Abstract:Because of the deep and zigzag microporous structure, porous carbon materials exhibit inferior capacitive performance and sluggish electrochemical kinetics for supercapacitor electrode materials. Herein, a single-step carbonation and activation approach was utilized to synthesize coal-based porous carbon with an adjustable pore structure, using CaO as a hard template, KOH as an activator, and oxidized coal as precursors to carbon. The obtained sample possesses an interconnected and hierarchical porous structure, higher SSA (1060 m2 g-1), suitable mesopore volume (0.25 cm3 g-1), and abundant surface heteroatomic functional groups. Consequently, the synthesized carbon exhibits an exceptionally high specific capacitance of 323 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, along with 80.3% capacitance retention at 50 A g-1. The assembled two-electrode configuration demonstrates a remarkable capacitance retention of up to 95% and achieves Coulombic efficiency of nearly 100% with 10,000 cycles in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the Zn-ion hybrid capacitor also exhibits a specific capacity of up to 139.1 mA h g-1 under conditions of 0.2 A g-1. This work offers a simple method in preparation of coal-based porous carbon with controllable pore structure.

Abstract:Carbon materials with rational pore structure have attracted tremendous attention in high-performance supercapacitor applications. However, designing and constructing such carbon materials with excellent performances via a simple and low-cost route is still a challenge. Herein, the nitrogen self-doped oxygen-rich hierarchical porous carbons (OTSx-PC) derived from coal tar pitch are constructed via a facile strategy of air pre-oxidation-activation. The air pre-oxidation treatment can effectively regulate the small-sized mesopore structure (2-4 nm) of samples. The optimal OTS350-PC sample exhibits a high specific capacitance of 298 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, and delivers a high energy density of 14.9 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 0.15 kW kg-1 with remarkable cycling stability in KOH aqueous electrolyte. This excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to its ultrahigh specific surface area (SSA, 2941 m2 g-1), huge total pore volume (Vt, 1.9 cm3 g-1), rational pore structure and reasonable heteroatom configuration, which ensure sufficient charge storage, rapid electrolyte ions diffusion, as well as the contributed pseudocapacitance. This research not only offers a facile route for high-value utilization of coal tar pitch but also provides the cost-effective and excellent porous carbons for supercapacitor with high performance.

Abstract:A template-free strategy was designed to prepare hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) using fluid catalytic cracking oil modified a coal tar pitch (CTP). The resulting HPCs possess large specific surface areas, reasonable pore size distributions, and wrinkled structures, which could improve the overall electrochemical performance. They exhibit a specific capacitance value of 329 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and still maintain 220 F g−1 at 20 A g−1, manifesting the remarkable rate capability. Additionally, the assembled symmetrical supercapacitor delivers a highest energy density of 23.6 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 500 W kg−1 and outstanding cycle stability of 92.8% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles. This work paves a new way to fabricate advanced carbon materials from low-cost CTP and provides a promising approach for value-added utilization of CTP.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Construction of hierarchically porous carbon electrode materials is considered as an efficient strategy for improving the performance of supercapacitors. Nevertheless, how to precisely control the pore structure for preferable improvement the capacitance performance and fabricate in a cost-efficient way is still a scientific challenge. In this paper, an industrial by-product of coal tar pitch is used as precursor to prepare interconnected hierarchically porous carbons, with another domestic waste of eggshell as a pore-forming template and an inner-activator, combined with KOH in-situ activation. The as-prepared porous carbons exhibit large specific surface area ( S BET , 1398–2103 cm 2 g −1 ), well-developed interconnected hierarchically architecture, and excellent electrochemical performance. Among them, the optimal TS-PCE-4 based symmetric supercapacitor possesses a high capacitance of 238 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 with an excellent rate capability, exhibits long cycle stability with capacitance retention of 95.85 % after 10,000 cycles, and delivers energy densities of 8.27–5.47 Wh kg −1 at power density in the range of 125–4925 W kg −1 in 6 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. This work offers a facile and low-cost route to construct interconnected hierarchically porous carbons for energy storage devices.

