Abstract:The current efficiency of NH3 electrosynthesis from N2 and H2O is ultralow as a result of poor selectivity in most catalysts. Here, we demonstrate that under ambient conditions, MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets attached to a vertically aligned metal host can achieve a high faradic efficiency (5.78%) at an ultralow potential for NH3 electrosynthesis. On the basis of experimental and theoretical evidence, the basal plane of MXene is relatively inert, and its higher activity is related to a greater number of exposed edge sites. This work elucidates that significantly improved selectivity of NH3 electrosynthesis can be achieved by tuning active sites and retarding hydrogen evolution activity. The proposed strategy provides a new opportunity to optimize the surface properties of 2D catalysts for efficient N2 fixation under ambient conditions.
Regulating Intermediate Adsorption and H2O Dissociation on a Diatomic Catalyst to Promote Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of nitrate (NO3-) is an efficient approach to reduce NO3- pollutants and it offers a promising alternative for sustainable NH3 synthesis. However, this process is limited by the mismatched reaction kinetics of NO3- discharge, active hydrogen (H*) formation via water dissociation, and stepwise hydrogenation processes. Herein, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we screened a library of Cu-M diatomic catalysts coordinated with a N doped carbon matrix (Cu-M-N-C, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Zn) by balancing N-containing intermediate adsorption and H2O dissociation barriers. Among these catalysts, Cu-Fe-N-C demonstrates the best performance with a NH3 yield rate of 1.22 mmol h(-1) cm(-2) and a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) for NH3 synthesis of 95.08% at -0.8 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, in which diatomic sites facilitate the first NO3- discharge step to generate adsorbed *NO3 and lower the energy barriers of the following hydrogenation/dehydration steps. More importantly, the incorporated Fe sites could promote the H2O dissociation, providing a large supply of H* for the deep hydrogenation of N-containing intermediates. This work reveals the tunable bonding interactions of diatomic sites with multiple reactant/intermediates, offering a new avenue for rational design of highly efficient atomic-level dispersed catalysts for both NO3- abatement and NH3 synthesis.
Promoting N2 Electroreduction to Ammonia by Fluorine-Terminating Ti3C2Tx MXene

Abstract:Two-dimensional MXene-based materials are potential of presenting unique catalytic performances of electrocatalytic reactions. The surface functionalization of MXene-based catalysts is attractive for developing efficient electrocatalysts toward nitrogen reduction reaction. Herein, we reported a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with a medium density of surface functionalized fluorine terminal groups, as an excellent N 2 reduction reaction electrocatalyst with enhanced adsorption and activation of N 2 . The Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene catalyst showed a production rate of ammonia as 2.81 × 10 –5 μmol·s −1 ·cm −2 , corresponding to a partial current density of 18.3 μA·cm −2 and a Faradic efficiency of 7.4% at − 0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in aqueous solutions at ambient conditions, substantially exceeding similar Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene catalysts but with higher or lower densities of surface fluorine terminal groups. Our work suggests the capability of developing surface functionalization toolkit for enhancing electrochemical catalytic activities of two-dimensional MXene-based materials.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO3RR) to synthesize ammonia (NH3) provides a competitive manner for carbon neutrality and decentralized NH3 synthesis. Atomically precise nanoclusters, as an advantageous platform for investigating the NO3RR mechanisms and actual active sites, remain largely underexplored due to the poor stability. Herein, we report a (NH4)9[Ag9(mba)9] nanoclusters (Ag9 NCs) loaded on Ti3C2 MXene (Ag9/MXene) for highly efficient NO3RR performance towards ambient NH3 synthesis with improved stability in neutral medium. The composite structure of MXene and Ag9 NCs enables a tandem catalysis process for nitrate reduction, significantly increasing the selectivity and FE of NH3. Besides, compared with individual Ag9 NCs, Ag9/MXene has better stability with the current density performed no decay after 108 hours of reaction. This work provides a strategy for improving the catalytic activity and stability of atomically precise metal NCs, expanding the mechanism research and application of metal NCs.

