Abstract:Media and communication are attracting increasing amounts of attention from geographers but the work remains disorganized and lacks a unifying paradigm. This progress report suggests a new paradigm for geographical studies of media and communication and indicates how recent research fits under this umbrella. The report presents recent studies of literature, film and television, digital media, photography, comics, stamps and banknotes. The range of theoretical concerns in this body of work includes performance, agency, materiality, immateriality, networks, politics, emotions and affect. Collectively, these concerns point to communications not merely as transmissions through infrastructure, space and time, but rather as encounters between various human and nonhuman agents. The metaphysical question is exactly what such encounters do to participants – how agents are transformed by other agents’ communications. This leads to synthesis in a new paradigm for media/communication geography: the metaphysics of encounter.

Abstract:Rick Dolphijn and Iris van der Tuin claim that new materialism, as "a cultural theory for the twenty-first century" (110), "is in many ways a wave approaching its crest" (16). Indeed a growing field of contemporary analysis, new materialism's contributions are broad and multidisciplinary, and its responses varied. The authors argue that new materialism, being both an "important but poorly defined force in contemporary academia . . . stands in need of conceptualization" (92). With this text, Dolphijn and van der Tuin set themselves to this task, performing what they term a "mapping" (71) of new materialism that reveals the monist or "immanent" (96) orientations in its rethinking of humanism, dualism, and linear time, with its concomitant possibilities for a transversal and affirmative methodology, or "practical philosophy."

Abstract:Earth's interior, I posit, is like one of the rare, oxygen-starved "enstatite chondrite" meteorites (and unlike a more-oxidized "ordinary chondrite" as has been believed for seventy years). Laboratory-analyzed enstatite-chondrite samples are comparable to having-in-hand impossibleto- gather deep-Earth samples. Enstatite-chondrite formation in oxygen-starved conditions caused oxygen-loving elements to occur, in part, as non-oxides in their iron-alloy. Observations, consistent with solar abundance and behavior of chemical elements, lead me to a new interpretation of: (1) Earth's early formation as a Jupiter-like gas-giant, (2) its decompressionpowered surface geology, (3) Earth's internal composition, and (4) a natural, planetocentric nuclear-fission reactor as source of both the geomagnetic field and energy channeled to surface "hot-spots". I present a unified vision of Earth formation and concomitant dynamics that explains in a logical and causally related way: (1) fluid Earth-core formation without wholeplanet melting, and (2) the myriad measurements and observations, previously attributed to "plate tectonics", but without necessitating mantle convection.

The arrival of the Anthropocene in social theory: From modernism and Marxism towards a new materialism

Abstract:The Sociological Review, Ahead of Print. Since its origin in the natural sciences in the early 2000s, the concept of the Anthropocene has spread far and wide. Following the concept's journey away from the natural sciences, where it was invented to designate the advent of a new geological epoch, and into the social and human sciences, its meaning has opened up to many different interpretations. This article examines three competing theoretical narratives about the Anthropocene, which have gained particular traction within social and political theory in recent years: The 'good' Anthropocene promoted by ecomodernists. The 'bad' Anthropocene, or so-called Capitalocene, critiqued by eco-Marxists. And, lastly, the 'uncanny' Anthropocene envisioned by new materialists. These three stories differ not only in their interpretation of the Anthropocene, they also engender notably different political responses. Echoing the insights of new materialists such as Jane Bennett, Bruno Latour and Donna Haraway, the article argues that we cannot rely on a single grand narrative of the Anthropocene today. What is needed, instead, is the proliferation of a multiplicity of different Anthropocene stories: situated, troubling and more-than-human stories that seek to displace idiosyncratic notions of the autonomous human subject so that we might begin to see what else is there.

