Abstract:Soft robots have recently evoked extensive attention due to their abilities to work effectively in unstructured environments. As an actuation technology of soft robots, dielectric elastomers exhibit many intriguing attributes such as large strain and high energy density. This work presents a novel dielectric elastomer based soft crawling robot inspired by inchworms. To fill the need of control of the soft robot, a model describing the interaction between the dielectric elastomer actuator and the environment is proposed, which takes inertia, viscoelasticity and friction into consideration. The model can well describe the robot's dynamic performances and the modelling approach used here can be extended to other dielectric elastomer actuators with complicated geometries for control purposes. The obtained model allows us to design a feedforward plus feedback control scheme for the robot to achieve desired motion. Simulation shows fast response and good tracking performances which are further confirmed by the experiments.
Untethered Soft Robot Capable of Stable Locomotion Using Soft Electrostatic Actuators

Abstract:This paper reports an untethered soft robot using soft electrostatic actuators. The robot consists of a deformable body driven by dielectric elastomer actuators, and two paper-based feet driven by electroadhesion actuators. The use of light-weight batteries and small-volume amplifiers contributes to the development of this untethered soft robot. Inspired by inchworms, this untethered soft robot can achieve locomotion through alternate expansion/contraction of its deformable body and adhesion/detachment of its two paper-based feet. The strong electroadhesion ensures a stable locomotion, and the large voltage-induced deformation and fast response of the robotic body leads to a velocity of 0.02 body length/s. This velocity is higher than that of untethered soft crawling robots based on pneumatic actuators or ionic polymer metal composites. The deformation of the robotic body is studied through finite element analysis. Compared to traditional hard robots, soft robots are found to be more susceptible to dissipative processes, including charging/discharging the actuators, dielectric relaxation and viscoelastic effects. These dissipative effects on this untethered soft robot are also investigated in this paper.

Abstract:Inspired from the natural invertebrates like worms and starfish, we propose a novel elastomeric smart structure. The smart structure can function as a soft robot. The soft robot is made from a flexible elastomer as the body and driven by dielectric elastomer as the muscle. Finite element simulations based on nonlinear field theory are conducted to investigate the working condition of the structure, and guide the design of the smart structure. The effects of the pre-stretch, structural stiffness and voltage on the performance of the smart structure are investigated. This work can guide the design of soft robot.

Abstract:Compared to the conventional rigid robots, the soft robots driven by soft active materials possess unique advantages with their high adaptability in field exploration and seamless interaction with human. As one type of soft robot, soft aquatic robots play important roles in the application of ocean exploration and engineering. However, the soft robots still face grand challenges, such as high mobility, environmental tolerance, and accurate control. Here, we design a soft robot with a fully integrated onboard system including power and wireless communication. Without any motor, dielectric elastomer (DE) membrane with a balloonlike shape in the soft robot can deform with large actuation, changing the total volume and buoyant force of the robot. With the help of pressure sensor, the robot can move to and stabilize at a designated depth by a closed-loop control. The performance of the robot has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Numerical results from the analysis agree well with the results from the experiments. The mechanisms of actuation and control may guide the further design of soft robot and smart devices.

Abstract:Soft robots have recently evoked extensive attention because of their abilities to work effectively in unstructured environments. As an actuation technology of soft robots, dielectric elastomers (DEs) exhibit many intriguing attributes such as large strain and high energy density. This paper presents a novel, DE-based, soft crawling robot inspired by inchworms. The kinematics of the soft crawling robot is explored, and a data-driven model is developed to facilitate the controller design. The overall controller incorporates a feedforward controller, a feedback controller, and a disturbance observer (DOB). The feedback controller and the DOB will compensate the disturbance and model uncertainties resulting from the obtained dynamic model and ensure robust performance of the robot under different conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified using experiments on surfaces made of different materials and with inclined angles.

