Abstract:Google Earth Engine (GEE) serves as a versatile platform for processing and visualising geospatial datasets, with its primary aim being to provide an open platform for planetary-scale geospatial analysis. Over time, GEE has proven itself as a valuable and robust tool, offering access to a wide array of imagery within a single consolidated system. Its cloud computing environment and computational power eradicate the need to store, process and analyse vast amount of satellite imagery on local computers. GEE has the potential to address some of the challenges associated with earth observation and geospatial applications, particularly in developing countries. Its development has lessened the reliance on high-speed processors and extensive storage capacities. Moreover, GEE presents users with a unique opportunity to conduct analyses with minimal financial investment and equipment requirements. The platform has showcased its capability to perform spatial and temporal analyses on global-scale data at significantly accelerated computational speed, rendering it an attractive tool for the scientific community, offering both versatility and accessibility. Its application spread across various sectors including crop inventory, vegetation mapping and monitoring, land cover mapping, disaster management, hydrological studies, urban planning and management, wetland conservation and management, climate change analysis and forestry analysis. For researchers in developing countries, who often grapple with challenges related to data accessibility, funding for computer hardware and software and resource limitations, GEE opens up new avenues. However, despite its potential, the utilization of GEE in developing countries has fallen short of expectations. Therefore, it is crucial for developing countries to fully leverage this platform to accelerate their sustainable development.

Abstract:Earth system science has changed rapidly due to global environmental changes and the advent of Earth observation technology. Therefore, new tools are required to monitor, measure, analyze, evaluate, and model Earth observation data. Google Earth (GE) was officially launched by Google in 2005 as a ”geobrowser”, and Google Earth Engine (GEE) was released in 2010 as a cloud computing platform with substantial computational capabilities. The use of these two tools or platforms in various applications, particularly as used by the remote sensing community, has developed rapidly. In this paper, we reviewed the applications and trends in the use of GE and GEE by analyzing peer-reviewed articles, dating up to January 2021, in the Web of Science (WoS) core collection using scientometric analysis (i.e., by using CiteSpace) and meta-analysis. We found the following: (1) the number of articles describing the use of GE or GEE increased substantially from two in 2006 to 530 in 2020. The number of GEE articles increased much faster than those concerned with the use of GE. (2) Both GE and GEE were extensively used by the remote sensing community as multidisciplinary tools. GE articles covered a broader range of research areas (e.g., biology, education, disease and health, economic, and information science) and appeared in a broader range of journals than those concerned with the use of GEE. (3) GE and GEE shared similar keywords (e.g., “land cover”, “water”, “model”, “vegetation”, and “forest”), which indicates that their application is of great importance in certain research areas. The main difference was that articles describing the use of GE emphasized its use as a visual display platform, while those concerned with GEE placed more emphasis on big data and time-series analysis. (4) Most applications of GE and GEE were undertaken in countries, such as the United States, China, and the United Kingdom. (5) GEE is an important tool for analysis, whereas GE is used as an auxiliary tool for visualization. Finally, in this paper, the merits and limitations of GE and GEE, and recommendations for further improvements, are summarized from an Earth system science perspective.

Abstract:Preparing experiment-ready images is a labor-intensive but necessary process for almost all remote sensing related studies. This short communication introduces a software to efficiently acquire large-scale high-quality and cloud-free Landsat images to support subsequent analysis and applications. The software fully leverages Google Earth Engine's processing of huge amount of remote sensing images, and the visualization on the availability and accessibility of Landsat images provided by heatmaps at both regional and global scales. The cloud percentage property and quality bands of Landsat surface reflectance products are used for masking clouds, cloud shadows, snow/ice, and low-quality pixels in this study. The software can be applied to effectively choose study areas and prepare data in different fields, such as hydrology, ecology, and human activities. This functioning open-source software can be accessible via GitHub webpages in both JavaScript and Python formats.

Abstract:Land Surface Temperature (LST) is increasingly important for various studies assessing land surface conditions, e.g., studies of urban climate, evapotranspiration, and vegetation stress. The Landsat series of satellites have the potential to provide LST estimates at a high spatial resolution, which is particularly appropriate for local or small-scale studies. Numerous studies have proposed LST retrieval algorithms for the Landsat series, and some datasets are available online. However, those datasets generally require the users to be able to handle large volumes of data. Google Earth Engine (GEE) is an online platform created to allow remote sensing users to easily perform big data analyses without increasing the demand for local computing resources. However, high spatial resolution LST datasets are currently not available in GEE. Here we provide a code repository that allows computing LSTs from Landsat 4, 5, 7, and 8 within GEE. The code may be used freely by users for computing Landsat LST as part of any analysis within GEE.

