Abstract:This writing discusses maqāṣidi tafsīr (the interpretation that represents God’s intention). It endeavors to answer three questions: Firstly, what are models of maqāṣidi tafsīr that are in circulation? Secondly, what are their strengths and weaknesses? Thirdly, what are the true forms of maqāṣidi tafsīr? Historical approach is employed to answer the first question, whereas critical hermeneutics and philosophy are used to discussed the second and third questions. Using the intellectual history, the process of the formation of maqāṣidi tafsīr will be discovered; critical hermeneutics will uncover its strengths and weaknesses; and new frameworks will be formulated for contemporary contexts using philosophical hermeneutics. It is expected from this writing that maqāṣidi tafsīr will remain theologically, epistemologically and hermeneutically well-established so that it will be considered as one of alternative approaches in the Quranic studies. Three conclusions are drawn from this writing: firstly, maqāṣidi tafsīr is in the process of becoming a theory for studying the Qur’an. Secondly, maqāṣidi tafsīr does have strength and weaknesses. It originates from Islamic tradition, and becomes a kind of alternative-moderate between two extreme tafsīrs: textual and liberal-substantialist. Still, it is not yet well-established in term of theology, epistemology and hermeneutics. Third, maqāṣidi tafsīr combines three approaches in locating what God wants in the Quran, because it is not only textual, ideal-moral, but also spiritual-substantial. [Artikel ini membahas tafsir maqāṣid dengan menjawab tiga pertanyaan yaitu seperti apa model tafsir maqāṣid yang beredar saat ini, apa kelemahan dan kelebihan dari model tersebut, dan bagaimana bentuk tafsir maqāṣid yang sebenarnya. Pertanyaan pertama dijelaskan menggunakan pendekatan sejarah dan pertanyaan kedua dan ketiga dijelaskan menggunakan pendekatan hermeneutika kritis dan filosofis. Sejarah intelektual digunakan untuk menelusuri proses pembentukan tafsir maqāṣid sedangkan hermenuetika kritis digunakan untuk menilai kekuatan dan kelemahan serta hermeneutika filosofis untuk mereformulasi kerangka baru sesuai konteks kontemporer. Artikel ini mencoba meyakinkan secara teologis, epistemologis, dan hermeneutis bahwa tafsir maqāṣid akan semakin mapan dan bisa menjadi alternatif pendekatan dalan studi Qur’an. Tiga kesimpulan dalam artikel ini adalah pertama, tafsir maqāṣid sedang berproses menjadi sebuah teori dalam studi Qur’an. Kedua,meski mempunyai kelebihan dan kekurangan, pendekatan ini bisa menjadi alternatif moderat antara tafsir tektual dan liberal-subtansialis. Abstract:Adanya tulisan ini merupakan suatu upaya yang dilakukan oleh penulis dalam penggunaan tafsir kontekstual yang diperkenalkan oleh Abdullah Saeed sebagai penyempurna dari teori yang dimiliki oleh Fazlur Rahman yakni double movement. Dalam tulisan ini penulis memaparkan perihal kepemimpinan perempuan khususnya mengenai kata qiwamah yang menjadi sebuah polemik dalam ruang lingkup keilmuwan terutama di bidang tafsir. Hal ini tentunya didasari dengan beberapa pendapat yang disertai dengan dalil-dalil yang saling berhubungan satu sama lainnya. Sehingga kata qiwamah itu sendiri dapat dimaknai sebagai pemimpin yang memiliki sisi keistimewaan perempuan dibandingkan laki-laki yang memiliki kemampuan dalam memberikan nafkah kepada istri. Sehingga dengan demikian, sangat diperlukan adanya kajian lebih lanjut terkait kata qiwwamah itu sendiri mengingat pada saat ini tidak hanya laki-laki saja yang bisa menjadi pemimpin bahkan sebaliknya.

