Abstract:Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has been regarded as a promising membrane-based separation technology with great potential in many fields. In this work, based on the strong electrostatic interaction between nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by the quaternized P(VC-r-DMAEMA) (Q-PVD) and hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) substrate membranes, separation nanochannels were successfully constructed on the surface of membranes by a one-step coating method. The types of the substrates and concentrations of NPs were optimized to obtain the proper performance. The surface morphology, chemical compositions, surface wettability, surface charge, and pore size were characterized. The obtained thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes exhibited excellent stability in various common organic solvents, such as n-heptane, acetonitrile, ethanol, etc. Furthermore, composite membranes showed excellent retention for dyes with specific molecular weights, with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 825 Da. In particular, the rejection rates of Coomassie brilliant blue (BB) and Bengal rose red (RB) were 96.6% and 97.9%, respectively. Given the above characteristics, the composite membranes are expected to be used in the field of OSN.

Abstract:A free-standing sandwich-structured polyamide 6 (PA 6)@GO@PA 6 nanofiltration membrane intercalated by nanoparticles with high water flux was prepared using electrospraying combined with electrospinning method. According to the XRD patterns, the interlayer spacing of the membrane increases with the TiO2 nanoparticle (NP) intercalated. The TiO2 NP intercalated PA 6@GO (120)@ PA 6 nanofiltration membrane shows a pure water flux up to 13.77 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) even under an extremely low external pressure (1.0 bar), which increased by 80.7% than that of PA 6@GO (120)@ PA 6 nanofiltration membrane (7.62 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)) without nanoparticles intercalated, and maintains high organic dye rejection capabilities (> 85% for BF, > 92% for MB, > 99% for MO, and 99.85% for EB). Besides TiO2, other nanoparticles, such as SiO2 and Si3N4 can also improve the water flux and maintain high rejection rate for MO and MB. Furthermore, TiO2 intercalated PA 6@GO (120)@ PA 6 nanofiltration membrane is very stable even under ultrasonication, and shows a high flux for some common solvents (12.32, 4.91, and 1.26 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) for methanol, ethanol, and NMP, respectively).

Abstract:Significance Tremendous amounts of organic solvents are used in industry, requiring chemical-resistant membranes for energy-efficient solvent recovery. Currently, organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is hindered by the instability of membranes in operation, in particular under high temperatures and in harsh solvents. In this research, we revealed the solvent transport across nanopores of single-layer graphene via molecular dynamics simulation and combined it with a resistance model to guide the design of a defect-tolerant graphene composite membrane for OSN. The graphene-covered membrane demonstrated high permeance and excellent resistance to DMF at high temperatures, offering possibilities for challenging separations.

Abstract:Nanoporous graphene has attracted extensive attention as a type of disruptive membrane materials for organic separation. However, the fabrication of an ideal graphene membrane with high permeability and selectivity remains challenging due to the inevitable non-selective defects. Here, a strategy based on synergetic effect of graphene membranes and covalent organic framework (COF) nanounits is developed. Atomically thin nanoporous graphene provides high solvent flux and stability. To prevent the leakage from inevitable non-selective pores in graphene without sacrificing flux, porous COF nanounits are directly anchored at the defective sites. The fabricated membranes exhibit record-high solvent flux of 49.81 L m- 2 h-1 (1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that of state-of-the-art membranes), and relatively low reverse solute flux of 1.69 g m- 2 h-1 in organic solvent forward osmosis (OSFO) process. The strategy we proposed gives dramatic impetus to the development of OSFO and other membrane separation processes.

Abstract:Layered two-dimensional materials can potentially be utilized for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane fabrication owing to their precise molecular sieving by the interlayer structure and excellent stability in harsh conditions. Nevertheless, the extensive tortuosity of nanochannels and bulky solvent molecules impede rapid permeability. Herein, nanoporous graphene (NG) with a high density of sp 2 carbon domain was synthesized via sequential thermal pore activation of graphene oxide (GO) and microwave-assisted reduction. Due to the smooth sp 2 carbon domain surfaces and dense nanopores, the microwave-treated nanoporous graphene membrane exhibited ultrafast organic solvent permeance (e.g., IPA: 2278 LMH/bar) with excellent stability under practical cross-flow conditions. Furthermore, the membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) is switchable from 500 Da size of molecule to sub-nanometer-size molecules depending on the solvent type, and this switching occurs spontaneously with solvent change. These properties indicate feasibility of multiple (both binary and ternary) organic mixture separation using a single membrane. The nanochannel structure effect on solvent transport is also investigated using computation calculations.

