Abstract:An investigation was conducted of noble metal and metal oxide catalysts deposited on Al 2 O 3 . The noble metals Pt, Pd, Rh the metal oxides CuO, SnO 2 , CoO, Ag 2 O, In 2 O 3 , catalysts were examined. Also investigated were noble metal Pt, Pd, Rh-doped In 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 catalysts prepared by single sol–gel method. Both were studied for their capability to reduce NO by propene under lean conditions. In order to improve the catalytic activity and the temperature window, the intermediate addition propene between a Pt/Al 2 O 3 oxidation and metal oxide combined catalyst system was also studied. Pt/Al 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 combined catalyst showed high NO reduction activity in a wider temperature window, and more than 60% NO conversion was observed in the temperature range of 300–550 °C.

Abstract:Abstract Electrocatalytic conversion of nitrate (NO3-) to ammonia (NH3) holds significant potential in the control of nitrogen oxide (NOx) from stationary sources. However, previous studies on reaction intermediates remain unclear. Here we report that Pd/Cu2O hybrids with mesoporous hollow sphere structure show high selectivity (96.70%) and Faradaic efficiency (94.32%) for NH3 synthesis from NO3-. Detailed characterizations demonstrate that (1) Pd enables electrons transfer (Pd 3d → Cu 3d) and makes the polarization of Cu 3d orbitals by forming partial PdCu alloys, which makes Pd electron-deficiency but offers empty orbits to adsorb NO3-; (2) electron-rich Cu are more conducive to the occurrence of NO3- reduction. The mutual confirmation of online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations demonstrates that PdCu alloys block the generation of *NOH intermediate and facilitate the formation of *N, finally leading to a higher catalytic performance.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 –RR) technology provides a promising solution to recover the nitrate nutrition from wastewater through catalyzing nitrate reduction into value-added NH3. However, the selectivity and efficiency of electrocatalysts are frustrated due to the imbalance of *H adsorption (for NO3 hydrogenation) and unavoidable adjacent *H self-coupling on active sites, resulting in competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we report a PdCu single-atom alloy (SAA) catalyst that allows isolated Pd sites to produce *H for the hydrogenation process of *NO3 on neighboring Cu sites, which can restrain the *H self-coupling through extending the distance between two *H and thus effectively suppress competitive HER. Consequently, the PdCu SAA catalyst exhibits an ultrahigh NH3 Faraday efficiency (FE) of 97.1% with a yield of 15.4 μmol cm–2 h–1 from the electrocatalytic NO3 –RR in the neutral electrolyte, outperforming most of the reported catalysts. Single-crystal experiments and theoretical calculations further prove that the introduction of atomic Pd on the Cu (100) surface could serve as the main active site and greatly decrease the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) on Cu from ΔG = 0.39 eV (*NOO → *NOOH) to ΔG = 0.10 eV of *NOH → *NHOH on PdCu SAA.

Abstract:A Pd–Ni ellipsoidal nano-alloy catalyst with a long diameter of 5 ± 0.1 nm and short diameter of 3 ± 0.1 nm supported on carbon black (PdNi EN/CB) was successfully prepared via a facile one-pot synthesis route. During the synthetic process, cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) was used as a structure-directing agent, which induced the ellipsoidal morphology. As compared with commercial Pt/C, Pd/C and Pd–Ni catalyst without special morphology supported on carbon black (PdNi NW/CB), PdNi EN/CB demonstrated both ultrahigh catalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and favorable long-term durability in alkaline solutions. According to X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results, a down-shift of the Pd d-band center, which weakens the adsorption strength for oxygen-containing species, along with a reaction path closer to the ideal free energy due to the small particle size and special morphology of Pd–Ni ellipsoidal nano-alloys contribute to the excellent activity of the PdNi EN/CB catalyst.