Abstract:This article discusses an interpretation of the Qur’an by Abdullah Said using the contextual interpretation model. However, this paper will focus on how Abdullah Saeed developed the concept hierarchy of values inspired by Fazlur Rahman's thought, how application and implication of this concept in Qur’anic interpretation. Abdullah Saeed developed and formulated the concept hierarchy of values into five levels, including obligatory values, fundamental values, protective values, implementational values, and instructional values. The five hierarchies of values become a complete unified frame as an effort to the contextual interpretation of the Qur’an, especially the ethico-legal verses that mostly fill the daily life of most Muslims based on the understanding of maqashid al-sharia and the concept of good deeds. This study uses a descriptive analysis method and hermeneutic analysis techniques to apply the concept hierarchy of values in the Qur’anic interpretation. The results of this paper are in the contextual interpretation of QS. Al-Hujurat in the 1st-5th verses are instructional value; the 6th and 9th verses are combination of fundamental, protectional and impementational values; the 7th-8th verses and the 14th-18th verses are obligatory value; the 10th verse implementational value; the 11th-13th verses are instructional value. Abstract:Majāz mursal is one of al-Majāz's styles in Arabic rhetoric sciences. It contains an implicit or implied meaning that is not explicitly stated. The literal approach will lead to the loss of the implicit meaning in majāz mursal. Therefore, this study aims to compare the approach used by several translation texts in the translation of synecdoche in Quranic discourse specific to the relationship of the event that will occur (ĩtibār mā sayakūn) to see the equivalence of the actual meaning found in the Quran with the target text. This study is qualitative library research for adopting content analysis methods and purposive sampling techniques. This study's primary data source was collected from al-Burhān fĩ 'Ulum al-Quran. Four translation texts of the Quran by Hidayah House of Quran, Karya Bestari, Abdullah Basmeih, and Yayasan Restu are used as a corpus to examine the approaches of translation used by the four texts. Data analysis of the selected translation is based on the theory of explicitation introduced by Vinay & Darbelnet (1995) and the explicitation technique presented by Murtisari (2016). To measure the accuracy and compatibility of resource language messages with the target language, interpretation of the book of tafsĩr are referred to, such as al-Kashshāf by Al-Zamakhsyarĩ, al-Jalālain by Al-Suyūti, An'war At-Tanzĩl wa Asrāru At-Ta'wĩl by Baydhāwi, Al-Tashĩl lĩ 'Ulum al-Tanzĩl by Ibn Juzayy, al-Tahrĩr Wa Tanwĩr by Ibn' Asyur, Jami'ul Bayān by Al-Tabarĩ, Fĩ Zilāl al-Quran by Syed Qutb and Tafsĩr al-Munĩr by Wahbah Zuhailĩ. This study shows that two (2) of the five (5) (data) have shown the use of applying the explicitation strategy. It can reveal the implicit meaning that exists in the language style of majāz mursal from the relationship related to things that will happen (ĩtibar mā sayakūn) compared to the literal translation method.

Abstract:This study aims to elaborate Abdullah Saeed's hierarchy of values construction. The hierarchy of values is one of the most significant elements in Abdullah Saeed's contextual approach. This concept defines the basic requirements for contextual interpretation of the Qur’ān in a global-unrestricted and limited restricted context. In this way, interpreters can identify the level of urgency, complexity, and ambiguity of values in the verses of the Qur’ān. This study deploys a qualitative research method, with Abdullah Saeed's works as the main reference point, especially the one entitled as Interpreting the Qur’ān: Towards a Contemporary Approach and Reading the Qur’ān in the Twenty-First Century: A Contextualist Approach. Abdullah Saeed's hierarchy of values construction is then analyzed using philosophical hermeneutics by Hans-Georg Gadamer. The findings of this study, namely Abdullah Saeed's construction of a hierarchy of values cannot be separated from the Australian social and cultural context, which encouraged Saeed to understand Islam’s flexibly. Saeed formulates a value hierarchy into five categories, namely obligatory values, fundamental values, protective values, implementational values, and instructional values. Basically, the value hierarchy put forth is little more than a synthesis of various concepts initiated by early Muslim scholars such as Umar bin Khattab and medieval scholars such as al-Thufi, Ghazali, 'Izz al-Din bin 'Abd al-Salam, al- Shatibi, and Fazlur Rahman.