Abstract:This work develops a fluidic soft robotic eel which combines the adaptability of soft material and the flexibility of eel-shaped body together. The soft eel-like robot consists of multiple soft actuation segments each of which is capable of bidirectional bending by two embedded symmetrical fluidic chambers. Propulsion will be produced when proper control rules are applied to the bending angles of the actuation segments. Robot design, prototype fabrication and system integration are described step by step. A motion controller based on central pattern generator (CPG) is designed for the soft eel-like robot by using identified parameters. Substantial experiments are implemented to evaluate the performance of the prototype. It is shown that the soft eel-like robot can flexibly perform linear motion and turning motion. Moreover, the soft eel-like robot keeps good continuity even when the parameters of the CPG-based controller changes. In general, the experimental results verify the effectiveness of the design and control methods for the soft eel-like robot, which provides a potential candidate to underwater exploration with limited space.
A gecko inspired fluid driven climbing robot

Abstract:A motor-less fast climbing robot driven by fluid is introduced in this study. Designed with a simple five-linkage and one-piston mechanism, the robot has kinematics similar to a gecko's motion. Due to bionic design of gecko, the robot has an advantage of climbing fast on flat surfaces with any slope angles, even overhanging surfaces. Applied with fluid driven and fluidic vacuuming, the robot can carry twice extra weight as its bodyweight on vertical climbing. As a result of motor-less design, the robot owns a unique benefit to get almost all power from the pressure of fluid working medium like water, compressed air, oil and etc., regardless of little energy supplied by internal batteries for low-power control circuit and solenoid valves. Especially for home application, the robot can get power from the pressure of tap water to finish a high-rise glass window cleaning by water-washing. This robot has potential applications to cleaning, fire lighting, painting, and repairing.

Abstract:Soft pneumatic actuators possess attributes of large deformation, high driving force and light weight in the application of soft robots and smart devices. However, most reported soft pneumatic actuators are with rigid hydraulic source such as motor driven pump, piston and pressurized reservoir. These rigid and heavy hydraulic sources limit the actuation and compliance of the soft robots. Inspired by the bladders and hydrostatic skeleton of natural creatures, we propose a soft hydraulic robot consisting of dielectric elastomer (DE) and hydrogel, exhibiting an excellent actuating performance. An inflated DE balloon functions as the soft hydraulic source, in which the pressure of the containing water can be tuned by voltage. Hydrogel chambers are connected to the DE balloon as the hydraulic actuator, deforming as a soft robotic gripper. A new analytical approach is proposed to describe the system's behaviors, which couples the electromechanical actuation of DE and the hydraulic deformation of hydrogel chamber. The proposed model is validated by good agreement between the numerical and experimental data. The proposed model could serve as a new tool for modeling and characterizing soft robots with hydraulic actuation. The working principles can guide the design and control of soft robots and smart structures.
A soft microrobot with highly deformable 3D actuators for climbing and transitioning complex surfaces

Abstract:The climbing microrobots have attracted growing attention due to their promising applications in exploration and monitoring of complex, unstructured environments. Soft climbing microrobots based on muscle-like actuators could offer excellent flexibility, adaptability, and mechanical robustness. Despite the remarkable progress in this area, the development of soft microrobots capable of climbing on flat/curved surfaces and transitioning between two different surfaces remains elusive, especially in open spaces. In this study, we address these challenges by developing voltage-driven soft small-scale actuators with customized 3D configurations and active stiffness adjusting. Combination of programmed strain distributions in liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and buckling-driven 3D assembly, guided by mechanics modeling, allows for voltage-driven, complex 3D-to-3D shape morphing (bending angle > 200°) at millimeter scales (from 1 to 10 mm), which is unachievable previously. These soft actuators enable development of morphable electroadhesive footpads that can conform to different curved surfaces and stiffness-variable smart joints that allow different locomotion gaits in a single microrobot. By integrating such morphable footpads and smart joints with a deformable body, we report a multigait, soft microrobot (length from 6 to 90 mm, and mass from 0.2 to 3 g) capable of climbing on surfaces with diverse shapes (e.g., flat plane, cylinder, wavy surface, wedge-shaped groove, and sphere) and transitioning between two distinct surfaces. We demonstrate that the microrobot could navigate from one surface to another, recording two corresponding ceilings when carrying an integrated microcamera. The developed soft microrobot can also flip over a barrier, survive extreme compression, and climb bamboo and leaf.

