, and entropies of melting for all the intermetallic phases obtained are compared with empirical correlations when experimental data are not available. In addition to the stable diagram, a metastable diagram involving the δ′-Al3Li is also calculated from the thermodynamic models. The calculated diagram is in good agreement with the experimental data.
The binary alloy phase diagram and the golden-section law

Abstract:In Fe G phase diagram, several specific property values approach very much the golden section point, therefore some people believe that there may be inner link between the phase diagram and the golden section law.In this paper, partition ratio of every combination of major specific property values in six phase diagrams of binary alloy diagram are calculated including Fe G phase, and the distributions are shown in figures and tables directly. It is proved that there is no inner link between the binary alloy phase diagram and the golden section law.

Abstract:The high-entropy alloy system Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Mo-Ni has been previously designed based on the Al x CoCrCuFeNi system and was demonstrated to have great improvements in toughness at high hardness level and in softening resistance at elevated temperatures. For this promising system, it is important to have phase diagrams for further efficient alloy design and research. The current study combines the results from scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, room-temperature and high-temperature x-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis to construct approximate phase diagrams by varying the content of each composing element. Thermodynamic calculation in considering both mixing enthalpy and entropy was also used to justify the simple phase fields in these phase diagrams.

Abstract:Some Cu-based alloy systems with a large positive enthalpy of mixing display a eutectic or peritectic phase diagram under equilibrium conditions, but show a metastable liquid miscibility gap in the undercooled state. When the melt is undercooled below certain temperature beyond the critical liquid-phase separation temperature, it separates into two liquids with different compositions. The compositions of the two liquids change successively upon the metastable phase diagram before solidification occurs. The shape and position of the metastable miscibility gap are dependent of the alloy components and their interaction features. This study reviews the metastable phase diagrams of Cu-based alloy systems, which are derived from experiments and thermodynamic calculations.

Abstract:The phase diagrams of continuous binary nanoalloys are important in providing guidance for material designs and industrial applications. However, experimental determination of the nano-phase diagram is scarce since calorimetric measurements remain quite challenging at the nanoscale. Based on the size-dependent cohesive energy model, we developed a unified nano-thermodynamic model to investigate the effects of the size, shape, and segregation on the phase diagrams of continuous binary nanoalloys. The liquidus/solidus dropped in temperature, two-phase zone was narrowed, and the degree of surface segregation decreased with decrease in the size or increase in the shape factor. The congruent melting point of Cu-Au nanoalloys with and without segregation is linearly shifted to higher Au component and lower temperature with decreasing size or increasing shape factor. By reviewing surface segregated element of different binary nanoalloys, two segregation rules based on the solid surface energy and atomic size have been identified. Moreover, the established model can be employed to describe other physicochemical properties of nanoalloys, e.g. the cohesive energy, catalytic activation energy, and order-disorder transition temperature, and the validity is supported by available other theoretical prediction, experimental data and molecular dynamic simulations results. This will help the experimentalists by guiding them in their attempts to design bimetallic nanocrystals with the desired properties.

Abstract:Alloying is a successful strategy for tuning the phases and properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). To accelerate the synthesis of TMDC alloys, we present a method for generating temperature-composition equilibrium phase diagrams by combining first-principles total-energy calculations with thermodynamic solution models. This method is applied to three representative 2D TMDC alloys: an isostructural alloy, MoS2(1-x)Te2x , and two heterostructural alloys, Mo1-x W x Te2 and WS2(1-x)Te2x . Using density-functional theory and special quasi-random structures, we show that the mixing enthalpy of these binary alloys can be reliably represented using a sub-regular solution model fitted to the total energies of relatively few compositions. The cubic sub-regular solution model captures 3-body effects that are important in TMDC alloys. By comparing phase diagrams generated with this method to those calculated with previous methods, we demonstrate that this method can be used to rapidly design phase diagrams of TMDC alloys and related 2D materials.

