Abstract:For graphs F , G , and H , we write if every red-blue coloring of the edges of F produces a red copy of G or a blue copy of H . The graph F is said to be ( G , H )-minimal if it is subgraph-minimal with respect to this property. The characterization problem for Ramsey-minimal graphs is classically done for finite graphs. In 2021, Barrett and the second author generalized this problem to infinite graphs. They asked which pairs ( G , H ) admit a Ramsey-minimal graph and which ones do not. We show that any pair of star forests such that at least one of them involves an infinite-star component admits no Ramsey-minimal graph. Also, we construct a Ramsey-minimal graph for a finite star forest versus a subdivision graph. This paper builds upon the results of Burr et al. (Discrete Math 33:227–237, 1981) on Ramsey-minimal graphs for finite star forests.

Abstract:An ordered graph is a graph equipped with a linear ordering of its vertex set. A pair of ordered graphs is Ramsey finite if it has only finitely many minimal ordered Ramsey graphs and Ramsey infinite otherwise. Here an ordered graph <math>F</math> is an ordered Ramsey graph of a pair <math>(H,H′)</math> of ordered graphs if for any coloring of the edges of <math>F</math> in colors red and blue there is either a copy of <math>H</math> with all edges colored red or a copy of <math>H′</math> with all edges colored blue (where copies are not necessarily induced subgraphs). Such an ordered Ramsey graph is minimal if neither of its proper subgraphs is an ordered Ramsey graph of <math>(H,H′)</math>. If <math>H=H′</math> then <math>H</math> itself is called Ramsey finite.We show that a connected ordered graph is Ramsey finite if and only if it is a star with center being the first or the last vertex in the linear order. In general we prove that each Ramsey finite (not necessarily connected) ordered graph <math>H</math> has a pseudoforest as a Ramsey graph and therefore is a star forest with strong restrictions on the positions of the centers of the stars. In the asymmetric case we show that <math>(H,H′)</math> is Ramsey finite whenever <math>H</math> is a so-called monotone matching. Among several further results we show that there are Ramsey finite pairs of ordered stars and ordered caterpillars of arbitrary size and diameter. This is in contrast to the unordered setting where for any Ramsey finite pair <math>(H,H′)</math> of forests either one of <math>H</math> or <math>H′</math> is a matching or both are star forests (with additional constraints).Several of our results give a relation between Ramsey finiteness and the existence of sparse ordered Ramsey graphs. Motivated by these relations we characterize all pairs of ordered graphs that have a forest as an ordered Ramsey graph and all pairs of ordered graphs that have a pseudoforest as a Ramsey graph.Our results show similarities between the ordered and the unordered setting for graphs containing cycles and significant differences for forests.

Abstract:For fixed finite graphs $G$, $H$, a common problem in Ramsey theory is to study graphs $F$ such that $F \to (G,H)$, i.e. every red-blue coloring of the edges of $F$ produces either a red $G$ or a blue $H$. We generalize this study to infinite graphs $G$, $H$; in particular, we want to determine if there is a minimal such $F$. This problem has strong connections to the study of self-embeddable graphs: infinite graphs which properly contain a copy of themselves. We prove some compactness results relating this problem to the finite case, then give some general conditions for a pair $(G,H)$ to have a Ramsey-minimal graph. We use these to prove, for example, that if $G=S_\infty$ is an infinite star and $H=nK_2$, $n \geqslant 1$ is a matching, then the pair $(S_\infty,nK_2)$ admits no Ramsey-minimal graphs.

Abstract:Given graphs $ F_1, F_2$ and $G$, we say that $G$ is Ramsey for $(F_1,F_2)$ and we write $G\rightarrow(F_1, F_2)$, if for every edge coloring of $G$ by red and blue, there is either a red copy of $F_1$ or a blue copy of $F_2$ in $G$. The size Ramsey number $\hat{r}(F_1, F_2)$ is defined as the minimum number of edges of a graph $G$ such that $G\rightarrow(F_1, F_2)$. This paper provides the exact value of $\hat{r}(F_1, F_2)$ for many pairs $(F_1, F_2)$ of star forests, giving a partial solution to a conjecture of Burr et al. (Ramsey-minimal graphs for multiple copies, Indagationes Mathematicae, 81(2) (1978), 187-195).

