Abstract:Many architectural systems are modelled by boundary value problems. Though there are many numerical and analytical methods to solve such problems, this paper suggests a simple but effective way to the third-order ordinary differential equations by the Taylor series technology. The governing equation is differentiated to obtain high order derivatives of a certain point, and solution is expanded into a Taylor series of the point, the boundary conditions are then used to identify the unknowns involved in the approximate solution. An example is given to elucidate the solution process, the maximal error is less 2%, and its accuracy can be further improved if a higher order series is solved. The approximate solution is compared with that by the variational iteration method, showing the present method is simpler and more straightforward. The comparison with the numerical solution culminates in its reliability and effectiveness. The method can be extended to fractal calculus.

Abstract:Population balance equations (PBE) are widely applied to describe many physicochemical processes such as nanoparticle synthesis, chemical processes for particulates, colloid gel, aerosol dynamics, and disease progression. The numerical study for solving the PBE, i.e. population balance modeling, is undergoing rapid development. In this review, the application of the Taylor series expansion scheme in solving the PBE was discussed. The theories, implement criteria, and applications are presented here in a universal form for ease of use. The aforementioned method is mathematically economical and applicable to the combination of fine-particle physicochemical processes and can be used to numerically and pseudo-analytically describe the time evolution of statistical parameters governed by the PBE. This article summarizes the principal details of the method and discusses its application to engineering problems. Four key issues relevant to this method, namely, the optimization of type of moment sequence, selection of Taylor series expansion point, optimization of an order of Taylor series expansion, and selection of terms for Taylor series expansion, are emphasized. The possible direction for the development of this method and its advantages and shortcomings are also discussed.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce an efficient numerical approach for finding the numerical solution for coupled Lane–Emden–Fower type equations using the variational iteration method combined with the Adomian polynomial. The convergence analysis of the proposed approach is investigated under very general conditions. A couple of numerical examples are included and contrasted with the existing methods (Singh et al., 2021;Sinha et al., 2023;Duan et al., 2015) and the exact solution to check the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach. The present method shows faster convergence, computational efficiency, time efficiency and simplicity of implementation.

Abstract:Aiming at the Lane–Emden type differential equations owing singular initial value problem, an improved Physics-Informed Neural Network method based on Pell–Lucas polynomials is proposed. The method adopts feedforward neural network model and error back propagation principle. The analytical and numerical solutions of linear homogeneous, linear non-homogeneous, and nonlinear homogeneous Lane–Emden equations are compared with the approximate solutions of Chebyshev neural network proposed by Mall. Numerical examples show that the proposed method has high accuracy, which proves the effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a Taylor expansion method for solving (approximately) linear Volterra integral equations with weakly singular kernel. By means of the nth-order Taylor expansion of the unknown function at an arbitrary point, the Volterra integral equation can be converted approximately to a system of equations for the unknown function itself and its n derivatives. This method gives a simple and closed form solution for the integral equation. In addition, some illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Uniformly constructing a series of explicit exact solutions to nonlinear equations in mathematical physics

Abstract:In this paper, we devise a new unified algebraic method to construct a series of explicit exact solutions for general nonlinear equations. Compared with most existing methods such as tanh method, Jacobi elliptic function method and homogeneous balance method, the proposed method not only gives new and more general solutions, but also provides a guideline to classify the various types of the solutions according to the values of some parameters. The solutions obtained in this paper include (a) polynomial solutions, (b) exponential solutions, (c) rational solutions, (d) triangular periodic wave solutions, (e) hyperbolic, and soliton solutions, (f) Jacobi, and Weierstrass doubly periodic wave solutions. The efficiency of the method can be demonstrated on a large variety of nonlinear equations such as those considered in this paper, combined KdV–MKdV, Camassa–Holm, Kaup–Kupershmidt, Jaulent–Miodek, (2+1)-dimensional dispersive long wave, new (2+1)-dimensional generalized Hirota, (2+1)-dimensional breaking soliton and double sine-Gordon equations. In addition, the links among our proposed method, the tanh method, the extended method and the Jacobi function expansion method are also clarified generally.

