Abstract:Since its successful inauguration in Beijing, August, 2012, the IEEE international Conference on Communications (ICCC) has been globally recognized as one of the important annual international conferences held by the IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc) and China Institute of Communications (CIC). IEEE/CIC ICCC'14, the third ICCC held in Shanghai, China, 13–15 October, 2014, continued to expand its influence and had attracted distinguished scholars, key researchers, young investigators and ambitious students from dozens of countries and regions. The technical program of ICCC 2014 features 4 world-class plenary keynote speeches, 8 technical symposia, 5 tutorials, 4 industrial and academic panels and 1 workshop, covering from decades-long hot topics such as MIMO, interference coordination, heterogeneous networks and etc., to recent eye-catchers such as big data and social networks. The conference not only provided a forum and seminar for active researchers from every directions of this academia, but also attracted delegates from the main players in the industry.
Universally-Optimal Distributed Algorithms for Known Topologies

Abstract:Many distributed optimization algorithms achieve existentially-optimal running times, meaning that there exists some pathological worst-case topology on which no algorithm can do better. Still, most networks of interest allow for exponentially faster algorithms. This motivates two questions: (1) What network topology parameters determine the complexity of distributed optimization? (2) Are there universally-optimal algorithms that are as fast as possible on every topology? We resolve these 25-year-old open problems in the known-topology setting (i.e., supported CONGEST) for a wide class of global network optimization problems including MST, $(1+\varepsilon)$-min cut, various approximate shortest paths problems, sub-graph connectivity, etc. In particular, we provide several (equivalent) graph parameters and show they are tight universal lower bounds for the above problems, fully characterizing their inherent complexity. Our results also imply that algorithms based on the low-congestion shortcut framework match the above lower bound, making them universally optimal if shortcuts are efficiently approximable. We leverage a recent result in hop-constrained oblivious routing to show this is the case if the topology is known -- giving universally-optimal algorithms for all above problems.

Abstract:As data structures and mathematical objects used for complex systems modeling, hypergraphs sit nicely poised between on the one hand the world of network models, and on the other that of higher-order mathematical abstractions from algebra, lattice theory, and topology. They are able to represent complex systems interactions more faithfully than graphs and networks, while also being some of the simplest classes of systems representing topological structures as collections of multidimensional objects connected in a particular pattern. In this paper we discuss the role of (undirected) hypergraphs in the science of complex networks, and provide a mathematical overview of the core concepts needed for hypernetwork modeling, including duality and the relationship to bicolored graphs, quantitative adjacency and incidence, the nature of walks in hypergraphs, and available topological relationships and properties. We close with a brief discussion of two example applications: biomedical databases for disease analysis, and domain-name system (DNS) analysis of cyber data.

Abstract:The Fifth International Conference on Applied Category Theory took place at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland on 18-22 July 2022. This conference follows the previous meetings at Leiden (2018), Oxford (2019), MIT (2020, fully online), and Cambridge (2021). The conference comprised 59 contributed talks, a poster session, an industry showcase session, and a session where junior researchers who had attended the Adjoint School presented the results of their research at the school. Information regarding the conference may be found at (<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://msp.cis.strath.ac.uk/act2022" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>). The contributions to ACT2022 ranged from pure to applied and included contributions in a wide range of disciplines in science and engineering. ACT2022 included talks in linguistics, functional programming, classical mechanics, quantum physics, probability theory, electrical engineering, epidemiology, thermodynamics, engineering, and logic. ACT2022 was sponsored by Huawei, Protocol Labs, Cambridge Quantum, Conexus, Topos, and SICSA (Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance). Submission to ACT2022 had three tracks: extended abstracts, software demonstrations, and proceedings. The extended abstract and software demonstration submissions had a page limit of 2 pages, and the proceedings track had a page limit of 14 pages. Only papers submitted to the proceedings track were considered for publication in this volume. In total, there were 97 submissions, of which 59 were accepted for presentation and 24 for publication in this volume. Publication of accepted submissions in the proceedings was determined by personal choice of the authors and not based on quality. Each submission received a review from three different members of the programming committee, and papers were selected based on discussion and consensus by these reviewers.

