Abstract:In this brief, a disturbance observer based prescribed-time tracking control strategy is proposed for a class of high-order nonlinear systems with non-vanishing uncertainties. A finite time function is firstly introduced to facilitate the disturbance observer and controller design. Then, a prescribed-time disturbance observer is constructed to estimate and compensate for the non-vanishing uncertainties, which ensures that the estimation error converges to zero in a prescribed time. Based on the backstepping design framework, the prescribed-time controller is further designed in the form of scaling the tracking error. Theoretical analysis reveals that the proposed controller achieves the excellent prescribed-time convergence of the full state tracking errors, and the convergence time can be explicitly predetermined, independent of the initial conditions. Finally, the validity and superiority of the proposed controller is demonstrated via numerical simulation.

Operational Optimal Tracking Control for Industrial Multirate Systems Subject to Unknown Disturbances

Abstract:It is well common for industrial processes to employ a hierarchical control structure involving a basic loop process and an operation loop process with two timescales. However, the control system suffers from another multirate challenge where control and sampling rates may differ even within a single loop. Additionally, the underlying complex mechanism of the operation loop further complicates the accurate modeling of its dynamics, especially in the presence of external unknown disturbances. This gives rise to the difficulty in obtaining desired control performance. To overcome these problems, this article develops a novel operational optimal tracking control method for a class of multirate systems subject to unknown disturbances. To this end, a lifting technique is integrated with a general model predictive controller for the basic loop process, aimed at handling the asynchronism phenomenon and achieving loop setpoint tracking control. Furthermore, a nonlinear disturbance observer is used for estimating the unknown external disturbance of the operation loop process. In this way, offset-free tracking control of the system, along with loop setpoints optimization, can be achieved using the policy iteration reinforcement learning algorithm. The convergence of the proposed method is analyzed and tangible improvements are verified by simulations.

Abstract:This paper addresses the prescribed performance tracking control problem for a class of nonlinear systems subject to mismatched uncertainties. A novel disturbance observer-based control (DOBC) scheme is proposed through combining radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) and prescribed performance function (PPF). In contrast to traditional DOBC, the proposed approach employs RBFNN technology to approximate unknown nonlinear functions in the system, instead of treating them as part of lumped disturbances. A novel disturbance observer is developed to estimate disturbances characterised by a nonlinear exogenous system. To enhance control performance, a PPF that characterises both transient and steady-state behaviour is used for the transformation of tracking errors. It can be proved that all the states of the closed-loop system can be guaranteed to be uniformly ultimately bounded (UUB), and that the tracking error evolves within the prespecified boundaries. Theoretical results are validated and supported by two simulation examples.

Abstract:This paper focuses on optimal mismatched disturbance rejection control for linear continuoustime uncontrollable systems. Different from previous studies, by introducing a new quadratic performance index to transform the mismatched disturbance rejection control into a linear quadratic tracking problem, the regulated state can track a reference trajectory and minimize the influence of disturbance. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability and the disturbance rejection controller are obtained by solving a forward-backward differential equation over a finite horizon. A sufficient condition for system stability is obtained over an infinite horizon under detectable condition. This paper details our novel approach for transforming disturbance rejection into a linear quadratic tracking problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is provided with two examples to demonstrate.

Abstract:A disturbance rejection approach based on disturbance observer is proposed for a class of nonlinear systems subject to mismatched disturbances. The mismatched disturbances are described by exogenous systems and satisfy partially-known information, which enter the system in the different channels with the control input. The disturbance observer is designed to estimate the mismatched disturbances, which can be introduced separately from the controller design. By integrating disturbance observer with back-stepping method, the disturbance observer plus back-stepping (DOPBS) controller can be constructed to reject the mismatched disturbances. And the asymptotically stability for the closed-loop system can be achieved. Finally, simulation examples are given to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme compared with existing methods.

Abstract:Anti-disturbance control problem is studied for a class of nonlinear strict-feedback systems with disturbances. The system disturbances satisfy mismatched condition and represent a class of disturbances with partially-known information. By designing a nonlinear disturbance observer, the nonlinear disturbance observer plus back-stepping(NDOPBS) control strategy is proposed to compensate the disturbances. It is proved that all the signals in the closed-loop system are semi-global uniformly ultimate bounded(SGUUB). Finally, the numerical simulation result demonstrates the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed approach by the comparison with existing methods.

