Abstract:Wireless sensor technology is a facile way of realizing low cost and miniaturized device for the detection of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A wireless electrodeless quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (WE-QCM-D) sensor array was developed by using a single sensor working in a multi-resonance mode, which obtained an acoustic spectra of the quartz crystal at four harmonics (6 MHz, 18 MHz, 30 MHz and 42 MHz). Multi-responses (frequency shift, and energy dissipation) of WE-QCM-D sensor array were obtained via a ring-down mode and employed as discrimination factors for VOCs. The gas discrimination capability of the WE-QCM-D sensor array has been tested by coating a 100 mu g polyvinylpyrrolidone film on the quartz disc and achieved an optimal recognition rate of 97.5 % with K nearest neighbor algorithm. The results indicate that the single element WE-QCM-D sensor array could be a promising way to realize compact and low-cost VOCs monitoring systems. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper is focused on the template-free synthesis of nanosized ferric oxide (nano-Fe2O3) and its application in quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) resonators to detect dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), a simulant of Sarin. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirm that the synthesized samples are made of Fe2O3 and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures show that the samples have ball-like shapes. The DMMP sensors with a sensing film of hollow ball-like and solid ball-like Fe2O3 are fabricated and their sensing characteristics are compared. The sensitivity of the hollow ball-like Fe2O3 sensor is more than 500% higher than the one of the solid ball-like Fe2O3 sensor. The hollow ball-like nano-Fe2O3 can be synthesized by a novel low temperature hydrothermal method. The sensors with the hollow ball-like Fe2O3 film perform well in a range of 1 to 6 ppm, with a sensitivity of 29 Hz/ppm at room temperature, while the appropriate recoverability and selectivity are maintained. In addition, the performance of different thicknesses of the sensing film of the hollow ball-like nano-Fe2O3 is investigated and the optimized relative film thickness of the hollow ball-like nano-Fe2O3 is found to be 20 mu g/mm(2).

Abstract:In order to enhance the sensitivity of carbon nanotube based chemical sensors at room temperature operation, CNTs/CuO nanocomposite was prepared under hydrothermal reaction condition. The resulted-product was characterized with TEM (transmission electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and so on. A chemical prototype sensor was constructed based on CNTs/CuO nanocomposite and an interdigital electrode on flexible polymer substrate. The gas-sensing behavior of the sensor to some typical organic volatiles was investigated at room temperature operation. The results indicated that the carbon nanotube was dispersed well in CuO matrix, the CuO was uniformly coated on the surface of carbon nanotube, and the tubular structure of carbon nanotube was clearly observed. From morphology of TEM images, it can also be observed that a good interfacial adhesion between CNT and CuO matrix was formed, which maybe due to the results of strong interaction between CNTs with carboxyl groups and CuO containing some hydroxy groups. The CNTs/CuO nanocomposite showed dramatically enhanced sensitivity to some typical organic volatiles. This study would provide a simple, low-cost and general approach to functionalize the carbon nanotube. It is also in favor of developing chemical sensors with high sensitivity or catalysts with high activity to organic volatiles at low temperature.

Abstract:A QCM device employing ionic liquids as the sensing materials for organic vapors has been developed and evaluated. The sensing mechanism is based on the fact that the viscosity of the ionic liquid membrane decreases rapidly due to solubilization of analytes in the ionic liquids. This change in viscosity, which varies with the chemical species of the vapors and the types of ionic liquids, results in a frequency shift of the corresponding quartz crystal. The QCM sensor demonstrated a rapid response (average response time of less than 2 s) to organic vapors with an excellent reversibility because of the fast diffusion of analytes in ionic liquids. Furthermore, the ionic liquids, with zero vapor pressure and stable chemical properties, ensure a long-term shelf life for the sensor.
Nanoporous Functionalized WS2/MWCNTs Nanocomposite for Trimethylamine Detection Based on Quartz Crystal Microbalance Gas Sensor

