Abstract:The feasibility of crystal LiF as salt in directly fluorinating SEI is verified, and its fluorination mechanisms as well as anti‐acidification of electrolyte are explored. The dissolved LiF is encapsulated by solvent‐/salt‐derived organic skins to promote the fluorinated SEI. Meanwhile, the presence of LiF in electrolytes suppresses the production of acid species to mitigate electrolyte acidification and SEI degradation. Lithium fluoride (LiF) facilitates robust and fast‐ion‐transport solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium metal batteries. Fluorinated solvents/salts are ubiquitously employed to introduce LiF into SEI through electrochemical decomposition, but this approach is usually at the expense of their continuous consumption. A direct approach to fluorinate SEI that employs crystal LiF is limited by its poor solubility in the current battery electrolyte formulation. Dissolving crystal LiF in high‐dielectric‐constant solvents, like ethylene carbonate (EC) is nearly neglected. Herein, the feasibility of directly fluorinating SEI by the addition of crystal LiF in aprotic electrolyte with the assistance of EC is verified, and its mechanisms in fluorination of SEI and anti‐acidification of electrolyte are explored. The dissolved LiF is encapsulated by solvent‐/salt‐derived organic skins to promote the fluorinated SEI. Meanwhile, the presence of LiF in electrolyte alters hazardous thermodynamic equilibrium, suppressing the production of acid species to mitigate electrolyte acidification and SEI degradation. Such collective benefits yield a capacity retention ratio of ≈88% after 150 cycles at a high areal capacity (4.5 mAh cm−2) in Li||NCM622 cells. This facile and effective fluorination of SEI contributes to an in‐depth understanding of SEI formation and rational design of well‐performing lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Polyethylene oxide (PEO)‐based polymer solid electrolytes (PSE) have been pursued for the next‐generation extremely safe and high‐energy‐density lithium metal batteries due to their exceptional flexibility, manufacturability, and lightweight nature. However, the practical application of PEO‐PSE has been hindered by low ionic conductivity, limited lithium‐ion transfer number ( t Li+ ), and inferior stability with lithium metal. Herein, an ultrathin composite solid‐state electrolyte (CSSE) film with a thickness of 20 μm, incorporating uniformly dispersed two‐dimensional fluorinated boron nitride (F‐BN) nanosheet fillers (F‐BN CSSE) is fabricated via a solution‐casting process. The integration of F‐BN effectively reduces the crystallinity of the PEO polymer matrix, creating additional channels that facilitate lithium‐ion transport. Moreover, the presence of F‐BN promotes an inorganic phase‐dominated electrolyte interface film dominated by LiF, Li 2 O, and Li 3 N on the lithium anode surface, greatly enhancing the stability of the electrode‐electrolyte interface. Consequently, the F‐BN CSSE exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 0.11 mS cm −1 at 30°C, high t Li+ of 0.56, and large electrochemical window of 4.78 V, and demonstrates stable lithium plating/striping behavior with a voltage of 20 mV for 640 h, effectively mitigating the formation of lithium dendrites. When coupled with LiFePO 4 , the as‐assembled LiFePO 4 |F‐BN CSSE|Li solid‐state battery achieves a high capacity of 142 mAh g −1 with an impressive retention rate of 82.4% after 500 cycles at 5 C. Furthermore, even at an ultrahigh rate of 50 C, a capacity of 37 mAh g −1 is achieved. This study provides a novel and reliable strategy for the design of advanced solid‐state electrolytes for high‐rate and long‐life lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:We were able to demonstrate excellent cycling performance of Li-metal anodes in carbonate electrolytes by increasing the Li bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI) concentration to similar to 10 M. The high concentration (10 M) of FSI anion enabled interphases of high F content on both Li-metal anode and Ni-rich NMC (nickelmanganese- cobalt) cathode surfaces. Such F-rich interphases effectively suppressed Li dendrite formation, as demonstrated by a high Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency of similar to 99.3%, and stabilized the carbonatemolecules against oxidation at high cutoff voltages of 4.6 V on the surface of LiNi0.Mn-6(0).Co-2(0).O-2(2) (NMC622). The combination of unique stabilization on both Li-metal anode and NMC622 cathodes enabled high-energy Li-metal batteries constructed on the aggressive chemistry. Under the harsh conditions of a high charge voltage of 4.6 V and high loading of 2.5 mAh/cm(2), the NMC622 vertical bar vertical bar Li cells retained similar to 86% of their original capacity after 100 cycles. The electrolyte strategy presented here offers unique guidelines for further optimizing beyond Li-ion chemistries.