Abstract:We survey and introduce concepts and tools located at the intersection of information theory and network biology. We show that Shannon's information entropy, compressibility and algorithmic complexity quantify different local and global aspects of synthetic and biological data. We show examples such as the emergence of giant components in Erdos-Renyi random graphs, and the recovery of topological properties from numerical kinetic properties simulating gene expression data. We provide exact theoretical calculations, numerical approximations and error estimations of entropy, algorithmic probability and Kolmogorov complexity for different types of graphs, characterizing their variant and invariant properties. We introduce formal definitions of complexity for both labeled and unlabeled graphs and prove that the Kolmogorov complexity of a labeled graph is a good approximation of its unlabeled Kolmogorov complexity and thus a robust definition of graph complexity.

Abstract:This monograph presents an application of concepts and methods from algebraic topology to models of concurrent processes in computer science and their analysis. Taking well-known discrete models for concurrent processes in resource management as a point of departure, the book goes on to refine combinatorial and topological models. In the process, it develops tools and invariants for the new discipline directed algebraic topology, which is driven by fundamental research interests as well as by applications, primarily in the static analysis of concurrent programs. The state space of a concurrent program is described as a higher-dimensional space, the topology of which encodes the essential properties of the system. In order to analyse all possible executions in the state space, more than “just” the topological properties have to be considered: Execution paths need to respect a partial order given by the time flow. As a result, tools and concepts from topology have to be extended to take privileged directions into account. The target audience for this book consists of graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the field, mathematicians and computer scientists alike.

Abstract:Modeling distributed computing in a way enabling the use of formal methods is a challenge that has been approached from different angles, among which two techniques emerged at the turn of the century: protocol complexes, and directed algebraic topology. In both cases, the considered computational model generally assumes communication via shared objects, typically a shared memory consisting of a collection of read-write registers. Our paper is concerned with network computing, where the processes are located at the nodes of a network, and communicate by exchanging messages along the edges of that network. Applying the topological approach for verification in network computing is a considerable challenge, mainly because the presence of identifiers assigned to the nodes yields protocol complexes whose size grows exponentially with the size of the underlying network. However, many of the problems studied in this context are of local nature, and their definitions do not depend on the identifiers or on the size of the network. We leverage this independence in order to meet the above challenge, and present $\textit{local}$ protocol complexes, whose sizes do not depend on the size of the network. As an application of the design of "compact" protocol complexes, we reformulate the celebrated lower bound of $\Omega(\log^*n)$ rounds for 3-coloring the $n$-node ring, in the algebraic topology framework.

Abstract:We currently witness the emergence of interesting new network topologies optimized towards the traffic matrices they serve, such as demand-aware datacenter interconnects (e.g., ProjecToR) and demand-aware overlay networks (e.g., SplayNets). This paper introduces a formal framework and approach to reason about and design such topologies. We leverage a connection between the communication frequency of two nodes and the path length between them in the network, which depends on the entropy of the communication matrix. Our main contribution is a novel robust, yet sparse, family of network topologies which guarantee an expected path length that is proportional to the entropy of the communication patterns.

In this work, network connectivity has been discussed with the help of graph theory and advantages, disadvantages of various network topologies are also explained.

Abstract:With the blessing of information technology, we are living in an increasingly networked world. People, information and other entities are connected via World Wide Web, email networks, instant messaging networks, mobile communication networks, online social networks, etc. These online networks grow fast and possess huge amount of recorded information, which presents great opportunities in understanding the science of these networks, and in developing new applications from these networks and for these networks. The increasingly networked society has fundamentally changed our way of thinking, individual behaviors and social activities. It is foreseen that the public health relating to epidemic diseases is greatly impacted by this emerging connectivity as they are by nature mediated by direct or indirect human interactions and mobility. However, new challenges have to be met --- the networks are huge and information is noisy, and they demand new methodologies in accessing and analyzing these networks, and in developing theories and applications for the networks. To meet with these challenges, researchers from a wide range of academic fields, including theory and algorithms, data mining and machine learning, computer systems and networks, statistical physics and complex systems, sociology, social psychology, economics and managerial science, etc. are all actively studying various aspects concerning social and information networks. However, we lack the proper opportunities for people from these diverse backgrounds to directly interact with each other. The diversity of approaches and methodologies to study various social networks has raised the need for an interdisciplinary effort to create the required expertise to address the fundamental open questions in this field. This workshop is intended to present such an opportunity and serve as a forum to bring together people from various fields to exchange their latest research results and to sparkle new ideas and directions to properly understand these networks. It will be held on August 12, 2012, in conjunction with ACM KDD 2012, August 12-16, Beijing, China.