Abstract:Purpose: Reconsideration of stereotype gender of the ecofeminist paradigm which states that male hypermasculinity is one of the factors causing natural destruction. Theoretical framework: Carolyn Merchant explained that environmental damage has a correlation with men's domineering attitude toward women. The domineering attitude of men towards women affects the domineering attitude of men in exploiting the earth's resources. This is because both the earth and women have the same character, namely: silent, receptive, submissive, and surrender. Interestingly, in the research results of IPPC in 2019, the words of Merchant are not fully justified, this is because environmental damage is caused by modern human lifestyles that are not friendly to the environment. Likewise, Febriani rebutted the Merchant's statement with the verse of the Quran which stated that environmental damage was caused by "al-nās", namely humans who have matured socially, this editorial is mentioned for humans in general, both for men and women (Q.S. al-Rūm [30]: 41), Febriani also stated that character stereotypes for men and women are not found in the al-Qur’an. Method/design/approach: The method for Quranic interpretation using in this paper is maudu’i/thematic method. The authors also use qualitative observations to examine the concepts and categories in each subsequent event giving meaning to the research subject or observation. Result and conclution: The authors find a Quranic integral ecofeminism model which is understood in terms of “Environmental awareness and movement by involving men and women in a cooperative and complementary manner, by balancing the potential for physical and spiritual, rational and emotional, as individual, social and spiritual beings”. The Quranic integral ecofeminism model developed at the IIQ Takhassus Islamic boarding school, by providing awareness that feminine characters such as nurturing, loving, protecting, creative, and caring can be carried out by all parties in the campus ecosystem, both men and women. Likewise, masculine characters are needed in environmental maintenance such as visionary, consistent, wise and responsible. Research implication: The main contribution of this study is to reveal the insights of the al-Qur’an regarding the solution to the environmental damage problems if one of the causes is the gender stereotypes for men and women. In addition to interpreting verses, this study is equipped with psychological studies in building everyone’s balance of feminine and masculine character so that they can interact harmoniously and respecting humans and the environment. This study is expected to minimize the problems of environmental damage as well as gender stereotype. Originality/value: The concept of “Quranic Integral Ecofeminism” and the success of this concept which was implemented at IIQ Jakarta, Indonesia

Unsur-unsur yang diuraikan terdiri dari keragaman basis identitas sosial penulis tafsir Al-Qur’an, latar belakang keilmuan, bahasa serta aksara yang digunakan dalam penulisan tafsir Al-Qur’an, serta produk penafsiran. Dari sudut sejarah, basis identitas sosial penafsir di Indonesia cukup beragam: mulai dari ulama, akademisi, sastrawan, dan birokrat. Basis sosial penulisannya juga beragam: ada basis pesantren, akademik, dan masyarakat umum. Dari sisi aksara dan bahasa yang dipakai juga beragam: selain bahasa Indonesia dan aksara Latin, tafsir di Indonesia juga ditulis dengan bahasa dan aksara lokal, seperti aksara Jawi, Pegon, dan Lontara. Subjective Tendencies in Ibn Kaṡīr’s Exegesis: A Study of Narrative Selection and Interpretation in QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 21-22

Abstract:Ibn Kaṡīr’s approach to simplifying and expanding meaning through the citation of various riwayat suggests a subjective tendency in his interpretation. This study aims to uncover Ibn Kaṡīr’s subjective narratives by analyzing his selection and organization of riwāyah, comparing them to the interpretations of earlier scholars who followed similar criteria. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing Julia Kristeva's intertextual analysis model, and focuses on the exegesis of QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 21-22. The study reveals that Ibn Kaṡīr utilized mechanisms of transformation, transposition, and opposition in relation to previous interpretations when explaining these verses. He appears to have distorted the meanings of existing narrations to support his own views, which can be observed in the way he adjusted certain narrations for use in his interpretative process. The variety of narrations provided by earlier scholars is summarized by Ibn Kaṡīr to align with his intended meaning. His selective presentation of certain narrations over others that have equal interpretative potential results in an identity of meaning consistent with his inclination towards Ibn Taymīyah’s interpretative approach. However, unlike Ibn Taymīyah, Ibn Kaṡīr tends to rely on favored narrations to establish a singular meaning. This subjective tendency influences the formation of an interpretative model that emphasizes a subject-object relationship, wherein the Qur'an's own context is overshadowed by the interpreter's will as a subject.

Abstract:This paper aims to discuss Fred McGraw Donner’s thoughts on the Qur’an and the Qur’anic studies among non-Muslim scholars. By using a concept/thought studies research design and library research, this paper outlines Donner’s thoughts on the Qur'an, which is available on various works in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs, or review work. The findings of this paper claim that as historian Donner succeeded in presenting critical thoughts by not accepting traditional explanations at face value and not tending to reduce the Qur’an’s theological status and its historicity. On the issue of the historicity of the Qur’an, Donner has also offered three things or three steps that can be considered as a method in the search for the historical truth of the Qur’an. These three things are starting with the Qur’an text itself, comparing the hints inside it with sira literature, and looking at the religious phenomenon of the late antique Near East.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the educational approach in analyzing gender. The research method uses qualitative research with a library approach. For the approach to the interpretation of the verses of the Qur'an using thematic interpretations or maudu'i interpretations. Gender analysis is a tool for analyzing data and information in uncovering the positions, roles, functions and responsibilities of women and men, identifying influencing factors and impacts that occur as a result of acculturation in life and society. In the Qur'an to be able to analyze gender, you can use an approach by knowing sex and gender. Sex is the sexes of men and women, while gender is a concept used to interpret men and women in terms of roles and functions in the order of life. The framework used in gender analysis is using the Harvard framework (role dan economic approach), Moser Analysis (Development and Gender Approach), SWOT analysis (Strengthen, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat), Longwe Framework Analysis (Empowerment Framework), and Social Relations analysis (Social welfare)

