Abstract:MXene membranes has emerged as promising membrane materials due to their rigid lamellar structure and easily functionalized terminal groups. Understanding the mechanism of solvent transportation through MXene membrane at the microscopic level is significant for the development of new MXene based membranes. In this study, MXene membranes with different interlayer d-spacings (e.g., 0.9 nm, 1.45 nm, 2.0 nm, and 2.5 nm) are investigated for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) of four solvents (e.g., acetone, acetonitrile, methanol, and ethanol) and a model solute (Nile red). In membrane with the d-spacing of 0.9 nm, the solvent fluxes are regulated by the arrangements of solvents in the membrane. An ordered orientation and arrangement of solvent would result in a high flux. At this time, the solvent arrangement is dominated by the interaction energies between the solvent and membrane surface. When the d-spacing is larger than 1.45 nm, the solvent property (e.g., viscosity) plays the dominant role in flux determination. Compared with reported membranes, a substantially higher solvent flux can be achieved through the 2D MXene lamellar membranes. The solute rejections are controlled by a size-sieving mechanism, and 100% rejection of Nile red could be obtained in MXene membranes with 0.9 and 1.45 nm d-spacings. From the bottom-up, this work reveals the key governing factors that dominate the solvent permeation and solute rejection of 2D MXene lamellar membranes, and would also promote the development of new OSN membranes.

Abstract:Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has been regarded as a promising membrane-based separation technology with great potential in many fields. In this work, based on the strong electrostatic interaction between nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by the quaternized P(VC-r-DMAEMA) (Q-PVD) and hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) substrate membranes, separation nanochannels were successfully constructed on the surface of membranes by a one-step coating method. The types of the substrates and concentrations of NPs were optimized to obtain the proper performance. The surface morphology, chemical compositions, surface wettability, surface charge, and pore size were characterized. The obtained thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes exhibited excellent stability in various common organic solvents, such as n-heptane, acetonitrile, ethanol, etc. Furthermore, composite membranes showed excellent retention for dyes with specific molecular weights, with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 825 Da. In particular, the rejection rates of Coomassie brilliant blue (BB) and Bengal rose red (RB) were 96.6% and 97.9%, respectively. Given the above characteristics, the composite membranes are expected to be used in the field of OSN.
Ultrathin Lamellar MoS2 Membranes for Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Abstract:High-performance nanofiltration membranes applicable to organic solvents are urgently needed for chemical and environment related industries. In this work, the ultrathin two dimensional (2D) lamellar nanofiltration membranes were fabricated by layer-by-layer stacking MoS2 nanosheet building blocks. MoS2 based membranes have highly ordered and regular transport channels with narrowly distributed sizes, which enable high permeances and favorable rejections to be achieved. The D-MoS2 membrane in the dry state with a thickness of 20 nm exhibits an exceptional water and acetonitrile permeance of 458 and 1371 L m(-2) h(-1).bar(-1) respectively. The higher permeance of water and acetonitrile was gained by the S-MoS2 membrane in the solvated state with a thickness of 36 nm, which can reach 1881 and 5207 L m(-2) h(-1).bar(-1) respectively. Both of D-MoS2 and S-MoS2 membranes give rise to good separation efficiency, e.g., evans blue and methylene blue rejections of 100%. In addition, the transfer mass nanochannels in MoS2 derived membranes show quite high stability toward high pressure, acid, base, and oxidative environments.

Abstract:Significance Tremendous amounts of organic solvents are used in industry, requiring chemical-resistant membranes for energy-efficient solvent recovery. Currently, organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is hindered by the instability of membranes in operation, in particular under high temperatures and in harsh solvents. In this research, we revealed the solvent transport across nanopores of single-layer graphene via molecular dynamics simulation and combined it with a resistance model to guide the design of a defect-tolerant graphene composite membrane for OSN. The graphene-covered membrane demonstrated high permeance and excellent resistance to DMF at high temperatures, offering possibilities for challenging separations.

Abstract:Nanosheet-based membranes have shown enormous potential for energy-efficient molecular transport and separation applications, but designing these membranes for specific separations remains a great challenge due to the lack of good understanding of fluid transport mechanisms in complex nanochannels. We synthesized reduced MXene/graphene hetero-channel membranes with sub–1-nm pores for experimental measurements and theoretical modeling of their structures and fluid transport rates. Our experiments showed that upon complete rejection of salt and organic dyes, these membranes with subnanometer channels exhibit remarkably high solvent fluxes, and their solvent transport behavior is very different from their homo-structured counterparts. We proposed a subcontinuum flow model that enables accurate prediction of solvent flux in sub–1-nm slit-pore membranes by building a direct relationship between the solvent molecule–channel wall interaction and flux from the confined physical properties of a liquid and the structural parameters of the membranes. This work provides a basis for the rational design of nanosheet-based membranes for advanced separation and emerging nanofluidics.

