Abstract:Grice’s Cooperative Principle (CP) was originally presented at Harvard University in 1967 as part of the William James lectures. Once established, Cooperative Principle had a widespread impact on a range of scholar activity, from work interested in the narrowest issues of language meaning to work interested in the broadest questions of social communication. As is known, verbal humor is a genre of linguistics interaction that often emerges in daily conversation. This paper is aimed at probing into the linguistic basis involved in the process of language humor from the perspective of Grice’s CP. It is also intended to reveal the relation between creation of humor and violation of cooperative principle, and then give critical comments on Grice’s cooperative principle, which mainly focuses on limitations Grice’s cooperative principle. Finally, the essay has a natural conclusion for contribution of study pragmatics of conversational principle, and its application in other fields.

Abstract:This study aims to examine various interpretations of the principle of cooperation. The principle of cooperation (CP) was first proposed by H.P. Grice in a series of lectures given in 1967. Grice's most influential contribution to linguistics was his theory of implicature. He illustrated that communication follows what he calls the Cooperative Principle (CP) and argues that the fundamental assumption we make when we speak is that we try to work together to build meaningful conversations (1975). The principle of Grice's Cooperation has become controversial in pragmatics. The main source of controversy related to CP is that the term "cooperation" is open to different interpretations. This article uses descriptive qualitative methods. As for the results of the study of this article, the principle of cooperation has always tended to focus too much on the term 'cooperation', rather than looking at and examining the principle titles for motivation given by Grice to the mechanisms that he has identified.

Abstract:This essay proposes a tripartite metaperspective of discourse study: discourse may be studied as utterance, social interaction, or social context. Once established, the metaperspective is used to survey uses and critiques of Grice's Cooperative Principle (CP) across several fields (e.g., linguistic philosophy, gender studies, teacher research). The scholarship surveyed illustrates the widespread impact the Cooperative Principle has had on a range of scholarly activity, from work interested in the narrowest issues of language meaning to work interested in the broadest questions of the social context of human communication. The survey demonstrates that scholars who study discourse as utterance are most interested in the CP's maxims and conversational implicature, while they critique the notion of a general cooperative principle; scholars who study discourse as social interaction are more critical of the maxims. Scholars who approach the CP from more than one perspective are more likely to find the CP most useful. The essay concludes that no articulation of how the CP could consistently describe discourse as utterance, social interaction, and social context exists, but such an articulation could answer critiques of the CP, open the concept for greater cross-disciplinary use and provide new vocabulary for describing discourse. Abstract:Theories on Guanxi being developed and improved becomes the focus for researchers in the fields of sociology,psychology,management and anthropology.Guanxi acts with cultural,transferable,reciprocal,intangible,utilitarian and long-term characteristics.Guanxi is formed with cultural,political and social reasons.Guanxi is influenced by organizational,strategic,institutional and individual factors.The outcomes of Guanxi are performance improvement,individual knowledge transferring and trust increasing.According to domestic and foreign literatures,this paper reviews Guanxi researchs and points out the future research directions.

Abstract:For the past forty years,Grice's theory of Conversational Implicature has been held as a classic as well as a constant target for criticism,interpretation,reformulation,and revision along both the expansionist and reductionist lines.This paper discusses the philosophical framework of the Cooperative Principle,not principles,and reviews the developments of Post-Gricean and Neo-Gricean principles,which are essentially Classical Gricean in nature,and points out that the Gricean Principle has been,and will still be,a useful philosophical blueprint for all efforts aiming at theorizing purposive use of language in rational human communication.

Abstract:Our main claim in this paper is that, although Grice's theory is apparently about conversation, it has a potential to account for and explain discourse in institutional contexts. However, in order to achieve this, due attention has to be paid to factors of a societal kind. For us, this should mean examining the correlations between participants' socioeconomic interests, their social identities, the social and situational powers they (do not) possess, their expectations about activities, etc. on the one hand, and principled forms of language use, on the other. We proceed as follows: first, we outline how the Cooperative Principle has been defined by Grice himself. Next we draw attention to how his theory has been received within various strands of linguistic enquiry. On the basis of our analysis of instances of institutional discourse (both spoken and written), we then formulate a number of proposals to meet some of the apparent shortcomings in the original Gricean scheme. These proposals are contained within an appeal for a social pragmatics which goes beyond meaning on a speak-hearer basis and the immediate discourse situation.

