Abstract:In the present work, we studied the effect of Lead-concentration (0–1 wt%) on the physical properties of zinc oxide thin films and its photo-detection properties. All films were deposited using Aerosol Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (AACVD) techniques with the same deposition parameters but at different Pb concentration changes. Films were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and optical spectroscopy. XRD revealed the formation of single-phase hexagonal ZnO thin films with preferred orientation changes from (002) to (100) at Pb concentration of 0.5wt% film. The crystallite size in deposited films is between 14 and 16 nm. The formation of nano-rods was also recorded in the films prepared with 0.5 and 1wt% lead. The band gap values have been estimated and increased with increased Pb doping. The response of the deposited films against UV light (365 nm, 6 micro-watt) is recorded with very high sensitivity at long times of exposure.

Abstract:The present paper demonstrates the effect of Zn ion doping on structural, electrical and optical properties of monoclinic CuO nanoparticles prepared via microwave combustion method. The crystal structure, optical and electrical properties of synthesized CuO and Zn-doped CuO samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction study, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction study, UV–Visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and photoconductivity technique. The XRD values show that the crystalline size of Zn-doped CuO nanoparticles was varied with Zn concentration and also it depends on the micro-strain and dislocation density of CuO lattice. FE-SEM and TEM images indicated that the synthesized samples are of the cube and rod-like structures in nature. The band gap of CuO nanoparticles has been calculated using Tauc’s plot and the result showed that the incorporation of Zn has decreased the bandgap of CuO. The I–V characterization study was performed to determine the electrical property of CuO and Zn-doped CuO films. From the results, it is observed that the photocurrent of CuO and Zn-doped CuO films is found to be greater in UV-light as compared to dark.

Abstract:ZnO has been reported to be a promising photocatalytic material for dye degradation. But the quick recombination of the photo-generated charge carriers and low stability due to photo corrosion has been a major drawback of these material. In addition to this, the large band gap of ZnO makes it inefficient for the utilization of Sun light, specially in the visible region. In order to overcome these demerits, various methods like modification of morphology, doping, forming composite, etc. have been adopted. This work reports the effect of Cu ion doping in ZnO nanomaterials on its photocatalytic characteristics. Pure and Cu ion doped ZnO (Cu:ZnO) nanopowders with varying Cu ion content from 0 to 20 wt% had been synthesized by hydrothermal method. Single phase of wurtzite hexagonal ZnO was formed up to 10 wt% of Cu doping into the ZnO, beyond which the samples have become biphasic with the introduction of CuO as secondary phase, showing that 10 wt% was the solubility limit of Cu in ZnO lattice. Average crystallite size calculated by Scherrer formula was in the range from 21.9 to 39.0 nm. Strain in pure and Cu:ZnO was calculated by Williamson and Hall analysis. Optical absorption analysis showed that the band gap had decreased from 3.25 to 3.11 eV with increasing Cu content. Near-band edge (NBE) and a broad yellow emission bands with the maxima respectively at 382 and 561 nm were observed in the photoluminescence spectra of Cu:ZnO. The photocatalytic activity of these samples was investigated by the oxidation of methyl orange dye under UV light as well as under Sun light irradiation. The results indicated that the photocatalytic degradation of the MO solution under UV irradiation shows 83.8% for ZnO whereas the 1% Cu:ZnO have degraded the best with 99.5% of MO under Sun light irradiation.

