Abstract:We settle the question of where exactly the reduced Kronecker coefficients lie on the spectrum between the Littlewood-Richardson and Kronecker coefficients by showing that every Kronecker coefficient of the symmetric group is equal to a reduced Kronecker coefficient by an explicit construction. This implies the equivalence of a question by Stanley from 2000 and a question by Kirillov from 2004 about combinatorial interpretations of these two families of coefficients. Moreover, as a corollary, we deduce that deciding the positivity of reduced Kronecker coefficients is $NP$-hard, and computing them is $\#P$-hard under parsimonious many-one reductions.

Abstract:We present a study of three families of Kronecker coefficients, which we describe in terms of reduced Kronecker coefficients. This study is grounded on the generating function of the coefficients, proved by a bijection between two combinatorial objects. This study includes the connection between plane partitions and these three families of reduced Kronecker coefficients, providing us their combinatorial interpretation. As an application, we verify that the saturation hypothesis holds for our three families of reduced Kronecker coefficients. The study also includes other interpretation in terms of the quasipolynomials that govern these families. We specify the degree and the period of these quasipolynomials. Finally, the direct relation between Kronecker coefficients and reduced Kronecker coefficients allows us to give some observations about the rate of growth of the Kronecker coefficients associated to the reduced Kronecker coefficients of the study.

Abstract:Kronecker product is a powerful operation in matrix computations. This paper presents a technique called multiple Kronecker product sum (or shortly MKPS) approximation. We show that a matrix can be exactly represented or approximated, to within a specific tolerance, by the sum of multiple Kronecker products of lower dimension matrices. Since an image can be viewed as a matrix, MKPS approximation serves as an alternative image representation. We develop an image decomposition-reconstruction framework based on MKPS approximation. Our current results show that MKPS approximation is an attractive and flexible transform which offers an alternative way for understanding images.

Abstract:We study analogues of Kronecker coefficients for symmetric inverse semigroups, for dual symmetric inverse semigroups and for the inverse semigroups of bijections between subquotients of finite sets. In all cases, we reduce the problem of determination of such coefficients to some group-theoretic and combinatorial problems. For symmetric inverse semigroups, we provide an explicit formula in terms of the classical Kronecker and Littlewood–Richardson coefficients for symmetric groups.

Irreducible Characters for the Symmetric Groups and Kostka Matrices

Abstract:In an earlier paper [1] it was shown that the Frobenius compound characters for the symmetric groups are related to the irreducible characters by a linear relation that involves a unitriagular coupling matrix that gives the Frobenius characters in terms of linear combinations of the irreducible characters. It is desirable to invert this relationship since we have formulas for the Frobenius characters and want the values for the irreducible characters. This inversion is straightforward and yields both the irreducible characters but also the coupling matrix that turns out to be the Kostka matrix in the original direction. We show that if the Frobenius monomial identity is applied a modification of it, equation (22), produces a monomial formula that produces the Kostka matrix inverse without involving the characters of either type. However it is a formidable task to execute this procedure for symmetric groups of even modest order. Alternatively the inversion by means of the unitriangular coupling matrix produces the Kostka matrix and the irreducible characters simultaneously and with much less effort than required for the monomial approach. Moreover there is a surprise.

Abstract:Compound matrices play an important role in many fields of mathematics and have recently found new applications in systems and control theory. However, the explicit formulas for these compounds are non-trivial and not always easy to use. Here, we derive new formulas for the multiplicative and additive compounds of a matrix using Kronecker products and sums. This provides a new approach to matrix compounds based on the well-known and powerful theory of Kronecker products and sums. We demonstrate several applications of these new formulas, including deriving a new expression for the additive compound of the product of two matrices.

