Abstract:Based on the perspective of the industry peer effect, this paper explains the imitation motivation and internal mechanism of listed companies in implementing employee stock ownership plans, and conducts an empirical test based on the data of listed companies in China from 2014 to 2019. From our study, we document that the peer effect of employee stock ownership plan does exist, and the decision-making of the employee stock ownership plan of listed companies has a tendency to converge with the industry; the employee stock ownership plan may be caused by the listed companies choosing to observe and imitate the behaviour of the same group of companies in the decision-making situation, or the listed companies forced to align with the same group of companies under competitive pressure. Further research indicates when the industry is highly competitive or listed companies are non-state enterprises, the industry peer effect is stronger. The result of this paper shows that the pilot of employee stock ownership plan does need to be carried out in a stable and orderly manner; listed companies need to base their own specific situations and make rational decisions while considering implementing employee stock ownership plans.