Effect of Cu doping on the optical properties of ZnO/PS nanocomposite systems

Abstract:ZnO films doped with different Cu concentration are prepared on porous silicon(PS) substrate by RF magnetron sputtering technique.PS samples are formed by electrochemical anodization on p-type(100) silicon wafer.The influence of different Cu doping concentration on the microstructure and optical properties of ZnO films are investigated by using X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM) and photoluminescence.The results of XRD show that all the samples have a strong diffraction peak and high preferential orientation in the(002) crystallographic direction.From the SEM images,it can be found that the ZnO nanoparticles sputtered from the target cover the porous silicon surface,exhibiting a smooth surface and obvious grain boundaries.The transmission spectrum show that all these films have a high transmittance ratio in the visible region and the transmittance ratio decreases with the incorporation Cu ion concentration increasing.The optical band edge decreases from 3.22 eV to 3.15 eV.The photoluminescence spectrum show that ZnO/PS nanocomposite formes a broad PL band including the blue,green emissions and red-orange emission.With the increase of Cu doping concentration,the intensity of the samples' emission peak decreases sharply.The blue and green emission from ZnO and red emission from PS are combined,thereby producing broad white light.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of Cu and Ni doping on the structural, wettability, optical, and photocatalytic properties of ZnO thin films. The co-doped thin films, with varying Ni concentrations, were deposited using a spray pyrolysis method onto pre-heated soda lime glass substrates. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite structure with preferred orientation primarily along the (002) plane, while crystallinity decreased with higher Ni concentrations. Scanning electron microscopy reveals a compact, adherent structure in all films, with Ni incorporation altering the surface morphology. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy identified characteristic absorption bands for metal-oxygen bonds. Optical analysis indicated that all thin films exhibited over 88% average transmittance in the visible region, accompanied by a red shift in the optical bandgap. Photoluminescence spectra exhibited a broad emission band in the visible region, indicating intrinsic and extrinsic defects induced by doping. Co-doping transforms the wettability character of ZnO thin films from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Finally, the photodegradation efficiency of the thin films against methylene blue under sunlight significantly increases from 72% to 92% with an increase in Ni concentration.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of the synthesis and characterization of Zn1−xCoxO (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05) nanopowders using a chemical co-precipitation approach. The structural, morphological, and vibrational properties of the resulting ZnO nanostructures were assessed through X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy to examine the influence of cobalt doping. Remarkably, a notable congruence between the experimental results and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the Co-doped ZnO system was achieved. Structural analysis revealed well-crystallized hexagonal wurtzite structures across all samples. The SEM images demonstrated the formation of spherical nanoparticles in all the samples. The vibrational properties confirmed the formation of a hexagonal wurtzite structure, with an additional Raman peak corresponding to the F2g vibrational mode characteristic of the secondary phase of ZnCo2O4 observed at a 5% cobalt doping concentration. Furthermore, a theoretical examination of cobalt doping’s impact on the elastic properties of ZnO demonstrated enhanced mechanical behavior, which improves stability, recyclability, and photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic study of the synthesized compositions for methylene blue (MB) dye degradation over 100 min of UV light irradiation demonstrated that Co doping significantly improves photocatalytic degradation. The material’s prolonged lifetime, reduced rate of photogenerated charge carrier recombination, and increased surface area were identified as pivotal factors accelerating the degradation process. Notably, the photocatalyst with a Zn0.99Co0.01O composition exhibited exceptional efficiency compared to that reported in the literature. It demonstrated high removal activity, achieving an efficiency of about 97% in a shorter degradation time. This study underscores the structural and photocatalytic advancements in the ZnO system, particularly at lower cobalt doping concentrations (1%). The developed photocatalyst exhibits promise for environmental applications owing to its superior photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The hunt for active components creates new opportunities to modify photocatalysis materials that we use on a daily basis to cleanse water from pollutants that pose a threat to human life and living organisms. The current study focuses on studying the structural, morphological, optical, electrical, and photocatalytic features of copper oxide (CuO). The work employs the sol-gel spin coating technique to investigate the structural, morphological, optical, electrical, and photocatalytic properties of copper oxide (CuO) doped with different concentrations (x = 5, 15, 25, and 50 wt %) of zinc (Zn). X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV–visible spectrophotometry (UV–Visible), and the four-point method were among the analytical techniques used to characterize the Cu 1-x Zn x O thin films. The films exhibit variation in thickness, ranging from 340 nm to 96 nm, as doping intensifies. Every film has a polycrystalline structure with crystallite sizes ranging from 27 to 51 nm, according to the results of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigation. The energy gap drops with increased doping, from 2.74 eV to 1.81 eV. The enhanced capacitance is elucidated by the presence of Zn particles within CuO nanostructures, which results in a notable enhancement of electrical conductivity. The introduction of Zn impurity into copper oxide resulted in a substantial enhancement in its photocatalysis activity when thin films of CuO doped with 50 wt% Zn were used, and the best degradation of orange II dye reached 30 %. It is considered that Zn-doped CuO can be an effective material for screening dyes using light, improving water quality, and addressing environmental difficulties.