Abstract:The surface properties and the hierarchical pore structure of carbon materials are important for their actual application in supercapacitors. It is important to pursue an integrated approach that is both easy and cost-effective but also challenging. Herein, coal-based hierarchical porous carbon with nitrogen doping was prepared by a simple dual template strategy using coal as the carbon precursor. The hierarchical pores were controlled by incorporating different target templates. Thanks to high conductivity, large electrochemically active surface area (483 m2 g−1), hierarchical porousness with appropriate micro-/mesoporous channels, and high surface nitrogen content (5.34%), the resulting porous carbon exhibits a high specific capacitance in a three-electrode system using KOH electrolytes, reaching 302 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and 230 F g−1 at 50 A g−1 with a retention rate of 76%. At 250 W kg−1, the symmetrical supercapacitor assembled at 6 M KOH shows a high energy density of 8.3 Wh kg−1, and the stability of the cycling is smooth. The energy density of the symmetric supercapacitor assembled under ionic liquids was further increased to 48.3 Wh kg−1 with a power output of 750 W kg−1 when the operating voltage was increased to 3 V. This work expands the application of coal-based carbon materials in capacitive energy storage.

Abstract:In this work, soluble portions obtained from the co-thermal dissolution (CTD) of rice husk (RH) and coal were used as the carbon precursor for the synthesis of 3D hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs). The electrochemical properties of HPCs were tested in supercapacitors as working electrode. HPC-RH3/1 showed a specific capacitance of 352 F/g at 1 A/g and a retention rate of 100% after 10,000 cycles. The composition of the carbon precursors is a key factor determining the characteristics of carbon-based materials. The detailed composition of carbon precursors was obtained by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and Orbitrap MS. The N-containing organic matters in carbon precursors can improve conductivity and the O-containing compounds can contribute to pseudocapacitance. According to the MS analysis, the high content of compounds with unsaturated structures was of benefit to excellent electrochemical properties. The study on the relationships between molecular compositions of carbon precursors and electrochemical characteristics can give a direction of selection and optimization of carbon precursors, which further improve the electrochemical performance of carbon materials.

Abstract:Hierarchical micro/mesoporous carbons were prepared using ZnO nanoparticles as hard templates and a petroleum industrial-residual pitch as the carbon source via a solvent-free process. The ZnO templates can be easily removed using HCl(aq), thereby avoiding limitations present in conventional porous silica templating approaches that require highly corrosive HF(aq) for template removal. Notably, the proposed solvent-free synthetic method from low-cost pitch to high-value porous carbons is a friendly process with respect to our overexploited environment. With the combination of ZnO nanoparticles and pitch, the surface area (76-548 m2 g-1) of the resultant mesoporous carbons increases with an increase in the weight ratios of ZnO to pitch. Furthermore, the hierarchical micro/mesoporous carbons with a large surface area (854-1979 m2 g-1) can be feasibly fabricated by only adding an appropriate amount of an activating agent. Meanwhile, N-doped hierarchical porous carbons can be achieved by carbonizing the blend of these materials with melamine. For supercapacitor application, the resultant carbons exhibit a high capacitance up to 200.5 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1 using LiClO4/PC as the electrolyte in a symmetrical two-electrode cell. More importantly, the coin-cell supercapacitor based on porous carbons achieved a capacitance of 94 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1 and 63% capacitance retention at 500 mV s-1, thereby holding the potential for commercialization.

Abstract:With the development of society, there exists a great need for symmetric supercapacitors that can be charged and discharged in long cycles, which puts forward higher requirements for symmetric supercapacitor materials. Porous carbon supercapacitors have attracted much attention because of their excellent performance, yet it is still difficult to build a structure with hierarchical pore carbon. Here, we report a new idea of constructing hierarchically porous carbon materials (HPC) by an in-situ blowing-assisted high-temperature etching method, and the pore structure can be tuned to a certain extent. It has a large number of meso-microporous structure with three-dimensional macro- interconnections, which is confirmed by electron microscope and nitrogen isothermal adsorption experiments. As an electrode material for supercapacitors, the optimized HPC exhibits an outstanding rate capability of 255.5 F·g-1 at a current density of 3 A·g-1 and 201.6 F·g-1 at a current density of 10 A·g-1 as well as an excellent cycle stability (capacity retention of 97.5% after 5000 cycles). The excellent performance originates from the favorable pore configuration that the macro-mesopores effectively accelerate ion transport and the micropores' interface store a large amount of charge. This work offering a new synthesis strategy and a new pore configuration prototype for the preparation of high-performance symmetric supercapacitor devices.

Abstract:Carbon materials with hierarchical porous architecture and high conductivity are highly desired for supercapacitors (SCs), but there is a daunting challenge to prepare them via an ecofriendly and economic route. Herein, a co-activation/graphitization strategy with the aid of KOH and Ni is proposed to fabricate the N/O self-doped hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs), employing coal tar pitch (CTP) modified by fluid catalytic cracking oil as a low-cost precursor. The as-prepared HPCs with a large specific surface area of 2254 m2 g−1 and appropriate heteroatom doping exhibit a specific capacitance of 368 F g−1 of specific capacitance at 0.5 A g−1 and still retain 270 F g−1 at 20 A g−1 (73.3% capacitance retention rate) in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Besides, the symmetrical SC achieves a maximum energy density of 27.45 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 253 W kg−1 in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. This work designs a novel route for preparing electrode materials with excellent electrochemical performance and provides a feasible way for the value-added utilization of low-cost CTP.