Abstract:The graphene oxide (GO) membrane holds great promise in desalination and green energy fields due to its naturally occurring nanochannels, which provide significant advantages in gas and ion filtration. In this study, the sizes and distributions of nanopore/channels in GO membranes and the relationship of GO flakes size and membrane thickness are explored by molecular dynamics simulations. Our results demonstrate that the size of GO flakes influences the distribution of nanopore sizes in GO membranes, while it almost has no influence on the total nanopore area in membranes with the same thickness. Additionally, our findings confirm that the total nanopore area of the GO membranes decreases exponentially as the membrane thickness increases, which is consistent with experimental observations. To expand the range of nanopore size regulation, we developed a columnar-array substrate model to create GO membranes customized for specific filtration functions, such as virus filtration. Our findings provide physical insights into the rational design of functional membranes for energy and environmental applications and offer theoretical guidance and technical support for the practical application of GO membranes in separation and filtration.
Functionalised graphene oxide-based nanofiltration membranes with enhanced molecular separation performance

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes with fast water permeability and good separation efficiency along with acceptable stability are an urgent need for various applications. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) is functionalised with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using different ratios (0.01, 0.02, and 0.03). The Ag NPs have been prepared from orange peel extractive by a green chemical method. The GO/Ag NPs functionalised membranes (ratio 0.03) with thickness ~385 ± 10 nm exhibit an excellent selectivity for various dye molecules with good water permeance, i.e. methylene blue (99 ± 1% rejection and permeability ~287 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1), crystal violet (rejection 99 ± 1% and permeability 862 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1), safranin O (rejection 99 ± 1% and permeability 625 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1) etc. Further, the GO/Ag NPs functionalised membrane (Thickness ~385 ± 10) has been used for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), and the membrane exhibits high separation efficiency up to ~97% for several dye molecules in methanol solvent along with good permeance (530 ± 20 L.m−2.h−1.bar1). Besides this, these membranes are stable under different conditions for up to ~70 days. We hope that the good separation efficiency and high permeance of GO/Ag NPs composite membranes can be utilised in various wastewater treatment, desalination, and organic solvent nanofiltration applications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), a carbonaceous 2D nanomaterial, has received significant interest as a next-generation membrane building block. To fabricate high-performance membranes, an effective strategy involves stacking GO nanosheets in laminated structures, thereby creating unique nanochannel galleries. One outstanding merit of laminar GO membranes is that their permselectivity is readily tunable by tailoring the size of the nanochannels. Here, a high-performance GO-based nanofiltration membrane was developed by intercalating an aromatic crosslinker, α,α/-dichloro-p-xylene (DCX), between the layers in laminated GO nanosheets. Owing to the formation of strong covalent bonds between the crosslinker and the GO, the resulting GO laminate membrane exhibited outstanding structural stability. Furthermore, due to the precisely controlled and enlarged interlayer spacing distance of the developed DCX-intercalated GO membrane, it achieved an over two-fold enhancement in water permeability (11 ± 2 LMH bar−1) without sacrificing the rejection performance for divalent ions, contrary to the case with a pristine GO membrane.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) lamellar membranes hold a broad prospect for separation applications. However, their design and development need controllable fabrication of ultrathin and stable lamellar membranes. Here, an organic-inorganic lamellar composite membrane with layer-by-layer graphene oxide (GO) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) structure was fabricated through a dual-needle electrostatic atomization strategy. The GO nanosheets work as skeleton to ensure ultrathin and defect-free membrane structure, while PEI cross-links adjacent GO nanosheets for structure stability. Importantly, this membrane achieves fast polar solvent permeance: 46.2 and 146.8 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) for water and acetone, outperforming most reported GO-based membranes. Meanwhile, the ordered and cross-linked interlayer channels provide accurate size sieving for industrial dyes (larger than 1.6 nm) with the rejection of above 96%. Significantly, this lamellar composite membrane displays excellent structure, operation, pressure, and cycling stabilities, which are difficult for traditional lamellar membranes. Metal-Organic Framework Channelled Graphene Composite Membranes for H-2/Co2 Separation

