Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been investigated as a promising methodology to harvest mechanical energy into electricity. The matching impedance and the transient property of TENGs are important for their practical application. In this work, we proposed novel paper-based methodology for investigation of TENGs. First, we propose a novel method for triggering transience of pencil-on-paper (POP)-TENGs using household microwave oven and commercial graphite pencil. Moreover, a fast, simple and cost-effective approach for measuring the matching impedance of TENG based on paper variable resistor is proposed. The results of this work are beneficial for simple, fast and cost-effective functionalization of TENGs.

Abstract:Paper-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) represent an affordable, green, and eco-friendly energy harvesting methodology. In this work, we propose a novel X-shaped paper TENG (XP-TENG) formed from a ballpoint ink layer coated by painting with a commercial brush pen. The paper and Teflon tape serve as the triboelectric pairs, with the paper serving as the supporting component. Moreover, the XP-TENG is capable of providing two working patterns that can yield an expanded scope of practical applications. A stacked XP-TENG was proposed for increasing the output performance and harvesting the mechanical energy generated by motion of the human body. This staked XP-TENG can directly light up 101 blue high-power LEDs with working voltage of 3.4 V. The fabricated XP-TENG can be used for harvesting mechanical energy from human walking.
Sliding-mode Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on Paper and As a Self-Powered Velocity and Force Sensor

Abstract:With an objective to harvest ambient mechanical power for self-powered systems, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) based on paper have been currently put forward as an extensively effective, affordable as well as a sturdy methodology for the generation of power from mechanical vibrations, which are based on coupling between triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. Nevertheless, previous paper TENGs are built by vertical disintegration of the triboelectric-charged planes, requiring intricate structures of the device for ensuring that they are sufficiently resilient towards the charge disintegration; or else, no output current is observed. In this work, we firstly proposed a sliding paper TENG (SP-TENG) that was built based on in-plane charge disintegration mechanism, which utilizes related sliding between two interacting facades. Paper and Teflon tape served as the triboelectric pairs, and carbon ink was used as the conductive electrode. The proposed SP-TENG brings forth an open-circuit voltage of approximately 1000 V, a short-circuit current of approximately 42 mu A and a peak power density of approximately 18.4 W/m(2). The output performance can instantaneously drive 200 high-powered light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In comparison with the prevailing vertical-touching based TENGs, the advantages of elevated effectiveness, simple manufacture and appropriateness for different kinds of mechanical triggering are exhibited by SP-TENG. Moreover, a stacked SP-TENG is proposed to improve output performance. The proposed SP-TENG has potential applications as self-powered velocity sensor and force sensor. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Recently, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has aroused considerable interest due to various advantages. Particularly, one benefit which sand out is that the triboelectric pair of TENG is very tolerant to the material composition. Thus, it is possible and significant to develop cost-effective TENG using commercial and inexpensive material. In this work, we present a paper TENG by repeated folding completely using commercially available commodity materials, such as paper, brush pen, Teflon tape, and conductive ink. Paper is used as functionally triboelectric pair and spring-like supporting structure. The stacked paper TENG is fabricated and large enhancement of output performance is observed. The generated electric outputs have been used to directly light-up commercial LEDs. The proposed TENG has demonstrated simplicity and cost-effective, which is suitable for flexible electronics. Abstract:The exploration of the utilization of sustainable, green energy represents one way in which it is possible to ameliorate the growing threat of the global environmental issues and the crisis in energy. Moisture, which is ubiquitous on Earth, contains a vast reservoir of low‐grade energy in the form of gaseous water molecules and water droplets. It has now been found that a number of functionalized materials can generate electricity directly from their interaction with moisture. This suggests that electrical energy can be harvested from atmospheric moisture and enables the creation of a new range of self‐powered devices. Herein, the basic mechanisms of moisture‐induced electricity generation are discussed, the recent advances in materials (including carbon nanoparticles, graphene materials, metal oxide nanomaterials, biofibers, and polymers) for harvesting electrical energy from moisture are summarized, and some strategies for improving energy conversion efficiency and output power in these devices are provided. The potential applications of moisture electrical generators in self‐powered electronics, healthcare, security, information storage, artificial intelligence, and Internet‐of‐things are also discussed. Some remaining challenges are also considered, together with a number of suggestions for potential new developments of this emerging technology.

