Abstract:Environmental problems became a widespread concern only recently. Our Common Future, the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, marked a turning-point. The Commission demonstrated clearly the interdependence between environment and society: services provided by the natural environment are not free. A continuous non-sustainable development jeopardizes the existence of humankind. Technology has become increasingly disciplinary, compartmented and consumptive. The primary goal of science and technology must be to diminish the gap between the parsimonious natural cycles and wasteful human exploitation and production.

Abstract:This paper addresses social justice, ecology, and environmental ethics and how they can be used to improve sustainable development. While ecological preservation focuses on preserving the natural environment to maintain the biotic community's balance and the services it offers, environmental ethics deals with how humans morally understand the environment. Social justice deals with properly allocating the ecological advantages and the costs. This paper also seeks to present a framework of sustainable development that considers the concepts above and their interactions to achieve sustainable development that does not transgress the natural carrying capacity and is progressive in its distribution of resources. The discussion links the argument to theoretical concepts, stressing the necessity of integrating ethical elements into environmental policies and activities. All the principles of justice in the distribution of resources, moral reasoning, and reverence for ecological systems were introduced in developing the proposed framework to ensure comprehensive and sustainable growth.

Abstract:2012 is the twentieth anniversary of United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil.Reviewing the progress of the last twenty years,the paper summarizes the achievements and shortcomings of sustainable development strategies and puts forward clear route map for the future world healthy development.The people's connotation recognition to sustainable development theory transfers from survival to development,from development to sustainable development.Development is a behavior trace in a complex system of nature-society-economy,and this vector will promote the complex system evolving in a more reasonable and harmonious direction.The sustainable development emphasizes the connotation of integrity,endogenous and comprehensive.The external response of sustainable development strategy is to deal with the relations of man and nature,and is how to firm support to sustainable capability.The internal response of sustainable development strategy is the soft support of sustainable development capability.When the human's demand to nature is balanced with the human's return to nature,human's efforts to this generation is balanced with human's efforts to the next generations,and human's consideration are both on the development of this region and on the development of the other regions or on the global development,the basic connotation of sustainable development will be more enriched.Sustainable development reveals the systematic essence of development,coordination and sustainability.Development focuses on dynamic characteristics of productivity improvement and social achievement.Coordination focuses on internal efficiency and quality connotation.Sustainability judges the long-time reasonability of development progress.Three characteristics embodied in the theoretical system of sustainable development are quantity dimension,quality dimension and time-space dimension,which are the completion of pursuing development.Sustainable development reflects the organic unity of power,quality and equity.The power of development is the ability of development,the potential of development,the speed of development and its sustainability of a nation or a region.The quality of development is the degree of closeness between the standard of rationality and the harmonious degree of man and nature,the resource saving and friendly environment.The equity of development is the income distribution system,common wealth degree,human development index(HDI),and the degree to overcome the differences between the rich and the poor,between the urban and the rural area.Sustainable development establishes the human environment of harmony,stability and safety and reflects the green operation of speed,quantity and quality.In less than ten years in the future,in order to realize the target of being a well-off of society and having developed economy,sound democratic system,advanced science and education,flourished culture,better ecology,advanced society,healthy spirit,and good living quality,Chinese governments should develop from comprehensive,coordinated and sustainable perspectives,take the human as the emphasis,promote the self-perfection of human,and take the civilized developing road of developed production,abundant living,and good ecology.The following seven themes of sustainable development are keeping the rational growth of economy,improving the quality of economic growth,satisfying the basic requirements of the man-orientated,adjusting quantity growth of population,improving the quality of population,maintaining,extending and protecting the natural resource foundation of nature,solving the bottleneck of developing by science and technology,and balance the environment and development.

Abstract:Background and scope: Since its inception two decades ago, the concept of sustainable development has suffered from a proliferation of definitions, such that it has increasingly come to mean many things to many different people. This has limited its credibility, called into question its practical application and the significance of associated achievements and, overall, limited the progress in environmental and social developments which it was designed to underpin. Goal: This viewpoint article is intended to re-open the concept of sustainable development for discussion 20 years on from the Brundtland Report, in the context of the current state of the world, our growing understanding of ecosystems and their response to stressors and the parallel increase in recognition of inherent limitations to that understanding. Approach: Following a brief review of the diverse manner in which the concept has developed over time, we present the case for application of a series of simple conditions for sustainability, originally developed by The Natural Step in the early 90s, which nevertheless still provide a sound basis on which progress towards sustainable development could be monitored. The paper also highlights the unavoidable links between sustainability and ethics, including those in the sensitive fields of population and quality of life. Discussion: Overall we argue the need for the concept of sustainable development to be reclaimed from the plethora of economically-focused or somewhat vague and un-measurable definitions which have found increasing favour in recent years and which all too often accompany relatively minor progress against 'business as usual'. Recommendations and perspectives: The vision encapsulated in the Brundtland Report was ground-breaking. If, however, true sustainability in human interactions with the biosphere is to be realised, a far stronger and more empirical interpretation of the original intent is urgently required. To be effective, such an interpretation must encompass and guide developments in political instruments and public policy as well as corporate decision-making, and must focus increasingly on addressing the root causes of major threats to sustainability rather than just their consequences.