Abstract:Layered two-dimensional materials can potentially be utilized for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane fabrication owing to their precise molecular sieving by the interlayer structure and excellent stability in harsh conditions. Nevertheless, the extensive tortuosity of nanochannels and bulky solvent molecules impede rapid permeability. Herein, nanoporous graphene (NG) with a high density of sp 2 carbon domain was synthesized via sequential thermal pore activation of graphene oxide (GO) and microwave-assisted reduction. Due to the smooth sp 2 carbon domain surfaces and dense nanopores, the microwave-treated nanoporous graphene membrane exhibited ultrafast organic solvent permeance (e.g., IPA: 2278 LMH/bar) with excellent stability under practical cross-flow conditions. Furthermore, the membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) is switchable from 500 Da size of molecule to sub-nanometer-size molecules depending on the solvent type, and this switching occurs spontaneously with solvent change. These properties indicate feasibility of multiple (both binary and ternary) organic mixture separation using a single membrane. The nanochannel structure effect on solvent transport is also investigated using computation calculations.

Abstract:Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is an emerging membrane technology that could revolutionize chemical separations in numerous vital industries. Despite its significance, there remains a lack of fundamental understanding of solvent transport mechanisms in OSN membranes. Here, we use an extended Flory-Rehner theory, nonequilibrium molecular dynamic simulations, and organic solvent transport experiments to demonstrate that solvent flow in OSN membranes is driven by a pressure gradient. We show that solvent molecules migrate as clusters through interconnected pathways within the membrane pore structure, challenging the widely accepted diffusion-based view of solvent transport in OSN. We further reveal that solvent permeance is dependent on solvent affinity to the OSN membrane, which, in turn, controls the membrane pore structure. Our fundamental insights lay the scientific groundwork for the development of next-generation OSN membranes.

Abstract:This paper reveals the chemical, structural, and separation stability of stacked molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) membranes and establishes a low-cost and facile approach to developing stable, selective membranes for efficient molecular separation in an organic solvent. MoS2 nanoflakes that were dominant by monolayer MoS2 sheets as prepared via direct chemical exfoliation (them-MoS2) were found to be chemically and structurally instable, with a sharp decrease in the level of solute rejection within a few days. Few-layer MoS2 nanoflakes were then fabricated using a hydrothermal method (hydro-MoS2). A "supportive" drying process involving glycerol pretreatment and drying in an oven was established to allow realignment of nanoflakes and adjustment of interflake spacing. We have shown that the hydro-MoS2 membranes provide a mean interflake free spacing of similar to 1 nm, which is ideal for the separation of a model solute (Rose Bengal, size of similar to 1.45 nm) from the solvent isopropanol (size of 0.58 nm) with good long-term stability over a 7 day test.

Abstract:In this study, a thin membrane with vertically aligned mesoporous silica nanochannels was modified with long silane group molecules (E-MSTF-LTA) supported on an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN). The ultrathin thickness, low tortuosity, ordered vertical channels and super-organophilic surface of E-MSTF-LTA endow it with an ultrahigh ethanol permeance (110 LMH/bar) over current state-of-the-art OSN membranes and a high acetone permeance of 360 LMH/bar. Furthermore, a 99% rejection of Evans blue (EB) was demonstrated, and a cut-off of approximately 660 Da was achieved. Besides, the modified Hagen-Poiseuille (HP) equation was applied to evaluate the theoretical permeance, which is consistent with the experimental results. To explore in depth the underlying principle behind the OSN performance of the vertically aligned E-MSTF-LTA membrane, the parameters, including the solvent viscosity, total Hansen solubility, solvent diameter, and solvent polarity were introduced to evaluate their influence on the permeance, while for solute transport behavior, the impact of the size exclusion effect on the solute rejection rate was examined. The results show that the viscosity is the critical factor for determining the solvent permeation, while the size exclusion effect dominates solute rejection. These findings open up a way to design next-generation vertically aligned OSN membranes and shed light on the OSN performance, both empirically and theoretically, using this system.