Abstract:NO 3 − is a common water pollutant that can serve as a potential nitrogen source for electrocatalytic NH 3 production. However, an efficient and complete removal of low NO 3 − concentrations remains a challenge. Fe 1 Cu 2 @MXene bimetallic catalysts were constructed on two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene carriers via a simple solution-based synthetic method and used for the electrocatalytic reduction of NO 3 − . The combination of the rich functional groups, high electronic conductivity on the MXene surface, and the synergistic effect between the Cu and Fe sites enabled the composite to effectively catalyse NH 3 synthesis, with a 98% conversion of NO 3 − in 8 h and a selectivity for NH 3 of up to 99.6%. In addition, Fe 1 Cu 2 @MXene showed excellent environmental and cyclic stability at various pH values and temperatures over multiple (14) cycles. Semiconductor analysis techniques and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the synergistic effect provided by the dual active sites of the bimetallic catalyst enabled fast electron transport. This study provides new insights into the synergistic promotion of NO 3 − reduction reactions using bimetals.

Abstract:MXene basal planes are generally considered catalytically inert, due to the passivation by inactive surface groups. However, theoretical calculation predicates that MXene basal planes can become active by tuning its terminal groups. The above understandings are ambiguous on whether the MXene basal planes are indeed electrocatalytically active, and in turn what are the true active sites on MXene. Herein, we functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MXene by introducing terminal oxygen groups to reveal the active sites and probe the reaction mechanism for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (eNO 3 - RR). On the basis of the data presented, the in situ transformed surface hydroxyl groups were identified as a new active site for nitrate reduction. A novel reaction mechanism involving hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) between nitrate and the -OH groups on the Ti 3 C 2 MXene basal plane was proposed, which adequately explained the high applied potentials and low selectivity for HER on the OH-terminated Ti 3 C 2 MXene during eNO 3 - RR. This hydrogen-bonding-mediated process is likely applicable to a wide range of other materials and reactions.

Abstract:The constant downscaling of catalysts to atomic catalyst with maximized atomic utilization efficiency provides a way for cost-efficient catalysis using a minimum amount of metals. However, the current studies are insufficient in the understanding of feasibility and mechanism of atomic catalyst on nitrate electroreduction toward ammonia (NRA). Herein, using first-principles calculations, we systematically explore the NRA mechanism of MXenes-based atomic catalysts TM n @M 3 C 2 O 2 (TM = non-noble transition metal; M = Ti, V, Cr, Nb and Mo; n = 1, 2, and 3, which represents single-, double-, and triple-atom catalysts on MXenes). Nb 3 - and Nb 2 -modified V 3 C 2 O 2 (Nb 3 @V 3 C 2 O 2 and Nb 2 @V 3 C 2 O 2 ) shows high NRA activity with low potential determination steps (−0.22 and −0.26 eV, respectively) and suppression to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The doping of Nb atoms causes a negatively upshift of the MXenes d-band center and creates more electron-deficient sites, which regulates the strong adsorption of nitrate and weaken the adsorption of *NH x (x = 1–3), thereby facilitating easy deoxidation and hydrogenation. This study not only theoretically verified the feasibility of atomic catalyst for NRA, but also provided a new idea for rational design of MXenes-based non-noble metal atomic catalyst.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic NO reduction reaction (NORR) towards NH3 has attracted increasing attentions as a promising strategy to cope with both NH3 synthesis and NO removal challenges. However, the catalytic efficiency is seriously impeded by the intrinsic linear scaling relations between adsorption energies of NORR intermediates. Herein, we propose a design principle to break the linear scaling relationships of key intermediates in NORR for promoted reaction thermodynamics via modifying the surface functionalization of MXene. Our calculation results reveal that surface functionalization can remarkably reduce the limiting potentials of NORR on MXenes from -1.09 V (bare Ti2C) to -0.08 V (Ti2CS2) and -0.14 V (Ti2CO2) by decreasing the free energy difference of rate-determining step (*NH2+H++e- = *NH3). Then, we highlighted that modifying surface terminations on MXene can selectively tune the adsorption strength of *NH2 and *NH3, thus breaking the linear scaling relations between their adsorption energies. Further analysis on charge difference and density of states illuminate that the modulation mechanism is originated from surface termination induced tunable electric properties of MXene. Furthermore, Ti2CS2 and Ti2CO2 MXenes possess superior selectivity towards NH3 by inhibiting the competing production of H2. Our work not only provide a deeper insight into the essential effect of surface functionalization on the catalytic activities of MXenes, but also propose general design principles for glorious-performance NORR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is considered a promising strategy for ammonia synthesis and nitrate removal, in which catalyst development is crucial. Herein, a series of bimetal (Co and Cu) anchoring porous MXene nanosheets (CoxCuy@PM) catalysts were prepared by combining etching and reduction strategy. On the one hand, Cu and Co bimetals provided tandem catalytic active sites for NO3RR. On the other hand, the in‐plane PM exhibited good electrical conductivity and multiple transport pathways. Consequently, the optimized Co7Cu3@PM catalyst achieved a high ammonia yield of 7.43 mg h−1 mg cat.−1 and an excellent Faraday efficiency (FE) of 95.9%. The mechanism of NO3RR was investigated by analyzing electrolysis products and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the Co7Cu3@PM based ZnNO3− battery exhibited the superior power density of 5.59 mW cm−2 and an NH3 FE of 92.3%. This work presents an effective strategy to design MXene‐based high‐performance NO3RR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:To achieve the energy-effective ammonia (NH3) production via the ambient-condition electrochemical N-2 reduction reaction (NRR), it is vital to ingeniously design an efficient electrocatalyst assembling the features of abundant surface deficiency, good dispersibility, high conductivity, and large surface specific area (SSA) via a simple way. Inspired by the fact that the MXene contains thermodynamically metastable marginal transition metal atoms, the oxygen-vacancy-rich TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) in situ grown on the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (TiO2/Ti3C2Tx) are prepared via a one-step ethanolthermal treatment of the Ti3C2Tx MXene. The oxygen vacancies act as the main active sites for the NH3 synthesis. The highly conductive interior untreated Ti3C2Tx nanosheets could not only facilitate the electron transport but also avoid the self-aggregation of the TiO2 NPs. Meanwhile, the TiO2 NPs generation could enhance the SSA of the Ti3C2Tx in return. Accordingly, the as-prepared electrocatalyst exhibits an NH3 yield of 32.17 mu g h(-1) mg(-1) cat. at -0.55 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a remarkable Faradaic efficiency of 16.07% at -0.45 V versus RHE in 0.1 m HCl, placing it as one of the most promising NRR electrocatalysts. Moreover, the density functional theory calculations confirm the lowest NRR energy barrier (0.40 eV) of TiO2 (101)/Ti3C2Tx compared with Ti3C2Tx or TiO2 (101) alone.