Abstract:The Kronecker product enlightens a sophisticated and esthetically pleasing algebraic structure that is a fundamental framework for diverse applications, such as signal processing, image analysis, and quantum computing. This study, proposing an iterative methodology grounded in Wirtinger calculus and polar decomposition, delves into the nearest Kronecker product problem under orthonormal constraints. The iterative approach ensures global convergence toward a local solution from any initial value. Numerical experiments are given to show the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach. Mainly, when the target matrix in the objective function is decomposable, the recovery of the original structure is achievable.

Abstract:Let $\alpha : \Gamma \curvearrowright A$ be an action of a discrete group $\Gamma$ on a unital C*-algebra $A$ by *-automorphisms and let $A \rtimes_{\alpha,\lambda} \Gamma$ denote the corresponding reduced crossed product C*-algebra. Assuming that $\Gamma$ satisfies the approximation property, we establish a sufficient and (almost always) necessary condition on the action $\alpha$ for the existence of a Galois correspondence between intermediate C*-algebras for the inclusion $A \subseteq A \rtimes_{\alpha,\lambda} \Gamma$ and partial subactions of $\alpha$. This condition, which we refer to as pointwise residual proper outerness, is a natural noncommutative generalization of freeness.

Abstract:We review the properties of the Kronecker (direct, or tensor) product of square matrices $A \otimes B \otimes C \cdots$ in terms of Hubbard operators. In its simplest form, a Hubbard operator $X_n^{i,j}$ can be expressed as the $n$-square matrix which has entry 1 in position $(i,j)$ and zero in all other entries. The algebra and group properties of the observables that define a multipartite quantum system are notably straightforward in such a framework. In particular, we use the Kronecker product in Hubbard notation to get the Clebsch-Gordan decomposition of the product group $SU(2) \times SU(2)$. Finally, the $n$-dimensional irreducible representations so obtained are used to derive closed forms of the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients that rule the addition of angular momenta. Our results can be further developed in many different directions.

Abstract:We present algorithms to perform modular polynomial multiplication or modular dot product efficiently in a single machine word. We pack polynomials into integers and perform several modular operations with machine integer or floating point arithmetic. The modular polynomials are converted into integers using Kronecker substitution (evaluation at a sufficiently large integer). With some control on the sizes and degrees, arithmetic operations on the polynomials can be performed directly with machine integers or floating point numbers and the number of conversions can be reduced. We also present efficient ways to recover the modular values of the coefficients. This leads to practical gains of quite large constant factors for polynomial multiplication, prime field linear algebra and small extension field arithmetic.

Abstract:In this work, we study some algebraic aspects of combined matrices $\mathcal{C}(A)$, where the entries of $A$ belongs to a number field $K$ and $A$ is a non singular matrix. In other words, $A$ is a $n\times n$ belonging to the General Linear Group over $K$ denoted by $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$. Also we analyze the case in which the matrix $A$ belongs to algebraic subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$ such as unimodular group, that is $A^2$ is a $n\times n$ belonging to the Special Linear Group denoted by $\mathrm{SL}_n(K)$, Triangular groups, Diagonal groups among others. In particular, we analyze entirely the case $n=2$ giving explicitely the diagonalization of $\mathcal{C}(A)$, that includes characteristic polynomials, eigenvalues and eigenfactors.

Machine-Learning Kronecker Coefficients

Abstract:The Kronecker coefficients are the decomposition multiplicities of the tensor product of two irreducible representations of the symmetric group. Unlike the Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, which are the analogues for the general linear group, there is no known combinatorial description of the Kronecker coefficients, and it is an NP-hard problem to decide whether a given Kronecker coefficient is zero or not. In this paper, we show that standard machine-learning algorithms such as Nearest Neighbors, Convolutional Neural Networks and Gradient Boosting Decision Trees may be trained to predict whether a given Kronecker coefficient is zero or not. Our results show that a trained machine can efficiently perform this binary classification with high accuracy ($\approx 0.98$).

