Abstract:Research on global environmental change requires new data processing and analysis tools that can integrate heterogeneous geospatial data from real-time in situ measurement, remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GISs) at the global scale. The rapid growth of virtual globes for global geospatial information management and display holds promise to meet such a requirement. Virtual globes, Google Earth in particular, enable scientists around the world to communicate their data and research findings in an intuitive three-dimensional (3D) global perspective. Different from traditional GIS, virtual globes are low cost and easy to use in data collection, exploration and visualization. Since 2005, a considerable number of papers have been published in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings from a variety of disciplines. In this review, we examine the development and applications of Google Earth and highlight its merits and limitations for Earth science studies at the global scale. Most limitations are not unique to Google Earth, but to all virtual globe products. Several recent efforts to increase the functionalities in virtual globes for studies at the global scale are introduced. The power of virtual globes in their current generations is mostly restricted to functions as a ‘geobrowser’; a better virtual globe tool for Earth science and global environmental change studies is described.

Abstract:A new solution to designing a multi-perspective three-dimensional virtual urban map was proposed after studying the characteristics, the formation and the present technology of three-dimension maps. A new three- dimension model combined with some real cases was created on Google Sketchup. Google Earth Platform makes map sharing and issuing possible. The display of the geographic data of the same region can increase maps＇ geographic information and enrich map display methods, by which a more effective service can be provided for urban planning and building.

Abstract:Earth system science has changed rapidly due to global environmental changes and the advent of Earth observation technology. Therefore, new tools are required to monitor, measure, analyze, evaluate, and model Earth observation data. Google Earth (GE) was officially launched by Google in 2005 as a ”geobrowser”, and Google Earth Engine (GEE) was released in 2010 as a cloud computing platform with substantial computational capabilities. The use of these two tools or platforms in various applications, particularly as used by the remote sensing community, has developed rapidly. In this paper, we reviewed the applications and trends in the use of GE and GEE by analyzing peer-reviewed articles, dating up to January 2021, in the Web of Science (WoS) core collection using scientometric analysis (i.e., by using CiteSpace) and meta-analysis. We found the following: (1) the number of articles describing the use of GE or GEE increased substantially from two in 2006 to 530 in 2020. The number of GEE articles increased much faster than those concerned with the use of GE. (2) Both GE and GEE were extensively used by the remote sensing community as multidisciplinary tools. GE articles covered a broader range of research areas (e.g., biology, education, disease and health, economic, and information science) and appeared in a broader range of journals than those concerned with the use of GEE. (3) GE and GEE shared similar keywords (e.g., “land cover”, “water”, “model”, “vegetation”, and “forest”), which indicates that their application is of great importance in certain research areas. The main difference was that articles describing the use of GE emphasized its use as a visual display platform, while those concerned with GEE placed more emphasis on big data and time-series analysis. (4) Most applications of GE and GEE were undertaken in countries, such as the United States, China, and the United Kingdom. (5) GEE is an important tool for analysis, whereas GE is used as an auxiliary tool for visualization. Finally, in this paper, the merits and limitations of GE and GEE, and recommendations for further improvements, are summarized from an Earth system science perspective.

Multi-Temporal Mapping of Soil Total Nitrogen Using Google Earth Engine Across the Shandong Province of China

Abstract:Nitrogen plays an important role in improving soil productivity and maintaining ecosystem stability. Mapping and monitoring the soil total nitrogen (STN) content is the basis for modern soil management. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform covers a wide range of available satellite remote sensing datasets and can process massive data calculations. We collected 6823 soil samples in Shandong Province, China. The random forest (RF) algorithm predicted the STN content in croplands from 2002 to 2016 in Shandong Province, China on the GEE platform. Our results showed that RF had the coefficient of determination (R2) (0.57), which can predict the spatial distribution of the STN and analyze the trend of STN changes. The remote sensing spectral reflectance is more important in model building according to the variable importance analysis. From 2002 to 2016, the STN content of cropland in the province had an upward trend of 35.6%, which increased before 2010 and then decreased slightly. The GEE platform provides an opportunity to map dynamic changes of the STN content effectively, which can be used to evaluate soil properties in the future long-term agricultural management.

Abstract:Geographic information science and technology is playing an increasingly important role in studies of global change and earth system science.To meet the demands of surface information collection,data management,spatial analysis and applications at the global scale,new software based on 3D coordinate systems is urgently needed. This paper introduces an integrated software platform for remote sensing and geographic information system based on Google Earth: Global Mapper(GM) and Global Analyst(GA).Besides the powerful spatial data browsing functions of Google Earth,this platform can be used for global surface information extraction and collection,database construction,map overlay,image processing,visualization,and spherical geospatial analysis.This platform complements the defects of traditional 2D based software,and changes the ways of data collection and management,which can better serve the global change and earth system science community.

