Abstract:Introductions or invasions of nonnative organisms can mediate major changes in the trophic structure of aquatic ecosystems. Here we document multitrophic level impacts in a spatially extensive system that played out over more than a century. Positive interactions among exotic vertebrate and invertebrate predators caused a substantial and abrupt shift in community composition resulting in a trophic cascade that extended to primary producers and to a nonaquatic species, the bald eagle. The opossum shrimp, Mysis diluviana, invaded Flathead Lake, Montana, the largest freshwater lake in the western United States. Lake trout had been introduced 80 y prior but remained at low densities until nonnative Mysis became established. The bottom-dwelling mysids eliminated a recruitment bottleneck for lake trout by providing a deep water source of food where little was available previously. Lake trout subsequently flourished on mysids and this voracious piscivore now dominates the lake fishery; formerly abundant kokanee were extirpated, and native bull and westslope cutthroat trout are imperiled. Predation by Mysis shifted zooplankton and phytoplankton community size structure. Bayesian change point analysis of primary productivity (27-y time series) showed a significant step increase of 55 mg C m(-2) d(-1) (i.e., 21% rise) concurrent with the mysid invasion, but little trend before or after despite increasing nutrient loading. Mysis facilitated predation by lake trout and indirectly caused the collapse of kokanee, redirecting energy flow through the ecosystem that would otherwise have been available to other top predators (bald eagles).

Abstract:Non-native species have invaded most ecosystems and methods are needed to manage them, especially in locations with sensitive species where they cannot be easily extirpated. Gillnetting for invasive lake trout [ Salvelinus namaycush (Walbaum, 1792)] in Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park, USA began in 1995 and their carcasses are deposited into deep areas. This suppression method was recently supplemented by adding carcasses to shallow (< 20 m) spawning sites during the autumn spawning period to decrease dissolved oxygen through decomposition, suffocating lake trout embryos. We measured ammonium concentrations (shallow and deep sites), algal biomass, and ammonium uptake by phytoplankton and periphyton (shallow sites only) to investigate the degree to which carcasses caused bottom-up effects. Ammonium concentrations increased in autumn and were higher at deep sites than shallow sites. Algal biomass and ammonium uptake did not increase after adding carcasses, suggesting minimal effects. Periphyton biomass was 9 times higher than phytoplankton, but phytoplankton demanded 4.5 times more ammonium. Returning lake trout carcasses to deep areas of the lake may cause a second algal bloom. Assessing how novel management techniques alter the environment helps managers develop the most successful mitigation strategies that are effective without causing adverse effects to other portions of the ecosystem.

Abstract:The native Yellowstone cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri; YCT) of Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, comprise a metapopulation that inhabits an ecologically simple and uniquely pristine environment. A recent study Bayesian fit an age‐structured Leslie model that had a local climate index (total annual mean‐daily air temperatures >0°C at the lake's north shore) as its only driver (regulating age‐0 YCT survival) to data for a key YCT spawning stock (median fish age, 5 years) from 1977 to 1992, before predation from an illegally introduced and growing lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) population (1994 discovery) measurably affected YCT population dynamics. Results showed the new climate regime that began in the late 1970s had an overarching effect and largely explained declining spawning runs, although a growing predation effect became evident near lake trout discovery and quickly became the major YCT population driver. In the present study, that model was likewise fitted to estimated abundances of age‐5 YCT (~75% mature) that had been annually (also 1977–1992) gill‐netted from Yellowstone Lake and thus characterized the metapopulation. Results showed age‐0 YCT survival declined when a climate index of 1440 was reached and exceeded. Metapopulation recovery to historically high levels requires that the climate index decline to and remain near or below 1440 and—as shown by another recent study—that the lake trout population be reduced to its mid‐1990s levels. The most recent time of evident YCT metapopulation persistence at historically high levels and broadest spatial extent occurred under those simultaneous conditions.