Abstract:The discharge of large amounts of industrial wastewater and waste residue in industry and agriculture can lead to a continuous increase in nitrate concentration in groundwater, causing pollution of water resources. Currently, there is an urgent need for an efficient catalyst for nitrate reduction. This article analyzed the performance of Co doped Ti3C2 mxenes composites (Co-Ti3C2) electrodes for reducing nitrate, and summarized the possible pathways for reducing nitrate to synthesize ammonia through theoretical calculations. In the experimental section, Co-Ti3C2 was successfully prepared by the hydrothermal method. Electrochemical experiments were conducted in a mixed electrolyte of 0.5 mol·L-1 Na2SO4 solution and 0.05 mol·L-1 NaNO3 solution. The results showed that the Co-Ti3C2 exhibited considerable long-term stability in the nitrate electrochemical reduction reaction (NITRR) at −0.55 V (VS. RHE) under mild environmental conditions, with an ammonia yield of 102.06 mg·h−1·mg−1, the Faraday efficiency (FE) of 50.9 %, and a slope of 102.06 mV·dec-1 for Tafel. The maximum yield at −0.95 V (VS. RHE) was 208.5 mg·h−1·mg−1, with FE of 66.8 %. The free energy diagram of Co-Ti3C2 was calculated using density functional theory, indicating that surface Co plays a crucial role in improving the catalytic activity of Ti3C2 materials. This work provided a feasible strategy for designing more efficient MXene-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Highlights Oxygen-coordinated single-atom Mn catalyst was fabricated via introducing oxygen functional groups rich bacterial cellulose as the adsorption regulator through a combined impregnation–pyrolysis–etching synthetic route. Mn–O–C as the electrocatalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity toward ammonia synthesis with a maximum NH 3 yield rate of 1476.9 ± 62.6 μg h − 1 cm − 2 at − 0.7 V (vs. RHE) and a faradaic efficiency of 89.0 ± 3.8% at − 0.5 V (vs. RHE) under ambient conditions. Electrocatalytic mechanism of Mn–(O–C 2 ) 4 site for nitrate reduction reaction is unveiled by a combination of in situ spectroscopy characterization and computational study.