By constructing a new kind of digraph and employing a purely graph theoretical method, the convergence results for first-order consensus algorithms are extended to solve the second-order case under certain assumptions.

Abstract:We continue the study of the $k$-cut complex $\Delta_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ initiated in the paper of Bayer, Denker, Jelić Milutinović, Rowlands, Sundaram and Xue [Topology of cut complexes of graphs, SIAM J. on Discrete Math. 38(2): 1630--1675 (2024)]. We give explicit formulas for the $f$- and $h$-polynomials of the cut complex $\Delta_k(G_1+G_2) $ of the disjoint union of two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, and for the homology representation of $\Delta_k(K_m+K_n)$. We also study the cut complex of the squared path and the grid graph. Our techniques include tools from combinatorial topology, discrete Morse theory and equivariant poset topology.

Abstract:This paper reports on the details of the International Competition on Graph Counting Algorithms (ICGCA) held in 2023. The graph counting problem is to count the subgraphs satisfying specified constraints on a given graph. The problem belongs to #P-complete, a computationally tough class. Since many essential systems in modern society, e.g., infrastructure networks, are often represented as graphs, graph counting algorithms are a key technology to efficiently scan all the subgraphs representing the feasible states of the system. In the ICGCA, contestants were asked to count the paths on a graph under a length constraint. The benchmark set included 150 challenging instances, emphasizing graphs resembling infrastructure networks. Eleven solvers were submitted and ranked by the number of benchmarks correctly solved within a time limit. The winning solver, TLDC, was designed based on three fundamental approaches: backtracking search, dynamic programming, and model counting or #SAT (a counting version of Boolean satisfiability). Detailed analyses show that each approach has its own strengths, and one approach is unlikely to dominate the others. Abstract:We present an overview of the recent progress of applying computational geometry techniques to solve some questions, such as topology construction and broadcasting, in wireless ad hoc networks. Treating each wireless device as a node in a two-dimensional plane, we model the wireless networks by unit disk graphs in which two nodes are connected if their Euclidean distance is no more than one. We first summarize the current status of constructing sparse spanners for unit disk graphs with various combinations of the following properties: bounded stretch factor, bounded node degree, planar, and bounded total edges weight (compared with the minimum spanning tree). Instead of constructing subgraphs by removing links, we then review the algorithms for constructing a sparse backbone (connected dominating set), that is, subgraph from the subset of nodes. Abstract:Communication networks form the backbone of our society. Topology control algorithms optimize the topology of such communication networks. Due to the importance of communication networks, a topology control algorithm should guarantee certain required consistency properties (e.g., connectivity of the topology), while achieving desired optimization properties (e.g., a bounded number of neighbors). Real-world topologies are dynamic (e.g., because nodes join, leave, or move within the network), which requires topology control algorithms to operate in an incremental way, i.e., based on the recently introduced modifications of a topology. Visual programming and specification languages are a proven means for specifying the structure as well as consistency and optimization properties of topologies. In this paper, we present a novel methodology, based on a visual graph transformation and graph constraint language, for developing incremental topology control algorithms that are guaranteed to fulfill a set of specified consistency and optimization constraints. More specifically, we model the possible modifications of a topology control algorithm and the environment using graph transformation rules, and we describe consistency and optimization properties using graph constraints. On this basis, we apply and extend a well-known constructive approach to derive refined graph transformation rules that preserve these graph constraints. We apply our methodology to re-engineer an established topology control algorithm, kTC, and evaluate it in a network simulation study to show the practical applicability of our approach