Abstract:For any graphs G and H, we write F → (G, H) to means that in any red-blue coloring of all the edges of F, the graph F will contain either a red G or a blue H. A graph F is called a Ramsey (G,H)-minimal graph if F satisfies two conditions: F → (G, H), and F∗ -A (G, H) for every subgraph F∗ of F. The set of all Ramsey (G, H)-minimal graphs is denoted by R(G, H). In this paper, we construct some family of graphs which belong to R(P3, Pn), for any n ≥ 6. In particular, we give an infinite class of trees which provides Ramsey (P3, P7)-minimal graphs.

Abstract:Given two graphs G and H , the Ramsey number R ( G , H ) is the minimum integer N such that any coloring of the edges of in red or blue yields a red G or a blue H . Let be the chromatic number of G , and s ( G ) denote the chromatic surplus of G , the cardinality of a minimum color class taken over all proper colorings of G with colors. A connected graph G is called H -good if . Chvátal (J. Graph Theory 1:93, 1977) showed that any tree is -good for , where denotes a complete graph with m vertices. Let tH denote the union of t disjoint copies of graph H . Sudarsana et al. (Comput. Sci. 6196, Springer, Berlin, 2010) proved that the n -vertex path is -good for and , and conjectured that any n -vertex tree is -good. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture and prove that is -good for and . We also prove a conclusion which yields that is -good, where is the disjoint union of and , . Furthermore, we extend the Ramsey goodness of connected graphs to disconnected graphs and study the relation between the Ramsey number of the components of a disconnected graph versus a graph H . We show that if each component of a graph F is H -good, then F is H -good. Our result implies the exact value of , where F is a forest and .

Abstract:For graphs G,F and H we write G→(F,H) to mean that if the edges of G are coloured with two colours, say red and blue, then the red subgraph contains a copy of F or the blue subgraph contains a copy of H. The graph G is (F,H)-minimal (Ramsey-minimal) if G→(F,H) but G′↛(F,H) for any proper subgraph G′⊆G. The class of all (F,H)-minimal graphs will be denoted by R(F,H). In this paper we will give two equivalent theorems which characterize the graphs belonging to R(K1,2,K1,m) for m⩾3.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 55-74, March 2024. A graph [math] is Ramsey for a pair of graphs [math] if any red/blue-coloring of the edges of [math] yields a copy of [math] with all edges colored red or a copy of [math] with all edges colored blue. Two pairs of graphs are called Ramsey equivalent if they have the same collection of Ramsey graphs. The symmetric setting, that is, the case [math], received considerable attention. This led to the open question whether there are connected graphs [math] and [math] such that [math] and [math] are Ramsey equivalent. We make progress on the asymmetric version of this question and identify several nontrivial families of Ramsey equivalent pairs of connected graphs. Certain pairs of stars provide a first, albeit trivial, example of Ramsey equivalent pairs of connected graphs. Our first result characterizes all Ramsey equivalent pairs of stars. The rest of the paper focuses on pairs of the form [math], where [math] is a tree and [math] is a complete graph. We show that if [math] belongs to a certain family of trees, including all nontrivial stars, then [math] is Ramsey equivalent to a family of pairs of the form [math], where [math] is obtained from [math] by attaching disjoint smaller cliques to some of its vertices. In addition, we establish that for [math] to be Ramsey equivalent to [math], [math] must have roughly this form. On the other hand, we prove that for many other trees [math], including all odd-diameter trees, [math] is not equivalent to any such pair, not even to the pair [math], where [math] is a complete graph [math] with a single edge attached.

Abstract:We show that the class of finite rooted binary plane trees is a Ramsey class (with respect to topological embeddings that map leaves to leaves). That is, for all such trees P,H and every natural number k there exists a tree T such that for every k-coloring of the (topological) copies of P in T there exists a (topological) copy H' of H in T such that all copies of P in H' have the same color. When the trees are represented by the so-called rooted triple relation, the result gives rise to a Ramsey class of relational structures with respect to induced substructures.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is said to be Ramsey size-linear if $r(G,H) =O_G (e(H))$ for every graph $H$ with no isolated vertices. Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp observed that $K_4$ is not Ramsey size-linear, but each of its proper subgraphs is, and they asked whether there exist infinitely many such graphs. In this short note, we answer this question in the affirmative.

