Abstract:Abstract In the present study, Calcium oxide (CaO) obtained from eggshells has been used as a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production from highly viscous non-edible rubber seed oil (RSO). Characterization of synthesized catalyst was done with the help of scanning electron microscope equipped with Energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Response surface methodology (RSM) with central composite design (CCD) was used to optimize the process parameters and 1 H-NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy analysis was performed to find the conversion of RSO to biodiesel. A conversion of 99.7% of RSO to biodiesel was obtained at 12:1 methanol to oil molar ratio, 4 (wt%) of catalyst, and 3 hour reaction time with a quadratic regression model of R 2 of value 0.9566 was obtained. The composition of prepared biodiesel is estimated with the help of Gas Chromatogram-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was also trained to predict biodiesel conversion and the value of R 2 obtained was 0.9976. It was observed that predicted conversion values from ANN were better when compared to prediction using RSM.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to use calcium oxide (CaO) extracted from eggshells as a catalyst to produce biodiesel from high - viscosity non - edible rubber seed oil (RSO) and optimize the parameters of this process. Specifically, the research optimized process parameters such as the molar ratio of methanol to oil, the amount of catalyst (weight percentage), and reaction time through the response surface method (RSM) and central composite design (CCD). In addition, the research also adopted an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the conversion rate of biodiesel and compared it with the RSM prediction results to determine which method has better predictive ability. The main findings in the paper include: - Through the optimized experimental conditions (the molar ratio of methanol to oil is 12:1, the amount of catalyst is 4%, and the reaction time is 3 hours), a 99.7% conversion rate of rubber seed oil to biodiesel was obtained. - A quadratic regression model was established, and its \(R^2\) value is 0.9566, indicating that the model has a high degree of fit to the data. - The ANN model trained with the Levenberg - Marquardt algorithm performs better in predicting the biodiesel conversion rate, and its \(R^2\) value reaches 0.9976. In conclusion, this research not only explores a cost - effective and environmentally friendly biodiesel production method, but also improves the efficiency and predictability of the production process through advanced statistical and machine - learning techniques.
