Abstract:The ability to release, as electrical energy, potential energy stored at the water:carbon interface is attractive, since water is abundant and available. However, many previous reports of such energy converters rely on either flowing water or specially designed ionic aqueous solutions. These requirements restrict practical application, particularly in environments with quiescent water. Here, a carbon‐based chemical‐to‐electricity device that transfers the chemical energy to electrical form when coming into contact with quiescent deionized water is reported. The device is built using carbon nanotube yarns, oxygen content of which is modulated using oxygen plasma‐treatment. When immersed in water, the device discharges electricity with a power density that exceeds 700 mW m−2, one order of magnitude higher than the best previously published result. X‐ray absorption and density functional theory studies support a mechanism of operation that relies on the polarization of sp2 hybridized carbon atoms. The devices are incorporated into a flexible fabric for powering personal electronic devices.
Self-sustained electricity generator driven by the compatible integration of ambient moisture adsorption and evaporation

Abstract:Abstract Generating sustainable electricity from ambient humidity and natural evaporation has attracted tremendous interest recently as it requires no extra mechanical energy input and is deployable across all weather and geography conditions. Here, we present a device prototype for enhanced power generation from ambient humidity. This prototype uses both heterogenous materials assembled from a LiCl-loaded cellulon paper to facilitate moisture adsorption and a carbon-black-loaded cellulon paper to promote water evaporation. Exposing such a centimeter-sized device to ambient humidity can produce voltages of around 0.78 V and a current of around 7.5 μA, both of which can be sustained for more than 10 days. The enhanced electric output and durability are due to the continuous water flow that is directed by evaporation through numerous, negatively charged channels within the cellulon papers. The voltage and current exhibit an excellent scaling behavior upon device integration to sufficiently power commercial devices including even cell phones. The results open a promising prospect of sustainable electricity generation based on a synergy between spontaneous moisture adsorption and water evaporation.

All-Printed Flexible Hygro-Thermoelectric Paper Generator

Abstract:The conversion of ubiquitous hygrothermal resources into renewable energy offers significant potential for cable-free, self-powered systems that can operate worldwide without regard to climatic or geographic limitations. Here, an all-printed flexible hygro-thermoelectric paper generator is demonstrated that uses bifunctional mobile ions and electrons to make the moist-diffusion effect, the Soret effect, and the Seebeck effect work synergistically. In the ordinary hygrothermal settings, it generates an unconventional hygro-thermoelectric output pattern and shows almost a dozen-fold increase in positive hygro-thermopower of 26.70 mV K-1 and also another negative hygro-thermopower of -15.71 mV K-1 compared to pure thermopower. A single paper generator can produce a giant 680 mV displaying typical cyclic sinusoidal waveform characters with volt-sized amplitudes. The ion-electron conductive ink is easily printable and consists primarily of a Bi2 Te3 /PEDOT:PSS thermoelectric matrix modulated with a hygroscopic glycerol that releases ion charges for moist-diffusion effect and Soret effect, as well as electron charges for Seebeck effect. The emerged hygro-thermoelectric harvesting strategy from surrounding hygrothermal resources offers a revolutionary approach to the next generation of hybrid energy with cost-efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability, and also enables large-scale roll-to-roll production.

Carbon nanotube/MnO2 decorated air-laid paper electrodes, with outstanding flexibility and good electrochemical performances, are prepared. They are then assembled into solid-state supercapacitors. By making through-holes on the supercapacitors, breathable and flexible supercapacitors are successfully fabricated.

Abstract:We report carbon nanotube thin film-based supercapacitors fabricated with printing methods, where electrodes and separators are integrated into single sheets of commercial paper. Carbon nanotube films are easily printed with Meyer rod coating or ink-jet printing onto a paper substrate due to the excellent ink absorption of paper. A specific capacity of 33 F/g at a high specific power of 250 000 W/kg is achieved with an organic electrolyte. Such a lightweight paper-based supercapacitor could be used to power paper electronics such as transistors or displays.