Life and death in a dynamic environment: Invasive trout, floods, and intraspecific drivers of translocated populations

Abstract:Understanding the relative strengths of intrinsic and extrinsic factors regulating populations is a long-standing focus of ecology and critical to advancing conservation programs for imperiled species. Conservation could benefit from an increased understanding of factors influencing vital rates (somatic growth, recruitment, survival) in small, translocated populations, which is lacking owing to difficulties in long-term monitoring of rare species. Translocations, here defined as the transfer of wild-captured individuals from source populations to new habitats, are widely used for species conservation, but outcomes are often minimally monitored, and translocations that are monitored often fail. To improve our understanding of how translocated populations respond to environmental variation, we developed and tested hypotheses related to intrinsic (density dependent) and extrinsic (introduced rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, stream flow and temperature regime) causes of vital rate variation in endangered humpback chub (Gila cypha) populations translocated to Colorado River tributaries in the Grand Canyon (GC), USA. Using biannual recapture data from translocated populations over 10 years, we tested hypotheses related to seasonal somatic growth, and recruitment and population growth rates with linear mixed-effects models and temporal symmetry mark-recapture models. We combined data from recaptures and resights of dispersed fish (both physical captures and continuously recorded antenna detections) from throughout GC to test survival hypotheses, while accounting for site fidelity, using joint live-recapture/live-resight models. While recruitment only occurred in one site, which also drove population growth (relative to survival), evidence supported hypotheses related to density dependence in growth, survival, and recruitment, and somatic growth and recruitment were further limited by introduced trout. Mixed-effects models explained between 67% and 86% of the variation in somatic growth, which showed increased growth rates with greater flood-pulse frequency during monsoon season. Monthly survival was 0.56-0.99 and 0.80-0.99 in the two populations, with lower survival during periods of higher intraspecific abundance and low flood frequency. Our results suggest translocations can contribute toward the recovery of large-river fishes, but continued suppression of invasive fishes to enhance recruitment may be required to ensure population resilience. Furthermore, we demonstrate the importance of flooding to population demographics in food-depauperate, dynamic, invaded systems.
Climate warming moderates the impacts of introduced sportfish on multiple dimensions of prey biodiversity

Abstract:Human‐assisted introductions of exotic species are a leading cause of anthropogenic change in biodiversity; however, context dependencies and interactions with co‐occurring stressors impede our ability to predict their ecological impacts. The legacy of historical sportfish stocking in mountainous regions of western North America creates a unique, natural quasi‐experiment to investigate factors moderating invasion impacts on native communities across broad geographic and environmental gradients. Here, we synthesize fish stocking records and zooplankton relative abundance for 685 mountain lakes and ponds in the Cascade and Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranges, to reveal the effects of predatory sportfish introduction on multiple taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic dimensions of prey biodiversity. We demonstrate an innovative analytical approach, combining exploratory random forest machine learning with confirmatory multigroup analysis using multivariate partial least‐squares structural equation models, to generate and test hypotheses concerning environmental moderation of stocking impacts. We discovered distinct effects of stocking across different dimensions of diversity, including negligible (nonsignificant) impacts on local taxonomic richness (i.e. alpha diversity) and trophic structure, in contrast to significant declines in compositional uniqueness (i.e. beta diversity) and body size. Further, we found that stocking impacts were moderated by cross‐scale interactions with climate and climate‐related land‐cover variables (e.g. factors linked to treeline position and glaciers). Interactions with physical morphometric and lithological factors were generally of lesser importance, though catchment slope and habitat size constraints were relevant in certain dimensions. Finally, applying space‐for‐time substitution, a strong antagonistic (i.e. dampening) interaction between sportfish predation and warmer temperatures suggests redundancy of their size‐selective effects, meaning that warming will lessen the consequences of introductions in the future and stocked lakes may be less impacted by subsequent warming. While both stressors drive biotic homogenization, our results have important implications for fisheries managers weighing the costs/benefits of stocking—or removing established non‐native populations—under a rapidly changing climate.

Fish Invasion of Prairie Pothole Wetlands Reduces Amphipod Abundance, A Key Vertebrate Forage

Abstract:Fishes have spread into previously fishless wetlands, likely affecting other species. In the Prairie Pothole Region of North America, the invasion of fish into wetlands is facilitated by interactions of altered land use, climate, and hydrology. We aimed to understand the effects of fishes on amphipods, which are macroinvertebrates that vertebrates rely on as forage. We hypothesized the presence and abundance of fish, particularly benthivores, would have detrimental effects on amphipod abundance. Our study design targeted a large gradient of amphipod abundances among wetlands, including very high abundances of two amphipod species: Gammarus lacustris and Hyalella azteca . We found that fishless basins had twice as many amphipods as those with fish, on average. Gammarus lacustris were not detected in the presence of Black Bullhead Ameiurus melas . The abundance of both amphipod species had negative associations with the most common fishes, Fathead Minnow Pimephales promelas and Brook Stickleback Culaea inconstans . A multivariate community analysis showed the benthivore-fish functional feeding guild was negatively associated with the amphipod community, as hypothesized. However, our study design captured several wetlands with anomalies of high abundances of both fish and amphipods, obscuring their relationships. Our results aid resource managers by confirming several fish guilds and species are associated with lower abundances of amphipods. These findings can inform resource managers who make decisions about managing for fish and wildlife; for example, they may choose to manage existing fish populations or protect existing wetlands with high amphipod densities from new fish invasions.