Abstract:Cloud‐based computing, access to big geospatial data, and virtualization, whereby users are freed from computational hardware and data management logistics, could revolutionize remote sensing applications in fluvial geomorphology. Analysis of multitemporal, multispectral satellite imagery has provided fundamental geomorphic insight into the planimetric form and dynamics of large river systems, but information derived from these applications has largely been used to test existing concepts in fluvial geomorphology, rather than for generating new concepts or theories. Traditional approaches (i.e., desktop computing) have restricted the spatial scales and temporal resolutions of planimetric river channel change analyses. Google Earth Engine (GEE), a cloud‐based computing platform for planetary‐scale geospatial analyses, offers the opportunity to relieve these spatiotemporal restrictions. We summarize the big geospatial data flows available to fluvial geomorphologists within the GEE data catalog, focus on approaches to look beyond mapping wet channel extents and instead map the wider riverscape (i.e., water, sediment, vegetation) and its dynamics, and explore the unprecedented spatiotemporal scales over which GEE analyses can be applied. We share a demonstration workflow to extract active river channel masks from a section of the Cagayan River (Luzon, Philippines) then quantify centerline migration rates from multitemporal data. By enabling fluvial geomorphologists to take their algorithms to petabytes worth of data, GEE is transformative in enabling deterministic science at scales defined by the user and determined by the phenomena of interest. Abstract:Many applied problems arising in agricultural monitoring and food security require reliable crop maps at national or global scale. Large scale crop mapping requires processing and management of large amount of heterogeneous satellite imagery acquired by various sensors that consequently leads to a “Big Data” problem. The main objective of this study is to explore efficiency of using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform when classifying multi-temporal satellite imagery with potential to apply the platform for a larger scale (e.g., country level) and multiple sensors (e.g., Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2). In particular, multiple state-of-the-art classifiers available in the GEE platform are compared to produce a high resolution (30 m) crop classification map for a large territory (~28,100 km2 and 1.0 M ha of cropland). Though this study does not involve large volumes of data, it does address efficiency of the GEE platform to effectively execute complex workflows of satellite data processing required with large scale applications such as crop mapping. The study discusses strengths and weaknesses of classifiers, assesses accuracies that can be achieved with different classifiers for the Ukrainian landscape, and compares them to the benchmark classifier using a neural network approach that was developed in our previous studies. The study is carried out for the Joint Experiment of Crop Assessment and Monitoring (JECAM) test site in Ukraine covering the Kyiv region (North of Ukraine) in 2013. We found that GEE provides very good performance in terms of enabling access to the remote sensing products through the cloud platform and providing pre-processing; however, in terms of classification accuracy, the neural network based approach outperformed support vector machine (SVM), decision tree and random forest classifiers available in GEE.

An online tool with Google Earth Engine and cellular automata for seamlessly simulating global urban expansion at high resolutions

Abstract:Projecting global urban expansion is crucial for environmental assessment under climate change scenarios. However, existing global future urban land products are typically provided at coarse resolutions (1 km) due to data and computing limitations. This hinders the accurate assessment of the impacts of global urban development at finer scales. Thus, we develop the first Cellular Automata (CA) online tool for simulating future global urban expansion in Google Earth Engine (GEE-CA), which can simulate future urban land change at a 30 m resolution under different SSP scenarios. GEE-CA enables seamless simulations of future urban land at high resolution through a partitioned parallel strategy. Seven large urban agglomerations are simulated under shared socioeconomic pathways as representative regions to present our fine-scale results. Comparatively, our datasets preserve significantly more spatial details than existing global urban land products. The improvement in resolution from 1 km to 30 m reduces errors by a range from 7.11% to 21.27% in the estimation of future urban area. So far, the proposed GEE-CA tool allows users to generate urban land projection maps for any defined region with a resolution as high as 30 m.