Abstract:Accurate and up-to-date built-up area mapping is of great importance to the science community, decision-makers, and society. Therefore, satellite-based, built-up area (BUA) extraction at medium resolution with supervised classification has been widely carried out. However, the spectral confusion between BUA and bare land (BL) is the primary hindering factor for accurate BUA mapping over large regions. Here we propose a new methodology for the efficient BUA extraction using multi-sensor data under Google Earth Engine cloud computing platform. The proposed method mainly employs intra-annual satellite imagery for water and vegetation masks, and a random-forest machine learning classifier combined with auxiliary data to discriminate between BUA and BL. First, a vegetation mask and water mask are generated using NDVI (normalized differenced vegetation index) max in vegetation growth periods and the annual water-occurrence frequency. Second, to accurately extract BUA from unmasked pixels, consisting of BUA and BL, random-forest-based classification is conducted using multi-sensor features, including temperature, night-time light, backscattering, topography, optical spectra, and NDVI time-series metrics. This approach is applied in Zhejiang Province, China, and an overall accuracy of 92.5% is obtained, which is 3.4% higher than classification with spectral data only. For large-scale BUA mapping, it is feasible to enhance the performance of BUA mapping with multi-temporal and multi-sensor data, which takes full advantage of datasets available in Google Earth Engine.

Abstract:Preparing experiment-ready images is a labor-intensive but necessary process for almost all remote sensing related studies. This short communication introduces a software to efficiently acquire large-scale high-quality and cloud-free Landsat images to support subsequent analysis and applications. The software fully leverages Google Earth Engine's processing of huge amount of remote sensing images, and the visualization on the availability and accessibility of Landsat images provided by heatmaps at both regional and global scales. The cloud percentage property and quality bands of Landsat surface reflectance products are used for masking clouds, cloud shadows, snow/ice, and low-quality pixels in this study. The software can be applied to effectively choose study areas and prepare data in different fields, such as hydrology, ecology, and human activities. This functioning open-source software can be accessible via GitHub webpages in both JavaScript and Python formats.

Abstract:Google Earth Engine (GEE) serves as a versatile platform for processing and visualising geospatial datasets, with its primary aim being to provide an open platform for planetary-scale geospatial analysis. Over time, GEE has proven itself as a valuable and robust tool, offering access to a wide array of imagery within a single consolidated system. Its cloud computing environment and computational power eradicate the need to store, process and analyse vast amount of satellite imagery on local computers. GEE has the potential to address some of the challenges associated with earth observation and geospatial applications, particularly in developing countries. Its development has lessened the reliance on high-speed processors and extensive storage capacities. Moreover, GEE presents users with a unique opportunity to conduct analyses with minimal financial investment and equipment requirements. The platform has showcased its capability to perform spatial and temporal analyses on global-scale data at significantly accelerated computational speed, rendering it an attractive tool for the scientific community, offering both versatility and accessibility. Its application spread across various sectors including crop inventory, vegetation mapping and monitoring, land cover mapping, disaster management, hydrological studies, urban planning and management, wetland conservation and management, climate change analysis and forestry analysis. For researchers in developing countries, who often grapple with challenges related to data accessibility, funding for computer hardware and software and resource limitations, GEE opens up new avenues. However, despite its potential, the utilization of GEE in developing countries has fallen short of expectations. Therefore, it is crucial for developing countries to fully leverage this platform to accelerate their sustainable development.

Towards an open and synergistic framework for mapping global land cover

Abstract:Global land-cover datasets are key sources of information for understanding the complex inter-actions between human activities and global change. They are also among the most critical variables for climate change studies. Over time, the spatial resolution of land cover maps has increased from the kilometer scale to 10-m scale. Single-type historical land cover datasets, including for forests, water, and impervious surfaces, have also been developed in recent years. In this study, we present an open and synergy framework to produce a global land cover dataset that combines supervised land cover classification and aggregation of existing multiple thematic land cover maps with the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform. On the basis of this method of classification and mosaicking, we derived a global land cover dataset for 6 years over a time span of 25 years. The overall accuracies of the six maps were around 75% and the accuracy for change area detection was over 70%. Our product also showed good similarity with the FAO and existing land cover maps.