Contrasting resistance and resilience trajectories of zooplankton communities in restored fishless alpine lakes

Abstract:Catastrophic state changes often occur in ecosystems as consequences of shifts in the dominant life forms, such as in the case of sportfish introduction into naturally fishless mountain lakes. While the pronounced ecological displacement of native communities by these novel predators (i.e., weak resistance) is well documented, few studies have also examined the dynamics of their recovery rates (i.e., "engineering resilience") following stressor removal. We addressed this knowledge gap by quantifying the taxonomic and species trait‐based ordination trajectories of crustacean zooplankton communities in stocked alpine lakes, which differed in how they were restored to a natural fishless state over a period of six decades. Resilience and resistance trajectories differed in each lake as the ecological importance of trait‐based species recolonization potential (e.g., asexual vs. sexual reproduction) replaced that of tolerance of size‐selective predation by fish (e.g., body size, pigmentation, motility). As a result, re‐establishment of large‐bodied zooplankton following the elimination of fish restored annual secondary production. In contrast, a more gradual unidirectional ordination trajectory toward smaller zooplankton body size and a decline in total zooplankton biomass occurred in a nearby alpine lake containing a protected native bull trout population. Although recovery trajectories returned via routes that differed from those of earlier resistance trajectories (i.e., hysteresis), we discovered that full taxonomic and functional recovery was realized in all the restored fishless lakes within three decades, regardless of the approach used to achieve ecosystem restoration.

Abstract:Climate warming has yielded earlier ice break‐up dates in recent decades for lakes leading to water temperature increases, altered habitat, and both increases and decreases to ecosystem productivity. Within lakes, the effect of climate warming on secondary production in littoral and pelagic habitats remains unclear. The intersection of changing habitat productivity and warming water temperatures on salmonids is important for understanding how climate warming will impact mountain ecosystems. We develop and test a conceptual model that expresses how earlier ice break‐up dates influence within lake habitat production, water temperatures, and the habitat utilized by, resources obtained and behavior of salmonids in a mountain lake. We measured zoobenthic and zooplankton production from the littoral and pelagic habitats, thermal conditions, and the habitat use, resource use, and fitness of Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis ). We show that earlier ice break‐up conditions created a "resource rich" littoral benthic habitat with increases in zoobenthic production compared to the pelagic habitat which decreased in zooplankton production. Despite the increases in littoral benthic food resources, trout did not utilize littoral habitat or zoobenthic resources due to longer durations of warm water temperatures in the littoral zone. In addition, 87% of their resources were supported by the pelagic habitat during periods with earlier ice break‐up when pelagic resources were least abundant. The decreased reliance on littoral‐benthic resources during earlier ice break‐up were caused reduced fitness (mean reduction of 12 g) to trout. Our data show that changes to ice break‐up drive multi‐directional results for resource production within lake habitats and increase the duration of warmer water temperatures in food rich littoral habitats. The increased duration of warmer littoral water temperatures reduces the use of energetically efficient habitats culminating in decreased trout fitness.

Abstract:Rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) have been widely introduced outside of their natural range and are one of the World's most invasive species. Illegally introduced into the isolated, high-altitude (4520 m) Chungará catchment of northern Chile, rainbow trout have now been present in the system for ∼30 years and to our knowledge are the World's highest known self-sustaining population. However, nothing is known about the status and impacts of these trout in the system. We analysed stomach contents and stable isotopes (δ 13C, δ 15N, δ 34S) from liver and muscle to study the trophic ecology of rainbow trout from lake, river mouth and riverine habitats in the Chungará catchment to understand their basic ecology and to characterise their potential trophic interactions with native taxa. Both stomach contents and stable isotope values showed spatial differences in diet and habitat use, but also revealed that diet varied temporally within habitats. The trophic position of rainbow trout was similar in the three habitats examined and was constant over time, apart from the riverine population. Predation by rainbow trout had different potential effects across pelagic, benthic, and riverine habitats in the Chungará catchment, through the consumption of zooplankton, native amphipods, aquatic insects, and the endemic cypriniodontid fish Orestias chungarensis.