Abstract:This study focuses on the problem of optimal mismatched disturbance rejection control for uncontrollable linear discrete-time systems. In contrast to previous studies, by introducing a quadratic performance index such that the regulated state can track a reference trajectory and minimize the effects of disturbances, mismatched disturbance rejection control is transformed into a linear quadratic tracking problem. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of this problem over a finite horizon and a disturbance rejection controller are derived by solving a forward–backward difference equation. In the case of an infinite horizon, a sufficient condition for the stabilization of the system is obtained under the detectable condition. Additionally, in combination with the generalized extended state observer, a controller design method is proposed, and the stability analysis of the system under this controller is presented. This paper details our novel approach to disturbance rejection. Finally, four examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel adaptive control strategy is presented for the tracking control of a class of multi-input-multioutput uncertain nonlinear systems with external disturbances to place user-defined time-varying constraints on the system state. Our contribution includes a step forward beyond the usual stabilization result to show that the states of the plant converge asymptotically, as well as remain within user-defined time-varying bounds. To achieve the new results, an error transformation technique is first established to generate an equivalent nonlinear system from the original one, whose asymptotic stability guarantees both the satisfaction of the time-varying restrictions and the asymptotic tracking performance of the original system. The uncertainties of the transformed system are overcome by an online neural network (NN) approximator, while the external disturbances and NN reconstruction error are compensated by the robust integral of the sign of the error signal. Via standard Lyapunov method, asymptotic tracking performance is theoretically guaranteed, and all the closed-loop signals are bounded. The requirement for a prior knowledge of bounds of uncertain terms is relaxed. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the merits of the proposed controller.

Abstract:This article studies the disturbance observer-based adaptive fuzzy finite-time control issue of strict-feedback nonlinear systems. Specifically, to meet practical application requirement, the finite-time prescribed performance is considered, which can guarantee the tracking error enters into the prescribed bounded set in a known time. A disturbance observer is proposed to estimate the external disturbance. It is proved that the closed-loop system is semi-globally practically finite-time stable. Finally, simulation studies for a one-link manipulator are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:By introducing a set of exact disturbance estimators, a continuously tracking controller for a class of mismatched uncertain systems with exogenous disturbances will be proposed. The most appealing superiority is that the proposed exact disturbance estimators can not only estimate the external disturbances but also achieve an asymptotic estimation performance. Furthermore, with the help of a set of first-order asymptotic filters and an auxiliary system, the developed control algorithm is able to compensate for these total disturbances feedforwardly. Consequently, the whole closed-loop stability with an asymptotic tracking performance is strictly analyzed, and meanwhile applications are conducted to indicate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Abstract:Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. This paper investigates the finite-time disturbance estimation and tracking control for robotic manipulators subjected to model perturbation and external disturbance. First, an adaptive sliding mode disturbance observer (ASMDO) is raised to estimate the lumped uncertainties, which does not need to consider the upper boundary prior knowledge of lumped uncertainties' derivative, and excessive gain coefficients are avoided, meanwhile, which decrease the chattering phenomenon. Next, a finite-time prescribed performance control (FPPC) is established to guarantee the system converges within a finite time and promote transient performance. Then, together with the FPPC, a finite-time nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode variable is established, which handles singularity problem in terminal sliding mode. In the meantime, a finite-time adaptive nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode controller (FANFTSMC) is constructed based on ASMDO and FPPC. The Lyapunov theorem is given to clarify that the system can reach the stable state within a finite time. Theoretical analysis and experiments reveal that FANFTSMC has better tracking performance and stronger robustness.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the trajectory tracking control for general nonlinear single-input single-output (SISO) systems in which the output is not directly related to the control input. To address the tracking problem with the consideration of possible model uncertainty, external disturbance, and control input saturation, we employ the input-output feedback linearization technique and design a finite-time disturbance observer-based terminal sliding mode controller to improve the tracking performance and enhance the robustness. The stability analysis is carried out by using the Lyapunov method. To alleviate the chattering while achieving an acceptable control performance, a boundary layer method is adopted for the trade-off between the high-frequency control actions and the bounded unavoidable nonzero steady-state error. The proposed method is evaluated on the two typical nonlinear systems, which are fully linearizable and partially linearizable, respectively, and compared to the state-of-the-art method in terms of tracking and robustness through comprehensive numerical simulations. The results show that the proposed method not only renders the estimated disturbance error tends to be zero in finite time, but also has superiority in the fast reaction to disturbance and small tracking error without high-frequency chattering.