Abstract:This article presents an analysis of the translation of the Qur'an into Palembang Language, with a focus on Surat An-Naziat. This research uses the perspective of Aesthetic Reception Theory to understand how Palembang language readers translate and receive this sacred text aesthetically. Through a qualitative approach, the author explores readers' aesthetic responses to this translation, covering elements such as the beauty of the language, appropriateness of the cultural context, and compatibility of the meaning with the original. The results of this analysis reveal how the Palembang language translation of Surat An-Naziat created a unique aesthetic experience for its readers, combining the richness of Palembang's language and local wisdom with the religious message of the Qur'an. This research makes an important contribution to understanding the process of translating the Qur'ān into local languages and explores the aesthetic aspects that play a role in fostering a deeper understanding of sacred texts in Palembang society.

Abstract:The research study aims at evaluating the Urdu translation of Qur’an by Pakistani scholars according to the latest assessment models of translation. As different Models of Assessment and Evaluation have been devised for the translations of various types of text such as literary, religious, and technical, hence translation is not mere transfer of words and meanings but the whole culture and connotations of the text need to be transferred. The research study is unique in that it deals with the evaluation of the holy Words of Allah, the Qur’an. To assess the Urdu Translations of the Qur’an, we have selected Julian House Model for Assessment and Evaluation. Furthermore, the study has been narrowed down to Surat Dhuha (93). Rationally, all assessment model cannot be applied for the evaluation of Qur’an Translation, so we have selected the most recent translations of the Qur’an rendered by Mufti Taqi Usmani, Dr. Tahirul Qadri,Pir Karam Shah Azhari, Muhammad Hussain Najfi, Hafiz Salahudin Yousaf, Abul Ala Moudoodi, and Dr. Israr Ahmad.
Faithfulness in the Translation of the Holy Quran: Revisiting the Skopos Theory

Abstract:Faithfulness and equivalence are two issues that gained the attention of many scholars in the translation field. It has always been presumed that a faithful translation is the one that could achieve equivalence at its maximum level. However, one theory of translation, namely, the Skopos theory, suggests that the aim or Skopos of a translation should be the target of a translator. Adopting such a theory, equivalence does not mean sameness; it rather means achieving the least dissimilarness. In relation to this, a translation of the Holy Quran is supposed to target conveying the primary meaning of the source text (ST) and its function rather than unachievably aiming at rendering its stylistic features. This study aims to highlight the problems faced in the translation of some verses of the Holy Quran and how they can be handled from a different theoretical and practical perspective and in regard to the Skopos theory. To this end, six verses ( ayahs) from the Chapter of the Heights and the Chapter of Cattle were purposively selected and analyzed. Frequent problems and loss in translation were found in the translations of Abdel Haleem, Pickthall, Shakir, and Sarwar. This study, guided by the Skopos theory with some modifications, suggests a new perspective in the translation of the Holy Quran. It also provides a more applicable definition of faithfulness in the translation of the Holy Quran.

Abstract:Abstract The fundamental objective of this research is to explicate the uniqueness of esoteric interpretation in The Study Quran: A New Translation and Commentary (2015) written by Seyyed Hossein Nasr and his team. This library research applies qualitative research methods and an interdisciplinary approach, that is Sufism science. The result unveils that esoteric interpretation tradition in the contemporary era tries not to reduce the esoteric meaning of the Quran to Sufism authority and that every individual has the possibility to interact with the Quran’s esoteric meaning. The uniqueness of moderate esoteric interpretation in The Study Quran helps find new meanings of the Quran as a contemporary perspective in interpreting a text.

Abstract:This study aims to analyze the impact of the language used in the Quran on Islamic discourse, using qualitative research methods and content analysis of Quranic verses and scholarly literature. The study finds that the Quranic language's unique literary style and linguistic features contribute to its authority and persuasiveness, shaping Islamic discourse over time. Rhetorical devices, such as repetition and parallelism, add to the text's effectiveness. The study highlights the importance of understanding the Quranic language and its impact on Islamic theology, jurisprudence, and ethics, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary research. By analyzing the linguistic and literary features of the Quran, scholars can gain a deeper understanding of the text's meaning and message and appreciate its continued relevance in contemporary times. This study contributes to the broader understanding of the role of language in shaping religious discourse and interpretation.