Abstract:In this paper a hybrid solution to the problem of robots climbing on featureless surface is presented. The research focus of wall climbing robot is on the adhesion and the mechanism of locomotion. An efficient, robust, standalone and scalable mechanism is often desired for such robots to perform many critical tasks. The performance of electrostatic adhesion can be enhanced by using flexible and soft elastic material as the dielectric to improve its resistance against peeling force. A novel multiple stage fabrication process of the layered hybrid adhesive using blade coating technique is proposed in this work. This yields a track structure that is compliant on the surface, electrically functional, and geometrically controllable. When excited by high voltage, the track becomes an active actuator. It also passively adheres to smooth surfaces with the elastomer effect. Inspired by the climbing strategy of the gecko, a solution for track locomotion is proposed by utilizing electrostatic, elastomer adhesion and tail forces simultaneously. The biomimetic tail is implemented with torsion spring design. As a result, the robot prototype ELAD (electrostatic and elastomer adhesion) can climb a slope of 80° on smooth surfaces at speed of 4cm/s, and perch for more than 2h using on-board power. Effects of tail design and hybrid adhesion with force analysis are numerically evaluated and presented. It is also demonstrated that the elastomer material properties for the hybrid adhesive are suitable for stable climb on vertical surfaces. Further, analysis has shown that the hybrid adhesive is able to work on surfaces with roughness value Ra within 300nm.

Wireless soft millirobots for climbing three-dimensional surfaces in confined spaces

Abstract:Wireless soft-bodied robots at the millimeter scale allow traversing very confined unstructured terrains with minimal invasion and safely interacting with the surrounding environment. However, existing untethered soft millirobots still lack the ability of climbing, reversible controlled surface adhesion, and long-term retention on unstructured three-dimensional (3D) surfaces, limiting their use in biomedical and environmental applications. Here, we report a fundamental peeling-and-loading mechanism to allow untethered soft-bodied robots to climb 3D surfaces by using both the soft-body deformation and whole-body motion of the robot under external magnetic fields. This generic mechanism is implemented with different adhesive robot footpad designs, allowing vertical and inverted surface climbing on diverse 3D surfaces with complex geometries and different surface properties. With the unique robot footpad designs that integrate microstructured adhesives and tough bioadhesives, the soft climbing robot could achieve controllable adhesion and friction to climb 3D soft and wet surfaces including porcine tissues, which paves the way for future environmental inspection and minimally invasive medicine applications.

Abstract:Soft robots driven by stimuli-responsive materials have their own unique advantages over traditional rigid robots such as large actuation, light weight, good flexibility and biocompatibility. However, the large actuation of soft robots inherently co-exists with difficulty in control with high precision. This article presents a soft artificial muscle driven robot mimicking cuttlefish with a fully integrated on-board system including power supply and wireless communication system. Without any motors, the movements of the cuttlefish robot are solely actuated by dielectric elastomer which exhibits muscle-like properties including large deformation and high energy density. Reinforcement learning is used to optimize the control strategy of the cuttlefish robot instead of manual adjustment. From scratch, the swimming speed of the robot is enhanced by 91% with reinforcement learning, reaching to 21 mm/s (0.38 body length per second). The design principle behind the structure and the control of the robot can be potentially useful in guiding device designs for demanding applications such as flexible devices and soft robots.
PiezoClimber: Versatile and Self‐Transitional Climbing Soft Robot with Bioinspired Highly Directional Footpads