Abstract:Electricity generation from the interaction between water and carbon materials is a new approach in the pursuit of high-efficiency energy conversion. Here, we report that a water droplet dropping onto a piece of porous carbon film can spontaneously generate electricity under ambient conditions. Twelve 5-μL water droplets can generate a voltage up to 5.2 V and illuminate a liquid crystal display. The voltage can be controlled by modulating the direction of the droplet infiltration, the zeta potential of the porous carbon, and the ion concentration. The results demonstrate that a hydrophilic porous carbon film with water droplets may function as a cost-effective electricity generator for harvesting energy from natural resources.

Abstract:Significance Future wearable and printable electronics call for scalable production of power sources that can provide green electric energy. The chemical potential energy of the ion gradient is ubiquitous in nature and is the foundation of many living species. Herein, inspired by electric eels, a new power source printed from graphene inks can convert the chemical potential energy of the ion gradient to electric output in the presence of moisture. An ultrahigh voltage of 192 V is achieved on a strip of paper substrate. Two- and three-dimensional cell structures are designed by adapting the mathematical fractal curves and a origami-folding strategy. The industrial-scale production of graphene materials coupled with the reproducibility of printing technology could open new scenarios of cost-effective graphene electronic devices.

Abstract:Water is the source of life and the largest energy carrier on Earth. Various excellent hydrovoltaic technologies have been proposed, but still suffer from issues such as intermittent output, material limitations, and poor flexibility. Here, we proposed a method for fabrication of a hydrovoltaic generator using the flexible polyimide fabric. Carbon black was deposited on the polyimide fabric surface using a simple method of candle flame burning. On the basis of water transport in the fabric and charge separation induced by negatively charged carbon black channels, sustainable hydrovoltaic power generation was achieved by the generator. A single carbon deposited polyimide fabric (CBP) could generate a continuous voltage output of nearly 260 mV by dripping a water drop on one side. Multiple CBP devices were connected in series and parallel to increase output power, which could be applied for the power and energy storage of small electronic devices. This work may provide a convenient strategy for fabricating sustainable flexible hydrovoltaic generators and offer insights for the development of clean power sources.

Abstract:Paper-based flexible electronics/circuit have a bright potential in displays, transistor and sensors due to low cost and disposability. Here we presented a facile microfabrication method for paper-based flexible electronics with flash foam stamp lithography (FFSL), which can be implemented in resource-limited laboratory. Only two steps are needed. Firstly, negative patterns of circuit are stamped on the paper with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) ink to form hydrophobic barriers after PDMS is solidified. Then the patterned paper is immersed in the conductive ink to absorb ink and acquire circuits. In this paper we present foldable, waterproof and multi-layer paper-based flexible electronics can be easily fabricated. Also as FFSL can be also directly used in fabrication of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), this method has a promising potential in fabricating electrodes of μPADs.

Abstract:Solar-driven water vaporization is considered one of the most sustainable technologies to solve water scarcity. However, the advanced design solar absorber system is still required for highly efficient steam generation. Here we develop a novel system for water evaporation through assembly of carbon dots within microchannels of processed wood. Not only is a dual-layer structure including of heat barrier and water transport channel formed, but also the modulation of carbon dot energy structures in favor of photothermal conversion is realized synchronously. This system exhibits higher water evaporation rate and energy efficiency for solar to steam generation than other black photothermal sheets (e.g. carbon nanotube, graphene, graphene oxide). On the one hand, the constructed size-dependent vaporization enthalpy theory shows that the micropores are beneficial to reduce vaporization enthalpy of water. On the other hand, the presented direct evidences for the roles of oxidation functional groups in solar thermal evaporation demonstrate that hydroxyl groups can improve solar-to-heat efficiency. Therefore, tailoring pore sizes and surface functional groups could be an efficient method for solar-to-vapor systems.

