Abstract:Much of the existing research on employee engagement is deficient in examining organizational actors' lived experiences of organizational engagement activities. This article, deriving from qualitative research in a public–private partnership organization, contributes to the current understanding of how employee engagement is generated through management communication activities seeking to promote engagement and employees' responses thereto. Also drawing on the literatures on organizational change, communication and culture, our research demonstrates that: (1) managers use both directive and discursive means of communication to create an environment in which employees may wish to engage; and (2) employees respond positively to such communication as it makes them feel valued and involved, which enhances their propensity to engage with the organization. However, contrary to widespread assumptions in the literature, the generation of employee engagement is far from straightforward; employees have an active role to participate in the engagement activities offered by managers.

Abstract:This article examines the evolving concept of power in the rhetorical assumptions warranting US public diplomacy and strategic communication as evidenced in contemporary policy discourse. The shift toward ‘engagement’ across US institutions responsible for international communication increasingly reflects some awareness of how crucial audiences for public diplomacy are organized in relation to the media they consume, and how audiences are connected as networks. These developments may necessitate wholly different forms of persuasive discourse that account for the network context of influence in public diplomacy. The rhetoric of a mediated public diplomacy would account for the changing ecology of international communication, and likewise reflect different conceptions of what is strategically possible: how public diplomacy can accommodate or manage foreign policy objectives.

Abstract:The global upheaval caused by events in 2020 and beyond – from navigating a pandemic to an American reckoning with long-standing issues of race and inequality – has placed the public voice front and center. Public discourse now plays an essential role in shaping organizational policy and practice. This article posits that in response, public relations must take a "next turn" theoretically in a way that prioritizes the public voice. As such, guided by the perspectives of LGBTQIA advocacy leaders in the post-Obergefell (post-marriage-equality) era, this article argues that the field must shift from a focus on relationship management to one on change empowerment. In so doing, it contends that if we are going to truly take a next turn to focus on the public in this post-2020 context, then theoretically we must better-address the influence and process of change – emanating from internal and external forces. This article also contends that while public relations certainly remains a management function, the lessons from 2020 mandate that we question our field's focus on "managing" relationships and instead investigate how public relations can become a source of empowerment.

Abstract:This symposium presents cutting-edge research on citizenship behavior. The existing literature has suggested that citizenship behavior is an important and complicated phenomenon that is not fully understood. To reconcile the conflicting views in on-going investigations of this phenomenon, this symposium presents five studies that examine how employees at different organizational levels perceive citizenship behavior and how they enact and react to such behavior. Abstract:Organizational Psychology Review, Volume 14, Issue 2, Page 360-369, May 2024. Where has our reach and impact gone? As behavioral scientists, it is incumbent upon us to extend the reach of our work. Doing so is never easy unless you follow a few approaches. This manuscript underscores the imperative for behavioral scientists to communicate their research findings beyond traditional academic confines, targeting non-scientific audiences. We outline strategic steps that scholars can adopt to enhance the visibility, accessibility, and impact of their research. These include (1) translating scientific jargon into comprehensible language; (2) leveraging digital platforms like blogs, podcasts, and social media; (3) collaborating with media professionals for broader outreach; (4) engaging in public talks and community forums; and (5) developing buy-in from the audiences needed for organizational success. Implementing these strategies not only reinforces the societal relevance of social behavioral science, but also fosters a more informed and engaged public, bridging the gap between academia and the broader community.Plain language summary (latham & alonso)Too often behavioral scientists find themselves languishing in navel-gazing postures because of our incentivization systems. We, behavioral scientists, are rewarded for publishing in peer-reviewed journals where we communicate with one another in the most abstruse jargon imaginable. It comes as no surprise then that we seldom find ourselves translating theory into applied work and, even more seldom, making an impact on real-world problems.While we find ourselves in low-impact, high navel-gazing situations often, there are several things we can do to take application to theory and, vice versa, enhance theory into applied settings. Throughout this manuscript, Latham and Alonso provide a thorough examination of how behavioral scientists can develop partnerships with stakeholder groups. Further, they examine how learning programs can adapt to build partnership skillsets among behavioral scientists. Finally, they apply their findings to an example involving the application of theory around interactive justice.