Abstract:The cycling stability of high-energy-density lithium (Li) metal batteries is severely hindered by uneven deposition of Li, which is caused by the heterogeneity transport of Li ions in solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of Li metal anodes. LiF-rich SEI emerges as a promising solution to improve homogeneous transport of Li ions. Herein, constructing LiF-rich SEI by regulating the interaction between the polymer coating on Li metal anode and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) in electrolytes was demonstrated. The polymer coating with uniformly distributed polar functional groups can interact with intermediate decomposition products of FEC, promoting the formation of LiF. LiF-rich SEI ensures improved uniformity of Li deposition, which promises stable operation of Li metal batteries under practical conditions for 143 cycles in comparison with 89 cycles of control group. Moreover, a prototype pouch cell of 1.0 Ah maintains a capacity retention of 90% after 180 cycles. This work provides a fresh attempt to construct LiF-rich SEI by regulating the interaction between solvent and polymer for long-cycling Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal has to overcome key performance flaws before it can be used as the anode material for the next generation Li+ batteries. One of its major issues is Li dendrite growth and detachment, which causes safety issues and low Coulombic efficiency for Li metal batteries. Constructing a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) is considered to be the most straightforward solution to the Li anode interface defects. Here, we develop a facile stratagem of 2-(Fluorosulphonyl)difluoroacetic acid-treated Li foil to obtain a Li metal anode coated by the lithium fluoride and sulfide enriched composite layer (LiF/sulfide enriched Li). The experimental and theoretical simulations demonstrate that the ideal artificial SEI can induce uniform Li+ distribution at the interface and effectively inhibit dendrite growth. As results, the LiF/sulfide enriched Li symmetrical cells exhibit excellent cycling stability and low Li deposition overpotential, which maintain a low overpotential of ∼ 10 mV for over 1000 h at 1 mA cm−2 in an ether electrolyte of DME/DOL + LiTFSI and steadily cycles for 350 h in a carbonate electrolyte of EC/EMC + LiPF6. Furthermore, full cells assembled with NCM811 and sulfur cathode exhibit enhanced cyclability. This facile and controllable stratagem provides a more practical possibility for modifying the Li metal anode.
In Situ Construction of a LiF/LiCl-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Lithium Ion Unimpeded Transport

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries have attracted significant research attention because of their satisfactory specific capacity and low overpotential. However, uneven Li deposition and uncontrolled dendrite growth limit the further development of this technique. In this study, we propose the addition of C4H2Cl2S to the electrolyte to induce Li deposition and inhibit Li dendrite growth. The additive reacts with the surface of the lithium metal anode to promote the decomposition of TFSI(-)anionic groups and participate in the film formation reaction, which is confirmed by density functional theory calculation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results. This results in the formation of a dense and robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) rich in LiF/LiCl, which enhances interphase reactivity and promotes the flux distribution of lithium ions, significantly facilitating the unimpeded transport of Li+ and effectively inhibiting the growth of Li dendrites. Furthermore, the excellent mechanical strength of LiF/LiCl, the key component of the SEI, effectively inhibits the SEI rupture caused by the increase in volume of lithium metal during plating/stripping. The assembled Li||Li battery exhibited a stable cycle of over 2200 h (current density: 1 mA cm(-2), deposition capacity: 1 mAh cm(-2)). In addition, the Li-S battery also showed excellent magnification performance and excellent cycle stability; after 500 cycles at 1C, the capacity remained at 659 mAh g(-1). This study provides a simple and convenient method for constructing an SEI with strong mechanical toughness and high flux to improve the cycle stability of lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Significance Li metal is one of the most promising anodes for rechargeable batteries due to its large capacity, but its performance is plagued by high chemical reactivity, forming an unstable Li–electrolyte interface. Lithium fluoride has been recently touted as a promising material to improve this interface; however, its intrinsic protective role for Li remains uncertain, hindering design of improved Li interfaces. We demonstrate that the LiF-enriched interface undergoes significant modification as Li + ions are cycled through it, and thus that the ensuing solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) repair process from the electrolyte is critical to achieve Li protection.