Abstract:As humans communicate, much of what goes on is not simply about conveying information to themselves. In Grice’s paper “Logic and Conversation (1975)”, he argued that some cooperative principle is assumed to be in operation for a person to interpret what someone else says. In a typical conversational flow, the speaker needs to adhere to a pattern in order to be informative, truthful and clear and there exist a set of principles that direct the hearer to a particular interpretation of what is said. This is because a speaker can mean something either by saying it or by saying (or ‘making as if to say’) something else. What is implicated by saying something is generally not what is said. This paper attempted to critically review how speakers manage to convey more than what is said and how the hearer arrives at the speaker meaning using a descriptive qualitative approach. This paper employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The key findings of the study is described in two context: first of all, speakers intentionally obey the maxims in conversation which in essence affirms Grice’s theory of cooperative principle in fulfilment of at least some of the maxims. Second, speakers exploit the maxims either deliberately or fail to observe by deciding to violate, suspend, flout, infringe, or opt-out of a conversation. This situation is one premised to give rise to conversational implicatures. A competent hearer should be able to arrive at these possible conclusions in order to draw out the speaker meaning from what was merely said.

Abstract:By the analysis on the studies on the Co-operative,this paper distinguishes the four frameworks of theories and studies on the Co-operative research,namely new classic approach,principle-agent theory,transaction cost theory and game theory.This paper illustrates the main features,contents of the four frameworks and makes a conclusion.And the paper gives some suggestions: On the one hand,the approaches and study mechanisms should properly be in line with the contents;On the other hand,when arrange the internal control mechanisms of a Co-operative,one should fully bear in mind the influence of the Co-operative on the famer and market place,which also needs studies with different theories and from different angles.

Abstract:The author strongly believes in Black’s (2006) remark that Grician Maxims of conversational cooperation have a considerable degree of relevance for the processing of literary discourse on the innermost level of character-to-character interactions (p. 27). In the backdrop of this, this paper aims to demonstrate how analytical dimension of literary studies can be expanded by involving Grice’s (1975) pragmatic stylistic theory of Cooperative Priciple (CP) and explores how the fictional discourses could be better understood by reconstructing inferential chains of interpretation along with various issues of inferences in the dialogic discourses of the characters from Vikram Seth’s magnum opus A Suitable Boy (ASB). The CP contributes to contextualization of the text; provides interpretative possibilities that explain how we draw inferences from conversation; and hints to interpretations of how direct and indirect discourses are manipulated in literary works of fiction. The major findings of this paper suggest that the real value and richness of conversational maxims of Grice lie not in observing but in flouting them and that the major motivation for violating the requirements of these maxims are related to characters’ socio-cultural concerns such as politeness, tact, social power and taboos and also to the inter-personal factors like various cross-purposes, attitudes, personal tensions, conflicts, etc. Arriving at pragmatic meanings through the maxims of CP involves effort and increases engagement with the text; therefore, the author strongly recommends that pragmatic stylistic analysis be frequently included as an important pedagocial activity of studying fictional discourses in the teaching of language and literature.

Abstract:This is review of Construction Grammar, an approach that is newly established and grounded in Cognitive Linguistics. The notion of construction has, as Goldberg (1995: 1) points out, a time-honored place in linguistics, and it is defined as a pairing of form and meaning. Construction Grammar claims that grammatical constructions have meaning independent of the words they contain. For example, the constructional meaning of the ditransitive construction in English is claimed to be X causes Y to receive Z. Construction Grammar also emphasizes that to adopt constructional approach is to undertake in principle commitment to account for the entirety of each language (Kay Fillmore, 1999), from the relatively general patterns of the language to those highly idiomatic patterns.In this paper, we concentrate on major research topics of Construction Grammar, which include constructional studies on argument structure, lexical semantics and marked constructions. We then proceed to tentative discussion of the main features of Construction Grammar, its main strengths and weaknesses, and its possible future development.