Abstract:This article tests the links between attributes of stakeholder engagement (information sharing [quantity and quality of information sharing], procedural fairness [respectful treatment and providing voice], and empathy) and local communities’ acceptance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives with the mediating roles of trust and perceived environmental protection. Using Ghana as a case, survey data were collected from 604 local inhabitants in mining communities for the study. In analyzing data with a structural equation modeling technique via IBM SPSS AMOS Version 22.0, the quality of information shared, respectful treatment, giving voice to and showing empathy to local inhabitants positively related with trust. Trust and perceived environmental protection partially mediated the relationships between attributes of stakeholder engagement and acceptance of CSR. The findings show different dimensions with different extent to which trust between mining firms and local communities can resolve conflicts on CSR initiatives as well as provide guidelines for healthy communication between stakeholders.

Rethinking Public Diplomacy in the 2020s

Abstract:The author and co-editor of the second edition of the Routledge Handbook of Public Diplomacy examines public diplomacy’s growth in the twenty-first century and what place its scholarship and practice has in the social sciences. The interactive dimension of diplomacy needs acceptance among what she calls the “big dogs” in political science and international relations, who tend to sideline the field as a persuasion tactic and theory deprived. While there is some truth in that criticism, public diplomacy must have a seat at the policy table in order to stretch the dialogue, offer building mutual understanding strategies, and contribute to a toolkit of nonviolent options of action.

Abstract:abstract Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an increasingly pervasive phenomenon on the European and North American economic and political landscape. In this paper, we extend neo‐institutional and stakeholder theory to show how differences in the institutional environments of Europe and the United States affect expectations about corporate responsibilities to society. We focus on how these differences are manifested in government policy, corporate strategy, and non‐governmental organization (NGO) activism towards specific issues involving the social responsibilities of corporations. Drawing from recent theoretical and empirical research, and analysis of three case studies (global warming, trade in genetically modified organisms, and pricing of anti‐viral pharmaceuticals in developing countries), we find that different institutional structures and political legacies in the US and EU are important factors in explaining how governments, NGOs, and the broader polity determine and implement preferences regarding CSR in these two important world regions.

Abstract:This article builds on earlier conceptual analyses that have contrasted public relations with diplomacy and public diplomacy at conceptual and applied levels, to consider further the theoretical and global issues of public relations’ diplomatic work for states and organizations in the context of globalization. A key feature of such work is its intercultural nature, at the organizational, ethnic, and state levels. The discussion draws inspiration from a range of disciplines including public relations, international relations, strategic studies, media studies, peace studies, management studies, cultural studies, and anthropology. Linking public diplomacy to public relations usefully reconnects public relations to power, which has largely been ignored by dominant organizational-management approaches to the subject.

