Abstract:This study creates a new colloidal multiple quantum wells (CMQWs) based on Dion–Jacobson (D–J) structure perovskite by introducing diammonium cation. Through regulating phase distribution by valeric acid and zwitterionic lecithin, pure deep‐blue emission at 435 nm is achieved. The D–J structural CMQWs exhibit inherent superior stability which opens a new direction for fabricating stable perovskite optoelectronics. Metal halide perovskite colloidal quantum wells (CQWs) hold great promise for modern photonics and optoelectronics. However, current studies focus on Ruddlesden–Popper (R–P) phase perovskite CQWs that contain bilayers of monovalent long‐chain alkylamomoniums between the separated perovskite octahedra layers. The bilayers are packed back‐to‐back via weak van der Waals interaction, resulting in inferior charge carrier transport and easier decomposition of perovskite. This report first creates a new type of perovskite colloidal multiple QWs (CMQWs) in the form of Dion–Jacobson (D–J) structure by introducing an asymmetric diammonium cation. Furthermore, the phase distribution is optimized by the synergistic effect of valeric acid and zwitterionic lecithin, finally achieving pure deep‐blue emission at 435 nm with narrow full width at half maximum. The diammonium layer in D–J perovskite CMQWs features extremely short width of only ≈0.6 nm, thereby contributing to more effective charge carrier transport and higher stability. Through the continuous photoluminescence (PL) measurement and corresponding theoretical calculation, the higher stability of D–J perovskite CMQWs than that of R–P structural CMQWs is confirmed. This work reveals the inherent superior stability of D–J structural CMQWs, which opens a new direction for fabricating stable perovskite optoelectronics.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have shown outstanding optoelectronic and nonlinear optical properties; yet, to realize wafer-scale high-performance perovskite-integrated photonics, the materials also need to have excellent ambient stability and compatibility with nanofabrication processes. In this work, we introduce Dion-Jacobson (D-J) phase perovskites for photonic device applications. By combining self-assembled monolayer-assisted film growth with thermal pressing, we obtain a series of compact and extremely smooth D-J phase perovskite thin films that exhibit excellent stability during electron-beam lithography, solvent development, and rinse. Combining spectroscopic and morphological characterizations, we further demonstrate how organic spacers can be used to fine-tune the photophysical properties and processability of the perovskite films. The distributed-feedback lasers based on the D-J phase perovskites exhibit a low lasing threshold (5.5 μJ cm −2 pumped with nanosecond laser), record high Q factor (up to 30,000), and excellent stability, with an unencapsulated device demonstrating a T 90 beyond 60 hours in ambient conditions (50% relative humidity).

Abstract:Low-dimensional perovskites formed with the assistance of organic cations as interlayers have been widely used to fabricate high-performance light-emitting diode devices, attributing to their dielectric and quantum-confinement effects and rapid energy transfer process. However, ion migration at perovskite grain boundaries and the dissociation of ligands induced by the "van der Waals" gaps between large organic cations are disadvantageous to the stability of perovskite light-emitting diodes. Here, crosslinkable 3-butenylamine hydrochloride is introduced in quasi-2D perovskites that will crosslink at the grain boundaries and between layered perovskites upon thermal annealing, which suppresses ion migration, reduces interlayer space, and passivates defects. The optimized device exhibits enhanced maximum luminance of 20 177 cd m−2, current efficiency of 17.5 cd A−1, external quantum efficiency of 5.2%, and 1.6 times increment of T50 lifetime. The organic cation crosslinking strategy is therefore a promising approach to enhance the efficiency as well as stability of layered perovskite devices.

Abstract:2D layered perovskites have emerged as potential alternates to traditional 3D analogs to solve the stability issue of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, van der Waals gaps in reported Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase 2D perovskites with monoammonium cations provide weak interactions between layers, potentially destabilizing the layered perovskite structure and thus the device. Here we eradicate such gaps by incorporating diammonium cations into MAPbI3, developing a series of Dion-Jacobson phase 2D perovskites that afford a cell efficiency of 13.3% with ultrahigh device stability. Unencapsulated devices retain over 95% efficiency upon exposure to various harsh stresses including ambient air (40%–70% relative humidity [RH]) for 4,000 hr, damp heat (85°C and 85% RH) for 168 hr, and continuous light illumination for 3,000 hr. The improved device stability over the RP counterpart is attributed to alternating hydrogen bonding interactions between diammonium cations and inorganic slabs, strengthening the 2D layered perovskite structure.