Abstract:Astronomy began as a visual science, first through careful observations of the sky using either an eyepiece or the naked eye, then on to the preservation of those images with photographic media and finally the digital encoding of that information via CCDs. This last step has enabled astronomy to move into a fully automated era -- where data is recorded, analyzed and interpreted often without any direct visual inspection. Sky in Google Earth completes that circle by providing an intuitive visual interface to some of the largest astronomical imaging surveys covering the full sky. By streaming imagery, catalogs, time domain data, and ancillary information directly to a user, Sky can provide the general public as well as professional and amateur astronomers alike with a wealth of information for use in education and research. We provide here a brief introduction to Sky in Google Earth, focusing on its extensible environment, how it may be integrated into the research process and how it can bring astronomical research to a broader community. With an open interface available on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, applications developed within Sky are accessible not just within the Google framework but through any visual browser that supports the Keyhole Markup Language. We present Sky as the embodiment of a virtual telescope.

SolidEarth: a new Digital Earth system for the modeling and visualization of the whole Earth space

Abstract:Although many of the first-generation Digital Earth systems have proven to be quite useful for the modeling and visualization of geospatial objects relevant to the Earth’s surface and near-surface, they were not designed for the purpose of modeling and application in geological or atmospheric space. There is a pressing need for a new Digital Earth system that can process geospatial information with full dimensionality. In this paper, we present a new Digital Earth system, termed SolidEarth, as an alternative virtual globe for the modeling and visualization of the whole Earth space including its surface, interior, and exterior space. SolidEarth consists of four functional components: modeling in geographical space, modeling in geological space, modeling in atmospheric space, and, integrated visualization and analysis. SolidEarth has a comprehensive treatment to the third spatial dimension and a series of sophisticated 3D spatial analysis functions. Therefore, it is well-suited to the volumetric representation and visual analysis of the inner/ outer spheres in Earth space. SolidEarth can be used in a number of fields such as geoscience research and education, the construction of Digital Earth applications, and other professional practices of Earth science.

Abstract:<p>To embrace the burgeoning land change science studies that exploit public-domain cloud-computing platforms such as Google Earth Engine (GEE), for the first time, we organized a special issue entitled "Remote Sensing of Land Change Science with Google Earth Engine" in the journal "Remote Sensing of Environment". This paper serves as a summary to a collection of 19 papers that have been published since the inception of the special issue in November 2017. In particular, we summarized their contributions with regard to two perspectives: what new themes of questions are articulated, what contributions have been made. Taking account of the disciplinary difference, we carried out the summary separately in two major science domains: Remote Sensing of Environment (RSE), i.e., naturally-induced land change, and Remote Sensing of Society (RSS), i.e., human-induced land change. Furthermore, we presented a historical review of the developments of GEE-relevant studies published before our special issue. Finally, we provided a future prospect on how GEE will continue to evolve to further the study of land change science.</p>

Abstract:The ocean carbon cycle has a significant influence on global climate, and is commonly evaluated using time-series satellite-derived CO2 flux data. Location-aware and globe-based visualization is an important technique for analyzing and presenting the evolution of climate change. To achieve realistic simulation of the spatiotemporal dynamics of ocean carbon, a cloud-driven digital earth platform is developed to support the interactive analysis and display of multi-geospatial data, and an original visualization method based on our digital earth is proposed to demonstrate the spatiotemporal variations of carbon sinks and sources using time-series satellite data. Specifically, a volume rendering technique using half-angle slicing and particle system is implemented to dynamically display the released or absorbed CO2 gas. To enable location-aware visualization within the virtual globe, we present a 3D particlemapping algorithm to render particle-slicing textures onto geospace. In addition, a GPU-based interpolation framework using CUDA during real-time rendering is designed to obtain smooth effects in both spatial and temporal dimensions. To demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed method, a series of satellite data is applied to simulate the air-sea carbon cycle in the China Sea. The results show that the suggested strategies provide realistic simulation effects and acceptable interactive performance on the digital earth.

Abstract:Sustainability challenges demand solutions, and the pace of technological and scientific advances in physical geography and Earth observation have great potential to provide the information needed to address these challenges. This paper highlights five online tools and initiatives that are lifting barriers to address these challenges. The enviroGRIDS project in the Black Sea catchment demonstrates how the use of spatial data infrastructures can facilitate data sharing. Google Earth Engine is providing solutions to challenges of processing big data into usable information. Additionally, application programming interfaces allow outsiders to elaborate and iterate on programs to explore novel uses of data and models, as seen in the Berkeley Ecoinformatics Engine. Finally, collaborative mapping tools, such as Seasketch/MarineMap and the InVEST software suite, allow engagement within and between groups of experts and stakeholders for the development, deployment, and long-term impact of a project. Merging these different experiences can set a new standard for online information tools supporting sustainable development from evidence brought by physical geography combined with socioeconomic conditions.