Fluorinating the Solid Electrolyte Interphase by Rational Molecular Design for Practical Lithium-Metal Batteries

Abstract:The lifespan of practical lithium (Li)-metal batteries is severely hindered by the instability of Li-metal anodes. Fluorinated solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) emerges as a promising strategy to improve the stability of Li-metal anodes. The rational design of fluorinated molecules is pivotal to construct fluorinated SEI. Herein, design principles of fluorinated molecules are proposed. Fluoroalkyl (-CF2CF2-) is selected as an enriched F reservoir and the defluorination of the C-F bond is driven by leaving groups on beta-sites. An activated fluoroalkyl molecule (AFA), 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorobutane-1,4-diol dinitrate is unprecedentedly proposed to render fast and complete defluorination and generate uniform fluorinated SEI on Li-metal anodes. In Li-sulfur (Li-S) batteries under practical conditions, the fluorinated SEI constructed by AFA undergoes 183 cycles, which is three times the SEI formed by LiNO3. Furthermore, a Li-S pouch cell of 360 Wh kg(-1) delivers 25 cycles with AFA. This work demonstrates rational molecular design principles of fluorinated molecules to construct fluorinated SEI for practical Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:The halide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have received significant attention due to their high ionic conductivity and desirable compatibility with cathode materials. However, the reduction potential of the halide is still >0.6 V (versus Li/Li+). Reduction stability is still one of the challenges that need to be addressed. The fluorides have a wide electrochemical stability window due to the large electronegativity of F–. In contrast, Li3YBr6 (LYB) bromides have a narrower electrochemical window, although they have high lithium ion conductivity (>10–3 S cm–1). Herein, a fluorine doping strategy is employed. The interfacial stability between fluoride-doped bromides and lithium metal is researched by cycling of lithium symmetric cells. Li plating/stripping can maintain over 1000 h at 0.75 mA cm–2. Interfacial protection mechanisms investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A fluoride-rich interfacial layer is formed in situ during the cycle, which achieves inhibition of the reduction. The Li metal treated fluorine doping of LYB exhibits significant potential in full cells. In fact, the induction of a stable in situ interfacial layer by fluorine doping can effectively improve the interfacial stability of bromides to lithium metal. Fluorine-doped modification offers a new attempt to realize lithium metal applications in all-solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:Three Li‐salts are selected to reveal the effect and role of F‐based Li‐salts on the SEI characteristics. It is shown that the chemical structure is more significant than the molecular size and the F contents, and thus the performances of cells using LiPFSI are slightly better than LiTFSI and much better than LiFSI. LiF‐rich solid‐electrolyte‐interphase (SEI) can suppress the formation of lithium dendrites and promote the reversible operation of lithium metal batteries. Regulating the composition of naturally formed SEI is an effective strategy, while understanding the impact and role of fluorine (F)‐based Li‐salts on the SEI characteristics is unavailable. Herein, LiFSI, LiTFSI, and LiPFSI are selected to prepare solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) with poly(ethylene oxide) and polyimide, investigating the effects of molecular size, F contents and chemical structures (F‐connecting bonds) of Li‐salts and revealing the formation of LiF in the SEI. It is shown that the F‐connecting bond is more significant than the molecular size and F element contents, and thus the performances of cells using LiPFSI are slightly better than LiTFSI and much better than LiFSI. The SPE containing LiPFSI can generate a high amount of LiF, and SPEs containing LiPFSI and LiTFSI can generate Li3N, while there is no Li3N production in the SEI for the SPE containing LiFSI. The preferential breakage bonds in LiPFSI are related to its position to Li anode, where Li‐metal as the anode is important in forming LiF, and consequently the LiPFSI reduction mechanism is proposed. This study will boost other energy storage systems beyond Li‐ion chemistries.