All-Printed Flexible Hygro-Thermoelectric Paper Generator

Abstract:The conversion of ubiquitous hygrothermal resources into renewable energy offers significant potential for cable-free, self-powered systems that can operate worldwide without regard to climatic or geographic limitations. Here, an all-printed flexible hygro-thermoelectric paper generator is demonstrated that uses bifunctional mobile ions and electrons to make the moist-diffusion effect, the Soret effect, and the Seebeck effect work synergistically. In the ordinary hygrothermal settings, it generates an unconventional hygro-thermoelectric output pattern and shows almost a dozen-fold increase in positive hygro-thermopower of 26.70 mV K-1 and also another negative hygro-thermopower of -15.71 mV K-1 compared to pure thermopower. A single paper generator can produce a giant 680 mV displaying typical cyclic sinusoidal waveform characters with volt-sized amplitudes. The ion-electron conductive ink is easily printable and consists primarily of a Bi2 Te3 /PEDOT:PSS thermoelectric matrix modulated with a hygroscopic glycerol that releases ion charges for moist-diffusion effect and Soret effect, as well as electron charges for Seebeck effect. The emerged hygro-thermoelectric harvesting strategy from surrounding hygrothermal resources offers a revolutionary approach to the next generation of hybrid energy with cost-efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability, and also enables large-scale roll-to-roll production.

Abstract:In this study, a novel approach utilizing paper‐based hydroelectric generators (p‐HEGs) is presented to harness energy from water evaporation and convert it into electricity. The underlying mechanism of p‐HEG power generation relies on the electrokinetic effect, which is induced by the pressure gradient‐induced changes in the electrical double layer (EDL), particularly the streaming potential. The research presented in this paper introduces a novel environmental energy‐harvesting technology that harnesses electricity from the evaporation of water using porous structural materials. Specifically, a strategy employing paper‐based hydroelectric generators (p‐HEGs) is proposed to capture the energy produced during water evaporation and convert it into usable electricity. The p‐HEGs offer several advantages, including simplicity in fabrication, low cost, and reusability. To evaluate their effectiveness, the water evaporation‐induced electrical output performance of four different p‐HEGs are compared. Among the variants tested, the p‐HEG combining wood pulp and polyester fiber exhibits the best output performance. At room temperature, this particular p‐HEG generates a short‐circuit current and open‐circuit voltage of ≈0.4 μA and 0.3 V, respectively, thereby demonstrating excellent electrical stability. Furthermore, the electrical current and voltage generated by the p‐HEG through water evaporation are able to power an LED light, both individually and in series and parallel connections. This study delves into the potential of electricity harvesting from water evaporation and establishes it as a viable method for renewable energy applications.

Abstract:Abstract Generating sustainable electricity from ambient humidity and natural evaporation has attracted tremendous interest recently as it requires no extra mechanical energy input and is deployable across all weather and geography conditions. Here, we present a device prototype for enhanced power generation from ambient humidity. This prototype uses both heterogenous materials assembled from a LiCl-loaded cellulon paper to facilitate moisture adsorption and a carbon-black-loaded cellulon paper to promote water evaporation. Exposing such a centimeter-sized device to ambient humidity can produce voltages of around 0.78 V and a current of around 7.5 μA, both of which can be sustained for more than 10 days. The enhanced electric output and durability are due to the continuous water flow that is directed by evaporation through numerous, negatively charged channels within the cellulon papers. The voltage and current exhibit an excellent scaling behavior upon device integration to sufficiently power commercial devices including even cell phones. The results open a promising prospect of sustainable electricity generation based on a synergy between spontaneous moisture adsorption and water evaporation.