Abstract:Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on perovskite semiconductor materials with tunable emission wavelength in visible light range as well as narrow linewidth are potential competitors among current light-emitting display technologies, but still suffer from severe instability driven by electric field. Here, we develop a stable, efficient and high-color purity hybrid LED with a tandem structure by combining the perovskite LED and the commercial organic LED technologies to accelerate the practical application of perovskites. Perovskite LED and organic LED with close photoluminescence peak are selected to maximize photon emission without photon reabsorption and to achieve the narrowed emission spectra. By designing an efficient interconnecting layer with p-type interface doping that provides good opto-electric coupling and reduces Joule heating, the resulting green emitting hybrid LED shows a narrow linewidth of around 30 nm, a peak luminance of over 176,000 cd m −2 , a maximum external quantum efficiency of over 40%, and an operational half-lifetime of over 42,000 h.

Abstract:Abstract Despite the demonstrated high-efficiency of solar cells and light-emitting devices based on two-dimensional (2D) perovskites, intrinsic stability of the 2D perovskites is yet far from satisfactory. In this work, we find the 2D (BA) 2 PbI 4 perovskite crystals rapidly degrade in the ambient conditions and the photoluminescence (PL) nearly completely quenches in 6 d. Moreover, the PL shoulder band due to defects and absorption band of PbI 2 gradually rise during degradation, suggesting the precipitation of PbI 2 . Besides, rod structures are observed in the degraded crystals, which are attributed to the formation of one-dimensional (1D) (BA) 3 PbI 5 perovskites. And the degradation can be largely retarded by decreasing the humidity during storage. Therefore, a chemical reaction for the degradation of (BA) 2 PbI 4 is proposed, revealing the interactions between water molecules and undercoordinated defects are very critical for understanding the degradation. Enlightened by these findings, dimethyl itaconate (DI) treatment is developed to passivate the defects and block the intrusion of moisture to improve the stability of the (BA) 2 PbI 4 . After storage in the ambient environment for 16 d, the DI treated (BA) 2 PbI 4 only shows a slight surface degradation without formation of any nanorod-like structures, and the PL intensity retains about 70%. Therefore, our systematic study provides a comprehensive understanding on the degradation dynamics of 2D perovskites, which will promote future development of intrinsically stable 2D perovskites.

Abstract:Stability is one of the major issues for hybrid organic–inorganic halide perovskites. In the organic aspect, increased hydrophobicity can be beneficial to the enhanced stability. Different from the previous R group hydrophobic modification in an organic R-NH3 + cation, herein, NH3 + modification using epoxide is reported to improve the stability of hybrid halide perovskites. We integrate the chiral propylene oxide (PO) into HDAPbI4 (HDA = 1,6-hexamethylenediamine) through the grafting of PO onto HDA. The −NH3 + hydrophobic modification is very favorable for stability improvement. As a result, the resultant (R/S-PO-HDA)PbI4 thin film is stable in water for more than 1 h, whereas the untreated HDAPbI4 thin film decomposes immediately. Moreover, (R/S-PO-HDA)PbI4 could keep the photoelectricity of HDAPbI4 and the chirality of PO. This work could inspire further study on the perovskite-based epoxide polymer.

Abstract:Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phase 2D perovskites have received wide attention due to their higher stability compared with 3D ones. However, some of the reported DJ 2D perovskites are not really robust, leading to a controversy over their stability. This necessitates clarification of the ambiguous stability mechanism. We herein elucidate that the stability of DJ 2D perovskites is determined by the rigidity of organic cations, which can induce co-adaptation of organic diammonium cations and inorganic [PbI6]4− octahedra to stabilize the 2D structure. By comparing three DJ 2D perovskites containing high-, medium-, and low-rigidity cations, we find that the medium-rigidity cation-based one presents higher structural stability. The finding is attributed to the appropriate cation rigidity, which enables organic diammoniums and inorganic octahedra to regulate their geometries to accommodate each other. This work explains the stability mechanism of DJ 2D perovskites and provides guidance for constructing highly stable candidates by adjusting the rigidity of organic cations.