Abstract:A co-doping of Cu and Ni on ZnO caused a strain in the lattice, as evident from the XRD peak shifts and a decrease in crystallite size due to Zener pinning. A variation in absorption intensity based on the defect energy levels generated due to doping was observed. A difference in energy of the emission and absorption spectra resulting from defects in the material and non-radiative decay was seen. A change in the band gap was observed with the change in dopant concentrations. Cu and Ni had preferential effects on ZnO which were opposite in certain instances and Ni doped was found beneficial for enhancing ferromagnetic properties in ZnO, while Cu doped was found suitable more for optical applications.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Doping strategies modify the optical and electrochemical characteristics of materials. In this research, we investigated the impact of Cu2⁺ doping in ZnO@ZnCdS nanocomposites synthesized via the co-precipitation approach. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the structural, morphological, optical, and electrochemical features of the samples using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Visible absorption, and photoluminescence (PL). Notably, Cu2⁺ doping induces changes in morphology, crystal size, absorption spectra, and band gap energy. Surface investigations reveal a flower-like structure, while XRD analysis indicates an increase in crystal size from 25.5 to 35.2 in thin films with copper content. The absorption spectra of UV–visible-doped ZnO@ZnCdS thin films exhibit reduced peak intensity upon Cu2⁺ addition. Also, optical absorption analysis shows a shift towards longer wavelengths in the emission of ZnO@ZnCdS due to Cu2⁺ inclusion during doping. Likewise, the band gap energy ranges from 1.37 eV to 2.22 eV for ZnO@ZnCdS and Cu2⁺ doped ZnO@ZnCdS, respectively, as determined using Tauc plots. PL spectrum of the Cu2⁺ doped ZnO@CdS nanocomposite indicates emissions in the blue and green regions. Specifically, under 325 nm excitation, the copper-doped material displays a prominent blue and a less intense red emission at 420 nm at 685 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the electrochemical analysis revealed that doping caused a reduction in Rct and an elevation in CSP. These results offer important considerations for the development of cutting-edge functional optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:RF sputtered undoped and Cu doped ZnO (CZO) thin films were deposited on unheated glass substrates using a mixed Cu2O and ZnO powders target at different Cu concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 wt%. The effects of copper concentration on the structural, electrical, optical and photocatalytic properties of CZO films have been studied. From XRD and Raman spectroscopy studies, it was found that the deposited films were polycrystalline with a predominant hexagonal wurtzite structure along the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface. The presence of multiple interference fringes in the transmittance and reflectance spectra shows the good homogeneity of the films. All the films are highly transparent with transparency reaching 80% indicating the possibility to use these films as an optical window. The absorption tail gradually shifted towards a higher wavelength side, which resulted in the decrease of bandgap energy from 3.35 to 3.26 eV. All the sputtered films are highly conductive with a conductivity reaching 104 S.cm−1.The effect of Cu-doping on the photocatalytic activity of ZnO thin films for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye was studied under sunlight irradiation and the results showed that the Cudoping provokes appreciable degradation of MB and reached a maximum for the 1 wt% Cu doped ZnO film.