Abstract:In this paper we present and discuss phase equilibria in the quaternary Al–Cr–Fe–Ni and the quinary Al–Co–Cr–Fe–Ni alloy systems based on experimental data from DTA/DSC, SEM/EDS, and SEM/EBSD on as-cast and isothermally annealed samples. These data as well as literature data were used for developing a new Al–Co–Cr–Fe–Ni thermodynamic description by the CALPHAD approach. Considerable efforts in this direction have been made already and commercial databases for high entropy alloys are available, e.g., TCHEA4 and PanHEA. We focus on comparing our new thermodynamic database with computations using TCHEA4 for two section planes, i.e., quaternary AlxCrFe2Ni2 and quinary AlxCoCrFeNi, where x is the stochiometric coefficient. According to our new thermodynamic description a single-phase field BCC-B2 is stable over a wider temperature range in both section planes, giving rise to dual-phase microstructures along solid state phase transformation pathways. In the section plane AlxCoCrFeNi the two-phase field BCC-B2 + σ predicted by the new database is stable between 600 and 800°C, while in TCHEA4 this phase field extends to nearly 1000°C. Furthermore, our new database showed that the solidification interval with primary BCC-B2 phase in quinary as well as quaternary section planes is narrow, being in a good agreement with presented micro-segregation measurements. Additionally, computed phase fields and phase-field boundaries in the quinary section plane correspond well to the experimental results reported in the literature.

Abstract:The phase diagram of the Al-Cu binary system was reinvestigated experimentally. The current study was designed to contribute to a better description of those parts of the phase diagram which are disputed in the current scientific literature, and in addition, to study the phase equilibria at 300 °C. The melting behavior of the θ-phase was confirmed to be peritectic. A metastable congruent solidification of the θ-phase was observed from the microstructural examination of as-cast samples. The location of the liquidus curve in this region of the phase diagram was more accurately defined using DSC measurements taken at slow-heating rates (1 °C min−1). The temperature stability of the ζ-phase was reevaluated and was found to lie in the range 373–597 °C. The phase boundaries of the γ′ + ε′ two-phase field were experimentally defined. Difficulties in defining the γ′/δ transition were addressed by a combined EDX/XRD investigation of more than ten samples that had been annealed in the temperature range of 500 to 750 °C. The (γ′ + δ) two-phase field was postulated from XRD studies of quenched samples. The temperature of the ordering reaction γ ↔ γ′ within the γ(γ′) + β phase field was experimentally determined to be 779.6 °C. All other parts of the Al-Cu phase diagram studied here were found to be in very good agreement with the most recent previous descriptions.

Atomic parameter diagrams and the pattern recognition method have been used for finding the formation criteria of ternary alloy phases of this type. Some empirical relationships found may be extended to study the formation of ternary alloy phases of other types.

Abstract:High entropy alloys (HEA) show promise as a new type of high-performance structural material. Their vast degrees of freedom provide for extensive opportunities to design alloys with tailored properties. However, the compositional complexities of HEAs present great challenges for alloy design. Current approaches have shown limited reliability in accounting for the compositional regions of single solid solution and composite phases. We present a phenomenological method, analyzing binary phase diagrams to predict HEA phase formation on the hypothesis that the structural stability of HEAs is encoded within. Accordingly, we introduce a small number of phase-diagram inspired parameters and employ machine learning to partition the formation region of 500+ reported HEA compositions. The model achieved a single phase HEA prediction rate >80 %. To validate our method, we demonstrated the capability of this method in predicting HEA solid solution phases with and without intermetallics in 30 randomly selected complex compositions, with a success rate of 77 %. The presented efficient search approach with high predictive capability can be exploited to complement computation-intense methods in providing a powerful platform for the design of high entropy alloys.

