Abstract:Properly addressing the degradation of railway elements is an important topic in rail infrastructure asset management. One of the dominant mechanisms is the wear of railway tracks. Material loss in the railhead alters the shape of rail profiles which changes the location of the wheel contact points and leads to instability of vehicles, especially during curving behaviour. This can eventually cause the derailment of trains. Rail grinding is then performed to restore the shape of rail profiles and ensure dynamic stability. This maintenance activity is part of either scheduled or reactive maintenance. Predicting rail wear beforehand can assist in properly scheduling the maintenance intervals. Hence, Infrastructure Managers (IMs) are looking for rail wear prediction tools that can support the maintenance planning and optimization based on the usage profile of railway tracks. In scientific literature, a relatively limited amount of attention has been paid to rail wear prediction as compared to wheel wear prediction. This is due to the fact that the wear rate of wheels is higher. Hence, extensive descriptions on the wheel wear prediction procedure can be found in literature [1 Zobory I. Prediction of wheel/rail profile wear. The amount of rail wear was overestimated when compared to field measurements and the authors, therefore, suggested to proportionally scale down the wear coefficients. It should be noted that all the methods developed so far propose a numerically expensive procedure for the wheel/rail wear prediction. This makes existing methods unsuitable for application as a real-time prognostic tool by IMs.Computational time can be reduced considerably when predefined relations between wear rate and operating parameters are established. This relation can be obtained by performing a large set of numerical experiments that covers various scenarios and by using regression analysis to find meta-models representing the relation between input and output.