Abstract:When the 17th National Congress of the CPC set Ecological Civilization as a goal in 2007,many studies on this topic have been initiated across the country.This paper firstly analyzes the historic changes of relationship between human and nature under different civilizations.Then,it concludes that the core of ecological civilization lies in the harmony between human and nature and analyzes some models of developing the harmonic relationships.Finally,the paper proposes following suggestions: developing the harmonious environment education programs,fostering harmonious ecological values,promoting science-based sustainable growth, acting up to the socioeconomic,nature and ecology laws and establishing the green circulation economy.

Abstract:Ecological restoration and conservation are primary components of sustainable development around the world, particularly during the contemporary era of climate change. However, restoration and conservation are not free; they consume huge amounts of resources that would otherwise support social and economic development. Therefore, excessive conservation creates a risk of creating rather than eliminating poverty. Unfortunately, scientists have largely ignored the balance between these contrasting goals. Here, we discuss the concept of finding the threshold that represents a suitable balance between ecological conservation and economic development, thereby maximizing the benefits for both humans and the environment and promoting sustainable development. To demonstrate the concept, we examined China's ecological restoration achievements and discussed some of the unforeseen negative consequences that accompanied these achievements to discuss how future policies could better balance ecological and socioeconomic goals.

Abstract:Forest ecosystems are increasingly subject to disturbances, such as extreme (climate) events, fires and pathological outbreaks, which exert significant (and still poorly quantified) economic impacts, despite their intrinsic resilience. How forest management addresses these challenges will have profound effects on human health, environmental diversity, (ecological and economic) productivity and the ability of forest ecosystems to recovery from exogenous shocks. Assuming forests as ensuring ecosystem services that are vital to society and human well-being, in addition to providing wood material, a better knowledge of forest ecosystems appears a key requirement to delineate a developmental strategy that guarantees environmental protection objectives and achievement of climate and energy targets. In the context of Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the information available on forest management practices in Europe still seems not completely suitable to provide a comprehensive overview of ecosystem conditions, their economic value, and their biodiversity. Based on a literature review, the present contribution focuses on recent dynamics of the forestry sector in Europe, delineating the inherent complexity in the environmental-economic nexus. Additionally, the extensive use of a key natural resource such as wood exerts social implications for local districts adapting to ecological change—from climate warming to landscape transformations. In line with earlier studies, our paper confirms the role of the technical-economic dimension of forestry in sustainable development paths of districts and regions, affecting together (i) short-term economic dynamics, (ii) the growth prospects of the sector, (iii) the organization of the supply chain, (iv) the interconnections between companies, and (v) investment strategies at large. One of the major issues is the low reliability of official statistics to provide a coherent picture of the actual status of forest resources. At the same time, forestry practices are pivotal in maintaining habitats and species while increasing the timber production that remains (too) sustainable. This is the policy direction constantly given by the European Commission to stimulate over time public bodies and private (in whose hands is about 60% of European forests) to start virtuous paths in the circular economy with considerable repercussions in terms of additional jobs, recycled materials, mt of CO2 equivalent avoided, and increase in community added value. In this context, forestry should assure a more 'holistic' contribution to sustainable development paths at various spatial scales. This means concentrating on both economic and environmental targets based on the identification of significant (ecological-economic) dimensions that may delineate future lines of investigation and policy intervention, while increasing between member countries and regional authorities.

Abstract:Sustainable Development became from the start one of the most essential elements of global policy. The interest in the future of our planet modified people's mentality concerning economic development. A number of changes were developed over the years in direct connection with environmental stability. The linear economy turned into a circular one, preservation of carbon resources, “green processes” in industry and agriculture, as well as pollution elimination from air, land, and water represent ways to safer society progress. New tools were created for sustainable development. Among these, the Sustainable Development Goals are of great importance as they clarify of the targets to be fulfilled. These targets are obviously in close relation to the measures for environmental protection. The paper presents the 17 Sustainable Development Goals with their targets as well as the connection of these to the safety of the environment. The role of education and information in the field and the need for global cooperation are underlined.