Abstract:In the present study, an approach based on binary Gibbs energy-composition (G-x) plots is used for understanding the phase constitution in high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Equimolar HEAs CoCrMnNi, CoCr-CuMnNi and AlCoCrMnNi were made using vacuum arc melting and heat treated for 24 h at 1000 degrees C. XRD and SEM were used for the characterization of constituent phases. A method based on the G-x plots of binary sub-systems was devised for the interpretation of the constituent phases in these alloys and a few other HEAs reported in the literature, namely CoCrFeMnNi and CoCuFeMnNi. The competition between phases and demixing tendencies were correlated with the G-x plots. These plots revealed that in CoCrMnNi and CoCrFeMnNi, tendency for formation of intermetallic phases and demixing were absent. This correlated well with their single-phase disordered FCC (A1) microstructure. On the other hand, the CoCrCuMnNi alloy had a duplex microstructure consisting of two FCC phases that can be attributed to the strong demixing tendency for FCC phase in the Cr-Cu system. The microstructure of the CoCuFeMnNi consisted only single FCC phase. Though, two of the constituent binaries showed tendency for demixing of this FCC phase, it is not strong enough to cause immiscibility. The AlCoCrMnNi alloy gave a duplex microstructure of an ordered (B2) and a disordered (A2) BCC phase. G-x plots showed that the competition from B2 phase in binaries is so strong that its formation inevitably occurred in this HEA. Such crucial insights into how strongly the thermodynamics of the binary sub-systems control the phase constitution in HEAs are offered by the present approach. Although the results can in principle be interpreted using comprehensive Calphad calculations, one requires reliable multicomponent Gibbs energy databases to do so. The approach presented here is rather simple, as it requires only Gibbs energy functions of relevant phases of the constituent binary systems. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In order to facilitate the computational design of new amalgams for novel dental alloys, the phase equilibria, phase diagrams and thermodynamic functions for Ag-Hg and Cu-Hg binary systems are explored in this work, based on the CALPHAD framework and experimental characterizations. The Gibbs free energies of the solution phases as well as the stoichiometric phases are calculated, with the aid of enthalpies of mixing, activities, enthalpies of formation, and phase equilibrium data. The thermodynamic descriptions provided in this work enable the stabilities of each phase at various temperatures and compositions to be well described, which contribute to the establishment of a general database to design novel metallic dental materials. Abstract:We develop an approach to determining Lennard-Jones embedded-atom method potentials for alloys and use these to determine the solid-liquid phase diagrams for binary metallic alloys using Kofke’s Gibbs-Duhem integration technique combined with semigrand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that it is possible to produce a wide range of experimentally observed binary phase diagrams (with no intermetallic phases) by reference to the atomic sizes and cohesive energies of the two elemental materials. In some cases, it is useful to employ a single adjustable parameter to adjust the phase diagram (we provided a good choice for this free parameter). Next, we perform a systematic investigation of the effect of relative atomic sizes and cohesive energies of the elements on the binary phase diagrams. We then show that this approach leads to good agreement with several experimental binary phase diagrams. The main benefit of this approach is not the accurate reproduction of experimental phase diagrams, but rather to provide a method by which material properties can be continuously changed in simulation studies. This is one of the keys to the use of atomistic simulations to understand mechanisms and properties in a manner not available to experiment.

Abstract:The alloy design for equiatomic multi-component alloys was rationalized by statistically analyzing the atomic size difference, mixing enthalpy, mixing entropy, electronegativity, valence electron concentration among constituent elements in solid solutions forming high entropy alloys and amorphous alloys. Solid solution phases form and only form when the requirements of the atomic size difference, mixing enthalpy and mixing entropy are all met. The most significant difference between the solid solution forming high entropy alloys and bulk metallic glasses lies in the atomic size difference. These rules provide valuable guidance for the future development of high entropy alloys and bulk metallic glasses.

Abstract:Despite the importance of Al and Ta as alloying elements for Co- and Ni-base alloys, there has been limited research on the phase equilibria in the Al-Co-Ta and Al-Ni-Ta systems. Additionally, the available data are sparse and sometimes inconsistent due to the peculiar experimental challenges of these systems. Based on that, a comprehensive and critical evaluation of their phase equilibria is useful in view of further experimental and computational studies. Within this framework, the Al-Co-Ta and Al-Ni-Ta ternary systems and the respective binary subsystems are here critically assessed. All available literature investigations are analyzed and as a result, a set of self-consistent diagrams and tables are presented, reporting crystal structure data, liquidus projections, isothermal sections, etc.

Abstract:Abstract High entropy alloys (HEAs) contain near equimolar amounts of five or more elements and are a compelling space for materials design. In the design of HEAs, great emphasis is placed on identifying thermodynamic conditions for single-phase and multi-phase stability regions, but this process is hindered by the difficulty of navigating stability relationships in high-component spaces. Traditional phase diagrams use barycentric coordinates to represent composition axes, which require ( N – 1) spatial dimensions to represent an N -component system, meaning that HEA systems with N > 4 components cannot be readily visualized. Here, we propose forgoing barycentric composition axes in favor of two energy axes: a formation-energy axis and a ‘reaction energy’ axis. These Inverse Hull Webs offer an information-dense 2D representation that successfully captures complex phase stability relationships in N ≥ 5 component systems. We use our proposed diagrams to visualize the transition of HEA solid-solutions from high-temperature stability to metastability upon quenching, and identify important thermodynamic features that are correlated with the persistence or decomposition of metastable HEAs.