Abstract:Direct catalytic decomposition of NO is regarded as the most ideal technology for the removal of NO from exhausts. However, it suffers from high operating temperature and strict anaerobic conditions. Herein, we innovatively propose decomposing NO in aqueous solution under mild condition utilizing the complexation of Fe(II)EDTA with NO. Highly dispersed Pd nanoparticle supported on P-doped carbon nanotubes (Pd/P-CNT) is designed for the proof of concepts. Owning to its activation towards NO and hydrogenation in aqueous solution, the complexed NO in Fe(II)EDTA solution could be directly decomposed into N 2 and O 2 on Pd/P-CNT at only 60 °C with a turnover frequency of 11.64 s −1 . O 18 isotope experiments indicate that O 2 in products is derived from the O atoms in NO rather than that in H 2 O. In suit Raman measurements reveals that the NO could be adsorbed on Pd and the formation of O 2 is probably due to the coupling of *OH. Furthermore, DFT calculation presents the formation of *HOOH is the rate determine step in the decomposition of NO. This work offers a clear strategy for the catalyst design and a new method for the direct catalytic decomposition of NO, which would inspire the research on the removal of NO.

Abstract:Due to their high catalytic activity, stability, and economic benefits, Pt-based multi-element alloyed nanoparticles (NPs) are considered promising electrodes for oxygen reduction reactions. However, a synthesis method capable of controlling the reduction reaction of elements with different redox potentials to synthesize multimetallic alloy NPs is yet to be developed. In this study, monodisperse NiPtPd alloy NPs with varying compositions were synthesized using 1-heptanol as a reducing solvent. The selection of low-reducing noble metal precursors and complexing agents is done strategically to adjust the reduction time of metal ions. The spectroscopic results confirmed that olelylamine (OAm) preferentially coordinates with Pt ions, while trioctylphosphine (TOP) preferentially coordinates with Pd ions. Consequently, control of the elemental distribution within the particle is successfully achieved by adjusting the OAm/Pt and TOP/Pd molar ratios. Subsequently, Ni 78 Pt 11 Pd 11 alloy NPs were designed, and their catalytic properties as electrodes in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were examined. Despite a low noble metal content of 22%, the catalytic performance and stability were superior to and comparable to those of commercial Pt NPs, respectively.

Single Pd Atom Embedded in CeO2(111) for NO Reduction with CO: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:Environmental and economic constraints necessitate further improvement of the activity and selectivity of dispersed Pd, Rh, and Pt metals for use in NOx reduction. We present here a density functional theory plus U study of NO reduction with CO catalyzed by a single Pd-1 atom embedded in CeO2(111) (noted as Pd-1/CeO2(111)). The complete catalytic cycle for NO + CO -> CO2 + 1/2N(2), including competitive adsorption of reactants, generation of the oxygen vacancy by CO, formation of N2O2* intermediates, scission of N-O bonds, and formation of N-2, is mapped out. The calculations indicate that Pd-1/CeO2(111) is active and selective toward N-2, in agreement with available experimental literature. The key intermediate N2O2* toward N-2 is identified, and the rate-limiting step is the first deoxygenation step of N2O2* with a barrier of 1.43 eV. The Pd-1-O-V pair embedded in CeO2(111) is proposed to be the active site, responsible not only for the formation of N2O2* by the reaction of two NO molecules but also for the subsequent two deoxygenation steps to make N-2. Detailed electronic structure analysis indicates that the formation of the Pd,Ov pair and the synergetic effect between Pd 4d electron and reducibility of CeO2 are responsible for the catalytic activity of single Pd atom embedded in ceria.
Flexible monolithic Pt/CuO-Fe2O3/TiO2 catalysts integrated on Ti mesh for efficient NO removal via CO-SCR reaction

Abstract:This study reports on the development of highly-efficient Pt/CuO-Fe2O3/TiO2 monolithic catalysts for the low-temperature conversion of NO to N2 via CO-SCR. In this case, ultrathin TiO2 nanosheet arrays are designed to in situ grow on flexible Ti mesh to provide more spaces/areas for the loading of highly-dispersed Fe2O3 and CuO active components. Furthermore, Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 1.30 nm are effectively decorated on the surface of CuO-Fe2O3/TiO2. The H2-TPR and NO-TPD results demonstrate that the excellent synergistic effect between TiO2, CuO, Fe2O3 and trace amounts of Pt is conducive to enhance the adsorption of NO and finally promote the CO-SCR. The obtained Pt/CuO-Fe2O3/TiO2 catalysts exhibit excellent CO-SCR performance with 100 % NO conversion, and 100 % N2 selectivity at 250 °C, showing great potential of de-NOx application by using toxic CO as reductant in industry.