An online tool with Google Earth Engine and cellular automata for seamlessly simulating global urban expansion at high resolutions

Abstract:Projecting global urban expansion is crucial for environmental assessment under climate change scenarios. However, existing global future urban land products are typically provided at coarse resolutions (1 km) due to data and computing limitations. This hinders the accurate assessment of the impacts of global urban development at finer scales. Thus, we develop the first Cellular Automata (CA) online tool for simulating future global urban expansion in Google Earth Engine (GEE-CA), which can simulate future urban land change at a 30 m resolution under different SSP scenarios. GEE-CA enables seamless simulations of future urban land at high resolution through a partitioned parallel strategy. Seven large urban agglomerations are simulated under shared socioeconomic pathways as representative regions to present our fine-scale results. Comparatively, our datasets preserve significantly more spatial details than existing global urban land products. The improvement in resolution from 1 km to 30 m reduces errors by a range from 7.11% to 21.27% in the estimation of future urban area. So far, the proposed GEE-CA tool allows users to generate urban land projection maps for any defined region with a resolution as high as 30 m.

Abstract:In hazard management, earthquake researchers have utilized GIS to ease the process of managing disasters. Researchers use WebGIS to assess hazards and seismic risk. Although they can provide a visual analysis platform based on GIS technology, they lack a general description in the extensibility of WebGIS for processing dynamic data, especially real-time data. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for real-time 3D visual earthquake information publishing model based on WebGIS and digital globe to improve the ability of processing real-time data in systems based on WebGIS. On the basis of the model, we implement a real-time 3D earthquake information publishing system—EqMap3D. The system can not only publish real-time earthquake information but also display these data and their background geoscience information in a 3D scene. It provides a powerful tool for display, analysis, and decision-making for researchers and administrators. It also facilitates better communication between researchers engaged in geosciences and the interested public.

Abstract:Remote sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GISs) provide significant opportunities for monitoring and managing natural resources across various temporal, spectral, and spatial resolutions. There is a critical need for natural resource managers to understand the expanding capabilities of image sources, analysis techniques, and in situ validation methods. This article reviews key image analysis tools in natural resource management, highlighting their unique strengths across diverse applications such as agriculture, forestry, water resources, soil management, and natural hazard monitoring. Google Earth Engine (GEE), a cloud-based platform introduced in 2010, stands out for its vast geospatial data catalog and scalability, making it ideal for global-scale analysis and algorithm development. ENVI, known for advanced multi- and hyperspectral image processing, excels in vegetation monitoring, environmental analysis, and feature extraction. ERDAS IMAGINE specializes in radar data analysis and LiDAR processing, offering robust classification and terrain analysis capabilities. Global Mapper is recognized for its versatility, supporting over 300 data formats and excelling in 3D visualization and point cloud processing, especially in UAV applications. eCognition leverages object-based image analysis (OBIA) to enhance classification accuracy by grouping pixels into meaningful objects, making it effective in environmental monitoring and urban planning. Lastly, QGIS integrates these remote sensing tools with powerful spatial analysis functions, supporting decision-making in sustainable resource management. Together, these tools when paired with in situ data provide comprehensive solutions for managing and analyzing natural resources across scales.

Abstract:This study introduces a new automated system that blends multi-satellite information and citizen science data for reliable and timely observations of lake and river ice in under-observed northern regions. The system leverages the Google Earth Engine resources to facilitate the analysis and visualization of ice conditions. The adopted approach utilizes a combination of moderate and high-resolution optical data, along with radar observations. The results demonstrate the system's capability to accurately detect and monitor river ice, particularly during key periods, such as the freeze-up and the breakup. The integration citizen science data showed added values in the validation of remote sensing products, as well as filling gaps whenever satellite observations cannot be collected due to cloud obstruction. Moreover, it was shown that citizen science data can be converted to valuable quantitative information, such as the case of ice thickness, which is very useful when combined with ice extent derived from remote sensing. In this study, citizen science data were employed for the quantitative assessment of the remote sensing product. Obtained results showed a good agreement between the product and observed river status, with a Critical Success Index of 0.82. Notably, the system has shown effectiveness in capturing the spatial and temporal evolution of snow and ice conditions, as evidenced by its application in analyzing specific ice jam events in 2023. The study concludes that the developed system marks a significant advancement in river ice monitoring, combining technological innovation with community engagement.