Abstract:The noteworthy stability of Dion–Jacobson (DJ) phase two-dimensional perovskites marks them as potential contenders for use in optoelectronic applications. Nonetheless, their proliferation is considerably stymied by the constrained charge transport properties inherent to them. This bottleneck is adeptly navigated by deploying 2D-DJ perovskite top layers, seamlessly integrated on 3D perovskite films. We unveil a novel organic cation salt, 4-(Aminomethyl)piperidine (4AMP), as a potent facilitator for treating perovskite photovoltaic films. By employing the annealing technique, we facilitated the in situ creation of a hybrid 2D/3D architecture. Contrasted with conventional 3D architectures, the delineated perovskite heterojunctions with a 2D/3D structure exhibit superior enhanced charge separation, and mitigate photovoltaic losses by proficiently passivating intrinsic defects. The size-graded perovskite 2D/3D structure engineered herein significantly elevates the charge transfer performance, concurrently attenuating the excess lead iodide induced by bulk defects. This precise method resulted in a significant increase in Power Conversion Efficiency, reaching 23.08%, along with an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.17 V. Remarkably, the unpackaged modified device robustly retains 92% of its initial PCE post a 3000 h sojourn under ambient conditions. This discourse propounds a novel paradigm for constructing stable planar PSC 2D/3D heterojunctions, thereby enriching the blueprint for advanced perovskite-based photovoltaic systems.

Abstract:2D Dion–Jacobson (DJ) perovskites have become an emerging photovoltaic material with excellent structure and environmental stability due to their lacking van der Waals gaps relative to 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites. Here, a fused-thiophene-based spacer, namely TTDMAI, is successfully developed for 2D DJ perovskite solar cells. It is found that the DJ perovskite using TTDMA spacer with extended π-conjugation length exhibits high film quality, large crystal size and preferred crystal vertical orientation induced by the large crystal nuclei in precursor solution, resulting in lower trap density, reduced exciton binding energy and oriented charge transport. As a result, the optimized 2D DJ perovskite device based on TTDMA (nominal n = 4) delivers a champion PCE up to 18.82%. Importantly, the unencapsulated device based on TTDMA can sustain average 99% of their original efficiency after being stored in N2 for 4400 h (over 6 months). Moreover, light, thermal, environmental and operational stabilities are also significantly improved in comparison with their 3D counterparts.

Abstract:With the advance of nanotechnology, the past couple of years have witnessed the fast development of quasi two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites, which exhibit outstanding long-term stability against moisture and heat, compared with their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts. As one of the most common structures in 2D halide perovskites, quasi-2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites show multiple-quantum-well structures with n layers of [BX6]4- octahedral inorganic sheets sandwiched by two layers of diammonium spacers, thus exhibiting superior structural stability due to the elimination of van der Waals gaps. Thanks to the achievement of high power conversion efficiency accompanied by impressive stability, quasi-2D DJ perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently drawn extensive attention in the field. This review first introduces the fundamental understanding of quasi-2D DJ halide perovskites, including their superior stability, high exciton binding energy, and compositional flexibility and tunable properties. We then summarize detailed strategies to prepare high-quality quasi-2D DJ perovskites for PSCs, encompassing compositional engineering, solvent engineering, additive addition, and annealing processes. Moreover, the surface/interface modification and 2D-3D hybrid perovskite heterojunction are also discussed, for providing strategies to optimize the fabrication of quasi-2D DJ PSCs. Lastly, current challenges and perspectives toward the future development of quasi-2D DJ perovskites for photovoltaics are outlined.
Mixing Dion–Jacobson and Ruddlesden–Popper Structures in Quasi‐2D Perovskite Films for Thermal‐ and Photo‐Stable Stimulated Emission