Early Observations on Performance of Google Compute Engine for Scientific Computing

Abstract:Although Cloud computing emerged for business applications in industry, public Cloud services have been widely accepted and encouraged for scientific computing in academia. The recently available Google Compute Engine (GCE) is claimed to support high-performance and computationally intensive tasks, while little evaluation studies can be found to reveal GCE's scientific capabilities. Considering that fundamental performance benchmarking is the strategy of early-stage evaluation of new Cloud services, we followed the Cloud Evaluation Experiment Methodology (CEEM) to benchmark GCE and also compare it with Amazon EC2, to help understand the elementary capability of GCE for dealing with scientific problems. The experimental results and analyses show both potential advantages of, and possible threats to applying GCE to scientific computing. For example, compared to Amazon's EC2 service, GCE may better suit applications that require frequent disk operations, while it may not be ready yet for single VM-based parallel computing. Following the same evaluation methodology, different evaluators can replicate and/or supplement this fundamental evaluation of GCE. Based on the fundamental evaluation results, suitable GCE environments can be further established for case studies of solving real science problems.

Abstract:Research on global environmental change requires new data processing and analysis tools that can integrate heterogeneous geospatial data from real-time in situ measurement, remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GISs) at the global scale. The rapid growth of virtual globes for global geospatial information management and display holds promise to meet such a requirement. Virtual globes, Google Earth in particular, enable scientists around the world to communicate their data and research findings in an intuitive three-dimensional (3D) global perspective. Different from traditional GIS, virtual globes are low cost and easy to use in data collection, exploration and visualization. Since 2005, a considerable number of papers have been published in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings from a variety of disciplines. In this review, we examine the development and applications of Google Earth and highlight its merits and limitations for Earth science studies at the global scale. Most limitations are not unique to Google Earth, but to all virtual globe products. Several recent efforts to increase the functionalities in virtual globes for studies at the global scale are introduced. The power of virtual globes in their current generations is mostly restricted to functions as a ‘geobrowser’; a better virtual globe tool for Earth science and global environmental change studies is described.

Abstract:Climate reanalysis and climate projection datasets offer the potential for researchers, students and instructors to access physically informed, global scale, temporally and spatially continuous climate data from the latter half of the 20th century to present, and explore different potential future climates. While these data are of significant use to research and teaching within biological, environmental and social sciences, potential users often face barriers to processing and accessing the data that cannot be overcome without specialist knowledge, facilities or assistance. Consequently, climate reanalysis and projection data are currently substantially under-utilised within research and education communities. To address this issue, we present two simple "point-and-click" graphical user interfaces: the Google Earth Engine Climate Tool (GEEClimT), providing access to climate reanalysis data products; and Google Earth Engine CMIP6 Explorer (GEECE), allowing processing and extraction of CMIP6 projection data, including the ability to create custom model ensembles. Together GEEClimT and GEECE provide easy access to over 387 terabytes of data that can be output in commonly used spreadsheet (CSV) or raster (GeoTIFF) formats to aid subsequent offline analysis. Data included in the two tools include: 20 atmospheric, terrestrial and oceanic reanalysis data products; a new dataset of annual resolution climate variables (comparable to WorldClim) calculated from ERA5-Land data for 1950-2022; and CMIP6 climate projection output for 34 model simulations for historical, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. New data products can also be easily added to the tools as they become available within the Google Earth Engine Data Catalog. Five case studies that use data from both tools are also provided. These show that GEEClimT and GEECE are easily expandable tools that remove multiple barriers to entry that will open use of climate reanalysis and projection data to a new and wider range of users.

Abstract:Sentinel-1 satellites provide temporally dense and high spatial resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The open data policy and global coverage of Sentinel-1 make it a valuable data source for a wide range of SAR-based applications. In this regard, the Google Earth Engine is a key platform for large area analysis with preprocessed Sentinel-1 backscatter images available within a few days after acquisition. To preserve the information content and user freedom, some preprocessing steps (e.g., speckle filtering) are not applied on the ingested Sentinel-1 imagery as they can vary by application. In this technical note, we present a framework for preparing Sentinel-1 SAR backscatter Analysis-Ready-Data in the Google Earth Engine that combines existing and new Google Earth Engine implementations for additional border noise correction, speckle filtering and radiometric terrain normalization. The proposed framework can be used to generate Sentinel-1 Analysis-Ready-Data suitable for a wide range of land and inland water applications. The Analysis Ready Data preparation framework is implemented in the Google Earth Engine JavaScript and Python APIs.