Abstract:Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has become increasingly important in petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, demanding superior and robust membranes. 2D MOF nanosheets hold great promise in the preparation of OSN membrane. Nevertheless, the fabrication of defect-free 2D MOF membranes with robust mechanical strength is hampered due to the weak interlamellar interactions between MOF nanosheets. Herein, 2D MOF composite membrane for high-performance OSN application is fabricated through the assembly of copper 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate (CuBDC) nanosheets and NH 2 -SWCNTs. Within this composite configuration, NH 2 -SWCNTs can shelter the defects between the adjacent CuBDC nanosheets, rendering CuBDC/CNTs composite membranes precise molecular sieving ability. Meanwhile, the nanochannels created by NH 2 -SWCNTs with low frictional coefficients on the internal surface promote the permeation of organic solvents. Moreover, the multiple interactions between CuBDC and NH 2 -SWCNTs improve the mechanical strength of composite membranes. Accordingly, the composite membranes display excellent rejections of dye molecules on the basis of size-sieving mechanism with superior methanol permeance of 1260 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , as well as steady congo red rejection at high trans -membrane pressure of 5 bar, demonstrating good pressure resistance of composite membranes. Moreover, the composite membranes exhibit outstanding stability against high-concentration feeds and long-term operation for 50 h, confirming excellent practicality in the purification of dyes from organic solvents. The design approach in this work may inspire the fabrication of other nanosheet-based membranes for high-efficient OSN.

Abstract:The novel strategy of thin-film nanocomposite loose nanofiltration (LNF) membranes incorporating an interlayer of nanomaterials has raised growing interests for the high-performance membrane design. Although the effects of membrane structure on separation performance have been elucidated for a long time, however, the quantitative structure-performance relationship of interlayer-based LNF membranes has not been established. In this study, we established the structure-performance relationship of TA-MoS 2 interlayer based LNF membranes from a quantitative level for the first time. The correlation heat map analysis identified four key structural parameters (e.g. selective layer thickness, crosslinking degree, water contact angle, and zeta potential) for water permeability as well as dye rejection, and three key structural parameters (e.g. selective layer thickness, crosslinking degree, and zeta potential) for salts rejection, respectively. Furthermore, the multiple linear regression analysis revealed the rigorous mathematic modeling of key structural parameters-separation performance relationships with all R 2 values above 0.899, and determined the contributions of each key structural parameter to the separation performance in a quantitative level. Finally, the optimal TA-MoS 2 interlayer based LNF membrane exhibited a high water permeability of 80.2 LMH·bar −1 , effective separation of dye/salts (rejection rate: congo red (99.0%), methyl blue (95.1%), Na 2 SO 4 (1.5%) and NaCl (0.5%)), good stability and antifouling properties (i.e. water flux recovery rate (FRR) of 96% for humic acid). This study can pave the way of quantitatively design of interlayer-based LNF membrane with targeted performance.

Abstract:Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes are the key factors for the treatment of organic solution via OSN technology. In this work, we fabricated a kind of ultra-thin and ultra-smooth thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) OSN membrane using interfacial polymerization (IP) process with ultra-low concentration for both the aqueous and the organic monomers, together with doped tannic acid (TA) functionalized Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets of ultra-low content in the aqueous monomer solution, and followed by post-IP chemical crosslinking and solvent activation procedures. The results demonstrated that the incorporated TA-MoS2 nanosheets not only help to promote the solvent permeation, but also help to increase the solvent resistance and fouling resistance of the fabricated membrane. The optimal TFN OSN membrane fabricated using 0.05 wt% aqueous m-phenylenediamine (MPD) solution doped with TA-MoS2 nanosheets content of 50 mg L−1 and 0.0025 wt% trimesoyl chloride (TMC) / n-hexane solution has an ultra-thin barrier layer, with an average thickness of about 15 nm. This endows it a much higher pure DMF permeance of 219.1 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1, which is much superior over most of literature works. Meanwhile, the fabricated TFN OSN membrane achieves a rejection of 99.1 % for rhodamine B (RDB, 479 Dalton), which is about 10.1 % increment compared with that of the baseline thin-film composite (TFC) membrane. The TFN OSN membrane also features an ultra-smooth skin layer, with a surface roughness of merely about 2.0 nm, which is quite beneficial for its fouling resistance performance. Moreover, the TFN OSN membrane features outstanding high solvent resistance. It remained a nearly constant and extremely high rejection for Rose Begal (RB, 1017 Dalton), about 99.9 %, and a much higher DMF permeance, 101 ± 2 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1, after cross-flow filtration for more than 200 h using 100 mg L−1 RB / DMF solution as feed, which is seldomly reported in literature. Even being immersed in DMF at 80 °C for more than 144 h, it remained a rejection of higher than 98 % for Rhodamine B (479 Dalton), indicating its superior solvent resistance and promising industrial application prospect.