Abstract:Graphene-based materials offer great potential in gas separation. However, it remains a challenge to control the interlayer structure to obtain membranes with high permeability. We describe a route for the fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) channelled graphene composite membranes with molecular sieving properties by in situ crystallization. Based on polar oxygen groups, extended interlayer spacing and electronegativity, MOF nanosheets can easily be impregnated into interlayers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which strongly anchor and bolster up rGO by coordination bonds to form a porous architecture with uniform nanochannels. The H-2/CO2 selectivity of ZIF-8/rGO membranes reached about 26.4. Moreover, many other MOF materials were also inserted between rGO sheets to obtain membranes with both high selectivity (larger than 10.3) and superior permeability (in the range of 73-21 112 barrer).
Stable Graphene Oxide Cross-Linked Membranes for Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes are well-known materials for water purification, owing to their unique molecular transport and sieving properties. However, one of the factors that limits their use in aqueous and organic solutions for applications in industries and water treatment plants is their tendency to swell, forming an enlarged interlayer spacing that disintegrates its structure. Here we report stable ethylenediamine-cross-linked GO membranes, which can efficiently permeate water and organic solvents and filter organic solutions containing molecular dyes. The prepared membranes with a 150 nm thickness demonstrated high permeance for water and organic solvents and exhibited a rejection >95% for small organic dyes dissolved in methanol. A dead-end filtration device was used to estimate the performance of the membranes, confirming pure water permeance of 14 L m–2 h–1 bar–1. The acetone permeance was 30 L m–2 h–1 bar–1, and the N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone permeance was 5 L m–2 h–1 bar–1. At the same time, the cross linker prevented the disruption of the sheets. The combination of stability, high performance, and simplicity of fabrication make these membranes advantageous for potential application in aqueous and non-aqueous industrial separations.

Abstract:Abstract High permeability and selectivity have long been pursued in membrane separation technology. However, this purpose remains a paramount challenge for molecular separations mainly limited by the trade‐off between permeance and ‐selectivity. Here, a bio‐utilization strategy based on deep understanding of bio‐features to fabricate a cell wall‐graphene oxide microcomposite membrane for organic solvent nanofiltration is rationally designed. The membrane displays a unique configuration with alternating stacking of cell wall layers and ultrathin graphene oxide layers. Moreover, the interactions between the cell wall and graphene oxide as well as between the membrane and solvent are mainly revealed by all atom molecular dynamics to uncover the possible working principle of the membrane. Specifically, the strong graphene oxide‐cell wall interaction and anti‐swelling behavior of the cell wall together restrict the expansion of the graphene oxide layer to promise high selectivity. Meanwhile, the well‐developed porosity of the cell wall allows a high throughput of various solvents through the membrane, showing excellent rejection for small molecules and solvent permeance as high as 56 L m 2 h 1 bar −1 . The proposed cell wall microcomposite 2D structure could encourage the practical applications of GO‐based membranes.

Abstract:Membrane-based filtration offers many benefits like lower energy consumption and operating cost for separation in harsh solvents. In particular, such membranes need to have high nanofiltration separation efficiency and high resistance to organic solvents. Unfortunately, the common thin film composite (TFC) - based organic solvent nanofiltration membranes often give low solvent permeance due to the denser skin layer atop the substrate. To address this, we fabricated a covalent organic framework (COF) - incorporated TFC membrane through the in-situ formation of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxaldehyde (TFB) and graphene oxide (GO) in p -Cymene, a less toxic solvent, with p -Phenylenediamine (PPD) in aqueous phase via interfacial polymerization. The PES-COF-GO membranes exhibited optimal solvent permeance and separation efficiency at an intermediate 0.8 wt% GO, which gave the highest water permeance of 16.2 L/m 2 h bar and a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of around 325 gmol -1 . In addition, the crosslinked GO-COF layer endowed the membrane with chemical stability in non-polar solvents. The mechanical strength of PES-COF-GO membrane was also improved due to the COF-GO layer atop the PES substrate making the surface tighter and mechanically stronger.