Abstract:Lithium-metal batteries are promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage devices. However, notorious dendrite growth and an unstable interface between Li and electrolytes severely hamper the practical implantation of Li-metal anodes. Here, a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer with flexible organic components on the top and plentiful LiF together with lithiophilic Zn nanoparticles on the bottom is constructed on Li metal based on the spray quenching method. The fluorinated interface layer exhibits remarkable stability to shield Li from the aggressive electrolyte and restrain dendrite growth. Accordingly, the modified Li electrode delivers a stable cycling for over 400 cycles at 3 mA cm-2 in symmetric cells. An improved capacity retention is also achieved in a full cell with a LiFePO4 cathode. This novel design of the artificial SEI layer offers rational guidance for the further development of high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries.
Lewis acid fluorine-donating additive enables an excellent semi-solid-state electrolyte for ultra-stable lithium metal batteries

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal battery via in-situ polymerization is considered one of the most promising candidates for commercial applications with flexibility, favorable energy density and reliable safety. However, the undesirable side reactions and lithium dendrite growth are frequently observed due to the unstable electrode/electrolyte interface and the poor ion diffusion interfacial kinetics, giving rise to the low Coulombic efficiency and unsatisfactory lifespan of the lithium metal batteries. In this work, aluminum fluoride (AlF 3 ) Lewis acid additive was introduced into a three-dimensional crosslinked in-situ semi-solid-state polymer electrolyte via in-situ polymerization process. The results demonstrate that AlF 3 additive can not only immobilize anions to improve electrochemical properties, but also construct a robust and highly adhesive solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer with fast Li + diffusion kinetics to effectively protect Li metal anode from side reactions and lithium dendrite growth, which is attributed to attractive components of enriched LiF, lithiophilic Li-Al alloy and AlF 3 species. It is notable that the Li/Li symmetrical batteries deliver a stable Li stripping/plating cycling over 1700 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 , and the Li/LFP batteries achieve a favorable long-term cycling with a capacity retention of 93.5% over 345 cycles at 3 C rate. This strategy provides a distinctive insight to facilitate the commercial applications of lithium metal battery utilizing in-situ polymerized solid-state electrolyte.