Abstract:Climate change is increasing the frequency, severity, and extent of wildfires and drought in many parts of the world, with numerous repercussions for the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of streams. However, information on how these perturbations affect top predators and their impacts on lower trophic levels in streams is limited. The top aquatic predator in southern California streams is native Oncorhynchus mykiss, the endangered southern California steelhead trout (trout). To examine relationships among the distribution of trout, environmental factors, and stream invertebrate resources and assemblages, we sampled pools in 25 stream reaches that differed in the presence (nine reaches) or absence (16 reaches) of trout over 12 years, including eight reaches where trout were extirpated during the study period by drought or post‐fire flood disturbances. Trout were present in deep pools with high water and habitat quality. Invertebrate communities in trout pools were dominated by a variety of medium‐sized collector–gatherer and shredder invertebrate taxa with non‐seasonal life cycles, whereas tadpoles and large, predatory invertebrates (Odonata, Coleoptera, Hemiptera [OCH]), often with atmospheric breather traits, were more abundant in troutless than trout pools. Structural equation modelling of the algal‐based food web indicated a trophic cascade from trout to predatory invertebrates to collector–gatherer taxa and weaker direct negative trout effects on grazers; however, both grazers and collector–gatherers also were positively related to macroalgal biomass. Structural equation modelling also suggested that bottom‐up interactions and abiotic factors drove the detritus‐based food web, with shredder abundance being positively related to leaf litter (coarse particulate organic matter) levels, which, in turn, were positively related to canopy cover and negatively related to flow. These results emphasise the context dependency of trout effects on prey communities and of the relative importance of top‐down versus bottom‐up interactions on food webs, contingent on environmental conditions (flow, light, nutrients, disturbances) and the abundances and traits of component taxa. Invertebrate assemblage structure changed from a trout to a troutless configuration within a year or two after trout were lost owing to post‐fire scouring flows or drought. Increases in OCH abundance after trout were lost were much more variable after drought than after fire. The reappearance of trout in one stream resulted in quick, severe reductions in OCH abundance. These results indicate that climate‐change induced disturbances can result in the extirpation of a top predator, with cascading repercussions for stream communities and food webs. This study also emphasises the importance of preserving or restoring refuge habitats, such as deep, shaded, perennial, cool stream pools with high habitat and water quality, to prevent the extirpation of sensitive species and preserve native biodiversity during a time of climate change.

Prolonged low flows and non-native fish operate additively to alter insect emergence in mountain streams

Abstract:Climate-induced flow alteration is subjecting mountain streams to more frequent and severe low-flow periods due to lower snowpack and earlier snowmelt. Yet, anticipating how stream ecosystems respond to prolonged low flows remains challenging because trophic levels can respond differently, and non-native predators could dampen or amplify responses. Here, we conducted a large-scale experiment to examine how early, prolonged low flows projected by the end of the century in California's Sierra Nevada will alter mountain stream food webs and emerging insect flux--a critical stream-to-land cross-ecosystem linkage. Additionally, we tested whether Brown trout (Salmo trutta), a widespread non-native top predator, would change food-web responses to low-flow conditions. We found that early low flows and non-native fish effects were additive rather than synergistic or antagonistic. Early low flows did not alter the overall rate of emerging insects but they did shift community structure and reduce the prevalence of small-sized individuals--possibly reflecting larger size at emergence and faster growth rates due to warming. In contrast, non-native fish presence increased seasonally-aggregated abundance of stream insects up to 12%, mainly by increasing abundance of Chironomidae and small-sized Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera. In channels with fish, benthic algal biomass doubled and scraper-grazer and collector-gatherer insects emerged 60% and 55% more than channels without fish, likely benefiting from trout keeping mesopredators at bay. This experiment illustrates that prolonged low flows and invasions can profoundly alter mountain river food webs even when operating additively; and shows how mesocosm-based research may help understand global-change driven disruption of cross-ecosystem linkages.