Abstract:Soft climbing robots are developed based on a piezoelectric actuator and two bioinspired footpads with directional friction. The robots demonstrate versatile climbing on both smooth surfaces and rough surfaces. With intrinsic flexibility and efficient locomotion, the robots are demonstrated to deliver a cargo on transitional terrains. Scaled piezo‐based robots are also demonstrated with increased traversal ability on inclined complex terrains. The ability to climb is crucial for terrestrial robots to expand their scope of application with improved navigation capacity. While some soft climbing devices are available, they often lack versatility when it comes to adapting to rough surfaces and changes in terrains. In this regard, a piezo‐based soft robot with bioinspired footpads has been developed that can deliver superior climbing performance. Through their unprecedented directional friction, these footpads enable the robot to complete rigorous climbing tasks on surfaces with a climbing angle of 0–180° and a variety of roughness from ultra‐smooth to millimeter‐scale. With a unique slide‐swing gait, the robot is able to complete fast climbing on a 90° substrate at a speed of 1.4 body lengths per second (BL/s) and self‐transitional climbing on surfaces with a roughness difference of 11 μm and an angle change of 60° in 5 s without active control. A scaled down version of this climber is also presented with increased mobility to traverse steps of 3 body heights and slits of 0.75 BH effectively. In summary, the development of this soft robot with highly directional footpads paves the way for soft robots to navigate varied surfaces and ascend challenging terrains with improved mobility.

Abstract:A variety of soft wall-climbing robots have been developed that can move in certain patterns. Most of these soft robots can only move on conventional surfaces and lack adaptability to complex surfaces. Improving the adaptability of soft robots on complex surfaces is still a challenging problem. To this end, we study the layered structure of the starfish tube foot and the valve flap structure in the water vascular system, and use an ultrasonic stress detector to study the stiffness distribution of the arm structure. Inspired by the motion of the starfish, we present a bionic soft wall-climbing robot, which is driven by two groups of pneumatic feet and achieves body bending through active adaptation layers. We design the structure of the foot to flex to provide driving force, and there are suction cups at the end of the foot to provide suction. The soft foot has a simple structure design, adapts to a variety of surfaces, and does not damage the surface of the substrate. Variable stiffness layers achieve stiffness changes by the principle of line blocking. The Central Pattern Generator theory is introduced to coordinately control the multiple feet of the robot. After experiments, we verify the adaptability of the soft robot to curved surfaces. The research may provide a reference for the design and development of crawling soft robots on complex surfaces.

Dexterous electrical-driven soft robots with reconfigurable chiral-lattice foot design

Abstract:Dexterous locomotion, such as immediate direction change during fast movement or shape reconfiguration to perform diverse tasks, are essential animal survival strategies which have not been achieved in existing soft robots. Here, we present a kind of small-scale dexterous soft robot, consisting of an active dielectric elastomer artificial muscle and reconfigurable chiral-lattice foot, that enables immediate and reversible forward, backward and circular direction changes during fast movement under single voltage input. Our electric-driven soft robot with the structural design can be combined with smart materials to realize multimodal functions via shape reconfigurations under the external stimulus. We experimentally demonstrate that our dexterous soft robots can reach arbitrary points in a plane, form complex trajectories, or lower the height to pass through a narrow tunnel. The proposed structural design and shape reconfigurability may pave the way for next-generation autonomous soft robots with dexterous locomotion.
Switchable Adhesion Actuator for Amphibious Climbing Soft Robot