A new understanding of ‘New Media’: Online platforms as digital mediums

Abstract:For the last few decades, media theorists have been faced with the understanding that the networked digital computer is the meta-medium to end all mediums. This places researchers in the curious position where online platforms, such as YouTube, cannot legitimately and directly be contrasted with traditional analogue mediums, such as cinema and television. To address this inconsistency, I developed the theory of foundation technologies and their respective proto-affordances, which demonstrates the existence of past periods of ‘new media’. These were brought about by the introduction of key technologies that each offered, at the time, a new and unique underlying affordance to a society. Each new ‘proto-affordance’ inspired social disruption, as new specific mediums were spawned – each remediating existing mediums of similar mode. This framework shows digitality as another evolutionary step in a line of foundation technologies, which includes the artefact, the machine and electricity. The theory of foundation technologies permits software-based online platforms, such as YouTube, SoundCloud and Twitter, to be called digital mediums, and thus aids in understanding their technological substrate and unique affordances. Justifying this relation between old mediums and new, digital, ones equips us to more effectively comprehend and analyse these platforms as to their social adoption and uses, cultural practices, implications and effects. This allows us to better understand and control our present, and even guide our potential future.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, the critical vocabulary of the environmental humanities has shifted. After a decade burgeoning with new materialist explorations of intra-active entanglements and nonhuman vitalities, scholars are today becoming increasingly interested in the environmental effects of capitalism, its ecological rifts, fossil economy, and omnipresent wastescapes. Driving this shift is a reinvigoration of eco-Marxist thinking, which not only offers new focus points but also launches philosophical polemics against the field’s longstanding turn to matter. Facing these polemics, scholars in the environmental humanities are currently facing a difficult choice: should we opt for an “old” or a “new” materialism? This essay argues that this confrontation between new materialism and eco-Marxism pivots not on ontological differences, as is often assumed, but on diverging attitudes toward critical methodologies. It claims specifically that many of the recent polemics practice a kind of philosophical shadowboxing that blurs a more fundamental disagreement about the role and status of “critique.” Staging an encounter between Andreas Malm’s The Progress of This Storm (2018) and Jane Bennett’s Influx and Efflux (2020), the essay makes its case by demonstrating, first, how an attachment to critical methodologies drives eco-Marxists to polemicize against ontologies that, in fact, resemble their own. It then shows how new materialists advance such ontologies to supplement these critical methodologies with more affectively engaged modes of scholarship. By framing the debate in this way, the essay ultimately aims to push back against the methodological dogmatism of eco-Marxists who take critique to be the only legitimate mode of inquiry.

Abstract:Abstract This article discusses new developments in the field of literary theory and literary praxis in the era of new media from the perspectives of media theory and interology. It takes new media as a McLuhanesque formal cause and holds that a conspicuous characteristic of literary works in the era of new media lies in the salience and normalization of interality. This development means art forms like mosaic and Pointillism have acquired a paradigmatic significance as a result. In revealing this new paradigm, the article also points to some current social maladies that have come with new media. It holds that literary writing should go beyond the mere embodiment of symptoms and make an intervention in media-induced maladies. The article affirms the irreplaceability of experimental literature and serious literature in an era of attention deficit, and points out that form should occupy a paramount position in literary theory, literary criticism, and literary praxis.

Abstract:This first of three cultural geographies progress reports explores the place of creative practices in the production, consumption and circulation of cultural geographies in recent years. In the midst of the expansion of geographers using creative research methods, or collaborating with practitioners, I consider the calls for critical accounts of these forms of making geographical knowledge. I argue that the idea of ‘medium’ has emerged as an important frame for such accountings. Discussion explores firstly, the importance of the ‘post-medium’ transdisciplinary field, and secondly, the persistence of medium in shaping relations between cultural geography and creative practices.

This article embraces the practical extension of the latest scientific and technological methods that are starting to emerge within what is increasingly being called the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As a launching pad for this special edition of this new journal, our article maps a forum for transdisciplinary discussion and in-depth analysis on the nature and development of humanities, as well as the latter‘s interface with other disciplines, as they are being shaped by new technologies, new analytical languages, new software and new creative and analytical participatory paradigms. This article provides an overview of the volume as a whole.

Abstract:On the face of it, the notion of non-media-centric media studies appears to be a contradiction in terms. Surely those who are working in media studies will put media at the centre of their investigations and explanations of social life? In the following conversation, three advocates of a non-media-centric approach discuss their ways into the field of media studies at different points in its development, and together they explore their overlapping empirical research interests as well as their theoretical, methodological and pedagogical concerns. Topics that feature in this exchange include the linked mobilities of information, people and commodities, the articulation of material and virtual geographies, and the meaningfulness of everyday, embodied practices. Out of the dialogue emerges a renewed call for media studies that acknowledge the particularities of media, but which are about more than simply studying media and which seek to recover the field’s early spirit of interdisciplinary adventure.

Abstract:There are a number of important technological changes in the history of human civilization.They often bring about revolutionary significance in the development of media.Mobile newspapers,digital journals,e-books and many other new media forms mark the arrival of the digital media age.New media technology has changed the form of newspapers,periodicals and books,as well as the way in which communication and cultural transmission take place.The great impact of new media turns out to be very similar to that of theory of cultural transmission pattern proposed by an anthropologist,Margaret Mead.The development of digital print media makes the experience of the new generation different from the previous ones,which reflects a reverse socialization procedure in Post-figurative culture.The reason for Post-figurative culture to turn into a new mode of cultural transmission is that changes in the world are always caused by the people who want to subvert the traditional ideas and concepts.In addition,the change in cultural transmission mode will influence the pattern of cultural production.