Abstract:We consider two simple graphs G and H , the notation F → ( G, H ) means that for any red- blue coloring of all the edges of graph F contains either a red copy isomorphic to G or a blue copy isomorphic to H . A graph F is Ramsey ( G, H )-minimal graph if F → ( G, H ) and for any edge e in F then F - e → ( G, H ). The set of all Ramsey minimal graphs for pair ( G, H ) is denoted by R( G, H ). The Ramsey set for pair ( G, H ) is said to be Ramsey-finite or Ramsey-infinite if R( G, H ) is finite or infinite, respectively. Several articles have discussed the problem of determining whether R( G, H ) is finite (infinite). It is known that the set R( P m , P n ), for 3 ≤ m ≤ n is Ramsey-infinite. Some partial results in R( P 4 , P n ), for n = 4 and n = 5 , have been obtained. Motivated by this, we are interested in determining graphs in R( P 4 , P 6 ). In this paper, we determine some graphs of certain order in R( P 4 , P 6 ).

Abstract:We prove a theorem ensuring that the compositions of certain Ramsey families are still Ramsey. As an application, we show that in any finite coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ there is an infinite set $A$ and an as large as desired finite set $B$ with $(A+B)\cup (AB)$ monochromatic, answering a question from a recent paper of Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson. In fact, we prove an iterated version of this result that also generalizes a Ramsey theorem of Bergelson and Moreira that was previously only known to hold for fields. Our main new technique is an extension of the color focusing method that involves trees rather than sequences.

Abstract:Burr and Erdős in 1975 conjectured, and Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter later proved, that the Ramsey number of any bounded degree graph is linear in the number of vertices. In this paper, we disprove the natural directed analogue of the Burr–Erdős conjecture, answering a question of Bucić, Letzter, and Sudakov. If H is an acyclic digraph, the oriented Ramsey number of H , denoted , is the least N such that every tournament on N vertices contains a copy of H . Abstract:Given a pair of graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(G,H)$ is the smallest $N$ such that every red-blue coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. If a graph $G$ is connected, it is well known and easy to show that $R(G,H) \geq (|G|-1)(\chi(H)-1)+\sigma(H)$, where $\chi(H)$ is the chromatic number of $H$ and $\sigma(H)$ is the size of the smallest color class in a $\chi(H)$-coloring of $H$. A graph $G$ is called $H$-good if $R(G,H)= (|G|-1)(\chi(H)-1)+\sigma(H)$. The notion of Ramsey goodness was introduced by Burr and Erdős in 1983 and has been extensively studied since then. In this paper we show that if $n\geq \Omega(|H| \log^4 |H|)$ then every $n$-vertex bounded degree tree $T$ is $H$-good. The dependency between $n$ and $|H|$ is tight up to $\log$ factors. This substantially improves a result of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp from 1985, who proved that $n$-vertex bounded degree trees are $H$-good when when $n \geq \Omega(|H|^4)$.

Abstract:For two graphs $G,H$, the \emph{Ramsey number} $r(G,H)$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that any red/blue edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains either a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. For two graphs $G,H$, the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} $\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)$ is defined as the minimum integer $n$ such that any $k$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ must contain either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, the classical Ramsey numbers of linear forest versus kipas are obtained. We obtain the exact values of $\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)$, where $H$ is either a path or a kipas and $G\in\{K_{1,3},P_4^+,P_5\}$ and $P_4^+$ is the graph consisting of $P_4$ with one extra edge incident with inner vertex.

Abstract:For a fixed graph $F$, the $\textit{anti-Ramsey number}$, $AR(n,F)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_n$ which does not contain a rainbow copy of $F$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of anti-Ramsey numbers of linear forests for sufficiently large $n$, and show the extremal edge-colored graphs. This answers a question of Fang, Győri, Lu and Xiao.

Abstract:We call a subgraph of an edge-colored graph rainbow, if all of its edges have different colors. The anti-Ramsey number of a graph G in a complete graph K-n, denoted by ar(K-n, G), is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of K-n, with no rainbow copy of G. In this paper, we determine the exact value of the anti-Ramsey number for star forests and double stars and the approximate value of the anti-Ramsey number for linear forests. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