Abstract:Porous activated carbon is widely used as electrode material for supercapacitors due to a series of characteristics such as its superior electrical conductivity, low preparation cost and no pollution to the environment, especially it has a good prospect in the application of electrode material for double layer supercapacitors. In this work, a series of porous carbon materials were prepared by KOH activation method using medium and low temperature coal pitch as raw material. Studies have shown that coal pitch contains a large number of hydrophilic functional groups such as -OH and -COOH and nitrogenous functional groups such as -NO2. The former can improve the dispersion of coal pitch in aqueous solution, while the latter can be used as a nitrogen precursor in the preparation of carbon materials. The results show that the porous carbon materials activated by KOH have the structural characteristics of coexistence of graphite microcrystals and amorphous carbon. The surface of the carbon material is rich in microporous structure and also has good electrochemical properties. The experimental results showed that the porous carbon exhibited excellent capacitive properties (210 F/g with 10.1 A/g) and good cycling stability under low temperature activation conditions at 500°C. In addition, the supercapacitor assembled from porous carbon has an energy density of 7.15 Wh/kg at a current density of 0.1A/g in 6 M KOH electrolyte.

Abstract:Tailoring the porous structure of carbon materials is one essential approach to improve the energy storage performance of carbon-based electrode materials. Herein, hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) with different meso-structure are synthesized via a one-pot pyrolysis process with SiO2 and ZnCl2 as template and activator, respectively. The energy storage capacities of the obtained HPC samples are investigated as bi-functional electrode both for supercapacitor and LIBs. The results show that different meso-structure of HPCs can effectively affect the energy storage performance. In the range of 15 ∼ 50 nm, smaller size of mesopore can result better electrochemical performance of HPCs. And the optimized HPC sample (HPC-15) manifests high specific capacitance of 432F g−1 and good cyclic stability in the supercapacitor application. When used as anode of LIBs, the HPC-15 presents a high capacity of 820 mAh g−1. In addition, COMSOL simulation is employed to study the effect of pore structure on mass transfer during electrochemical process. The HPC-15 is calculated to have the highest total porosity (εp) and effective diffusivity of K+ (De = 6.776 × 10-10 m2 s−1), thus leading to its best electrochemical performance.

Abstract:A series of carbon precursors were obtained via the co-thermal dissolution of coal and wheat straw (WS) with different weight ratios. Three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon (HPC X ) materials were prepared from the carbon precursors. Among the porous carbon materials, HPC1/3 (WS:coal = 1:3 in weight) showed a specific capacitance of 384 F g–1 at 1 A g–1 in 6 M KOH and a good retention capability of 92% at a current density of 10 A g–1. A symmetrical supercapacitor was further fabricated using HPC1/3 for both electrodes. The supercapacitor exhibited an excellent cycle lifetime, retaining 98% of specific capacitance after 10 000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of HPC1/3 is closely related to the corresponding composition of the carbon precursor. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and Orbitrap mass spectrometry were used to reveal the detailed composition of carbon precursors at the molecular level. The N-containing and O-containing compounds in carbon precursors are helpful for the enhancement of capacity, surface polarity, and electrical conductivity. Aromatic compounds with a high unsaturation in a carbon precursor contribute to the high specific capacitance and cycling stability.