Abstract:Transformers have shown their effectiveness in various machine learning tasks. However, their “black box” nature often obscures their decision-making processes, particularly in Arabic, posing a barrier to their broader adoption and trust. This study delves into the interpretability of three Arabic transformer models that have been fine-tuned for semantic search tasks. Through a focused case study, we employ these models for retrieving information from the Holy Qur'an, leveraging Explainable AI (XAI) techniques—namely, LIME and SHAP—to shed light on the decision-making processes of these models. The paper underscores the unique challenges posed by the Qur’anic text and demonstrates how XAI can significantly boost the transparency and interpretability of semantic search systems for such complex text. Our findings reveal that applying XAI techniques to Arabic transformer models for Qur'anic content not only demystifies the models internal mechanics but also makes the insights derived from them more accessible to a broader audience. This contribution is twofold: It enriches the field of XAI within the context of Arabic semantic search and illustrates the utility of these techniques in deepening our understanding of intricate religious documents. By providing this nuanced approach to the interpretability of Arabic transformer models in the domain of semantic search, our study underscores the potential of XAI to bridge the gap between advanced machine learning technologies and the nuanced needs of users seeking to explore complex texts like the Holy Qur'an. An Ongoing Project on Assessing the English Translation of Complete Taḍmīn (Implication of Meaning) in the Qur’an: The Seventh Sūrah (Chapter) Al-Aʕrāf

Abstract:This paper is a part of an in-progress project which investigates four English translations of complete taḍmīn in the whole Qur’an. Taḍmīn involves the presence of an explicit verb, noun or adjective, followed by an explicit preposition with which it is not standardly collocated, and the expression of additional meaning through an implicit verb, noun or adjective, which standardly collocates with the explicit preposition. This study is an extension of Nouraldeen (2020; 2021a; 2021b; 2022a ; 2022b), which have investigated six chapters so far. Using the four-element model that was put forward in Nourladeen (2020, p. 240) and modified twice in Nouraldeen (2021a, p. 293; and 2022b, p. 144), this paper proceeds by discussing, analysing and assessing four English translations of complete taḍmīn in the seventh sūrah (chapter) al-Aʕrāf. The importance, and also the challenge, of complete taḍmīn lies in its invisibility to the translator and its absence in English. The theoretical framework of this study is established within the theories of Vinay and Darbelnet (1995, p. 342) and Dickins et al. (2017, pp 48-56), which suggest ‘explicitation’ of the ST, leading to ‘loss’ and ‘gain’ in the TT. Textual analysis is applied to the ST and the TT based on two sources and three dictionaries. None of the four translators are aware of taḍmīn in translating the Qur’an, except for Abdel Haleem, Hammad and Khattab in āyah 1, who translate the four elements of complete taḍmīn, and Abdel Haleem in translating āyah 5. The Qur’anic style should be taken into consideration when translating the Qur’an unless the translation would sound awkward in English.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of Ḥadīth, with their narrative background in Islamic tradition, would require the application of the principle of asbāb al-wurūd (discerning the specific circumstances for the reason or purpose of revealing Ḥadīth), an approach which gives detailed information about narrated Ḥadīth. Having such a comprehension about the essence of the message of Ḥadīth could enhance the understanding of Muslim audiences and followers. This situation will indirectly provide a stepping stone to comprehensive information to prevent misunderstanding the message of Islamic religion. Taking due cognizance of these circumstances could potentially result in preventing actions of religious radicalism, which might result from obtaining religious messages through a solely textual approach. In this situation, the sufficient application of asbāb al-wurūd plays a significant role in leading an order to achieve the contextual comprehension of the religious message of Ḥadīth. This paper aims to examine the significance of asbāb al-wurūd in understanding the contextual meaning of Ḥadīth beyond a textual basis. The findings reveal that the contextual elaboration of the message of Ḥadīth could be adapted in a proper way, in which its textual comprehension could be elaborated on clearly through detailing its asbāb al-wurūd, one method of which is to refer to Muslim scholars together with schools of thought in order to clearly attain the message of Islamic religion. Furthermore, this article attempts to address such a way of bringing about textual understanding to the context to assist in adapting the contextual significance of a clear and detailed comprehension of Ḥadīth. The significance of this study is to contribute to providing a detailed explanation on both text and context in seeking for clarity on the Ḥadīths’ information and message with a clear basis as a safeguard against extremist interpretations of Islam.