Abstract:Pb-doped ZnO nanowires (NWs) have been synthesized by modified thermal evaporation method. Effect of Pb-doping on the morphology, structure, and optical properties of as deposited NWs have been investigated. The TEM images show that the doped NWs consist of cantilever-like with diameter in the range of 20–150nm. It has been found that the doped NWs are single crystalline grown along [101] direction. The composition and valence state of Pb ions have been investigated through energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photospectroscopy (XPS), which demonstrate that the Pb ions are uniformly doped into each NW and are in +2 oxidation state. In addition, photoluminescence spectra exhibit an increased amount of defects with increasing Pb, which leads to a red shift in the UV region. Furthermore, the band gap tailoring in Pb-doped ZnO NWs makes their potential for optoelectronics devices.

Abstract:In this letter, effect of Pb-doping on the electrical and optical properties of the as grown ZnO nanowires (NWs) have been investigated. The microstructural investigations show that the Pb-dopant substituted into wurtzite ZnO nanowires without forming any secondary phase. The amount of contents and valence state of Pb ions has been investigated through energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray photospectroscopy. The doped nanowires show a remarkable reduction of 15.3 nm (127.4 meV) in the optical band gap, while an increase amount of deep-level defects transition in visible luminescence. Furthermore, the reduction in the band gap and the presence of deep-level defects induces strong effect in the electrical resistivity of doped NWs, which makes their potential for the fabrication of nanodevices. The possible growth mechanism is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The present work reports on the synthesis of ZnO photocatalysts with different Co-doping levels via a facile one-step solution route. The structural and optical properties were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The morphology of Co-doped ZnO depends on the reaction temperature and the amount of Co and counter-ions in the solution. Changes with the c-axis lattice constant and room temperature redshift show the replacement of Zn with Co ions without changing the wurtzite structure. Photocatalytic activities of Co-doped ZnO on the evolution of H2 and the degradation of methylene blue (MB) reduce with the doping of Co ions. As the close ionic radii of Co and Zn, the reducing photocatalytic activity is not due to the physical defects but the formation of deep bandgap energy levels. Photocurrent response experiments further prove the formation of the recombination centers. Mechanistic insights into Co-ZnO formation and performance regulation are essential for their structural adaptation for application in catalysis, energy storage, etc.

Abstract:Silver-doped ZnO nanoparticles were successfully fabricated at $400\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ via a simple and rapid method based on short time solid state milling and calcination of precursor powders. The effect of Ag dilute doping on the structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties of ZnO nanoparticles was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.~X-ray analysis revealed that Ag doped ZnO solidified in hexagonal wurtzite structure.~ The intensity of deep level emission was reduced with increasing silver doping in PL measurement.~The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement predicted that Ag was mainly in the metallic state and ZnO was in the wurtzite structure.~ This metallic state accompanied by unique zinc oxide properties decolorized the methyl violet, efficiently.~ The first-principles calculation represented Ag deep level in ZnO with an n-type behavior, while in ZnO structure with grain boundary p-type nature via shallow states is dominant same as powder samples as studied in this present work. It was suggested that these Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles may have good applications in optoelectronics, spintronics and wastewater treatment.
Correlating Cu dopant concentration, optoelectronic properties, and photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanostructures: experimental and theoretical insights

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of photocatalysts can be enhanced by cation doping, and the dopant concentration plays a key role in achieving high efficiency. This study explores the impact of copper (Cu) doping at concentrations ranging from 0% to 10% on the microstructural, optical, electronic, and photocatalytic properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows a non-linear alteration in the lattice parameters with increasing the Cu content and the formation of CuO as a secondary phase at the Cu concentration of >3%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insights into the change in the electronic structures of ZnO induced by Cu doping, leading to the formation of localized d electronic levels above the valence band maximum. The modulation of the electronic structure of ZnO by Cu doping facilitates the visible light absorption via O 2p → Cu 3d and Cu 3d → Zn 2p transitions. Photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals a quenching of the defect-related emission peak at approximately 570 nm for all Cu-doped ZnO nanostructures, indicating a reduction in the structural and other defects. The photocatalytic activity tests confirm that the ZnO nanostructures doped with 3% Cu exhibit the highest efficiency compared to other samples due to the suitable band-edge position and visible light absorption.