Abstract:For a group $G$, a subgroup $U \leq G$ and a group $\mathrm{Inn}(G) \leq A \leq \mathrm{Aut}(G)$, we say that $U$ is an $A$-covering group of $G$ if $G = \bigcup_{a\in A}U^a$. A theorem of Jordan (1872) implies that if $G$ is a finite group, $A = \mathrm{Inn}(G)$ and $U$ is an $A$-covering group of $G$, then $U = G$. Motivated by a question concerning Kronecker classes of field extensions, Neumann and Praeger (1988) conjectured that, more generally, there is an integer function $f$ such that if $G$ is a finite group and $U$ is an $A$-covering subgroup of $G$, then $|G:U| \leq f(|A:\mathrm{Inn}(G)|)$. A key piece of evidence for this conjecture is a theorem of Praeger (1994), which asserts that there is a two-variable integer function $g$ such that if $G$ is a finite group and $U$ is an $A$-covering subgroup of $G$, then $|G:U|\leq g(|A:\mathrm{Inn}(G)|,c)$ where $c$ is the number of $A$-chief factors of~$G$. Unfortunately, the proof of this result contains an error. In this paper, using a different argument, we give a correct proof of this theorem.

Abstract:This is the first of two papers dedicated to the computation of the reduced C*-algebra of a connected, linear, real reductive group up to Morita equivalence, and the verification of the Connes-Kasparov conjecture for these groups. These results were originally announced by Antony Wassermann in 1987. In Part I we shall give details of the C*-algebraic Morita equivalence, and then compute the Connes-Kasparov morphism subject to some results in tempered representation theory that we shall prove in Part II using tools from David Vogan's classification of the tempered dual.

A first Kronecker limit formula for Kleinian groups

Abstract:We prove a first Kronecker limit formula for cofinite discrete subgroups of SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$, also called Kleinian groups, generalizing a method of Goldstein over SL$(2,\mathbb R)$. The proof uses the Fourier expansion of Eisenstein series, leading to an analogue of the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function, and whose transformation law produces a function analogous to one related to Dedekind sums. We derive several basic properties of this new function.

Abstract:We develop a theory of average sizes of kernels of generic matrices with support constraints defined in terms of graphs and hypergraphs. We apply this theory to study unipotent groups associated with graphs. In particular, we establish strong uniformity results pertaining to zeta functions enumerating conjugacy classes of these groups. We deduce that the numbers of conjugacy classes of F q \mathbf {F}_q -points of the groups under consideration depend polynomially on q q . Our approach combines group theory, graph theory, toric geometry, and p p -adic integration. Our uniformity results are in line with a conjecture of Higman on the numbers of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrix groups. Our findings are, however, in stark contrast to related results by Belkale and Brosnan on the numbers of generic symmetric matrices of given rank associated with graphs.

Abstract:This, to a large extent, expository paper, describes the theory of multicomponent hierarchies of evolution equations of XKP type, where X=A, B, C or D, and AKP=KP, and their reductions, associated to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl groups of classical Lie algebras of type X. As usual, the main tool is the multicomponent boson-fermion correspondence, which leads to the corresponding tau-functions, wave functions, dressing operators and Lax operators.

Abstract:A numerical algorithm that computes the decomposition of any finite-dimen\-sio\-nal unitary reducible representation of a compact Lie group is presented. The algorithm, which does not rely on an algebraic insight on the group structure, is inspired by quantum mechanical notions. After generating two adapted states (these objects will be conveniently defined in {\bf Def.\,II.1}) and after appropriate algebraic manipulations, the algorithm returns the block matrix structure of the representation in terms of its irreducible components. It also provides an adapted orthonormal basis. The algorithm can be used to compute the Clebsch--Gordan coefficients of the tensor product of irreducible representations of a given compact Lie group. The performance of the algorithm is tested on various examples: the decomposition of the regular representation of two finite groups and the computation of Clebsch--Gordan coefficients of two examples of tensor products of representations of $SU(2)$.