Abstract:We have developed a tungsten disulfide (WS2)/multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposite based QCM gas sensor for (trimethylamine) TMA gas sensing of low concentrations. WS2/MWCNTs nanocomposite was synthesized via the hydrothermal method and was characterized for surface morphology, nanostructure, thermal stability, and elementary composition. The TMA-sensing properties of WS2/MWCNTs nanocomposite based QCM sensor were investigated. The composite based QCM sensor showed faster response time, strong response amplitude, good gas capacity, and good selectivity and stability compared with as prepared WS2 and MWCNTs-1 based QCM sensor. The response time of WS2/MWCNTs based QCM sensor was 294.1 and 142.9 s shorter than WS2 and MWCNTs-1 for 500 ppb TMA gas. And the response of the WS2/MWCNTs based QCM sensor was almost stable over 40 days, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 76 ppb calculated by the ICH method. This was ascribed to the fact that MWCNTs provided a skeleton for the growth of WS2 nanosheets and avoided agglomeration. The special structure could not only improve the structure ability but also expose more active adsorption sites. In order to further investigate the adsorption mechanism of the TMA molecule on (pure/functionalized) WS2 materials, density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on first-principle were conducted in the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package under ideal conditions.
MOF/PDMS Hybrid Nanofilm-based QCM for VOC Selective Virtual Sensing in High-Humidity Environments

Abstract:As one of the most promising gravimetric gas sensors, the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor can effectively detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with high selectivity based on the virtual sensor array (VSA) technique. However, the susceptibility of the chemical sensing material to water molecules limits the applications in high-humidity environments such as urban underground pipeline galleries. Herein, we propose a novel QCM VOC sensor coated with a hydrophobic sensing layer of MOF/PDMS hybrid nanofilm. A modified selective virtual sensing (SVS) technique is also proposed to create high dimensional vectors by combining the resonant signal features and lumped parameters, which can be used to generate distinctive features under various concentrations of 5 different VOCs. Experimental results show that the sensitivity to relative humidity (RH) has been lowered to nearly 25% with the help of the few nanometer-thick PDMS coating. The presented work may enable qualitative and quantitative analysis of VOC compounds in the high RH environment.

Abstract:In this study, electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polypyrrole (PPy) nanofibers (NFs) coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) were investigated for their sensing characteristics against six different volatile organic compounds (VOCs): chloroform, dichloromethane, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene and xylene. SEM, TEM, FT-IR and TGA analysis were carried out for the characterization of PAN/PPy nanofibers and characterization results of PAN/PPy NFs showed that these nanofibers were morphologically well-arranged and straightforward with a cylindrical shape with the average fiber diameter of 253.17 ± 27 nm. Among all the gas measurement tests, dichloromethane displayed the highest response values for PAN/PPy coated QCM sensors. When the reproducibility of kinetic studies for PAN/PPy NFs coated QCM sensors were examined, the most repetitive results were obtained by this QCM sensor during dichloromethane investigation and the diffusion coefficients of VOCs for the first and second regions increased with the order of xylene < toluene < benzene < carbontetrachloride < chloroform < dichloromethane. The sensitivities of the PAN/PPy nanofibers-coated QCM sensor against organic vapors are determined between 4.71 and 6.17 (Hz ppm −1 ) × 10 –4 . As a result, PAN/PPy nanofibers exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for VOCs sensor applications, especially for dichloromethane.

Abstract:Semiconducting metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors have emerged as invaluable technology due to their high sensitivity and ease of fabrication. However, they have limited selectivity and require relatively high operational temperatures. Here, we present a monolithic membrane-chemoresistive sensor consisting of a hierarchical metal oxide (MO) and a metal-organic frameworks (MOF) layer. Both layers were made by sequential aerosol deposition of SnO 2 and ZnO nanoparticles, with the latter being thereafter converted to zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) by chemical vapour conversion. The SnO 2 fractal network provides high surface area for chemical sensing, while the multi-scale porous ZIF-8 membrane offers a controlled gateway for gas molecule diffusion. Notably, our hierarchical dual-layer architecture can tune the analyte sensor response time, allowing discrimination of a variety of gases, including NO 2 , ethanol, acetone, methanol, propane, and ethyl benzene. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were implemented to gain further insights into the selectivity mechanism revealing the key role of surface adsorption sites. This approach enables us to develop unique response profiles, fingerprinting the presence of specific gas molecules, with application ranging from industrial safety to environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics.

Abstract:Public awareness of the toxicity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has led to increased requirements for direct measurement of these substances. This work reports the sensitive detection of VOCs at the ppb level by an interferometric sensor based on the multilayer silica-nanochannel membrane (MSNM). The MSNM is fabricated by layer-by-layer stacking of a free-standing ultrathin SNM composed of regularly ordered channels with an ultrasmall diameter of about 2.3 nm and an ultrahigh density of about 4 x 10(12) cm(-2). Light reflected from parallel interfaces of the MSNM gives rise to the interferometric pattern with constructive and destructive fringes. The adsorption of VOCs to a highly porous MSNM varies the refractive index of the MSNM, resulting in the shift of the reflectometric interference spectrum (RIS) and thus yielding highly sensitive responses with a limit of detection (LOD) at the ppb level. Moreover, the sensor selectively responds to polar ethanol and acetone, as well as aromatic benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene, but is insensitive to nonpolar ethane or hexane. The selectivity most likely arises from hydrogen bonding and dipole interaction of VOCs with silica surface.
An ultra-sensitive ammonia sensor based on a quartz crystal microbalance using nanofibers overlaid with carboxylic group-functionalized MWCNTs