Abstract:CO selective catalytic reduction (CO‐SCR), a promising technology for simultaneous removal of harmful CO and NO in exhaust gases, has attracted much attention in recent years. Pt‐based catalysts have been demonstrated to be effective for this reaction. However, it remains a big challenge to achieve a high low‐temperature activity at a low Pt loading. Here we report a new catalyst consisting of subnanometric Pt on Cu nanoparticles confined in the NaOH‐modified Y‐zeolite (Pt‐Cu@M‐Y). This catalyst possesses much‐enhanced catalytic property in CO‐SCR at an extremely low Pt content of 0.04 wt% in the catalyst, achieving full NO conversion at 250 °C. The Pt‐Cu@M‐Y catalyst was synthesized using a simple impregnation method followed by a hydrogen reduction. Transmission electron microscopy study revealed that Pt‐Cu@M‐Y with subnanometric Pt on Cu nanoparticle of ~5 nm was highly dispersed in M‐Y. The superior catalytic property of Pt‐Cu@M‐Y is attributed to the synergistic catalysis of Pt and Cu, in which subnanometric Pt species contributes to the strong adsorption of NO, while the dissociation of NO and the migration of dissociated O atoms are significantly boosted on the newly generated interfaces between Cu nanoparticles and the formed surface CuO x species. This work develops an effective method for synthesizing bimetallic nanoparticles confined in zeolite and demonstrates their superior catalytic performance in the catalytic reduction of NO x by CO.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic conversion of NO 3 ̅ to NH 3 (NO 3 RR) with elevated activity and exceptional selectivity at low potential remains a formidable challenge. Herein, the A-Ag@Ni/Ni(OH) 2 NWs with atomic-level Ag/Ni interfaces were synthesized via electrochemical activation of Ag@Ni/Ni(OH) 2 NWs at −1.05 V vs. RHE for 1 hour, and subsequently employed for electrocatalytic NO 3 RR. Specially, Ag sites could afford active centers for the adsorption of NO 3 ̅ and convert it to NO 2 ̅. Furthermore, Ni/Ni(OH) 2 sites as vibrant centers for electrocatalytic H 2 O splitting, generating atomic H on the catalyst surface (H ads ), thereby facilitating the rapid conversion of NO 2 ̅ to NH 3 via the H ads -mediated pathway. DFT calculations further substantiate that the H ads -mediated pathway is thermodynamically more favorable than the electron reduction pathway, the former of which facilitates the generation of NH 3 and is an energy-efficient process, thus, the A-Ag@Ni/Ni(OH) 2 NWs show outstanding electrocatalytic activity and selectivity for NO 3 ̅-to-NH 3 transformation at low potential.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3-RR) is considered an appealing way for producing ammonia (NH3) under ambient conditions and solving environmental problems caused by nitrate, whereas the lack of adequate catalysts hampers the development of NO3-RR. Here, we firstly demonstrate that the Pd nanocrystalline with a well-desired facet can act as a highly efficient NO3-RR electrocatalyst for ambient ammonia synthesis. Pd (111) exhibits excellent activity and selectivity in reducing NO3- to NH4+ with a Faradaic efficiency of 79.91% and an NH4+ production of 0.5485 mmol h-1 cm-2 (2.74 mmol h-1 mg-1) in 0.1 M Na2SO4 (containing 0.1 M NO3-), which is 1.4 times higher than Pd (100) and 1.9 times higher than Pd (110), respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the superior NO3-RR activity of Pd (111) originates from its optimized activity of NO3- adsorption, smaller free energy change of the rate-limiting step (*NH3 to NH3), and poorer hydrogen evolution reaction activity (HER, competitive reaction). This work not only highlights the potentials of Pd-based nanocatalysts for NO3-RR but also provides new insight for the applications in NO3-RR of other facet-orientation nanomaterials.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrite (NO2 -) reduction to ammonia (NH3) is a promising method for reducing pollution and aiding industrial production. However, progress is limited by the lack of efficient selective catalysts and ambiguous catalytic mechanisms. This study explores the loading of PdCu alloy onto oxygen defective TiO2-x, resulting in a significant increase in NH3 yield (from 70.6 to 366.4 µmol cm-2 h-1 at -0.6 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode) by modulating localized electron density. In situ and operando studies illustrate that the reduction of NO2 - to NH3 involves gradual deoxygenation and hydrogenation. The process also demonstrated excellent selectivity and stability, with long-term durability in cycling and 50 h stability tests. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate that the introduction of PdCu alloys further amplified electron density at oxygen vacancies (Ovs). Additionally, the Ti─O bond is strengthened as the d-band center of the Ti 3d rising after PdCu loading, facilitating the adsorption and activation of *NO2. Moreover, the presence of Ovs and PdCu alloy lowers the energy barriers for deoxygenation and hydrogenation, leading to high yield and selectivity of NH3. This insight of controlling localized electron density offers valuable insights for advancing sustainable NH3 synthesis methods.