Fine-scale predation risk on elk after wolf reintroduction in Yellowstone National Park, USA

Abstract:While patterns from trophic cascade studies have largely focused on density-mediated effects of predators on prey, there is increasing recognition that behaviorally mediated indirect effects of predators on prey can, at least in part, explain trophic cascade patterns. To determine if a relationship exists between predation risk perceived by elk (Cervus elaphus) while browsing and elk position within the landscape, we observed a total of 56 female elk during two summers and 29 female elk during one winter. At a fine spatial (0-187 m) and temporal scale (145-300 s), results from our model selection indicated summer vigilance levels were greater for females with calves than for females without calves, with vigilance levels greater for all females at closer escape-impediment distances. Winter results also suggested greater female vigilance levels at closer escape-impediment distances, but further indicated an increase in vigilance levels with closer conifer-edge distances. Placed within the context of other studies, the results were consistent with a behaviorally mediated trophic cascade and provide a potential mechanism to explain the variability in observed woody plant release from browsing in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA.

Abstract:We investigated the effects of geothermally influenced waters on the distribution of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and brown trout, Salmo trutta, in the Firehole River and its tributaries in Yellowstone National Park (WY, USA) from June 1997 to June 1998. Geothermal features in the Firehole River basin elevate mineral content and temperature in portions of the river and its tributaries. We found concentrations of boron and arsenic to be elevated in geothermally influenced areas compared with upstream sites. Boron concentrations occasionally exceeded 1,000 microg/L, a proposed limit for the protection of aquatic organisms. Arsenic concentrations occasionally exceeded 190 microg/L, the chronic ambient water quality criterion. Temperatures in geothermally influenced sites ranged up to 30 degrees C and were consistently 5 to 10 degrees C higher than upstream sites unaffected by geothermal inputs. Rainbow trout occurred at sites with elevated concentrations of boron, arsenic, and other trace elements and elevated water temperatures. Rainbow trout inhabited and spawned at sites with the most elevated trace element concentrations and temperatures; however, brown trout were absent from these sites. Water temperature may be the major factor determining brown trout distributions, but we cannot exclude the possibility that brown trout are more sensitive than rainbow trout to boron, arsenic, or other trace elements. Further investigations are needed to determine species-specific tolerances of boron, arsenic, and other trace elements among salmonids.

Long-term impact of an invasive predator on the diversity of fish assemblages in a neotropical reservoir

Abstract:The invasion of predators can result in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic losses in the structure of fish fauna causing ecological damage in the invaded area. We tested the hypothesis that the invasion of the silver croaker ( Plagioscion squamosissimus ) altered the structure of fish assemblages in a Neotropical reservoir. Using data from long-term fisheries of the Jaguari Reservoir, Brazil, we calculated taxonomic (richness, evenness and beta diversity), functional (richness, evenness and beta diversity) and phylogenetic (richness, dispersion and beta diversity) metrics of diversity of fish assemblages per year and correlated them with the abundance of the invasive fish. We found that the invasion of P . squamosissimus affected all three facets of diversity. Alpha diversity decreased after the invasion, while beta diversity (both taxonomic and functional) and phylogenetic dispersion increased as P. squamosissimus abundance increased. Plagioscion squamosissimus was successful in the invasion process and became the most abundant predator in the reservoir few years after the first record. The generalist reproductive and feeding strategies of this predator, and the distant phylogenetic relationship with the local ichthyofauna may have facilitated its success. As a top predator in the food network, the invader likely interacted with the community mainly through predation and competition, thereby reshaping the fish community structure. We conclude that the P. squamosissimus invasion negatively affected the local biodiversity by detrimental changes to its taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic structure.