Abstract:Quasi‐2D perovskite films with mixed Dion–Jacobson (D–J) and Ruddlesden–Popper structures are used to achieve high‐performance stimulated emission. The film exhibits excellent thermal and photo‐stabilities with a low amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold. The formation of the D–J structure stabilizes the perovskite films and maintains good ASE properties under harsh conditions. Quasi‐two–dimensional (2D) perovskite films are promising candidates as a gain medium for stimulated emission owing to their hydrophobicity and efficient energy funneling that facilitates the population inversion. However, the commonly used Ruddlesden–Popper (R–P) perovskites still suffer from instability induced by high‐density pumping as well as the resulting heating effect. Here, quasi‐2D perovskite films with mixed Dion–Jacobson (D–J) and R–P phases are demonstrated with both excellent amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties and thermal‐ and photo‐stabilities under ambient conditions. In these films, octyl ammonium bulky organic cations are used to obtain the preferred crystal orientation and highly smooth surface for low‐threshold ASE, while 1,8‐octanedi ammonium cations contribute to the greatly improved stability. The films containing the D–J phase exhibit good structural stability even after 130 °C heat treatment for 48 h. The mixed‐ligands film maintains a low ASE threshold of 11.6 μJ cm−2 and a high optical gain of 413 cm−1 after environmental annealing. It is demonstrated that it is the diammonium that firmly bonds to the perovskite layer,allowing the maintenance of quasi‐2D perovskite structure and good ASE performances.

Abstract:Two-dimensional Dion–Jacobson (DJ) perovskites have shown improved structure stability in comparison with Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) perovskites. However, the mechanism behind the improved stability is still largely unexplored. Here a multifluorinated aromatic spacer, namely, 4F-PhDMA, has been successfully developed for 2D DJ perovskites. It is found that the 2D DJ perovskite with a 4F-PhDMA spacer exhibits a high dissociation energy due to the multiple noncovalent interactions. The optimized 2D DJ device based on the 4F-PhDMA spacer (n = 4) exhibits a champion efficiency of 16.62% with much improved light and thermal stability. This efficiency is much higher than that of the control device using an unfluorinated spacer (n = 4, PCE = 10.11%) and is among the highest efficiencies in aromatic-spacer-based 2D DJ perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Abstract:Stability has been a long-standing concern for solution-processed perovskite photovoltaics and their practical applications. However, stable perovskite materials for photovoltaic remain insufficient to date. Here we demonstrate a series of ultrastable Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites (1,4-cyclohexanedimethanammonium)(methylammonium)n-1PbnI3n+1 (n ≥ 1) for photovoltaic applications. The scalable technology by blade-coated solar cells for the designed DJ perovskites (nominal n = 5) achieves a maximum stabilized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.11% under an environmental atmosphere. Un-encapsulated cells by blade-coated technology retain 92% of their initial efficiencies for over 4000 hours under ~90% relative humidity (RH) aging conditions. More importantly, these cells also exhibit remarkable thermal (85 °C) and operational stability, which shows negligible efficiency loss after exceeding 5000-hour heat treatment or after operation at maximum power point (MPP) exceeding 6000 hours at 45 °C under a 100 mW cm-2 continuous light illumination.
Compositional and Solvent Engineering in Dion–Jacobson 2D Perovskites Boosts Solar Cell Efficiency and Stability