Abstract:Hydroelectricity is an emerging novel electricity generation phenomenon that the hydrogen bond energy is converted into chemical potential energy as electric power source by absorbing moisture. Here we report a high-performance water vapour energy harvester based on flexible MoS2 nanosheets with a phase gradient from 1T to 2H. The phase-engineered MoS2 film could provide open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current output of 19 mV and 6.24 µA with a low internal resistance of 3 kΩ. Additionally, the underlying mechanism of electricity generation from phase-engineered MoS2 films was proposed in terms of contrast experiments and the plane wave density functional theory (DFT). Because of the advantages like flexible, safe, light weight and ease of scale production, this novel hydrovoltaic device could be designed as self-powered human-breathing monitor that can be integrated in disposable masks. The output voltage can be further enhanced to power commercial electronic devices by the serial connections of phase-engineered MoS2 sponges.

Abstract:Moist‐electric generators are effectively fabricated and efficiently integrated using a scalable 3D printing method, which enables actively harvesting moisture power for high‐performance energy output with various applications of practical importance. Water‐enabled electricity generation technologies that are highly accessible and fundamentally clean are promising for next‐generation green energy. However, the challenge of scalability in both material processing and device fabrication greatly limits their practical applications. A high‐performance polyelectrolyte moist‐electric generator (MEG), which can be directly 3D printed for massive production and efficient integration, is reported. The printed MEG (p‐MEG) generates a high open‐circuit voltage of 0.8 V and a short‐circuit‐current density of 0.12 mA cm−2 by actively harvesting moisture from humid conditions. The synergistic effects of moisture gradient, ionic concentration gradient, and ion diffusion gradient, which remarkably enhance the driving force to separate ion pairs and notably facilitate the directional ion transport, are responsible for the high power generation performance of p‐MEG, as further backed up by in situ ion dynamics investigations and molecular simulations. When connected in serial and parallel, hundreds of p‐MEGs can deliver a high voltage of more than 180 V and a current of more than 1 mA. A constructed "moisture‐powered cup lamp" that lights up for hours further demonstrates the practicability of p‐MEG. This work provides a feasible and scalable 3D printing approach for the next‐generation environment‐adaptive self‐powered system.

Abstract:Collecting energy from the ubiquitous water cycle has emerged as a promising technology for power generation. Here, we have developed a sustainable moisture absorption-evaporation cycling fabric (Mac-fabric). On the basis of the cycling unidirectional moisture conduction in the fabric and charge separation induced by the negative charge channel, sustainable constant voltage power generation can be achieved. A single Mac-fabric can achieve a high power output of 0.144 W/m 2 (5.76 × 10 2 W/m 3 ) at 40% relative humidity (RH) and 20°C. By assembling 500 series and 300 parallel units of Mac-fabrics, a large-scale demo achieves 350 V of series voltage and 33.76 mA of parallel current at 25% RH and 20°C. Thousands of Mac-fabric units are sewn into a tent to directly power commercial electronic products such as mobile phones in outdoor environments. The lightweight (300 g/m 2 ) and soft characteristics of the Mac-fabric make it ideal for large-area integration and energy collection in real circumstances.

Abstract:We report a laser-ablation aided, direct-write fabrication technique that could convert non-conductive paper rinsed with metal ions and polymer solution into conductive metal carbide and graphene with a typical sheet resistance of 45.3 Ω/□. As fabricated paper electronics inherit the microfiber network from paper and have nanoscale pores and 2D metal carbide flakes due to the laser ablation process. This conducive porous structure could be potentially utilized for sensor and capacitor applications, which usually need large specific area. As preliminary demonstrations, we show a wireless moisture sensor and a supercapacitor fabricated with this foldable paper based electronics. Experimentally, the moisture changes are successfully detected in ambient environment by a paper-based moisture sensor and the paper-based supercapacitor has a measured capacitance of 1.2 mF/cm2. As such, this laser converted paper electronics could be useful for multiple applications such as sensors and energy storage devices.
A flexible electrokinetic power generator derived from paper and ink for wearable electronics

Abstract:Low-grade energy harvesting from the ambient environment promises to relieve the energy shortage in the remote regions or emergency needs. The reported materials employed for low-grade energy harvesting requires costly raw materials and highly technical skills, hindering the applications in isolated regions or after natural disasters. Herein, we report the use of commercial air-laid paper and carbon ink to harvest electrokinetic energy in the capillary flow. The paper-based electrokinetic power generator with size of 6 cm × 1 cm could continuously generate an output voltage of 0.35 V and current of 33.9 μA in the ambient condition (20 °C and 50% Relative Humidity). The output power could maintain for over 120 h. When connected in series and in parallel, the power generator with excellent flexibility could power some common electronic devices in the atmosphere, such as light-emitting diode, electronic calculator and watch. This work offers a rational approach to employing low-cost materials for ambient energy harvesting, thus advancing the application in portable and wearable electronic devices.

