Abstract:The mining industry generates a notable amount of mine tailings (MTs). Disposal of MTs creates environmental impacts such as air pollution and the release of heavy metals into surface and underground water. The European Union (EU)-funded project “Integrated mineral technologies for more sustainable raw material supply” (ITERAMS) includes an effort to produce eco-friendly backfill materials to enhance operation and mine safety and covers for surface deposits of tailings based on geopolymerization technology. This paper investigates the effects of activator concentration, curing temperature and time on alkali-activated materials based on low-alumina MTs from the Cu/Ni mine in Northern Finland. Alkaline activators containing sodium silicate solution (Na2SiO3) at different concentrations were used and two different curing temperatures, 40 °C and 60 °C, for periods of 7, 14, and 28 days were considered. Scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed to investigate the structure, morphology and phase compositions of the alkali-activated products. The effect of curing temperature and alkaline solutions on mechanical strength and water absorption were investigated. The results indicate that the alkalinity and curing temperature affect the mechanical and microstructural properties of the compositions of alkali-activated MTs. The 30 wt% Na2SiO3 addition enables the alkali activated MT to improve the compressive strength with a highest value of 6.44 and 15.70 MPa after 28 days of curing at 40 °C and 60 °C, respectively. The results of this study deliver useful information for recycling and utilization of MTs as sustainable material through the alkali activation.Graphic Abstract

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: how to reduce the environmental impact of mine tailings (MTs) with low aluminum content through alkaline activation treatment and transform them into materials with practical value. Specifically, the research aims to explore the effects of different activator concentrations, curing temperatures and times on the microstructure, elemental composition and mechanical properties of alkaline - activated materials of mine tailings with low aluminum content. ### Research Background and Problem Description The mining industry generates a large amount of mine tailings (MTs) every year. These tailings will cause environmental pollution during the disposal process, such as air pollution and heavy metal infiltration into surface water and groundwater. In order to address these problems, researchers attempt to transform mine tailings into environmentally - friendly backfill materials through alkaline activation technology, thereby improving the safety and environmental protection of mining operations. ### Research Objectives The main purpose of this paper is to study the effects of using alkaline activators (such as sodium silicate solution) with different concentrations, different curing temperatures and times on the morphology, elemental composition and mechanical properties of mine tailings with low aluminum content. Specifically, the research focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Activator Concentration**: Study the effects of different concentrations of sodium silicate solution (Na₂SiO₃) on alkaline - activated mine tailings (AAMTs). 2. **Curing Conditions**: Study the effects of different curing temperatures (40°C and 60°C) and times (7 days, 14 days and 28 days) on the mechanical properties and microstructure of AAMTs. 3. **Mechanical Properties**: Evaluate the mechanical properties of AAMTs through compression tests and three - point bending tests. 4. **Microstructure Analysis**: Analyze the microstructure and phase composition of AAMTs using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X - ray diffraction (XRD). ### Key Findings - **Mechanical Properties**: The research shows that increasing the concentration of sodium silicate solution can significantly improve the compressive strength and flexural strength of AAMTs. In particular, when cured at 60°C for 28 days, AAMTs with 30 wt% Na₂SiO₃ added exhibit the highest compressive strength (15.70 MPa). - **Microstructure**: SEM and XRD analyses show that as the concentration of sodium silicate solution increases, the microstructure of AAMTs becomes more compact, and more C - S - H (calcium silicate hydrate) and M - S - H (magnesium silicate hydrate) phases are formed, which helps to improve the mechanical properties of the material. - **Environmental Benefits**: Through alkaline activation technology, mine tailings can be effectively utilized, reducing their negative environmental impacts and being used as a sustainable material for construction and other applications. In conclusion, this research provides a new way for the recycling of mine tailings, that is, transforming them into building materials with high mechanical properties and environmental friendliness through alkaline activation technology.