“Mix-Then-On-Demand-Complex”: In Situ Cascade Anionization and Complexation of Graphene Oxide for High-Performance Nanofiltration Membranes

Abstract:Assembling two-dimensional (2D) materials by polyelectrolyte often suffers from inhomogeneous microstructures due to the conventional mixing-and-simultaneous-complexation procedure ("mix-and-complex") in aqueous solution. Herein a "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept via on-demand in situ cascade anionization and ionic complexation of 2D materials is raised that drastically improves structural order in 2D assemblies, as exemplified by classical graphene oxide (GO)-based ultrathin membranes. Specifically, in dimethyl sulfoxide, the carboxylic acid-functionalized GO sheets (COOH–GOs) were mixed evenly with a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and upon filtration formed a well-ordered layered composite membrane with homogeneous distribution of PIL chains in it; next, whenever needed, it was alkali-treated to convert COOH–GO in situ into its anionized state COO––GO that immediately complexed ionically with the surrounding cationic PIL chains. This "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept separates the ionic complexation of GO and polyelectrolytes from their mixing step. By synergistically combining the PIL-induced hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions, the as-fabricated nanofiltration membranes carry interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL, reaching a high water permeability of 96.38 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 at a maintained excellent dye rejection 99.79% for 150 h, exceeding the state-of-the-art GO-based hybrid membranes. The molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data, confirming the interface spacing between GO and PIL as the water transport channels.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Organic mixture fractionation enabled by carbon nanotube/graphene nanoribbon organic solvent nanofiltration membrane

Abstract:We developed a hybrid membrane composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) by controlling the degree of unzipping in multi-walled CNTs through oxidation. The CNT/GNR hybrid hydrogel was applied onto a porous polymer filter by large-scale coating using slot-die coating, which was then subjected to hot-pressing at 150 °C and 20 bar. The resulting CNT/GNR hybrid membrane exhibited outstanding performance in organic solvent nano-filtration (OSN), with ultrafast permeance of 60–200 LMH/bar for alcohol solvents and a molecular weight cut-off of 961 Da, surpassing the upper bound of polymer-based OSN membranes. The rapid solvent permeance can be attributed to the increased interlayer spacing due to CNT intercalation and the elimination of oxygen functionalities through an additional reduction process. Meanwhile, the stacked nanoribbon structure effectively separated organic molecules based on interlayer spacing size. Notably, this membrane demonstrated exceptional stability under practical separation conditions, with consistent performance even after 1315 h of cross-flow operation. This operational lifespan is a record for graphene-based membranes and can be attributed to the enhanced adhesion between the polymer substrate and the carbon layer as a result of the welding effect. Finally, the membrane was used to separate a concentrated binary dye mixture solution made of nanometer-sized components, showing precise separation ability with a separation factor of 740 and nearly 100 % purity of permeate and retentate solution after the filtration-based separation process. The membrane has the potential for a wide range of applications in the separation and purification of organic compounds dissolved in organic solvents.

Recently, graphene-based laminated membranes using small-flake graphene oxide (SFGO) nanosheets open up new avenues for high-performance OSN, but their permeance toward high viscosity solvents is below expectation. To address this issue, we design hyperlooping channels using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) intercalated within lanthanum(III) (La3+)-cross-linked SFGO nanochannels to form a ternary nanoarchitecture for low-resistant transport toward high viscosity solvents. At optimized MWCNT loading, the defect-free membrane exhibits 138 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 ethanol permeance at >99% rejections toward organic dyes, outperforming state-of-the-art graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes to date. Even butanolwith twice the viscosity of ethanolexhibits a permeance no less than 60 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 at comparable rejection rates. Theoretical simulation suggests that La3+ cross-linking is critical and can create an intact architecture that brings size exclusion into play as the dominant separation mechanism. Also, MWCNT nanochannel offers at least 1.5-fold lower ethanol transport resistance than that of the GO nanochannel, owing to greater bulk freedom in orientating ethanol molecules. Overall, the hyperlooping architecture demonstrates ∼3-fold higher permeance than neat SFGO membrane for elevating OSN performances.

Abstract:Developing graphene-based membranes is important for a wide range of applications such as in desalination, wastewater treatment, separation and purification. Herein, a novel graphene-based nanofiltration (NF) membrane was fabricated by depositing the magnesium silicate modified reduced graphene oxide (MgSi@RGO) nanosheets on a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membrane via a vacuum filtration method. The MgSi@RGO/PAN composite membrane exhibits special selectivities for separation of organic molecules. Molecule permeation through the MgSi@RGO selective skin layer was observed with the broadened nanochannels propped up by MgSi nanosheets. The rejections of different PEG molecules (PEG200, PEG400, PEG600 and PEG1000) were tested, and the experimental results and theoretical calculations showed high consistency, which means the theoretical model can be effectively used for calculating the real diameter of “pore” in NF membrane. Additionally, three dye molecules were selected to investigate the NF membrane performance, and the MgSi@RGO/PAN composite membrane showed different separation characteristics of charged molecules.