Abstract:Journal of Communication Inquiry, Ahead of Print. This essay complicates interpretations of digital architectures in online journalism production in terms of journalistic interlopers and intralopers during an age of increased influence of technologists on online news development. While much normative scholarship revolves around social media, metrics, algorithms, artificial intelligence, VR, and other forms of digital innovation applied to journalism, the essay argues that such work must not focus merely on the actions of today's tech-savvy journalism but should interrogate social and cultural relationships at the center of journalistic production so not to as become distracted away from the embedded practices of ideological incorporation that shapes media messages and reproduces inequalities through what and how journalism covers. In the future, as we approach a notion of the Metaverse, scholars must interrogate the long-standing embedding of elite ideologies into the news as journalists collaborate with technologists (or as journalists become technologists), interact (and re-interact) with elite ideologies at accelerating rates in networked societies, and move into new digital realms we have not yet imagined.

Abstract:This article explores the relationship between the concept of fossils and contemporary non-fiction cinema. Focusing on the space-time of cinema, materiality, and eco-feminism, in the attempt to represent the natural environment, the human being is no longer at the centre of the representation. Contemporary film subjects range instead from the stones’ iconography to the image’s survival, the archive, and its activation in the digital age. By analysing selected works by contemporary film-makers – Barbara Hammer, Deborah Stratman, Ana Vaz, Adrián Balseca, Eloïse Le Gallo, Julia Borderie and many others – this research aims to cover contemporary productions from an aesthetic and narrative perspective and see how new strategies are established to represent the natural world in the Anthropocene.

Geomorphology in the Anthropocene: Perspectives from the Past, Pointers for the Future?

Abstract:The term Anthropocene has been introduced to highlight the fact humans have, directly or indirectly - accidentally or intentionally - profoundly transformed the earth system. There is much debate as to whether the magnitude and extent of such change is geologically distinctive and, accordingly, warrants formal designation as a new epoch although, irrespective of this, the magnitude of change is undoubtedly significant. In order to put the Anthropocene into perspective, the chapter briefly reviews various systemic and cumulative drivers of geomorphic change before going on to explore the time-transgressive impacts of humans on virtually all environments of the earth. This is followed by a consideration of three instructive case studies of how the deleterious effects of growing numbers of people using increasingly sophisticated technologies are expressed geomorphologically across a range of environments. The problems of accelerated soil erosion, the impact of large dams and the nature and extent of artificial ground are used to highlight the important role that geomorphology plays in understanding the burgeoning footprint of humanity on earth systems. The Quaternary record offers a foundational understanding of baseline conditions of earth system processes and responses and facilitates increased confidence in evaluating the magnitude of past and future global climate change and its diverse effects. A quarter of a century on from the first IPCC report, the degree to which the strength of its statements, and the confidence with which they are made, is rooted in a better understanding of longer-term past changes should not be underestimated. The fact that geomorphology may still be a 'Cinderella' in relation to studies of environmental change is ongoing cause for concern and, if we are to illuminate the range of options available to mitigate and adapt to future change, we need systematically to incorporate a stronger geomorphological perspective into global change science; the Anthropocene represents an appropriate platform from which to inject that perspective.

Abstract:Recent approaches to media change have convincingly shown that distinctions between old and new media are inadequate to describe the complexity of present and past technological configurations. Yet, oldness and newness remain powerful ways to describe and understand media change and continue to direct present-day perceptions and interactions with a wide range of technologies – from vinyl records to artificial intelligence voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa. How can one refuse rigid definitions of old and new, while at the same time retaining the usefulness and pertinence of these concepts for the study and analysis of media change? This introduction to the special issue entitled ‘Rethinking the Distinctions between Old and New Media’ aims to answer this question by taking up the notion of biography. We argue that the recurrence of oldness and newness as categories to describe media is strictly related to the fact that interactions with media are embedded within a biographical understanding of time, which refers both to the life course of people or objects and to the narratives that are created and disseminated about them. Employing this approach entails considering the history of a medium against the history of the changing definitions that are attributed to it and, more broadly, to considering time not only as such but also against the narratives that make it thinkable and understandable.