Abstract:We compare and discuss the respective efficiency of three methods (with two variants for each of them), based respectively on Taylor (Maclaurin) series, Padé approximants and conformal mappings, for solving quasi-analytically a two-point boundary value problem of a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE). Six configurations of ODE and boundary conditions are successively considered according to the increasing difficulties that they present. After having indicated that the Taylor series method almost always requires the recourse to analytical continuation procedures to be efficient, we use the complementarity of the two remaining methods (Padé and conformal mapping) to illustrate their respective advantages and limitations. We emphasize the importance of the existence of solutions with movable singularities for the efficiency of the methods, particularly for the so-called Padé-Hankel method. (We show that this latter method is equivalent to pushing a movable pole to infinity.) For each configuration, we determine the singularity distribution (in the complex plane of the independent variable) of the solution sought and show how this distribution controls the efficiency of the two methods. In general the method based on Padé approximants is easy to use and robust but may be awkward in some circumstances whereas the conformal mapping method is a very fine method which should be used when high accuracy is required.

Abstract:In this paper, an optimal decomposition algorithm is introduced to solve a kind of nonlinear fourth-order Emden–Fowler equations (EFEs) that appear in many applied fields. Transforming the Emden–Fowler equation into a Volterra integral equivalent equation allows us to deal with the singularity at the endpoint x=0 . This conversion also helps to reduce the computational cost of solving the problem. The existence and uniqueness of the solution of each integral equation obtained are established in the corresponding theorems. The convergence analysis further supports the theoretical findings. The accuracy and efficiency of the new method are tested against the existing method (Wazwaz et al., 2014) using numerous cases, and the results show that the presented scheme is a reliable method for computing approximate series solutions and even exact solutions. In addition, the new technique overcomes the drawback of the existing method, that provides only an approximation within a limited interval.

Abstract:The aim of this manuscript is to address non-linear differential equations of the Lane Emden equation of second order using the shifted Legendre neural network (SLNN) method. Here all the equations are classified as singular initial value problems. To manage the singularity challenge, we employ an artificial neural network method. The approach utilizes a neural network of a single layer, where the hidden layer is omitted by enlarge the input using shifted Legendre polynomials. We apply a feed forward neural network model along with the principle of error back propagation. The effectiveness of the Legendre Neural Network model is demonstrated through LaneEmden equations.

Abstract:Based a spectral problem with an arbitrary parameter and Lenard operator pairs, we derive a generalized Kaup–Newell type hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations, which is explicitly related to many important equations such as the Kundu equation, the Kaup–Newell (KN) equation, the Chen–Lee–Liu (CLL) equation, the Gerdjikov–Ivanov (GI) equation, the Burgers equation, the MKdV equation and the Sharma–Tasso–Olver equation. Furthermore, the separation of variables for x- and tm-constrained flows of the the generalized Kaup–Newell hierarchy is shown. Especially the Kundu, KN, CLL and GI equations are uniformly decomposed into systems of solvable ordinary differential equations. A hyperelliptic Riemann surface and Abel–Jacobi coordinates are introduced to straighten the associated flow, from which the algebro-geometric solutions of these equations are explicitly constructed in terms of the Riemann theta functions by standard Jacobi inversion technique.

Abstract:The solutions of parabolic and hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by an infinite dimensional Brownian motion, which is a martingale, are in general not semi-martingales any more and therefore do not satisfy an Itô formula like the solutions of finite dimensional stochastic differential equations (SODEs). In particular, it is not possible to derive stochastic Taylor expansions as for the solutions of SODEs using an iterated application of the Itô formula. However, in this article we introduce Taylor expansions of solutions of SPDEs via an alternative approach, which avoids the need of an Itô formula. The main idea behind these Taylor expansions is to use first classical Taylor expansions for the nonlinear coefficients of the SPDE and then to insert recursively the mild presentation of the solution of the SPDE. The iteration of this idea allows us to derive stochastic Taylor expansions of arbitrarily high order. Combinatorial concepts of trees and woods provide a compact formulation of the Taylor expansions.

Abstract:We analyze the Lane–Emden equations in the cylindrical framework. Although the explicit forms of the solutions (which are also called polytropes) are not known, we identify some of their qualitative properties. In particular, possible critical points and zeros of the polytropes are investigated and discussed, leading to possible improvements in the approximation methods which are currently employed. The cases when the critical parameter is odd and even are separately analyzed. Furthermore, we propose a technique to evaluate the distance between a pair of polytropes in small intervals.