Abstract:Detecting ammonia at low concentrations is crucial in various fields, including environmental monitoring, industrial processes, and healthcare. This study explores the development and performance of an ultra-sensitive ammonia sensor using carboxylic group-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) overlaid on polyvinyl acetate nanofibers coated on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The sensor demonstrates high responsiveness, with a frequency shift response of over 120 Hz when exposed to 1.5 ppm ammonia, a sensitivity of 23.3 Hz ppm-1 over a concentration range of 1.5-7.5 ppm, and a detection limit of 50 ppb. Additionally, the sensor exhibits a rapid response time of only 14 s, excellent selectivity against other gases, such as acetic acid, formaldehyde, methanol, ethanol, propanol, benzene, toluene, and xylene, and good stability in daily use. These characteristics make the sensor a promising tool for real-time ammonia detection in diverse applications.

Abstract:Chemiresistive sensing of gas molecules has been widely investigated for application in medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring, showing high sensitivity and low limits of detection toward various volatile organic compounds. While metal oxide semiconductors offer numerous advantages, such as ease of fabrication, high sensitivity, and fast response times, they often suffer of high insufficient selectivity. Here, we report the engineering of a low-temperature sensing platform consisting of nanostructured zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) over InP semiconducting nanowire (NW) arrays. These devices were fabricated via top-down etching of InP NW arrays, aerosol deposition of flame-made ZnO nanoparticles, and their chemical vapor conversion to ZIF-8. The presence of ZIF-8 significantly enhances the device sensitivity over that of the pristine InP NW arrays by providing a high density of adsorption sites and faster reduction kinetics. Our optimal sensors can detect NO2 in a large concentration range from 0.1 to 8 ppm, in addition to showing relatively higher responses toward various gas molecules, including CO2, methanol, ethanol, acetone, and propane, in comparison with pristine InP NW sensors. Given the large family of MOFs with controllable pore size and chemical composition, our findings provide a flexible approach for engineering the selectivity of highly sensitive and miniaturized gas sensors for integration in miniaturized devices.

Abstract:The severity of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) issue calls for effective detection and management of VOC materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are organic-inorganic hybrid crystals with promising prospects in luminescent sensing for VOC detection and identification. However, MOFs have limitations, including weak response signals and poor sensitivity towards VOCs, limiting their application to specific types of VOC gases. To address the issue of limited recognition and single luminosity for specific VOCs, we have introduced fluorescent guest molecules into MOFs as reference emission centers to enhance sensitivity. This composite material combines the gas adsorption ability of MOFs to effectively adsorb VOCs. We utilized (MIL-125/NH2-MIL-125) as the parent material for adsorbing fluorescent molecules and selected suitable solid fluorescent probes (FGFL-B1) through fluorescence enhancement using thioflavin T and MIL-125. FGFL-B1 exhibited a heightened fluorescence response to various VOCs through charge transfer between fluorescent guest molecules and ligands. The fluorescence enhancement effect of FGFL-B1 on tetrahydrofuran (THF) was particularly pronounced, accompanied by a color change from yellow to yellowish green in the presence of CCl4. FGFL-B1 demonstrated excellent adsorption properties for THF and CCl4, with saturated adsorption capacities of 655.4 mg g-1 and 811.2 mg g-1, respectively. Furthermore, FGFL-B1 displayed strong luminescence stability and reusability, making it an excellent sensing candidate. This study addresses the limitations of MOFs in VOC detection, opening avenues for industrial and environmental applications.
Mesoporous-Structure MOF-14-Based QCM p-Xylene Gas Sensor

Abstract:In this work, a facile synthesis method was adopted to synthesize MOF-14 with mesoporous structure. The physical properties of the samples were characterized by PXRD, FESEM, TEM and FT-IR spectrometry. By coating the mesoporous-structure MOF-14 on the surface of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), the fabricated gravimetric sensor exhibits high sensitivity to p-toluene vapor even at trace levels. Additionally, the limit of detection (LOD) of the sensor obtained experimentally is lower than 100 ppb, and the theoretical detection limit is 57 ppb. Furthermore, good gas selectivity and fast response (15 s) and recovery (20 s) abilities are also illustrated along with high sensitivity. These sensing data indicate the excellent performance of the fabricated mesoporous-structure MOF-14-based p-xylene QCM sensor. On the basis of temperature-varying experiments, an adsorption enthalpy of −59.88 kJ/mol was obtained, implying the existence of moderate and reversible chemisorption between MOF-14 and p-xylene molecules. This is the crucial factor that endows MOF-14 with exceptional p-xylene-sensing abilities. This work has proved that MOF materials such as MOF-14 are promising in gravimetric-type gas-sensing applications and worthy of future study.