Abstract:Public Relations concepts and practice in different democracies vary according to the nature of their political, cultural, social, and the level of technological orientation or advancement. With the digital age and the increasing trend in globalization, Global or Multinational Corporations have both challenges and opportunities towards meeting their business goals as to win hearts and minds of customers/publics in a diverse environment. Public Relations in Digital Age: Localising Global Corporations Activities and Social Media Uses in Tanzania, using Standard Chartered Bank, Coca Cola Company, and Barrick (Acacia) Mines, as case, has investigated the activities done by the Corporations, social media engagement, Corporate Social Responsibility activities and comparing local and global activities of the Corporations. The three Corporations’ profiles were surveyed to grasp their natures - activities and new media uses while a three- year content analysis was done through Corporations’ social networking sites (SNS) – Facebook, Twitter and You Tube to understand their uses of SNS in enhancing their roles through Public Relations. The findings show that despite their differences in nature, they all use their global business experiences in dealing with local activities. They have been responding to silent calls for glocalisation by identifying the basic needs of their customers/publics, for example, localizing the brand (Coca Cola to Coca Cola Kwanza), changing the brand name altogether (Barrick to Acacia), as well as stretching their Corporate Social Responsibility activities in health, education, environment and sports and entertainment while strengthening their ties with the government by not only responding to legal obligations like paying taxes but also supporting communication and health sectors. However, more glocalisation process is still in need as compared to what has been done in other countries in responding to cultural-centric and polycentric PR approaches. Moreover, the MNCs use both asymmetric and symmetric communication through Facebook, Twitter and You Tube. Twitter has been the mostly used SN especially in a symmetrical communication followed by Facebook. It has been also observed that the sensitivity of Corporation’s activities increases the engagement in CSR activities. Since, the area has not been extensively researched, the researcher calls for more studies on glocalisation of MNCs and new media uses in developing countries and Tanzania in particular in attempt to exploit the potentials of Public Relations.
Public diplomacy and public relations: Will the twain ever meet

Abstract:The integrated model of public diplomacy, which is introduced in this book, employs a strategic communication approach that constitutes a merging of public relations practice and techniques with public diplomacy goals and outcomes. One of the three layers of the integrated model, mediated public diplomacy, implores governments to engage foreign publics through third party mediators such as global media (global satellite networks, international broadcasting) and international social media influencers. The mediated public diplomacy layer is a recognition of 21st century realities for public diplomacy: namely, that the whole world is watching what governments say and do and not only writing and reporting on their talk and actions, but also utilizing the opinions and evaluations of those third party influencers like bloggers and digital activists who are talking back at their governments like never before. The other two layers, nation branding/country reputation and relational public diplomacy, inclusively medium and long-term strategies, position public relations perspectives and practitioners at the forefront of implementing effective public diplomacy outcomes. The majority of contributors to this volume, including the editors who introduce the integrated model of public diplomacy, argue that public relations should lead, and not follow, in public diplomacy research and applications. Abstract:Language matters in shaping perceptions and guiding behaviour. The term stakeholder is widely used, yet little attention is paid to the possibility that its use may inadvertently perpetuate colonial narratives and reinforce systemic inequities. In this article, we critically examine the limitations of the stakeholder concept and its ambiguity, normativity, and exclusionary implications. We emphasise the importance of using language that gives a voice to marginalised groups, promotes inclusion and equity, and fosters meaningful and reflexive participation in decision-making processes. In critiquing the use of the term and calling for alternative practices, we aim to contribute to the decolonisation of research norms and the creation of more inclusive and equitable societies. Therefore, rather than advocating a single alternative term, we suggest a focus on the people, places, and species affected by decisions, interventions, projects, and issues.

The public as a definitive stakeholder of corporate environmental sustainability practices: A cross-national institutional approach

Abstract:An emerging body of literature connects the well-known Varieties of Capitalism framework (and its variants) with the propensity of nations to move away from hydrocarbons. Our study extends this work by exploring how macro-level institutional configurations matter for public expectations towards corporate environmental sustainability practices. By linking survey data of public-as-stakeholders to institutional systems encompassing 16 countries (N = 7156), we use multi-level modelling to test the explanatory power of a theoretically well-refined recent construct, namely, the Varieties of Institutional Systems - and discover significant variations associated with public expectations across different institutional systems. The findings, however, defy the notion of a clear distinction between mature and emerging markets or that mature institutional systems consistently hold firms to higher environmental standards. Rather surprisingly and counter-intuitively, we find that public-as-stakeholders from State-Led institutional systems had the highest expectations towards corporate environmental sustainability practices. We outline some of the major theoretical and policy implications of our research findings.