Abstract:Environmental sensing via Earth Observation Satellites (EOS) is critically important for understanding Earth' biosphere. The last decade witnessed a "Klondike Gold Rush" era for ecological research given a growing multidisciplinary interest in EOS. Presently, the combination of repositories of remotely sensed big data, with cloud infrastructures granting exceptional analytical power, may now mark the emergence of a new paradigm in understanding spatio-temporal dynamics of ecological systems, by allowing appropriate scaling of environmental data to ecological phenomena at an unprecedented level. However, while some efforts have been made to combine remotely sensed data with (near) ground ecological observations, virtually no study has focused on multiple spatial and temporal scales over long time series, and on integrating different EOS sensors. Furthermore, there is still a lack of applications offering flexible approaches to deal with the scaling limits of multiple sensors, while ensuring high-quality data extraction at high resolution. We present GEE_xtract, an original EOS-based (Sentinel-2, Landsat, and MODIS) code operational within Google Earth Engine (GEE) to allow for straightforward preparation and extraction of remote sensing data matching the multiple spatio-temporal scales at which ecological processes occur. The GEE_xtract code consists of three main customisable operations: (1) time series imageries filtering and calibration; (2) calculation of comparable metrics across EOS sensors; (3) scaling of spatio-temporal remote sensing time series data from ground-based data. We illustrate the value of GEE_xtract with a complex case concerning the seasonal distribution of a threatened elusive bird, and highlight its broad application to a myriad of ecological phenomena. Being user-friendly designed and implemented in a widely used cloud platform (GEE), we believe our approach provides a major contribution to effectively extracting high-quality data that can be quickly computed for metrics time series, converted at any scale, and extracted from ground information. Additionally, the framework was prepared to facilitate comparative research initiatives and data-fusion approaches in ecological research.

Google Earth Engine for large-scale land use and land cover mapping: an object-based classification approach using spectral, textural and topographical factors

Abstract:Mapping the distribution and type of land use and land cover (LULC) is essential for watershed management. The Tigris-Euphrates basin is a transboundary region in the Middle East shared between six countries, but a recent fine-scale LULC map of the area is lacking. Using Landsat-8 time series, a 30-m resolution LULC map was produced for the Tigris-Euphrates basin. In total, 1184 Landsat scenes were processed within the Google Earth Engine (GEE). For the collection of ground truth data, differential manifestations of green cover were considered by dividing the study area into five climatic regions and the training samples were taken from each sub-region. To account for the temporal variation of LULC types, six two-month interval composite layers, including the spectral and thermal bands of Landsat-8, texture and spectral indices, as well as topographic factors were created for the target year 2019. Image segmentation and classification were performed using the simple non-iterative clustering (SNIC) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms, respectively. A computationally effective parallel processing approach was developed, which created a number of tiles and sub-tiles and a bulk command was converted into smaller parallel commands. The generated LULC map showed a satisfactory overall accuracy of 91.7%, with the highest User's accuracy in water and wetland, and the lowest in rainfed crop and rangeland and the highest Producer's accuracy in water and barren areas, and the lowest in garden and rangeland. This study highlights the necessity of using multi-temporal data for LULC mapping, in particular, multi-temporal NDVI, for the separation of different green cover types in arid and semi-arid environment.

Abstract:Geographic information science and technology is playing an increasingly important role in studies of global change and earth system science.To meet the demands of surface information collection,data management,spatial analysis and applications at the global scale,new software based on 3D coordinate systems is urgently needed. This paper introduces an integrated software platform for remote sensing and geographic information system based on Google Earth: Global Mapper(GM) and Global Analyst(GA).Besides the powerful spatial data browsing functions of Google Earth,this platform can be used for global surface information extraction and collection,database construction,map overlay,image processing,visualization,and spherical geospatial analysis.This platform complements the defects of traditional 2D based software,and changes the ways of data collection and management,which can better serve the global change and earth system science community.
Sky in Google Earth: The Next Frontier in Astronomical Data Discovery and Visualization

Abstract:Astronomy began as a visual science, first through careful observations of the sky using either an eyepiece or the naked eye, then on to the preservation of those images with photographic media and finally the digital encoding of that information via CCDs. This last step has enabled astronomy to move into a fully automated era -- where data is recorded, analyzed and interpreted often without any direct visual inspection. Sky in Google Earth completes that circle by providing an intuitive visual interface to some of the largest astronomical imaging surveys covering the full sky. By streaming imagery, catalogs, time domain data, and ancillary information directly to a user, Sky can provide the general public as well as professional and amateur astronomers alike with a wealth of information for use in education and research. We provide here a brief introduction to Sky in Google Earth, focusing on its extensible environment, how it may be integrated into the research process and how it can bring astronomical research to a broader community. With an open interface available on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, applications developed within Sky are accessible not just within the Google framework but through any visual browser that supports the Keyhole Markup Language. We present Sky as the embodiment of a virtual telescope.