Abstract:The creation of a fluorinated interphase has emerged as an effective strategy for improving Li‐metal anodes for applications in rechargeable high‐energy batteries. In contrast to the introduction of fluorine‐containing species through widely adopted electrolyte engineering (e.g., salt and fluorinated solvent additive), we reported a Li metal composite design in which LiF could locally redistribute on the Li metal surface in liquid electrolytes via a dissolution‐reprecipitation mechanism, and enable the formation of a high‐fluorine‐content solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). For validation, a Li/Li22Sn5/LiF ternary composite was investigated, where the as‐formed LiF‐rich SEI locked the active Li metal from a corrosive electrolyte. The Li/Li22Sn5/LiF anode displayed an impressive average Coulombic efficiency (∼99.2%) at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2 in a carbonate electrolyte and a remarkable cycling life of over 1600 h at 1 mA cm−2 and 2 mAh cm−2. Applied to a LiCoO2 full cell with a high cathode areal capacity of 4.0 mAh cm−2, a high capacity retention of ∼91.1% was realized for 100 cycles at 0.5 C in a wide potential range between 2.8 to 4.5 V with a low negative/positive ratio of 2:1. This design is conceptually different from the design employing the widely used fluorine‐containing electrolyte additive to introduce fluorine species in the SEI and provides an alternative approach to realize reliable Li metal batteries. Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) have gained much interest owing to the advantages of high specific energy density and safety performance. Nevertheless, the low ionic conductivity of the solid electrolyte and poor contact between lithium metal and electrolyte have hindered their widespread application. In this work, fluorine doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZOFx) was used to improve the ionic conductivity of the composite electrolyte, and then AlF3 was employed to construct a lithophilic layer on the surface of lithium anode, which can effectively improve the conformity of electrolyte and lithium metal. The LLZOF0.2 CSE exhibits not only high ionic conductivity of 3.9×10-4 S cm-1 but also a wide electrochemical window of 5.44 V and an improved Li+ transference number of 0.61. Furthermore, the adsorption and binding energies of LLZOF0.2 on lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LITFSI) were determined through calculations. The results indicate that LLZOF0.2 can reduce the binding energy of LiTFSI, and adsorb TFSI-, therefore increase the amount of free lithium ions. In addition, a lithophilic layer was constructed on the surface of the lithium metal. This layer composed of LiF and LiAlF4 effectively reduces interfacial resistance, lowers the overpotential of the symmetric cell, and inhibits the growth of dendrites. The experimental results indicate that the cell composed of LLZOF0.2 based CSE and Li@AlF3 demonstrates outstanding electrochemical performance. The capacity retention rate of the cell with LLZOF0.2 based CSE and LiAlF4 interphase is 86.9% after 300 cycles at 1C.

Interface Engineering Via Fluorinated Solid Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Li Batteries

Abstract:Solid electrolytes (SEs) are vital for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) since they replace the flammable liquid electrolytes to make the ASSBs safer and compacter. 1 In order to boost the energy density of ASSBs, a practical SE is not only expected possessing high ionic conductivity, but also good compatibility with both cathode and anode to allow the use of high-voltage cathode and Li metal. 2, 3 However, most of the developed SEs show limitations on directly contact with either high-voltage cathode materials or Li metal. As such, SE modification is required to address the interfacial issues between SE and electrodes. In this work, fluorinated sulfide- and halide-based SEs are proposed to stabilize the SE/Li metal and SE/high-voltage cathode interfaces, respectively. Our results firstly show that fluorinated argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSCl) can enhance the interfacial stability toward the Li metal anode. 4 The in-situ formed interface between Li and LPSCl 1−x F x are of highly fluorinated and condense, which enables ultrastable Li plating/stripping behavior over 250 hrs at a high current density of 6.37 mA cm −2 and a cutoff capacity of 5 mAh cm −2 . The Li metal treated by the LPSCl 1−x F x SE is then demonstrated to deliver good durability and rate capability in full cells. Other than anode side improvement, F is introduced into a superionic conductor Li 3 InCl 6 to widen the oxidation limit to over 6 V (vs. Li/Li + ). 5 Both experimental and computational results identify that F-containing passivating interphases are generated to contribute to the enhanced oxidation stability of Li 3 InCl 6-x F x and stabilization the surface of cathodes at high cut-off voltages. The optimized composition Li 3 InCl 4.8 F 1.2 is directly matched with bare high-voltage LiCoO 2 , enabling ASSBs to stably operate at room temperature at a cut-off voltage of 4.8 V (vs Li/Li + ). Our studies provide a new strategy of interface engineering by introducing F in SEs, realizing the good compatibility between SE and electrodes and opening up the applications of ASSBs. Abstract:Secondary batteries have shaped our modern life significantly, and high-energy-density rechargeable batteries are strongly required nowadays. However, practical Li-metal batteries have been hindered by short lifespan and safety concerns induced by Li dendrites during repeated cycles. The formation and growth of Li dendrites are mainly caused by unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li-metal anode. Therefore, stable SEI on Li-metal anode is highly anticipated to promote practical applications of Li-metal batteries. The fluorinated SEI emerges as a promising SEI to regulate the behaviors of Li deposition and then enhance the stability and safety of Li-metal batteries. In this perspective, we concisely review the current fundamental understanding and key progresses of fluorinated SEI in high-voltage Li-metal batteries. Finally, we suggest the challenges and possible research directions for further development of fluorinated SEI in practical Li-metal batteries.