Abstract:Moist‐electric generators are effectively fabricated and efficiently integrated using a scalable 3D printing method, which enables actively harvesting moisture power for high‐performance energy output with various applications of practical importance. Water‐enabled electricity generation technologies that are highly accessible and fundamentally clean are promising for next‐generation green energy. However, the challenge of scalability in both material processing and device fabrication greatly limits their practical applications. A high‐performance polyelectrolyte moist‐electric generator (MEG), which can be directly 3D printed for massive production and efficient integration, is reported. The printed MEG (p‐MEG) generates a high open‐circuit voltage of 0.8 V and a short‐circuit‐current density of 0.12 mA cm−2 by actively harvesting moisture from humid conditions. The synergistic effects of moisture gradient, ionic concentration gradient, and ion diffusion gradient, which remarkably enhance the driving force to separate ion pairs and notably facilitate the directional ion transport, are responsible for the high power generation performance of p‐MEG, as further backed up by in situ ion dynamics investigations and molecular simulations. When connected in serial and parallel, hundreds of p‐MEGs can deliver a high voltage of more than 180 V and a current of more than 1 mA. A constructed "moisture‐powered cup lamp" that lights up for hours further demonstrates the practicability of p‐MEG. This work provides a feasible and scalable 3D printing approach for the next‐generation environment‐adaptive self‐powered system.

Abstract:Moist-electric generation as a green process of power generation can effectively solve energy and environmental problems. In order to improve the moist-electric properties of moist-electric generator (MEG), this study designed and prepared a sodium alginate (SA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) bilayer film hygroscopic generator with an asymmetric distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups (asym-SCM) by simple freeze-drying and pressing. The relative ratios of carbon and oxygen in the system were adjusted by changing the ratios of SA/MWCNT, and the advantages of constructing an asymmetric distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups on the moist-electrical properties of the material were verified. The asym-SCM MEG is able to draw moisture from the environment, generating an open circuit voltage up to ca. 0.65 V at low humidity (ca. 40%) and generating power continuously for up to 650 min. At 90% humidity, the asym-SCM MEG can achieve an output voltage of ca. 0.78 V, well above the power generation performance of most biomass materials moist-electric studies in the current phase. This MEG is green, biocompatible, biodegradable, promising to be used as a self-powered device for flexible wearable, biomedical and other applications.

Abstract:The water utilization is accompanied with the development of human beings. Whereas, the gaseous moisture is usually regarded as underexploited resources. The advances of highly‐efficient hygroscopic materials endow the atmospheric water harvesting an intriguing solution to convert moisture into clean water. The discovery of hygroelectricity, which refers to the charge build‐up at material surface dependent on humidity, and the following moisture enabled electric generation (MEG) realizes the energy conversion and directly output electricity. Much progress has been made since then to optimize the MEG performance, pushing forward the applications of MEG into practical level. Herein, the evolvement and development of MEG are systematically summarized in a chronological order. The optimization strategies of MEG are discussed and comprehensively evaluated. Then, the latest applications of MEG are presented, including high‐performance powering units and self‐powered devices. Abstract:With the rapid development of modern society, our demand for energy is increasing. And the extensive use of fossil energy has triggered a series of problems such as an energy crisis and environmental pollution. A moisture-enabled electric generator (MEG) is a new type of energy conversion method, which can directly convert the ubiquitous moisture in the air into electrical energy equipment. It has attracted great interest for its renewable and environmentally friendly qualities. At present, most MEGs still have low power density, strong dependence on high humidity, and high cost. Herein, we report the development of a high-efficiency MEG based on a lignocellulosic fiber frame with high-power-density, all-weather, and low-cost characteristics using a simple strategy that optimizes the charge transport channel and ion concentration difference. The MEG devices we manufactured can generate the open-circuit voltage of 0.73 V and the short-circuit current of 360 őľA, and the voltage can still reach 0.6 V at less than 30% humidity. It is possible to drive commercial electronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, electronic displays, and electronic calculators by simply connecting several electric generators in series. Biomass-based moisture-enabled electric generation has a low cost, is easy to integrate on a large scale, and is green and pollution-free, providing clean energy for low-humidity or high-electricity-cost areas.

Abstract:Utilizing ubiquitous thermal evaporation for electrical energy harvesting is considered as an effective way to develop future green energy. In this work, we develop a lyophilized-prepared sponge based moist-electric generator with a supramolecular assembly of poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) and graphene oxide (PPGO), which could efficiently harvest electric power from thermal evaporation under extreme thermal fluctuations. More importantly, the open circuit voltage of self-power PPGO generator can reach up to 2.13 V in moist air (RH 73%) under a temperature difference of 110 K without any mechanical energy input, and 0.49 V cm−2 for an apparent area of ∼1.25 cm2 under natural evaporation. In addition, the in situ Raman spectra indicate that the spontaneous symmetry breaking induced by assembly of PEDOT:PSS networks is responsible for the enhanced moist-electric power harvesting performance, which provides a convenient paradigm for converting waste heat and humid environmental energy into electricity.