Abstract:The electroreduction of nitrate to ammonia under ambient temperature and pressure driven by renewable energy provides an attractive green alternative for ammonia synthesis. However, it is difficult to selectively convert nitrate into ammonia without other side products for long-term stable operation. In this manuscript, atomicallydispersed Cu-N4 active sites anchored on zeolitic imidazolate frameworks with porous N-doped carbon (Cu-NC) were designed to promote Faraday efficiency (FE) and operational stability for the electrocatalytic conversion of nitrate to ammonia. Density functional theory calculations clarify that the adsorption of NO3- at the Cu-N4 site is thermodynamically favorable and the conversion of *NO to *N is the limiting step. Electron microscopy and Xray absorption spectroscopy results reveal that Cu is uniformly distributed as individual atoms on N-doped carbon surfaces, while the coordination structure of Cu in Cu-NC catalyst is Cu-N4. The Cu-NC catalyst with excellent activity and stability increases the ammonia FE to 82.1 % at -0.89 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and yield rate to 4731.0 mu g h-1 mgcat.-1 at -1.09 V vs RHE, respectively.

Abstract:In this work, we construct Cu@ZrO2 heterogenous structure as a new catalyst for nitrate reduction to ammonia and such catalyst achieves a large NH3 yield of 15.4 mg h-1 mg-1cat. and a high Faradaic efficiency of 67.6% at -0.7 V vs RHE in 0.1 M PBS with 0.1 M NaNO3, which also shows excellent electrochemical durability and structural stability. Theoretical calculations reveal extremely low adsorption energy of -1.54 eV at Cu surfaces and Cu can significantly reduce the applied overpotential and correspondingly promote the catalytic activity.

Abstract:To date, the application of electrochemical nitrogen fixation into ammonia is severely hindered by the deficiency of high-performance electrocatalysts. In this paper, a facile approach is proposed for the preparation of MXene/Mn3O4 composite catalyst, where Mn3O4 nanoparticles are anchored tightly on the MXene nanosheets through van der Waals interactions. The obtained composite catalyst exhibiting powerful synergetic effect is able to provide abundant active sites for nitrogen reduction reaction. The introduction of MXene nanosheets dramatically improves the N2 adsorption and charge transfer. When operated in 0.1 M Na2SO4 aqueous media, MXene/Mn3O4 achieves a proper Faradaic efficiency of 5.51% and superior NH3 yield rate of 25.95 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 at −0.5 V under ambient conditions, outperforming either of individual components. Notably, this composite catalyst delivers superb stability, durability and selectivity as well.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical conversion of nitrate to ammonia offers an efficient approach to reducing nitrate pollutants and a potential technology for low-temperature and low-pressure ammonia synthesis. However, the process is limited by multiple competing reactions and NO 3 − adsorption on cathode surfaces. Here, we report a Fe/Cu diatomic catalyst on holey nitrogen-doped graphene which exhibits high catalytic activities and selectivity for ammonia production. The catalyst enables a maximum ammonia Faradaic efficiency of 92.51% (−0.3 V(RHE)) and a high NH 3 yield rate of 1.08 mmol h −1 mg −1 (at − 0.5 V(RHE)). Computational and theoretical analysis reveals that a relatively strong interaction between NO 3 − and Fe/Cu promotes the adsorption and discharge of NO 3 − anions. Nitrogen-oxygen bonds are also shown to be weakened due to the existence of hetero-atomic dual sites which lowers the overall reaction barriers. The dual-site and hetero-atom strategy in this work provides a flexible design for further catalyst development and expands the electrocatalytic techniques for nitrate reduction and ammonia synthesis.

Abstract:Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia is considered to be a promising approach due to its environmentally friendly process, great effort has been made for improving the catalyst to obtain satisfying catalytic activity and selectivity. Herein, we attempted to prepare the MOF-based derivative Cu/Cu2O@C via the wet method for N2 and NO3− reduction to synthesize ammonia. For the nitrogen reduction, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited an excellent ammonia yield (6.02 μmol∙cm−2∙h−1) and Faraday efficiency (FE, 10.48%) at − 0.5 V. While the overall yield of catalytic nitrate reduction reached 158.66 μmol∙cm−2∙h−1 and the FE reached 76.97% owing to higher solubility and a better conversion pathway. This is considerably higher than the yield of nitrogen reduction while preventing the energy consumption of reforming hydrogen production. This work helps to promote the development of artificial ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions.