Abstract:There is a growing interest today in landscape as an important perspective in sustainable development. A landscape perspective is being promoted at the global level by all of the most important institutions and through important regional directives and policies. The opportunities presented by a landscape-based approach for the European continent mark out the landscape as a possible new paradigm for our development model, with the aim of harmonious integration of social, economic and environmental factors in space and time. Current socio-economic trends, favoring abandonment and industrialization and conservation policies, supporting and promoting renaturalization, are threatening the loss of critical heritage resources. However, while socio-economic trends are difficult to change, more attention should be placed in conservation strategies. The rural landscape is largely a historical product and the time has come to assess it accordingly, identifying not only its threats and criticalities, but also challenging the policy directives and research approaches developed in recent decades that are negatively affecting the conservation and management of values associated with it. At the policy level, international directives dealing with have reinforced the trend toward cultural globalization by often overlapping the idea of nature with that of landscape, encouraging renaturalization, particularly in the form of forest cover, and neglecting ancient landscape patterns and the long and rich cultural history that led to their creation. It is important to encourage the recognition of a different level of biodiversity, biocultural diversity, looking for examples of positive integration between society and environment occurring in the rural landscape.

Abstract:This paper reviews the principal policy-related issues for which the professions of ecology and economics provide conflicting prescriptions. Emphasis is placed on the work of the World Bank, although the issues raised are relevant to a broad range of organizations. Rather than providing definitive solutions, the paper suggests an agenda for research in the ecology-economics interface.Present-day neoclassical economic theory and its applications to development policy seriously overlook or undervalue major ecological concerns. The economic values of environmental services, while very real, are systematically underestimated in cost-benefit analysis because of measurement and valuation difficulties. ‘Intangible’ environmental benefits, such as those derived from the preservation of biological diversity, are recognized even less in economic analysis. The irreversible environmental effects of projects or policies are usually treated no differently from more reversible effects. The practice of discounting economic costs and benefits strongly favors projects with short-term benefits and long-term costs, often (though not always) with highly negative environmental effects. Using Gross National Product as a measure of development progress encourages rapid overexploitation of a country's natural resource base. Extravagant natural resource consumption by industrialized countries may undermine long-term development prospects of developing countries. The emphasis of many developing countries on export crops rather than domestic food production often entails major environmental costs.The paper outlines some of the principles of ecologically sustainable development. At the project level, safe minimum standards are an important environmental supplement to cost-benefit analysis. At the national policy level, steady-state economics can be used to reconcile economic planning with the limits to growth in natural resource consumption.

And we must make wise use of human and capital resources. must put to rest the myth that it is necessary to choose between jobs and the environment, or between development and untouched nature. This requires a collaborative, interdisciplinary process - one that draws from diverse talents and perspectives to achieve an integrated solution. As the great American naturalist, Aldo Leopold, said, We abuse the land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see the land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect. Two recent projects are attempts to put this philosophy into practice: Dewees Island Master Plan and the Greening of the Grand Canyon.

Abstract:The production of services and goods needs consumption of available material and energy. An economy often focuses on sources of high-quality material/energy first produced by nature for increasing growth. World heritages sites (WHSs) have become major tourist attractions that promote economic development for developing countries. The increased number of tourists has thus brought about threats to ecological environment. Scholars stress that it should be sustainable or "green growth" since it comes to economic growth currently. The aim of this research is to establish a sustainable development model for WHSs to empirically investigate the dilemma between economic development and ecological protection with particular emphasis on strategies that promote the sustainability. The study took China's 45 WHSs as samples and constructed a two-stage sustainable development model to analyze the trade-off between economic development and ecological protection. The dynamic network slacks-based measure was employed for dynamic performance evaluation for the period 2013-2019. The results suggest that a strong balance between economic development and ecological protection would be essential for sustainability. Spearman's rank correlation was also used to verify that there are no conflicts between the two processes. In addition, this study demonstrates that an effective government policy covering regulations of economic development and ecological protection can positively influence sustainable development. The governments are suggested to improve the section that the WHS performs inefficient. Involvement of balanceable sustainable development for WHSs needs necessary cooperation during concerned institutions, practitioners, and communities. The WHSs are recommended to receive strict standard of supervision, management, and control.

Abstract:The improvement of the habitat environment in China is guided by the following general policy: overall development in urban and rural, in different regions, coordinate development between economy and social, harmonious development between human and nature, coordinated development between domestic and opening up. The habitat environment should be planned and designed in a larger environment and be divided into smaller environments. The theme of 2004 World Habitat Day is Cities-Engines of Rural Development, which underlines the importance of mutually beneficial linkages that are essential for the development of both cities and rural areas. The guide theory is the Scientific Concept of Development, which focuses on integrating humanism with overall, coordinated and sustainable economic and social development, while pushing forward the reform and development drive to coordinate development in both urban and rural areas and in different regions, achieve harmonious development between man and nature, coordinate domestic development and open up to the outside world.