CaF2 nanoparticles enabling LiF-dominated solid electrolyte interphase for dendrite-free and ultra-stable lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites and severe interfacial parasitic reactions on the Li anode are the primary obstacles to the practical application of lithium (Li) metal batteries. Effective artificial solid electrolyte interphase is capable of regulating uniform Li deposition and isolateing Li from electrolyte, thereby eliminating parasitic reactions. Herein, we rationally design a uniform LiF-dominated solid electrolyte interphase through an in-situ reaction between CaF2 nanoparticles and the Li anode, which allows dendrite-free Li deposition and restrains interfacial deterioration. Accordingly, the protective Li electrode demonstrated exceptional stability, sustaining over 6000 h at a current density of 2 mA cm-2 in symmetric cells and attaining over 1000 cycles with a low capacity decay rate of 0.015 % per cycle in coupling with LiFePO4 cathodes.
Artificial LiF‐Rich Interface Enabled by In‐Situ Electrochemical Fluorination for Stable Lithium‐Metal Batteries

Abstract:Lithium (Li)-metal batteries are promising next-generation energy storage systems. One drawback of uncontrollable electrolyte degradation causes them to form a fragile and nonuniform solid electrolyte interface (SEI). In this study, we proposed a fluorinated carbon nanotube (CNT) macrofilm (CMF) on Li metal as a hybrid anode, which can regulate the redox state at anode/electrolyte interface. Due to the favorable reaction energy between plating Li and fluorinated CNTs, the metal can be fluorinated directly to a LiF-rich SEI during the charging process, leading to a high Young's modulus (~2.0 GPa) and fast ionic transfer (~2.59×10–7 S cm–1). The obtained SEI can guide the homogeneous plating/stripping of Li during electrochemical processes while suppressing dendrites growth. In particular, the hybrid endowed full cells with substantially enhanced cyclability allows for high-capacity retention (~99.3%) and remarkable rate capacity. This work can extend fluorination technology into a platform to control artificial SEI formation in Li-metal batteries giving it stability with long-life performance.

Abstract:All-solid-state electrolytes provide a guarantee for the safe running of Li metal batteries (LMBs) with high energy density. Nevertheless, the low ionic conductivity and huge interfacial impedance between lithium anodes and electrolytes are the critical issues baffling their rapid development and practical application, particularly limiting their operation at room temperature. The introduction of ionic liquids (IL) is expected to solve the above problems. However, the effect of the IL-involved solid-state electrolytes on lithium dendrites suppression has not been clearly revealed and still necessitates in-depth evaluation. In this article, we report an in situ LiF-rich solidelectrolyte interphase (SEI) on the lithium anode triggered by reductive decomposition of IL and Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3-involved electrolyte. For the first time, the mechanism of SEI formed on Li metal based on IL-based solid-state electrolyte was unveiled. A combination of experimental and computational investigation manifests that the presence of Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 promotes the release of fluorine anion from IL, and a SEI layer with high content of LiF can be generated in situ through the reductive decomposition of wandering fluorine anion. Thanks to the high mechanical modulus from Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3, the symmetric Li|Li batteries equipped with synthesized solid-state composite electrolyte (SSCE) exhibit extremely stable Li plating/stripping behavior for more than 2700 h with a small polarization voltage of 50 mV at 0.1 mA cm-2. Moreover, the assembled solidstate Li|LiFePO4 batteries based on SSCE could operate steadily for 196 cycles at ambient temperature, with 90.7% capacity retention. These results provide a promising insight into the design of SSCE and realization of room temperature solid-state LMBs with high performance.