Abstract:The zeitgeist of studying CP has attracted scholars, particularly in Indonesia, to scrutinize its application in the ELT context. Previous studies endeavor to approach CP in the ELT through examining classroom interaction and maxim violation and flouting. Yet, limited studies have been attempted to deeply delineate and unravel its implication to culture and the online learning environment. Tapping further into the application of CP in an online learning environment may paint a rosy picture of how people cooperate in an online environment to avoid misunderstanding. This study also suggests an analysis and comparison of CP in the different cultural backgrounds as a promising study especially in Indonesia with its abundant cultural diversity.

Abstract:This study goes beyond student perceptions of online learning experiences, satisfaction, and attitudes, to examine the actual participation and dynamics that occur in online discussions and their relationship to student learning outcomes. A content analysis approach was used to investigate students' socio-cognitive processes in an online graduate-level English grammar class. Student postings were rated using a newly developed Gricean Cooperative Principle scoring rubric to assess student participation as determined by four maxims: Quantity, Quality, Relevance, and Manner. Results suggest that Quality is the most important criterion for predicting direct responses to a posting. Students with high average Quality scores also received higher final course grades than did their counterparts. In addition, students with high scores for Manner earned higher conference grades than did their counterparts.

Abstract:Grice, H. P., an American linguist, first proposed the Cooperative Principle in 1967, which is an indispensable part of pragmatics. Grice believes that people make more or less efforts for cooperation in order to achieve the purpose of conversation in daily conversation. Sometimes they deliberately violate the Cooperative Principle and produce special Conversational Implicature. This paper analyzes a few dialogues in Little Sheldon from the perspective of violating the Cooperative Principle to explore the actual conversational meaning and illocutionary meaning behind the dialogues.

Abstract:Developments in characterizing discourse communities and their various genres are hoped to provide more insight into the nature of language in use. Such characterizations gradually tend to include the rhetorical and less visible aspects of different genres in different discourse communities. The trend seems rewarding due to the multilingual membership in discourse communities and inevitability of interference from speech communities. Although several studies have tried to describe the distribution and nature of metadiscourse marking across disciplines and languages, no systematic attempt was made, to our knowledge, to introduce a practical model that presumably guides the users in the real time of writing. By analyzing metadiscourse samples from the genre of research article of academic discourse community, this study embarks on introducing a tentative model based on Gricean cooperative principle (CP) that is hoped to help the multilingual members of academic discourse community in the use of metadiscourse markers. The Gricean categories of CP, developed here, are hoped to provide a practical framework that informs how to use rather than how is it used of metadiscourse in writing research articles. Such a model can be assumed an improvement against coarse-grained holistic guides for the use of metadiscourse offered by previous studies. The attempt also led to a new classification of metadiscourse and added two new metadiscourse strategies of collapsers and disclaimers.

Abstract:This study discusses the flouting and violation of the cooperative principles in the novel "Drupadi" by Seno Gumira Ajidarma. The purpose of this study is to examine the utterances in the novel "Drupadi" by Seno Gumira Ajidarma those that apply and violate Grice’s cooperative principle (four maxims). The four maxims are the maxim of relation, the maxim of manner, the maxim of quality, and the maxim of quantity. This research collected data through the technique of reading and writing. The data analysis techniques are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results show that twelve words are included in the utterances that adhere to the cooperative principle. Six expressions obey the relevance/relational maxim, one expression obey the maxim of manner, four obey the quality maxim, and one utterance obey the quantity maxim. The researcher also found speeches that violated the cooperative principle as many as three words. Two utterances violate the quality maxim, and one utterance violates the quantity maxim, no utterance violates the maxim of the relevance and maxim of the way.

Abstract:Article discussed how native speakers of Indonesian observed Grice’s maxims. One hundred conversations contributed in live talk show from varied Indonesia television channels were analysed. The results show that Grice’s maxims are fulfilled in many conversations. Nevertheless, in other situations, two kinds of non-fulfilment of the maxims are observed. First, the speaker deliberately exploits a maxim, which is suitable to Grice’s theory. Second, the speaker fails to observe but does not exploit a maxim, which leads to some interpretations of the cultural patterns of the Indonesian language: communicative politeness, high context culture and the needs of harmony in communication that are considered as the manifesting of Indonesian culture.