Abstract:Hybrid halide 2D perovskites deserve special attention because they exhibit superior environmental stability compared with their 3D analogs. The closer interlayer distance discovered in 2D Dion–Jacobson (DJ) type of halide perovskites relative to 2D Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) perovskites implies better carrier charge transport and superior performance in solar cells. Here, the structure and properties of 2D DJ perovskites employing 3‐(aminomethyl)piperidinium (3AMP2+) as the spacing cation and a mixture of methylammonium (MA+) and formamidinium (FA+) cations in the perovskite cages are presented. Using single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography, it is found that the mixed‐cation (3AMP)(MA0.75FA0.25)3Pb4I13 perovskite has a narrower bandgap, less distorted inorganic framework, and larger PbIPb angles than the single‐cation (3AMP)(MA)3Pb4I13. Furthermore, the (3AMP)(MA0.75FA0.25)3Pb4I13 films made by a solvent‐engineering method with a small amount of hydriodic acid have a much better film morphology and crystalline quality and more preferred perpendicular orientation. As a result, the (3AMP)(MA0.75FA0.25)3Pb4I13‐based solar cells exhibit a champion power conversion efficiency of 12.04% with a high fill factor of 81.04% and a 50% average efficiency improvement compared to the pristine (3AMP)(MA)3Pb4I13 cells. Most importantly, the 2D DJ 3AMP‐based perovskite films and devices show better air and light stability than the 2D RP butylammonium‐based perovskites and their 3D analogs. 2D Dion–Jacobson perovskites have better carrier charge transport because of the closer interlayer distance. Solar cells based on Dion–Jacobson perovskites having mixed organic cations and using solvent‐engineering methods and hydriodic acid additive achieve higher efficiencies with high fill factors. Most importantly, the Dion–Jacobson perovskite solar cells exhibit better environmental stability compared with butylammonium‐based perovskites and 3D analogs.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic perovskite structured compounds have recently emerged as attractive materials in the fields of photovoltaic due to their exciting optical properties and easy syntheses, as well as exceptional structural and optical tunability. This work presents a Dion-Jacobson two-dimensional (2D) perovskite using diammonium as the barrier molecule. We show that the diammonium barrier molecule is responsible for the perovskite layers' orientation supported by Hall Effect measurements, which results in a high efficiency solar cell for 2D perovskite without the need for additives or any additional treatment. The 2D perovskite cells achieved an efficiency of 15.6%, which was one of the highest reported for low-dimensional perovskite. Charge extraction, voltage decay, and charge collection efficiency measurements show the beneficial alignment of the 2D perovskites related to the selective contacts. Stability characterization shows that the stability for the 2D perovskite was enhanced compared with their 3D counterparts.

Abstract:Hybrid two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have emerged as an important class of high-performance semiconductors because of their excellent physical properties and structural diversity. Here, we report a new family of hybrid 2D Ge-based perovskites that have the Dion–Jacobson structure type, with the general formula A(MA) n–1Ge n X3n+1, where A = 2-(aminomethyl)pyridinium (2AMPY), 3-(aminomethyl)pyridinium (3AMPY), 4-(aminomethyl)pyridinium (4AMPY), or 4-(aminomethyl)piperidinium (4AMP), X = Br or I, and n = 1 or 2. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that most of the bromide structures are centrosymmetric, whereas the iodide analogues are all non-centrosymmetric. The optical band gaps are effectively regulated by the level of octahedral distortion of the corresponding [GeX6], where a larger distortion corresponds to a larger band gap. These compounds exhibit relatively weak photoluminescence, which can be observed at low temperatures. All of the Ge-based iodide perovskites exhibit good second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses, with the highest reaching 0.53 × AgGaS2 for (4AMPY)GeI4, where their particle-dependent SHG has been investigated. First-principles calculations of the SHG properties are in good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, layer transformation can be achieved from the (100)- to (110)-oriented configuration by mixing the halides, which is a rare example. These results showcase the versatility and diversity of employing an asymmetric dication and the Ge2+ metal to achieve SHG active non-centrosymmetric materials, providing new strategies for the design of lead-free alternatives with interesting photophysical properties.

Abstract:2D Dion–Jacobson (2D DJ) perovskites are considered as promising photovoltaic materials due to their structural stability and spacer designability. Here, a spacer cation with an aromatic imidazole ring, 2‐(1H‐imidazol‐2‐yl)ethylammonium (HE), is successfully applied to construct 2D DJ perovskite. It's found that the high polarity of the HE spacer strengthens the interaction between organic and inorganic layers and reduces the exciton binding energy to 67.8 meV, resulting in promoted charge dissociation, compared with the aliphatic 1,4‐butanediammonium (BDA) spacer with a similar length. The HE spacer enlarges the micelle size in precursor solution and suppresses the formation of low‐n value phases. In consequence, the HE‐based perovskite film exhibits better quality than the BDA‐based one, with lower defect density and longer carrier lifetime. The optimized device based on (HE)(MA0.75FA0.25)4Pb5I16 film achieves a champion power conversion efficiency up to 18.40%, much higher than that of the BDA‐based device (15.03%). Besides, the unencapsulated device based HE exhibits improved moisture and thermal stability.