Abstract:Developing better three-way catalysts with improved low-temperature performance is essential for cold start emission control. Density functional theory in combination with microkinetics simulations is used to predict reactivity of CO/NO/H2 mixtures on a small Pd cluster on CeO2(111). At low temperatures, N2O formation occurs via a N2O2 dimer over metallic Pd3. Part of the N2O intermediate product re-oxidizes Pd, limiting NO conversion and requiring rich conditions to obtain high N2 selectivity. High N2 selectivity at elevated temperatures is due to N2O decomposition on oxygen vacancies. Doping CeO2 by Fe is predicted to lead to more oxygen vacancies and a higher N2 selectivity, which is validated by the lower onset of N2 formation for a Pd catalyst supported on Fe-doped CeO2 prepared by flame spray pyrolysis. Activating ceria surface oxygen by transition metal doping is a promising strategy to improve the performance of three-way catalysts.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Compared to the Ag/Al2O3 catalyst, a two-stage catalyst composed of an Ag/Al2O3 layer followed by a Sn/Al2O3 layer shows higher low-temperature activity and a wider temperature window. Its activity below 350degreesC is enhanced in the presence Of SO2. Even in the presence of H2O and SO2, the performance of the same catalytic system is still satisfactory.

Abstract:We demonstrate how shape selectivity and optimized surface composition result in exceptional oxygen reduction activity of octahedral PtNi nanoparticles (NPs). The alloy octahedra were obtained by utilizing a facile, completely surfactant-free solvothermal synthesis. We show that the choice of precursor ligands controls the shape, while the reaction time tunes the surface Pt:Ni composition. The 9.5 nm sized PtNi octahedra reached a 10-fold surface area-specific (similar to 3.14 mA/cm(Pt)(2)) as well as an unprecedented 10-fold Pt mass based (similar to 1.45 A/mg(Pt)) activity gain over the state-of-art Pt electrocatalyst, approaching the theoretically predicted limits.

Abstract:Bimetallic 15 nm Pd-core Rh-shell Rh1−x Pd x nanoparticle catalysts have been synthesized and studied in CO oxidation by NO. The catalysts exhibited composition-dependent activity enhancement (synergy) in CO oxidation in high NO pressures. The observed synergetic effect is attributed to the favorable adsorption of CO on Pd in NO-rich conditions. The Pd-rich bimetallic catalysts deactivated after many hours of oxidation of CO by NO. After catalyst deactivation, product formation was proportional to the Rh molar fraction within the bimetallic nanoparticles. The deactivated catalysts were regenerated by heating the sample in UHV. This regeneration suggests that the deactivation was caused by the adsorption of nitrogen atoms on Pd sites.