Abstract:This study investigates the internal ideational foundation underlying the host country public relations of multinational corporations by explicating the thinking of various public relations actors about what counts as good public relations work. It uses an abductive approach that combines theoretical deduction and qualitative induction. Data were collected through ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the subsidiary of an American multinational in China. Interpretation of the data reveals a global localism-informed orientation reflected in the views of expatriate managers, and a local pragmatism-rooted orientation in the perceptions of other public relations actors hired from the host country.
Stakeholders' Responses to CSR Tradeoffs: When Other-Orientation and Trust Trump Material Self-Interest

Abstract:When investing in corporate social responsibility (CSR), managers may strive for a win-win scenario where all stakeholders end up better off, but they may not always be able to avoid trading off stakeholders' interests. To provide guidance to managers who have to make tradeoffs, this study used a vignette-based experiment to explore stakeholders' intention to associate with a firm (i.e., buy from or become an employee) that trades off CSR directed at the stakeholders' own group (self-directed CSR) and CSR directed at another stakeholder group (other-directed CSR). Results show that stakeholders were not systematically more attracted to a firm that favors their own group over another stakeholder group. Specifically, stakeholders' other-orientation moderated their reaction to tradeoffs: stakeholders higher on other-orientation were willing to forego some material benefits to associate with a firm that treated suppliers in developing countries significantly better than its competitors, whereas stakeholders lower on other-orientation were more attracted to a firm favoring their own stakeholder group. Other-orientation also moderated reactions to tradeoffs involving the environment, although high CSR directed at the environment did not compensate for low self-directed CSR even for stakeholders higher on other-orientation. Second, the vignette study showed that trust mediated the relationship between tradeoffs and stakeholders' reactions. The study contributes first and foremost to the burgeoning literature on CSR tradeoffs and to the multimotive approach to CSR, which claims that other motives can drive stakeholders' reactions to CSR in addition to self-interest. First, it provides further evidence that studying CSR tradeoffs is important to understand both (prospective) employees' and customers' reactions to CSR-related activities. Second, it identifies other-orientation as a motive-related individual difference that explains heterogeneity in stakeholders' reactions to CSR. These findings suggest several avenues for future research for organizational psychologists interested in organizational justice. Third, it investigates trust as a mediating mechanism. Fourth, it reveals differences in stakeholders' reactions depending on which other stakeholder group is involved in the tradeoff. For practice, the findings suggest that tradeoffs are important because they influence which stakeholders are attracted to the firm.

Abstract:This article describes and evaluates the different strategies that have been employed by international human rights nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in attempting to influence the behavior of multinational corporations (MNCs). Within the NGO world, there is a basic divide on tactics for dealing with corporations: Engagers try to draw corporations into dialogue in order to persuade them by means of ethical and prudential arguments to adopt voluntary codes of conduct, while confronters believe that corporations will act only when their financial interests are threatened, and therefore take a more adversarial stance toward them. Confrontational NGOs tend to employ moral stigmatization, or “naming and shaming,” as their primary tactic, while NGOs that favor engagement offer dialogue and limited forms of cooperation with willing MNCs. The article explains the evolving relationship between NGOs and MNCs in relation to human rights issues and defines eight strategies along the engagement/confrontation spectrum used by NGOs in their dealings with MNCs. The potential benefits and risks of various forms of engagement between NGOs and MNCs are analyzed and it is argued that the dynamic created by NGOs pursuing these different strategies can be productive in moving some companies to embrace their social responsibilities. Yet, in order for these changes to be sustainable, national governments will need to enact enforceable international legal standards for corporate social accountability.

Abstract:The underlying assumption is that a gradual change in economic and financial power will also lead to changes in ‘soft power’ like media communication, public relations, public opinion, public diplomacy and (new and old) media consumption. In other words, culture and mass communication play a significant role in shaping the dialogue between organizations and publics in different countries in general, and between the US and China in particular.New ways to conceptualize and study Public Relations and News, Public Diplomacy, International Communication, and Crisis Communication are being introduced.