Abstract:Mapping rice area is a critical resource planning task in many South Asia countries where rice is the primary crop. Remote sensing-based methods typically rely on domain knowledge, such as crop calendar and crop phenology, and supervised classification with ground truth samples. Applying such methods on Google Earth Engine (GEE) has been proven effective especially at large scale owing to the comprehensive and up-to-date data catalog and massive server-side processing power. However, writing scripts through the code editor requires users to program in JavaScript and understand GEE Application Programming Interface (API), which can be challenging for many researchers. Thus, this paper presents a GEE-based web application that aims to eliminate the programming requirements for data selection, preprocessing, and visualizations so that users can easily produce rice maps and refine ground truth collections through intuitive Graphical User Interfaces (GUI). This software includes 3 sub-module apps, namely the ground truth collection app, threshold-based rice mapping app, and classification-based rice mapping app. Users can customize data processing flow using GUI designed with Bootstrap, and the backend server uses GEE Python API, and a Google service account for authentication to execute the workflow on Google cloud servers. The experiment shows both the overall accuracy (OA) and Kappa scores of the mapping result are higher than 0.9 which suggests RiceMapEngine can significantly reduce the complexity and time costs it takes to produce accurate rice area maps and meet the demands of real-world stakeholders.

Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing

Abstract:We present our experiences using cloud computing to support data-intensive analytics on satellite imagery for commercial applications. Drawing from our background in high-performance computing, we draw parallels between the early days of clustered computing systems and the current state of cloud computing and its potential to disrupt the HPC market. Using our own virtual file system layer on top of cloud remote object storage, we demonstrate aggregate read bandwidth of 230 gigabytes per second using 512 Google Compute Engine (GCE) nodes accessing a USA multi-region standard storage bucket. This figure is comparable to the best HPC storage systems in existence. We also present several of our application results, including the identification of field boundaries in Ukraine, and the generation of a global cloud-free base layer from Landsat imagery.

Abstract:Big Data Analytics is an emerging field since massive storage and computing capabilities have been made available by advanced e-infrastructures. Earth and Environmental sciences are likely to benefit from Big Data Analytics techniques supporting the processing of the large number of Earth Observation datasets currently acquired and generated through observations and simulations. However, Earth Science data and applications present specificities in terms of relevance of the geospatial information, wide heterogeneity of data models and formats, and complexity of processing. Therefore, Big Earth Data Analytics requires specifically tailored techniques and tools. The EarthServer Big Earth Data Analytics engine offers a solution for coverage-type datasets, built around a high performance array database technology, and the adoption and enhancement of standards for service interaction (OGC WCS and WCPS). The EarthServer solution, led by the collection of requirements from scientific communities and international initiatives, provides a holistic approach that ranges from query languages and scalability up to mobile access and visualization. The result is demonstrated and validated through the development of lighthouse applications in the Marine, Geology, Atmospheric, Planetary and Cryospheric science domains.

Abstract:Several satellite-based systems have been developed over the years to study and monitor thermal volcanic activity. Most of them use high temporal resolution satellite data, provided by sensors like the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) that if on the one hand guarantee a continuous monitoring of active volcanic areas on the other hand are less suited to map thermal anomalies, and to provide accurate information about their features. The Multispectral Instrument (MSI) and the Operational Land Imager (OLI), respectively, onboard the Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 satellites, providing Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) data at 20 m (MSI) and 30 m (OLI) spatial resolution, may make an important contribution in this area. In this work, we present the first Google Earth Engine (GEE) App to investigate, map and monitor volcanic thermal anomalies at global scale, integrating Landsat-8 OLI and Sentinel-2 MSI observations. This open tool, which implements the Normalized Hot spot Indices (NHI) algorithm, enables the analysis of more than 1400 active volcanoes, with very low processing times, thanks to the high GEE computational resources. Performance and limitations of the tool, such as its next upgrades, aiming at increasing the user-friendly experience and extending the temporal range of data analyses, are analyzed and discussed.