Abstract:Zn‐doped CuO research, including their antibacterial properties, were displayed graphically. According to the figure, the CuO and Zn‐doped CuO sample exhibits good efficacy in all antibacterial implications. In a nutshell, CuO and Zn‐doped CuO enhances bioactivities. Bacterial diseases are causing major health issues across the world. Recent research has revealed that the metal ion discharge of nanomaterials is extremely effective at eradicating bacterial outbreaks and resistance. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) for antibacterial functions have been produced using nanomaterials with high specific surface area, complex structural framework, and spectral properties. In this study, we thoroughly investigated the impact of Zn dopants on copper oxide (CuO) nanostructures and their nanomaterial‐based antibacterial processes. The method of production includes the formation of CuO and Zn‐doped CuO nanostructures via chemical coprecipitation. By using several characterization techniques, the as‐synthesized nanostructures were confirmed. Based on their specific surface area and surface‐active site, the different antibacterial activities of these dopants vary the antibacterial action. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using the agar well diffusion method. A significant antibacterial action was observed in the samples. In the pharmaceutical and food sectors, this CuO and its combined dopants can be a substitute for synthetic antibacterial agents.

Abstract:Cu-doped ZnO nanofilms were prepared by sol–gel process using zinc acetate dihydrate, Copper (II) chloride dihydrate as a precursor and ethanol as solvent. The influence of Cu-doping concentration (2 wt%, 5 wt% and 7 wt%) and withdrawal speed of the dip coating process (20, 50 and 100 mm/min) on the structural, morphological and optical properties of the nanofilms have been investigated. The prepared films were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and UV–visible. The XRD patterns show the typical hexagonal ZnO in the (002) plane, and the crystallite size of the doped film increases with the doping concentration and withdrawal speed. The SEM images show that the morphological surface of the films was affected by Cu doping. The successful doping of ZnO films with Cu was confirmed by the EDS analysis. The transmittance considerably decreases accompanying increase in the Cu concentration, and increases as the withdrawal speed increases from 20 to 100 mm/min. The optical band gap of pure and Cu-doped ZnO was found to decrease from 3.25 to 3.18 eV as the withdrawal speed increased.

Abstract:In present work, the doping of ZnO nanoparticles has been achieved successfully by the addition of intentional impurity in the ZnO lattice by two transitions and one other metal namely iron, silver, and bismuth, respectively (Zn1−xO-Fex, Zn1−xO-Bix, and Zn1−xO-Agx; x = 10%). The aim of the work is to enhance the optical and antimicrobial efficiency of ZnO by doping with different metals and study the effect on structural, morphological, and optical properties. The as-synthesized pure and doped ZnO were characterized using advanced tools i.e. TEM, SEM, XRD, FT-IR, EDX, UV-DRS, BET, AFM, and Raman spectroscopy. The antimicrobial activity of pure and doped ZnO was tested on Gram-positive and -negative bacteria by agar disc diffusion assay. The significant change was observed in the optical and morphological properties of ZnO after doping clearly due to the influence of dopant ions.Graphical abstractSummary: Graphical abstract shows the synthesis, doping (Fe, Bi, and Ag), and characterization (TEM) of ZnO.

Abstract:Based on the density functional theory, we explore the electronic and magnetic properties of (Ni,Cu)-codoped ZnO systems (Zn(Ni,Cu)O). It is shown that dopant Cu has a long-range modulation for the Ni–Ni ferromagnetic coupling and enhances the stability of ferromagnetism. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the path of Cu modulation is through the Cu–Ni magnetic interaction.