Abstract:Summary Young-of-year (YOY) fishes are sometimes numerically dominant vertebrate consumers in many large river systems, but their effects as predators are not as well understood as those of adult fishes. We predicted that YOY fishes influence community composition and abundance of invertebrate prey. Predation effects could be especially important in recruitment-driven dryland river systems, where YOY fishes seasonally comprise a large portion of overall fish biomass. We conducted a mesocosm experiment to quantify effects of YOY fishes on trophic dynamics and interactions with environmental factors in a dryland river food web. We manipulated presence of YOY fishes (an assemblage of cypriniform species) and supplemental allochthonous carbon (LEAF treatments) in 24 mesocosms, and measured invertebrate abundance and diversity over 6 weeks. Experimental conditions mimicked a seasonal river drying regime that occurs during YOY fish growth. Seasonal drying in the Rio Grande frequently results in isolated pools with altered habitat complexity and riparian connectivity. Fishes exerted direct top-down control of invertebrate assemblage composition through differential prey selection, and indirect control mediated by non-lethal responses of invertebrates to predatory fishes. We observed enhanced water clarity in LEAF treatments associated with greater prey selectivity in fishes, presumably through enhanced visual feeding. Stable isotope analysis (C and N) was used to measure indirect impacts of YOY fishes on invertebrate prey items. YOY fishes caused a significant decrease in “isotopic niche breadth” among invertebrate taxa, suggesting that fish predators limit foraging opportunities for these consumers. However, allochthonous carbon sources were predominant in invertebrate diets in all LEAF treatments, suggesting consumer access to more biologically available autochthonous production is limited by factors other than fish predation. Although the roles of abiotic drivers and adult fishes in determining food web structure have received more attention, our results indicate that YOY fishes exert biologically relevant top-down control of invertebrate assemblage composition and trophic complexity in dryland river ecosystems against a backdrop of substantial changes in carbon availability and abiotic conditions (e.g. water quality and habitat volume) over the growing season.

Predator presence influences survival and behavior of translocated stream fish in ponds

Abstract:Abstract Small artificial impoundments such as farm ponds have recently been recognized as potential habitat for threatened native fish species. However, factors influencing translocation or colonization success into these environments, including connectivity to stream networks and interactions with existing fish community, are largely unknown. In this study we conducted a controlled experiment to quantify the influence of piscivorous Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides on the survival of a translocated native minnow species that we used as a surrogate for federally endangered Topeka Shiner Notropis topeka. We translocated or released 100 Bluntnose Minnow Pimephales notatus into each replicate treatment ponds with and without Largemouth Bass in the summers of 2020 and 2021. Each minnow was implanted with a passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag. Translocated populations were monitored using stationary and mobile passive integrated transponder antennas and estimates of apparent survival and probability of detection for each pond were derived from open population mark-recapture models. Apparent survival was nearly two times higher in ponds without bass suggesting predation by bass leads to higher mortality. Additionally, probability of detection was nearly 10 times higher in ponds without bass, suggesting reduced movement of translocated minnows when bass were present. While the direct effect of mortality impacts translocated populations, the indirect effect of altered behavior may also be impactful on translocation success. These results confirm that Largemouth Bass can limit the success of translocated minnow species.

Abstract:In a global context of invasive alien species (IAS), native predators are often eradicated by functionally different IAS, which may induce complex cascading consequences on ecosystem functioning because of the key role predators play in structuring communities and stabilizing food webs. In permanent ponds, the most abundant freshwater systems on Earth, global human-mediated introductions of alien omnivores such as the pet trade goldfish are driving broad-scale patterns of native predators' exclusion, but cascading consequences on food web structure and functioning are critically understudied. We compared food webs of naturally fishless ponds versus ponds where dominant native predators (newts) had been extirpated by invasive goldfish within the last decade. Integrating community-wide isotopic, taxonomic and functional traits approaches, our study reveals that pond food webs collapsed in both vertical and horizontal dimensions following goldfish introduction and the associated exclusion of native predators. Consumer taxonomic diversity was drastically reduced, essentially deprived of amphibians as well as predatory and mobile macroinvertebrates to the profit of burrowing, lower trophic level consumers (detritivores). Changes in community structure and function underlined a regime shift from a macrophyte-dominated system mainly characterized by benthic primary production (periphyton), to a macrophyte-depleted state of ponds hosting communities mainly associated with phytoplankton primary production and detritus accumulation, with higher tolerance to eutrophication and low dissolved oxygen concentration. Results underline major impacts of widely introduced omnivores such as the goldfish on the functioning of pond ecosystems with potentially dramatic consequences on the key ecosystem services they deliver, such as global biodiversity support or water quality improvement. They also shed light on the key role of submerged aquatic vegetation in supporting diverse communities and complex food webs in shallow lentic systems and call for urgent consideration of threats posed by IAS on ponds' ecosystems by managers and policymakers.