Fabrication of Moisture-Responsive Crystalline Smart Materials for Water Harvesting and Electricity Transduction

Abstract:It is of profound significance with regard to the global energy crisis to develop new techniques and materials that can convert the chemical potential of water into other forms of energy, especially electricity. To address this challenge, we built a new type of energy transduction pathway (humidity gradients → mechanical work → electrical power) using moisture-responsive crystalline materials as the media for energy transduction. Single-crystal data revealed that a flexible zeolitic pyrimidine framework material, ZPF-2-Co, could undergo a reversible structural transformation (β to α phase) with a large unit cell change upon moisture stimulus. Dynamic water vapor sorption analysis showed a gate-opening effect with a steep uptake at as low as 10% relative humidity (RH). The scalable green synthesis approach and the fast water vapor adsorption–desorption kinetics made ZPF-2-Co an excellent sorbent to harvest water from arid air, as verified by real water-harvesting experiments. Furthermore, we created a gradient distribution strategy to fabricate polymer-hybridized mechanical actuators based on ZPF-2-Co that could perform reversible bending deformation upon a variation of the humidity gradient. This mechanical actuator showed remarkable durability and reusability. Finally, coupling the moisture-responsive actuator with a piezoelectric transducer further converted the mechanical work into electrical power. Abstract:The electric generation performance of traditional polyelectrolyte membrane with moisture usually fall far behind expectations due to its limited hydrophilic groups and poor directional transport capacity of protons. To this end, we introduce the suspension of carbon dots (CDs) prepared by selective oxidation etching of coal pitch with the mixture of formic acid and H2O2 under ambient temperature into the aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(4-styrensulfonic acid) (PSS) to fabricate a novel hybrid membrane. This membrane (1.00 cm2) continuously delivers a voltage output of 0.83 V with a short-circuit current of 5.20 μA under proper moist conditions over a prolonged period, outperforming the power generation performance of the pristine membrane and many current moisture-enabled electric generation (MEG) devices. Moreover, CDs endow the polymer membrane with more superior mechanical properties, in favor of processing and scale integration for higher power output. With excess hydrophilic groups provided by as-prepared CDs’ suspension, the denser hydrogen-bond network can be formed in the membrane and facilitates water adsorption and the formation of a higher proton concentration gradient. CDs-induced bridging interactions between PSS chains pave a fast directional transport pathway for moveable protons, resulting in a remarkable power output. Accordingly, this work offers a facile and economic method for remoulding traditional polyelectrolyte membrane to conduct highly efficient MEG for practical applications.

Abstract:The exploration of the utilization of sustainable, green energy represents one way in which it is possible to ameliorate the growing threat of the global environmental issues and the crisis in energy. Moisture, which is ubiquitous on Earth, contains a vast reservoir of low‐grade energy in the form of gaseous water molecules and water droplets. It has now been found that a number of functionalized materials can generate electricity directly from their interaction with moisture. This suggests that electrical energy can be harvested from atmospheric moisture and enables the creation of a new range of self‐powered devices. Herein, the basic mechanisms of moisture‐induced electricity generation are discussed, the recent advances in materials (including carbon nanoparticles, graphene materials, metal oxide nanomaterials, biofibers, and polymers) for harvesting electrical energy from moisture are summarized, and some strategies for improving energy conversion efficiency and output power in these devices are provided. The potential applications of moisture electrical generators in self‐powered electronics, healthcare, security, information storage, artificial intelligence, and Internet‐of‐things are also discussed. Some remaining challenges are also considered, together with a number of suggestions for potential new developments of this emerging technology.