Abstract:Along with the unceasing growth of worldwide economic and the associated issues on resources, energy and environment, clean energy generating technologies that are based on recyclable materials, if possible, may become the future trend of development. Here, we report the design of a cheap, lightweight, and recyclable single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that utilizes waste paper as the triboelectric material. Under the current strategy, we successfully developed green energy machines without vastly increasing the mining of various critical minerals around the world. The as-designed TENG could not only collect and convert mechanical energy into electricity with sound efficiency, but also has the merit for continuous reuse and quick construction. The maximum output power density is as high as 171 mW·m−2 at a resistance of 130 MΩ and could be integrated into a book for monitoring reading actions, thus providing a new approach to the low-cost, green and sustainable self-powered electronic systems.

Abstract:Disposable wearable electronics are valuable for diagnostic and healthcare purposes, reducing maintenance needs and enabling broad accessibility. However, integrating a reliable power supply is crucial for their advancement, but conventional power sources present significant challenges. To address that issue, a novel paper-based moist-electric generator is developed that harnesses ambient moisture for power generation. The device features gradients for functional groups and moisture adsorption and architecture of nanostructures within a disposable paper substrate. The nanoporous, gradient-formed spore-based biofilm and asymmetric electrode deposition enable sustained high-efficiency power output. A Janus hydrophobic-hydrophilic paper layer enhances moisture harvesting, ensuring effective operation even in low-humidity environments. This research reveals that the water adsorption gradient is crucial for performance under high humidity, whereas the functional group gradient is dominant under low humidity. The device delivers consistent performance across diverse conditions and flexibly conforms to various surfaces, making it ideal for wearable applications. Its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and disposable nature makes it a viable solution for widespread use with minimal environmental effects. This innovative approach overcomes the limitations of traditional power sources for wearable electronics, offering a sustainable solution for future disposable wearables. It significantly enhances personalized medicine through improved health monitoring and diagnostics.
A flexible electrokinetic power generator derived from paper and ink for wearable electronics

Abstract:Low-grade energy harvesting from the ambient environment promises to relieve the energy shortage in the remote regions or emergency needs. The reported materials employed for low-grade energy harvesting requires costly raw materials and highly technical skills, hindering the applications in isolated regions or after natural disasters. Herein, we report the use of commercial air-laid paper and carbon ink to harvest electrokinetic energy in the capillary flow. The paper-based electrokinetic power generator with size of 6 cm × 1 cm could continuously generate an output voltage of 0.35 V and current of 33.9 μA in the ambient condition (20 °C and 50% Relative Humidity). The output power could maintain for over 120 h. When connected in series and in parallel, the power generator with excellent flexibility could power some common electronic devices in the atmosphere, such as light-emitting diode, electronic calculator and watch. This work offers a rational approach to employing low-cost materials for ambient energy harvesting, thus advancing the application in portable and wearable electronic devices.

Portable Self-Charging Power System via Integration of a Flexible Paper-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator and Supercapacitor

Abstract:To meet the energy demand for flexible and miniaturized green electronics, it is highly desirable to develop a portable, cost-effective, lightweight, and sustainable power source through a facile and environment friendly approach. Herein, we report a portable, flexible, and low-cost self-charging power system (SCPS) consisting of a paper-based triboelectric nanogenerator (P-TENG) with high output power density as the energy harvester and a paper-based supercapacitor (P-SC) with a great areal capacitance as the energy storage device. A cellulose paper/polypyrrole composite with a low sheet resistance of 7.8 Ω sq–1 replaced the conventional metal electrodes and positive friction material in the P-TENG, as well as the capacitive material in the P-SC. The portable SCPS is capable of driving various miniaturized electronics such as a temperature/humidity indicator, thus demonstrating its potential as a sustainable power source for flexible and miniaturized green electronics.