Abstract:Many research groups have been interested in the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based gas sensors due to their superb sensitivity originated from direct mass sensing at the ng level. Despite such high sensitivities observed from QCM sensors, their ability to identify gas compounds still needs to be enhanced. Herein, we report a highly facile method that utilizes microcolumns integrated on a QCM gas-responsive system with enhanced chemical selectivity for sensing and ability to identify volatile organic compound single gases. Graphene oxide (GO) flakes are coated on the QCM electrode to substantially increase the adsorption of gas molecules, and periodic polydimethylsiloxane microcolumns with micrometer-scale width and height were installed on the GO-coated QCM electrode. The observed frequency shifts upon sensing of various single gas molecules (such as ethanol, acetone, hexane, etc.) can be analyzed accurately using a simple exponential model. The QCM sensor system with and without the microcolumn both exhibited high detection response values above 50 ng/cm2 for sensing of the gases. Notably, the QCM sensor equipped with the microcolumn features gas identification ability, which is observed as distinct diverging behavior of time constants upon detection of different gases caused by the difference in diffusional transfer of molecules through the microcolumns. For example, the difference in the calculated time constant between ethanol and acetone increased from 22.6 to 92.1 s after installation of the microcolumn. This approach provides an easy and efficient method for identification of single gases, and it may be applied in various advanced sensor systems to enhance their gas selectivity.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) sensing using an optical technique is of great importance in the environment and industrial emission monitoring. However, limited by the poor specific adsorption of gas molecules as well as insufficient coupling efficiency, there is still a long way to go toward realizing a highly sensitive optical CO(2 )gas sensor. Herein, by combining the advantages of a whispering-gallery-mode microcavity and a metal-organic framework (MOF) film, a porous functional microcavity (PF-MC) was fabricated with the assistance of the atomic layer deposition technique and was applied to CO2 sensing. In this functional composite, the rolled-up microcavity provides the ability to tune the propagation of light waves and the electromagnetic coupling with the surroundings via an evanescent field, while the nanoporous MOF film contributes to the specific adsorption of CO2. The composite demonstrates a high sensitivity of 188 RIU-1 nm (7.4 pm/% with respect to the CO2 concentration) and a low detection limit of similar to 5.85 x 10(-5) RIU. Furthermore, the PF-MC exhibits great selectivity to CO2 and outstanding reproducibility, which is promising for the next-generation optical gas sensing devices.
Facile Synthesis of ZnO/WO3 Nanocomposite Porous Films for High-Performance Gas Sensing of Multiple VOCs

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments have typical features of multiple components, high concentration, and long duration. The development of gas sensors with high sensitivity to multiple VOCs is of great significance to protect human health. Herein, we proposed a sensitive ZnO/WO3 composite chemi-resistive sensor facilely fabricated via a sacrificial template approach. Based on the transferable properties of self-assembled monolayer colloidal crystal (MCC) templates, two-dimensional honeycomb-like ordered porous ZnO/WO3 sensing matrixes were constructed in situ on commercial ceramic tube substrates with curved and rough surfaces. The nanocomposite thin films are about 250 nm in thickness with large-scale structural consistency and integrity, which facilitates characteristic responses with highly sensitivity and reliability. Furthermore, the nanocomposite sensor shows simultaneous responses to multiple VOCs that commonly exist in daily life with an obvious suppression sensing for traditional flammable gases. Particularly, a detection limit of 0.1 ppm with a second-level response/recovery time can be achieved, which is beneficial for real-time air quality assessments. We proposed a heterojunction-induced sensing enhancement mechanism for the ZnO/WO3 nanocomposite film in which the formation of abundant heterojunctions between ZnO and WO3 NPs significantly increases the thickness of the electron depletion layer in the bulk film and improves the formation of active oxygen species on the surface, which is conducive to enhanced responses for reducing VOC gases. This work not only provides a simple approach for the fabrication of high-performance gas sensors but also opens an achievable avenue for air quality assessment based on VOC concentration detection.
