Abstract:Electrocatalytic ammonia conversion under ambient atmosphere is crucial to mimic the nature’s nitrogen cycle. But currently it is always interrupted by the HER process which is more competitive. Herein, we tactically cultivate the incompletely etched MXene based heterostructure catalysts whose composition can be tuned through regulation of the LiF percentage in the etching agent. The surface potential difference is ~40 mV, indicating the electron can be readily transferred from MAX to MXene across the interfaces, which is favorable for nitrogen fixation, with an outstanding FE of 36.9%. DFT calculations reveal that the NRR follows a catalysis pathway optimization, with reaction intermediates alternatively absorbed on both sides of MAX and MXene surfaces. The RDS * NH → * NH 2 possesses an energy barrier of 0.96 eV following the associative distal mechanism. This work opens up a new means of heterostructured catalyst to balance electrical conductivity and catalytic activity in electrocatalysis.