Abstract:Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is a robust membrane technology for solvent recovery and molecular separation in harsh conditions. However, the current OSN membranes are largely synthesized through trial-and-error methods. In this study, machine learning (ML), molecular simulation (MS) and experiment are synergized for the development of OSN membranes. Using three different learning strategies, ML models are first constructed to identify critical gross properties (i.e., solvent viscosity, membrane thickness and water contact angle) and establish a phenomenological relationship for permeability prediction. Subsequently, ML models based on molecular representation via concatenated fragments are developed to predict methanol permeabilities in three polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) membranes (PIM-A1, CX-PIM-A1 and PIM-8). The methanol permeability predicted in PIM-A1 is the highest among the three and also higher than that in archetypal PIM-1. Next, MS is conducted to provide microscopic insights into swelling behavior and methanol permeation in the three PIM membranes. Finally, the PIM-A1 membrane is experimentally fabricated and found to exhibit nearly complete solute rejection and methanol permeability of 2.33 × 10 −6 L m/m 2 ·h·bar, which validates the ML prediction. This study demonstrates that the synergy of ML, MS and experiment can fundamentally elucidate and quantitatively predict solvent permeation in polymer membranes, and the holistic approach may advance the development of new membranes for solvent recovery and other important separation processes.

Abstract:Nonpolar solvent separation is widely used in petroleum, chemical, food industries, but traditional separation methods consume intensive energy. State-of-art organic solvent nanofiltration membranes require complex modifications for nonpolar solvent transport. For the first time, we propose the concurrent modification of the surface, interface and support layer of dual-layer membranes with three additives (perfluorodecylamine, fluoro substituted aromatic amine, silica nanoparticles) in a one-step cocasting process. A delamination-free dual-layer membrane was obtained with a hierarchical hydrophobicity and transport channels. The novel designed structure elevated the pure n-hexane permeance (28.75 L m(-2) hr(-1) bar(-1)) by 3 orders of magnitude with a high lecithin rejection (98.7%). This method of synergistically controlling the hierarchical structures and properties of dual-layer membranes can significantly shorten the preparation process of high-performance nonpolar solvent nanofiltration membranes.
Ni-metal-organic-framework (Ni-MOF) membranes from multiply stacked nanosheets (MSNs) for efficient molecular sieve separation in aqueous and organic solvent

Abstract:Lamellar membranes are attracting extensive attention for high throughput and precise molecules/ions sieve separation. However, the energy-consuming exfoliation and low yield of single-layer nanosheets restrict the massive production of membranes. Herein, we facilely fabricated 2D Ni-mediated metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) membranes directly from multiply stacked nanosheets (MSNs) for both aqueous and organic molecular sieve separation. Multiply layered nanosheets were obtained from a high concentration dispersion via simple ultrasonic treatment. The morphology and chemistry of synthesized Ni-MOF nanosheets were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The thickness of Ni-MOF membranes could be well regulated by the volume of dispersion. The membrane exhibited high molecular rejection to 8GX (97.29%), EB (96.28%), CR (99.69%), and CBB (93.31%) in water, respectively and a stable perm-selectivity in continuous 24 h filtration. The lamellar membrane showed excellent pressure and pH (2–10) resistance. The membrane achieved rational permeance of various organic solvents mainly depending on viscosity and good rejection to MB (91.37%), BY (92.01%), and EB (96.90%) in isopropanol.

Abstract:Organic solvent reverse osmosis (OSRO) is an emerging and promising technology for the separation of organic mixtures, which is realized by differential transport rates of organics through polymer membranes. However, the solvent transport characteristics and separation mechanism within OSRO systems remain unclear. Herein, we investigate the solvent transport behavior in polymer membranes with intrinsic microporosity by combining nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations with solvent permeation examinations. The results indicate that organic molecules permeate through the micropores in a clustered state driven by both pressure and concentration gradients. The selectivity of solvents is co-determined by their sorption and diffusion in the swollen polymer membranes with a microporous character. The sorption selectivity is predominant in the overall selectivity toward polar ethyl ether/n-butanol separation, whereas diffusion selectivity is more critical in nonpolar 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene/toluene separation. Generally, this work provides valuable insights into the development of next-generation OSRO membranes for solvent separation.