Abstract:Porous carbon plays an important role in supercapacitors with its favorable electrical conductivity, highly porous structure and superior chemical stability. However, the deep and tortuous ultramicropores in porous carbon greatly restricts the transport and transfer of electrolyte ions, resulting in the inferior electrochemical performance. Therefore, we propose a facile and green chemical activation method that uses KHCO 3 and Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 ·2H 2 O as dual activators to modulate the porous carbon structure. The synergistic activation between KHCO 3 and Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 ·2H 2 O endows the obtained porous carbons with hierarchical porous structure, honeycomb-like morphology and large specific surface area (1282 m 2 g −1 ). In the three-electrode system, the optimal sample displays superior rate performance (70 % capacitance retention @ 50 A g −1 ) and high specific capacitance (321 F g −1 @ 1 A g −1 ). Symmetric two-electrode configurations were tested in 6 M KOH electrolyte, splendid cycling stability was observed (100 % capacity maintained after 10,000 cycles at 5 A g −1 ). Moreover, the symmetric supercapacitor assembled with neat EMIM BF 4 as the electrolyte reveals a high energy density of 33 Wh kg −1 @ 624.6 W kg −1 . This work offers new insights to manipulate the morphology and pore structure of coal-derived porous carbon for high performance supercapacitor electrode.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous carbons have been synthesized using amphiphilic carboxylated coal-tar pitch as a precursor via a simple KOH activation process. Amphiphilic carboxylated coal-tar pitch has a high content of hydrophilic carboxyl groups that enable it to be easily wetted in KOH solution and that facilitate the activation process. In the present study, the effect of the activation agent to precursor ratio on the porosity and the specific surface area was studied by nitrogen adsorption-desorption. A maximum specific surface area of 2669.1 m2 g-1 was achieved with a KOH to carboxylated pitch ratio of three and this produced a structure with micropores/mesopores. Among the various hierarchical porous carbons, the sample prepared with an activation agent to precursor ratio of two exhibited the best electrochemical performance as an electrode for an electrical double-layer capacitor in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. The specific capacitance of the sample was 286 F g-1 at a current density of 2 A g-1 and it had a capacitance-retention ratio of 93.9%, even after 10 000 cycles. Thus, hierarchical porous carbons derived from amphiphilic-carboxylated coal-tar pitch represent a promising electrode material for electrical double-layer capacitors.

Abstract:Carbon materials have been commonly studied as electrode materials in supercapacitor owing to their high stability and conductivity, controllable morphology, and wide range of sources. However, electrode materials made of carbon have a relatively low theoretical capacity. The electrochemical behavior of supercapacitors can be enhanced by enlarging the specific surface area, optimizing pore size distribution and internal pore structure of electrode materials, and doping heteroatoms. Herein, we develop a simple method for synthesizing O, N co-doped hierarchical porous carbon only through one-step carbonization. Through the synergistic effect of urea and KHCO 3 , the acquired hierarchical porous carbon has a highly interconnected porous structure, high specific surface area (2408 m 2 g −1 ), and rich surface O and N functional groups. Therefore, the obtained porous carbon delivers a high specific capacitance (359 F g −1 @ 1 A g −1 ), superior rate performance (265 F g −1 @ 50 A g −1 ) and long-term electrochemical stability in 6 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, the assembled two-electrode system shows a high energy density of 9.0 Wh kg −1 . Furthermore, the assembled zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor also exhibits superior reversible capacity (185 mA h g −1 @ 0.2 A g −1 ) and satisfactory long-time cyclability. The outstanding electrochemical performance indicates that O, N co-doped hierarchical porous carbon materials have broad application prospects in high-performance energy devices.

Abstract:We prepared hierarchical porous carbon based on the metathesis reaction of K2CO3 with CH3COOH. During carbonization, the reactant (K2CO3) and the reaction product (CH3COOK) acted as activators and templates. The influence of the ratio of K2CO3/CH3COOK on the electrochemical performance of hierarchical porous carbon was explored. The obtained porous carbon has a high specific surface area (2289 m2/g) and adjustable micro-/mesoporous porosity. When the molar ratio of K2CO3/CH3COOK is 1, The specific capacitance is 374.4 F g-1 at 1 A g–1, and the capacitance retention rate reaches 76.4% when the current density increases to 10 A g–1. The assembled symmetrical supercapacitor (PC-2/PC-2) has good cycle stability in 1 M Na2SO4 in the voltage window of 0-2.0 V. When the power density is 500.02 W kg–1, the maximum energy density of 29.14 Wh kg–1 is obtained. These results show excellent performance in supercapacitor based on the metathesis reaction of K2CO3 with CH3COOH.

Abstract:Favourable pore configuration and active heteroatoms contribute significantly to intrinsic electrochemical performance of carbon materials. Herein, N, S co-doped porous carbons are prepared through a two-step calcination process, in which pre-carbonized chitosan, thiourea and potassium hydroxide are served as carbon source, dopant and activator, respectively. Optimal sample CTK-3 exhibits considerable specific surface area (SSA), remarkable micropore configuration and heteroatom content. Therefore, it exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance (309.4 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), cyclic stability (98.7% after 8000 cycles) and rate capability. Moreover, the symmetrical supercapacitors assembled by CTK-3 yields an ultrahigh energy density of 15.6 Wh kg −1 , indicating appealing application potential of the N, S co-doped porous carbon.