Abstract:Climate‐induced expansion of invasive hybridization (breeding between invasive and native species) poses a significant threat to the persistence of many native species worldwide. In the northern U.S. Rocky Mountains, hybridization between native cutthroat trout and non‐native rainbow trout has increased in recent decades due, in part, to climate‐driven increases in water temperature. It has been postulated that invasive hybridization may enhance physiological tolerance to climate‐induced thermal stress because laboratory studies indicate that rainbow trout have a higher thermal tolerance than cutthroat trout. Here, we assessed whether invasive hybridization improves cardiac performance response to acute water temperature stress of native wild trout populations. We collected trout from four streams with a wide range of non‐native admixture among individuals and with different temperature and streamflow regimes in the upper Flathead River drainage, USA. We measured individual cardiac performance (maximum heart rate, "MaxHR", and temperature at arrhythmia, "ArrTemp") during laboratory trials with increasing water temperatures (10–28°C). Across the study populations, we observed substantial variation in cardiac performance of individual trout when exposed to thermal stress. Notably, we found significant differences in the cardiac response to thermal regimes among native cutthroat trout populations, suggesting the importance of genotype‐by‐environment interactions in shaping the physiological performance of native cutthroat trout. However, rainbow trout admixture had no significant effect on cardiac performance (MaxHR and ArrTemp) within any of the three populations. Our results indicate that invasive hybridization with a warmer‐adapted species does not enhance the cardiac performance of native trout under warming conditions. Maintaining numerous populations across thermally and hydrologically diverse stream environments will be crucial for native trout to adapt and persist in a warming climate.

Abstract:Dams fragment streams, alter hydrology and habitat, and facilitate establishment of nonnative species worldwide to the detriment of native biota. Understanding and mitigating these effects to conserve and restore stream fish assemblages has relied on short‐ and long‐term datasets to assess acute and chronic change through time, craft management strategies, and measure remediation success. We used sampling records collected over a 29‐year period (1993–2021) to examine likely causes of fish assemblage change in the Cache la Poudre River, Colorado, USA. Numerous low‐head dams have reduced connectivity and altered flow, temperature, and habitat in the transition zone, a reach that historically supported rare and sensitive taxa valuable to regional biodiversity. We found diversity, distribution, and abundance of native species declined since the early 1990s, with formerly rare taxa extirpated and some common species becoming rare. Native taxa remained numerically dominant in warmer downstream reaches most affected by streamflow diversion but were incrementally reduced in richness and abundance upstream of low‐head dams without fishways. Concurrently, nonnative Brown Trout Salmo trutta increased in distribution and abundance, dominating upstream reaches that receive cooler and more stable flows, and expanding into downstream reaches where they were formerly absent, with likely negative consequences for native fishes. In the absence of mitigation, these collective effects, plus recent wildfire disturbance and future water development, will continue to degrade stream fish assemblages in our study area, and worldwide, where resource managers face the often‐competing interests of conserving native species, providing recreational fisheries, and meeting increasing water demands.

Abstract:Native Bluegill Sunfish had important competitive impacts on invasive Western Mosquitofish and also had intraguild predation effects that prevented successful recruitment of Western Mosquitofish. In contrast, Bluegill Sunfish were affected by intraspecific effects more than by interspecific effects from Western Mosquitofish. Our results suggest that native Bluegill Sunfish might provide a degree of biotic resistance to invasion by Western Mosquitofish in small temperate ponds. Aquatic ecosystems are often negatively affected by invasive species. However, biotic resistance by native species, either by competition or predation, can reduce the impacts of invasions by non‐native species. The Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) is one of the most impactful invasive species of freshwater fish and cause declines in native fish populations. Using two mesocosm experiments conducted in different years, we examined the ecological interactions between juveniles of the native fish, Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), and adults of the invasive fish, G. affinis. We found evidence for interactions between L. macrochirus and G. affinis. However, interactions did not appear symmetric, with L. macrochirus generally more affected by intraspecific interactions than interspecific interactions whereas G. affinis was more affected by interspecific interactions than intraspecific interactions. The presence of either species of fish led to a decrease in the number of large zooplankton and a tendency for a decrease in the total number of zooplankton. Based on these results, native L. macrochirus appear to be able to reduce the ability of non‐native G. affinis to establish or maintain populations through both competition and predation (i.e., acting as an intraguild predator). The consistency of our results across both experiments, with their different designs and their occurring in different years, gives weight to these conclusions. The reduction of or prevention of establishment of populations of invasive G. affinis would likely benefit the aquatic communities of ponds with fish, especially small‐bodied native fish.