Abstract:Climbing soft robots are of tremendous interest in both science and engineering due to their potential applications in intelligent surveillance, inspection, maintenance, and detection under environments away from the ground. The challenge lies in the design of a fast, robust, switchable adhesion actuator to easily attach and detach the vertical surfaces. Here, we propose a new design of pneumatic-actuated bioinspired soft adhesion actuator working both on ground and under water. It is composed of extremely soft bilayer structures with an embedded spiral pneumatic channel resting on top of a base layer with a cavity. Rather than the traditional way of directly pumping air out of the cavity for suction in hard polymer-based adhesion actuator, we inflate air into the top spiral channel to deform into a stable 3D domed shape for achieving negative pressure in the cavity. The characterization of the maximum shear adhesion force of the proposed soft adhesion actuator shows strong and rapid reversible adhesion on multiple types of smooth and semi-smooth surfaces. Based on the switchable adhesion actuator, we design and fabricate a novel load-carrying amphibious climbing soft robot (ACSR) by combining with a soft bending actuator. We demonstrate that it can operate on a wide range of foreign horizontal and vertical surfaces including dry, wet, slippery, smooth, and semi-smooth ones on ground and also under water with certain load-carrying capability. We show that the vertical climbing speed can reach about 286 mm/min (1.6 body length/min) while carrying over 200g object (over 5 times the weight of ACSR itself) during climbing on ground and under water. This research could largely push the boundaries of soft robot capabilities and multifunctionality in window cleaning and underwater inspection under harsh environment.

Abstract:Abstract Inspection robots that can be used to inspect man-made structures have significant potential for industrial applications, but existing soft robots are not well suited for the exploration of complex metallic structures with many obstacles. This paper proposes a soft climbing robot well suited for such conditions as the robot uses feet with a controllable magnetic adhesion. It uses soft inflatable actuators to control this adhesion as well as the deformation of the body. The proposed robot consists of a robot body that can bend and lengthen, robot feet that can magnetically adhere to and detach from metallic surface, and rotational joints connecting each foot to the body to give the robot additional flexibility. It combines extensional soft actuators for the deformation of the body and contractile linear actuators for the robot feet, and the robot can produce complex deformations of the body that allow it to overcome a variety of scenarios. The capabilities of the proposed robot were verified through the implementation of three scenarios on metallic surfaces: crawling, climbing, and transitioning between surfaces. The robots could crawl or climb nearly interchangeably, could transition to and from horizontal surfaces to either upward or downward vertical surfaces.

Abstract:A wall climbing robot with crawler type, using electrostatic adhesion pads (EAP), which enables strong adaptability to wide range of wall surfaces, relatively light weight, simple structure and low power consumption, has been proposed in this paper. Firstly, the principle of the electrostatic adhesion and the equivalent calculation of adhesion force are presented. Secondly, the robot quasi-static force analysis is discussed for the safety of the robot on the wall. Furthermore, the electrostatic adhesion pads are designed and manufactured, and the electrostatic adhesion force (EAF) of the electrostatic adhesion pads has been experimented on the variety of wall materials. Finally, a wall climbing robot prototype is designed and the performance tests of the robot are accomplished on different wall surfaces.

A Novel Worm-inspired Wall Climbing Robot with Sucker-microspine Composite Structure.

Abstract:The wall climbing robot is designed by utilizing the foot design composed of the suckers and microspines. The microspine structure in which each microspine is independently attached to the soft sponge can adapt to the unevenness of the wall and increase frictional resistance for the suction cup. The main parameters of the structure is determined through the computer simulation, theoretical derivation and experimental testing. The principle of this composite structure is verified through a large number of experiments. In combination with the above mentioned sucker-microspine composite structure and the movement of the imitation worm, a new type of wall climbing robot is proposed. The proposed robot is very capable of carrying heavy loads and suitable to be used as wall mobile platform compared with the conventional multi-foot and wheel type wall climbing robots.

Abstract:Arthropods like stick insects have remarkable locomotion performance to climb vertical surfaces with their wet adhesion pads. This paper focuses on the development of a novel wet adhesion pad for wall-climbing robots that can scale walls. According to the morphology of insects' pads, mechanism of wet adhesive is analyzed. A novel wet adhesive pad with microstructure based on combining electroforming process with soft lithography is explored. Characteristic test results show that microstructures on the surface of pads fabricated by the proposed technique can improve the wet adhesive ability effectively. The design, manufacture, and test of a hexapod climbing robot prototype are also discussed. Experimental results show that the climbing ability of the robot with the pads is exceptional; the robot can climb up to more than 80. sloped surface and stick to the vertical surface statically.