Abstract:SummaryThe problem of practical predefined‐time tracking control is con sidered for high‐order strict‐feedback nonlinear systems subject to unknown mismatched disturbances. The exact bound of the mismatched disturbances is unknown in this study. A novel adaptive predefined‐time tracking control strategy based on backstepping is proposed by applying a predefined time stability theory. Using the designed tracking controller, all signals are bounded, and a user‐defined bound on the tracking error is ensured in a predefined interval, independent of initial states. The estimation parameters associated with the upper bound of the disturbances are updated adaptively, making the system robust to the disturbances. Simulation studies are conducted to illustrate the performance of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:A new elegant anti-disturbance control and estimation strategy is presented for a class of nonlinear systems subject to multiple disturbances. As a class of strong-coupled nonlinear systems, the models have measurement error, friction, varying load, and unmodelled dynamics, which can be characterized as two types of disturbances in this framework. One is supposed to be generated by an exogenous system with uncertainty, which represents the disturbance with partial known information. The other is a bounded external disturbance in the H-2-norm. The nonlinear robust disturbance observer (DO) based on regional pole placement theory is constructed separately from the controller design to estimate and reject the first type of disturbance, and terminal sliding-mode (TSM) control is used to attenuate the second type of disturbance. By integrating the nonlinear robust DO with TSM control, a new elegant anti-disturbance control scheme based on a robust DO is proposed for a kind of nonlinear system, which can further improve the ability of anti-disturbance for nonlinear systems. Simulations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper studies the output tracking control problem for a class of uncertain MIMO nonlinear systems. The motivation comes from how to deal with unknown coupling system dynamics between subsystems and achieve the desired tracking when the system has parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. The difficulty is to guarantee that tracking errors enter an arbitrarily prescribed neighbourhood within a finite time. Based on the construction of a time-varying dynamic gain associated with tracking errors and the effective manipulation of nonlinear parametrization, a novel robust feedback controller is built up to ensure the boundedness of all closed-loop signals and the convergence of tracking errors to a small neighborhood approaching the origin in a finite time. Finally, the feasibility of control strategy is verified by numerical and practical examples.

Abstract:In this paper, the tracking problem is concerned for a class of nonlinear system. The primary objective is to achieve fixed‐time control performance in the presence of nonvanishing mismatched uncertainties and nonparametric external disturbance. Firstly, in order to estimate disturbance, a fixed‐time extended state observer with fractional power term is developed, the order of which is reduced to alleviate peaking value phenomenon. By reasonably switching among different estimation patterns, both transient and steady‐state performances are balanced. Secondly, by means of fuzzy logic system theory, an ESO‐based adaptive fuzzy control strategy with time‐varying gains is presented, and thus the mismatched nonlinearities are approximated, and the external disturbance is compensated in real time simultaneously. Moreover, by constructing a mixed barrier and quadratic type of Lyapunov function, the fixed‐time stability analysis is put forward for tracking error dynamics based on backstepping methodology. Finally, the advantages and effectiveness are illustrated by a numerical example on wheeled mobile robot. The main characteristic of this paper is to integrate ESO methodology into fuzzy control architecture in fixed‐time sense. As a consequence, not only the output tracking purpose, but also desirable transient performance can be achieved.

Abstract:A composite anti-disturbance control problem for a class of nonlinear systems is studied in this paper. There are two types of disturbances in the systems, one is the matched disturbance with bounded variation rate, the other is the unmatched time-varying disturbances. A nonlinear disturbance observer is designed to estimate the matched disturbances, which can be presented separately from the controller design. By integrating DOBC with back-stepping method, a composite DOBC and back-stepping controller is proposed, and the disturbance estimations are introduced into the design of virtual control laws to compensate the unmatched disturbances. In addition, it is proved that all the states in the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimate bounded (UUB). Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.
